I decided to sell my soul to the devil if he taugth me the game.

The devil appeared, sat down at my computer, and tried to learn the game.

The devil lost all his patience, and decided there where easier things to do, like learning quantum physics.

The devil attempted to leave, I told him he still had to teach me.

The devil gives me his soul and disappears.

666/10, would confund the devil again.

Hearts of Iron III, in general, more of a wargame than a grand strategy game, and it is EXTREMELY HARD to get into, even for a grand strategy game, for a few main reasons:
1. The Order of Battle (OOB) system. It is very intimidating, and it's not unusual for you to spend half an hour or more organizing your army.
2. Poor UI. The UI for Hearts of Iron III is quite far from perfect, an example being there being a ton of mapmodes, with few even being useful, and a lack of shortcuts.
3. Relatively railroaded gameplay. Bringing up my wargame point from earlier, Hearts of Iron III has few sandbox elements outside of your country, and becomes extremely predictable very quickly, following the order on how the war begins, and the same people joining the same teams every time without player influence.
4. Terrible tutorial. The in-game "tutorial" is basically ignorable and a complete waste of time that teaches you very little about the game; you're better off just watching a few YouTube videos as a new player.

With it being an old game, there's also quite a few bugs. You will probably experience crashes, freezes, and other game-breaking bugs. On top of this, the AI is also very poor; once you develop basics for the game, you can basically just beat all of the AI.

Because of all of this, I do not recommend this game, since it's just too hard to get into, and requires you to devote long amounts of time into learning the game. However, if devoting a lot of time and doing military roleplay is more of your thing, then you might enjoy this game, provided you don't experience too many crashes.

Over complicated. Hard to find information. Orders and changes to your country are so slow to kick in you cannot tell if decisions are helping much and in what way. I love war games and tactics but this game is to bulky and over complicated. I watched hours of videos and read instructions. Would rather play civ or g-civ. Plus the graphic representations actually take away from the game and the information to play it, to bad I found this out after spending another 20 dollars. What a rip! I restart at least 6 times and played for more like 30hours.

*I've never played a Hearts of Iron before this*

When you put the time in this game, you will have a great experience. It has however some really annoying drawbacks.
Since HOI4 is just around the corner, you should get HOI3 on sale.

7/10

+ Amazing campaigns.
+ really long campaigns.
+ Settings for days (command structure, etc.)
+ Finally beating a major country is incredibly rewarding.
+ Great map.
+ So incredibly fun just to play this for hours.

- Hard to get into when you never played a hoi before.
- Sea invasions are a bit broken.
- Command structures are overwhelming.
- Surrounding the enemy is pretty much useless unless you outnumber them 1000000 to 1.
- When playing as the Soviet Union, the Allies don't do jack ♥♥♥♥.
- When playing as the Allies, the Soviet Union advances unrealistic fast rate. What makes intervention pretty much useless since they will crush the Axis all by them self without any ressistance.
- Operations just arent fun to make since you have to micromanage every attack.

Paradox is ♥♥♥♥. Pirate their games, and just msg someone(an idiot who bought their games) with access to their forums-- if you want a mod or summin.
They are the only ones who make G.S.G.s so they add a bunch of ♥♥♥♥ D.L.C. for you to buy, and it's all ♥♥♥♥ repeated; sprite packs, music packs, vehicle packs(in case of H.O.I.3), and a bunch of other rubbish that should be there in the first place. These ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s have a large consumerbase who excuse their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ business practices, so don't expect much from them.
BTW: I am in no way supporting pirating, don't do it; I was just saying that with no real intent. ;^) do it

Brutally difficult game, hard to learn, but once you get it, it's smooth sailing. Does have quite a few crashes every now and then. I highly recommend it to anyone interesting in WW2 who are looking for an in depth game. 8/10. You do need the major DLC to make it more playable. (For the motherland, Semper Fi, Their finest Hour)

Unsupported:
The game is old and crashes regularly after being in the background. The Wiki is hopelessly incomplete and obsolete. The diplomatic, trade and espionage functions are just wacky. And like all Paradox historical games, the rules are both gamey and fussy: they create amazing historical detail, and offer you the chance to rewrite history, but then they slam down artificial barriers to prevent you from rewriting it very much.

