A beautiful, fantastic puzzle platformer that also happens to be educational, Type:Rider teaches you about typography through the ages. The design is impeccable: each era has a distinct visual and auditory style that is wrapped in a remarkably soothing package. The generally easy game does have the occasional difficulty spike and there are some rare typos/translation errors in the historic entries (nothing rendering them incomprehensible/unpleasant - at least in the English version) but it is definitely a journey worth taking. Don't let it's relatively short game time put you off, your time will definitely be well spent with this game!

This is a real eye-opener game. Unique design concept deep heart and it made a very good detail. Plot is entirely inferior to Hollywood blockbusters. Role model is very fine, making good interface. So what? You worth trying to play!

Learn about fonts. This game is awesome as hell. You get to learn while you collect the letters of the alphabet. If I had the chance to replay the game...I might or might not. Not sure yet.

Once again, a great concept that's ruined by its mechanics.

The game looks good and sounds good, and you can even learn a thing or two about the history of typography. Fantastic! The downside to this is inert controls that ruin most of the fun. You steer a colon (the punctuation mark) around the levels, but it reacts incredibly sluggish to your inputs – it feels like it is constantly wading through sticky goo, but even in the air it reacts slowly. (To clarify, i don't mean that the controls are unresponsive per se, it's rather the slow-moving and slowly-reacting behaviour of your character.) And then there are the "usual" issues many indie games suffer from these days: No way to skip past the opening titles and no options menu (you can't even change the display resolution, and the in-game language is set to whatever region your OS is set to).

As much as i want to recommend this game, these issues weigh it down too much.

(Note: The game is currently available for as low as 1$ as part of a Humble Bundle. For this price i do say, check it out!)

At first, I thought I've found another game as good as 140 or Thomas Was Alone. It was until the second set of levels... Now first of all, the graphics are very good execpt for the Futura levels in my opinion. The music is really enjoyable too and the ambience is there. There's quite a few pages about typography history. But as with any games, the gameplay is the most important part and it's where this game has many issues...

First of all, the controls. Your character is a colon. Sure, it allows for some tactics with lines and such, but it also makes it hard to control. Also the gravity and acceleration are so wacky... It just doesn't feel right.

Then you get into bugs, a game breaking bug where a letter (letter are obstacles and platforms in this game) is facing the wrong way, making the level impossible to finish. In case it happens, you have to restart the level all over again and hope it's fixed. Sometimes the music/sounds go away and sometimes when you pause or alt-tab, the controls doesn't work anymore and you have to Alt+F4 out of the game. Also i've had an issue where my character got stuck in the middle of a letter and I had to restart the game...

Some more issues: the maximum resolution is 1600x900, there's no 1080p, there's a few frame drops throughout the game and the last achievement is really frustating. Also you need to modify your computer settings to change the language of the game (It's in your natal language or pc language by default).

I didin't enjoy playing through this game very much because of all the CONs i've listed. There are way more fluid and responsive platformers out there that you should play first, if you're out of platformers, you could always pick this game up, but with it's controls it's quite frustating to play.

Great educational game about history of typography.

I'm almost sure that first of all developers had idea to make a game about comic sans, though :D

Another beautiful game, the graphic and the music ... it is very challenging to solve as it is not easy to move around inside the game. It requires patient and stay intact being calm to conduct this game. I just enjoy being inside the game ... the whole thing is mesmirizing, going back through times to read the history of the typhography ....

It’s a game about the obscure subject of typefaces..... and I enjoyed it! I’m as shocked as you would be, but Type:Rider is actually a competent physics-based platformer game that’s legitimately fun, and you don’t actually have to read the “educational” stuff if you don’t want to.

This game is similar to “NightSky,” which is also available on Steam (and is in no way educational). but for some reason I liked this better, even though I had no interest in the history of fonts. (But then again, who does???) It turns out that learning about fonts was actually one of the best parts of the game! The compulsion to collect more chapters of the “history book” and learn more about fonts made this game strangely interesting. You can skip the reading part if you want to, I suppose, and just enjoy the platforming, but I found the info intriguing.

As for the game itself, it’s a physics platformer that ingeniously uses fonts (of the historical period) as platforms and obstacles, with many interesting puzzles, treacherous jumps, and fast action.

Make no mistake, this isn’t a triple-A game, but it is fun, and I played it to completion. If you see this game during a “Steam sale” I would recommend considering it.

Are you looking for a fun and still challenging edu-tainment game? This is it.

Learn about typography (e.g. fonts) from the dawn of history to the present in a jumping and rolling ride as a pair of dots otherwise known as an umlaut.

The music is exquisite and the level backdrops and design are enjoyable and evocative of the era explored.

There is however a downside...despite being an artsy game that tries hard to spread the word about typography and teach you its history there are numerous textual errors. These errors, usually in the form of missing words or badly formatted text are scattered throughout all of the articles about typography's history that you unlock whilst playing the game. Whoever did the english localisation for this game needs to be given the benefit of a proofreader. It is quite ironic that this is the main flaw with the game.

Other than that its absolute mint.

I really really want to play this game (on Linux).

Unfortunately, I'm having massive issues with graphics settings and input. The game starts with only the left half of the screen visible on one of my two monitors. Upon correcting this (by chosing a fullscreen (no windowed mode), non-native (not my desktop resolution), not even the correct screen ratio, resolution), the keyboard loses all focus and the game is unplayable.

I have not left the first screen of the game.

Super disappointing. :(

(I'm going to change this review the second i find a fix or it's patched to a playable state)

Type:Rider is a platformer about typography.

The player controls a (grammatical) colon, which bears a remarkable similarity to steering two sentient blobs of gelatin tethered by an invisible rope. This unique physical property gives the gameplay a silly, intentionally slightly awkward feel.

The platforming itself isn't incredibly challenging (except for the @%&^$#$% bonus level!), but each area, themed after a particular typeface, is unique, absorbing, and beautiful. Type:Rider is definitely a few hours and dollars well spent.

What's wrong with the physics of this game? It's taking me forever to get the last achievement! I'd have rated it positively, but it has two of the most annyoing minigames I've ever played. Comic Sans and tetris inside Pixel
