Japan and Linux

March 6th, 2014

We're pleased to announce two big things! First, Ballpoint Universe will be available in Japanese starting today. Thanks to Unity Games Japan, we have a fully localized Japanese version! We'll be premiering the game at BitSummit this evening. EXCITE

Another big dealio--

For our small but dedicated task force, the Linux version is now available! We tried to get everything working the same as the Windows version, however gamepad controls aren't available on Linux.

Anyways, thanks everyone! We're having a week-long sale in celebration of these two events. Enjoy~~

Linux version unofficially out.

February 19th, 2014

Testing some things with the Steam interface, so the game is technically downloable for linux, but has no guarantees of working as of yet. We will post a large post sometime later to announce it out officially.
Thanks for your patience.

Ballpoint Universe is a beautiful shmup with guns and melee weapons. Between the stages you'll explore the cities like a platform game: running, jumping and talking with characters that tells you the story. The difficult is just right, but if you want a real challenge, try to clear levels flawlessly. There's also an infinite mode to keep you occupied. For this game, you'll get more than your money's worth. On sale it's an absolutely steal!

Cool concept brought low by ♥♥♥♥ controls, ♥♥♥♥ checkoint save system, and nauseatingly bad platform physics. Cool and fun, until it's not.

To elaborate:
1.
Mouse is awesome for the shmup part. Sucks for the platforming part.
Keyboard sucks for both.
Gamepad, which i have not tried, is hopefully decent for platforming, but can't possibly be better than mouse for shmup.

2.
Checkpoints suck for everything.

3.
As for the physics, there's too much inertia and bouncing and sliding off stuff you are trying to land on is the rule, not the exception. Either bounding box issues or, again, the wack controls (and/or just something about the jump trajectory envelope) make it seem cheap and low-tech, like a phone game, or a flash game, as you are constantly denied on fundamental jumps.

Cool and fun, until it's not. I want to like this game but I quickly lost patience with the repetition brought on by the playability issues mentioned above. The game wants you to explore it, but you won't want to. And you can't just go "100% shmup", AFAICT.

I'm still recommending it cuz it's at least worth a check-out, but ..... well, all I can say is, maybe I should have bought "Ballpoint Universe - Just the First 4-5 Levels, Until It Starts Getting Dickish", instead of "Ballpoint Universe - Infinite". YMMV, I suppose.

Bardzo ciekawa platformówka z elementami zręcznościowej strzelanki.
Wędrujemy po krainie narysowanej w uroczy uczniowski sposób. Po drodze zbieramy tzw. "złote szkice" i rozmawiamy z napotkanymi istotami.

Very interesting platformer with arcade shooter elements.
We wander through the land drawn in a charming way. Along the way we collect so-called "golden sketches" and talk with met creatures. During certain conversations we obtain tasks to defeat waves of enemies in arcade shooter style. Those missions are about flying from left to right eliminating encountered enemies and gathering "inks". Thanks to those "inks" we gain possibility of improving our ship.
After completing the game we can play again keeping all gained things.
I very recommend this game.

This game was quite the surprise, I didn't pay much attention to the trailer, under the expectation I wouldn't even play it (having gotten it from a bundle), but for no firm reason I decided to try it. What at a glance I had thought to be an artistic platformer (as so many indie games these days are), turned out to be an artistic platformer/upgradable shooter. Although I was a little put-off from getting the wrong idea of the game, I continued to play and started to really enjoy it! Ballpoint Universe allows the player to use keyboard, mouse, or a gamepad at their will, allowing a wide variety of choices. The game has a surprisingly interesting story, and provides much inspiration with it's monochromatic artwork and interesting design.
Ballpoint Universe is a must-have for casual and artistic gamers alike, for it provides a fun and inspirational casual game for all to enjoy.

Ballpoint Universe - Infinite is a beautiful game, one that steers clear from the mediocrity that most indie games have become.

This game deserves an A+ in all aspects: its graphics is something new, fresh, artsy, that is a pleasure just to look at. The music is another highpoint in the game, and matches each one of the mini-games perfectly.

Playing it is an enjoyable and fun experience, be it for a quickie or for several hours.

Playability itself is great: the game is composed of several mini-games that can be played an infinite number of times, and your progress is never lost between plays. All mini-games are side-scrollers. Acquring new weapons and upgrades for your ship isn't so complicated.

I highly recommend this game and I salute the developers for coming up with such a fresh idea.

Jeez, for $3 what is there to complain about here? Nothing. Nice little game. It's like an old arcade side scroller which is a bit of a walk down memory lane, playing things like 'R-Type' back in the day. Graphics are interesting. Music does the job. Nice to see they went straight for mouse control not the x-box controller. Buy it and give the developers a couple of bucks to encourage them on their future path of game design.