Ok. The game starts to get boring after about 150 hours but the mods start bringing more depth into the game and I could play this game forever. Super exited for Hearts of iron 4!

> Started HoI3 for the first time with Semper Fi & For the Motherland DLCs installed

> Played as Germany in 1938, right before taking the Sudetenland

> Built up my military to practically unstoppable

> Took the Sudetenland with the Treaty of Munich

> Wasn't happy with it

> Declared war on Czechoslovakia

> Crushed them in a matter of days

> Conquered them

> 1939, I ask Poland for Danzig

> Poland says no

> UK starts guaranteeing their independance

> Selected "Danzig or War" National Decision

> Poland chooses war

> I conquer Poland in exactly a week

> Soviet Union asks for eastern Poland

> hellno.jpg

> Soviet Union takes Estonia, Lativa, and Lithuania

> I take over France and choose to completely conquer those Frenchies

> I declare war on Belgium, Luxembourg, and Denmark, conquered all three

> I declare war on the Soviet Union, hoping to get their European lands

> Most of my army's taking over the Soviet Union

> UK finally shows it's face

> UK makes landings along the Belgian shores

> They liberate Belgium

> Belgium and the UK try to liberate France

> They liberate France

> I immediatly re-enforce conquer on those Frenchies

> They keep trying to liberate France fruitlessly

> UK makes landings in Italy, they manage to completely take them over

> oshit.jpg

> Netherlands joins the Allies

> The Netherlands and the UK make their way to Berlin

> I finally manage to take over the European portion of the USSR

> Japs decide to ♥♥♥♥ off the US

> US makes landings along the Pomeranian coast and destroy my army heading to defend Berlin

> All of them manage to take Berlin

> I'm forced to surrender

10/10, would lose WWII in a historically inaccurate way again

Certainly one of the best strategy - war history games I have ever played in my life (Just look at the bloody hour counter!! and those are online). Very deep mechanics and too many stuff to learn, not easy but certainly not impossible. Taking away the mods, is limited when it comes to play in a sandbox way; although you have certain degree of freedom, some things just won't happen, that is in historic terms. As for technology and military focus you really are the ruler of your country: whether as Germany you start focusing on building a decent Kriegsmarine or as Japan on building tanks to send them to support you Italian ally in Africa.

I think the game can suit your gamestyle depending on how much micromanagement you want to do or simply if you just want to FF the game only watching how your armies advance. Personally, I try to balance between both: invading the Soviets with Germany I prefer to go fight by fight meanwhile for crushing China with the Japs I just let it go faster or also checking from time to time how is the US fleet managing to stop the Japanese advance.

Certainly a game that needs tons of time and pacience (that also still depends on your gameplay). The only major setback is the bloody problem that crashes it almost every 20 minutes almost every time, and although it is said that there is a fix on the dev's page, is not precisely the word straightfoward on how to fix it.

Overall 8/10 because of that damn issue.

P.S. I hope it dissapears completey with Hoi4

Well this game....
It altered so much stuff from HOI2 engine that makes me play both this and Darkest hours still a lot.
It is hard to decide which is better.

Paradox made HOI3 not just different also on the gameplay part, but the new autonomous historical ai can make the game a little more ahistorical than the earlier games. Not saying it's bad, just different and some people may not like it.
The Combat system got a lot complicated, Technologies too. But theres a catch...
If you don't like any of these new features or are just starting out you can put individual parts of country into AI hands, which helps a ton if you are just learning the game.

I consider the HOI series one of the hardests off the Parados titles so this game made it a lil bit easier to start I think, especially with the AI features. But I really suggest you play Darkest Hour too after seeing this game. It is a really well made HOI2 enhanced edition.

Overall Score: 7/10
