What’s Next for Fuse?

We continue working to improve Fuse, our 3D character creator. This week, Fuse character uploads will be pointed towards Mixamo 2.0, which will mean faster asset processing, no viewer plugin, and blendshape settings that are remembered by the website, minimizing the amount of time you will need to re-rig your character. Some rocking new features you can look for in Fuse 1.4 include:
  • Automatic hat and hair fitting - never worry about hat-hair again

  • Automatically generate multiple character mesh resolutions - polycounts for desktop and mobile, and automatic generation of the mid and low res versions for imported characters (as long as the UV templates are followed)
  • Soft mod tools for clothing and hair adjustments - get the perfect fit
There will definitely be more, but we just wanted to confirm the "for sure" items. We're also planning on adding a ton of medieval/fantasy content (most popular survey result). No definite release date set right now, but the smart money is on some time in June or the beginning of July.

What is Fuse?

Fuse is a tool for anyone, from the casual hobbyist to the 3D professional, to create high-quality, royalty-free 3D characters in a matter of seconds. It's good for creating a model (apart from the vast lack of clothing and accessories).

When I exported and auto-rigged as prompted a hidden fee popped up asking me to buy the character that I made.

*sigh*

Just use to play around with model creation, wouldn't bother exporting the models unless you're absolutely loaded.

First of all - almost all the negative reviews I see here are wildly misinformed! You should know what you're getting with this software (unlimited free character models with textures - and 2 free rigs a week) - and it is an ENORMOUS time and money saver for those who need custom character models on a budget.

Let me clear a couple things up:

1. You can ABSOLUTELY export your characters as OBJ files and load them in anywhere

2. If you want to rig/skin your characters for animation you upload them to Mixamo - and get 2 free per week.

3. Mixamo also has free animation packs that can be downloaded to get you character up and running in-engine

All claims to the contrary are just wrong. So where are there additional charges:

1. If you need MORE than 2 rigs a week

2. If you want to purchase their custom animations

Now here's one thing to bear in mind: if all you do is export one unrigged character mesh (with textures) as an OBJ file - you've paid for the cost of this software EASILY. Any decent character modeller will charge many times that for just the model. If you add in a rig/skin and free animations you could pay for this software 30 times with one character.

The Fuse models in general look very good - nice topology and high-res textures. Pretty nice editing tools as well. Easy to work in the app, and updates have been consistently high quality. Mixamo also listens very closely to their userbase and is extremely gracious about feedback.

Now is Fuse perfect - no... it's still in development. The major weaknesses are in variation and editing. Specifically, it still needs ton of additional content: clothing, hair, accessories, etc. In addition, there are some un-editable meshes (like hair) that would allow for a lot more diversity if they were editable. I also wish it was easier to get started with a basic variation of gender/age/build/ethnicity... like some macro controls before digging in and customizing. Or even better would be automatic randomization within those broader categories.

I still find it a bit difficult to get nicely-middle-aged characters (especially women). They either get too wrinkly or too pristine.

The randomization features are helpful as well, but I wish I could clamp them within a range of non-cartoonish values sometimes.

I'd also like to see native substance export - or at least more export options to match various pipelines (like various PBR).

Finally, I think Fuse is starting to suffer from prosumer-focus. Namely, you have a million nicely named sliders for adjusting parameters, but it is getting cumbersome to navigate the options. Some power-user tools (key commands and modifiers for the mouse) may need to come along soon.

Overall, this is extremely impressive software that can save you a small fortune. I can go from idea to a lip-synched and animated character in Unity within an hour.

It really depends what you want. If you just want quick and simple models, and aren't fussed about detail in their form, this is good. If you want to really get into the detail of the character and model the anatomy to exactly how you envision it, this is not for you. It's basically the equivalent of a "model wizard". Choose head, next, choose torso, next, etc... Morphing is extrememly limited compared to Daz3D, for example, which is free. Any rigging involves uploading to their site, after creating an account, and using your 1 free montly rig or subscribing. Subscribing opens up more options, but it seems pointless when there are better free tools, and better subscription based software (Autodesk), or the hotkey driven free Blender software (create, rig and animate...but you have to remember a lot of keys).

In the end, I would not recommend this for any serious modeller. If you're a game creator and don't want to spend ages modelling extras for your game, choose this...but on sale.

Do not buy this software. I am in the process of requesting a full refund, as I have had numerous issues with attempting to get my free auto-rigged characters per week. I've sent numerous messages totheir customer support, using their website form, which half the time returns an unknown error, across multiple browsers. I left numerous messages with their phone support which goes to after-hours, during normal business hours, and have never received one single reply back. This has been going on for months.

I highly recommend this. I am basing my decision as a modeler who uses Modo and Zbrush as well as various other modeling and painting software. The models are a good base with a flexible dial adjustments for a more unique look. It is great to start off with for sculpting a basic humaniod form. No problems and very little adjustments needed in bringing it to Modo or Zbrush or any other modeling software. Polycount is fairly high but has a well design topo and good quality for the next generation gaming. Mixamo did a great job with each release of this product adding more content as well as a lower poly count TF2 characters and Cartoon Characters. I normally choose to keep my model for export from Modo into Unity, but you can bring it back into Fuse and it will seperate it into parts for Assembly. Once you reasemble your character you can send it over to Mixamo which provides 2 free rigs per week which is usually enough. In Mixamo they have a few free animation including a free Basic Locomotion Pack which is generally used for a Character Controller in Unity and from Mixamo to Unity is an easy export via FBX.

Update 2015 April 10th, it also has a nice Substance material for the skin which is highly flexible and adjustable. Also I notice another free update for Brutes which looks very nice.

I've been exploring FUSE a lot as a source for characters for a UE4 game I'm trying to develop. I had a month of the "indie pack" (not on steam, but through their subscription) and successfully got a FUSE character moving around in the UE4 environment.

FUSE is unique in that it's essentially middleware that's trying to do the jobs of 5 people in a team that usually consists of 10, so it won't be able to do everything, and doesn't claim to. It'll be able to make awesome looking characters that are rigged for very cheap, and on their site, there are animations you can buy. Or, because the characters are rigged, you can animate them on their own.

Will FUSE characters be able to immediately drop into (name of program)? Probably not. They might need some coaxing. You might have to get really into (said program) and learn what it is that makes it work... but this is a good thing.

For UE4, a hang up was on the skeleton and the material quality. For months, I was going on their forums and freaking out about how a UE4 skeleton download option would be great, or how sometimes the materials didn't come through looking the best - because UE4 didn't naturally know how to handle some of the FUSE character's files. Well, after months of awesome awesome customer support on thier forums - they came through with that skeleton. Plus, not that it's their job to fix things in a totally different program for me, but they're planning an update for the UE4 materials.

I'm a believer. These guys are keeping pace with the bigger game engines and are inching closer and closer to that "dream product" you want it to be. They've bitten off a lot, but they're delivering, and i'm very excited to see where this goes - and to use it in my game.This is a tool, and an awesome one, but just don't expect it to go ahead and make your game for you! That's your job!

I recommend this for people who aren't very good at modeling human characters/don't know how/don't want to. The price is VERY cheap for the amount of stuff you get + free updates. You also get unlimited free rigs for characters made in Fuse. That means you can make as many characters using Fuse as you want. It also means a lot of negative reviews need editing.

To everyone bashing the program learn how to use it. In less than twenty minutes I made my character/uploaded it to Mixamo/ autorig on the mixamo site/downloaded the .fbx/ran the autorig controls cript and now I have a character ready to fully animate in Maya. If you understood how long that would take from scratch you would never complain and whine. This is a godsend of a program.

Good piece of software to block out temporary placeholder characters or templates to futher customize after autorigging. You get two auto-rigs per week for free, including a very basic locomotive animation set (basic idle, walking and jumping) which should be plenty for most hobbyists/indies. Obviously not a replacement for having an actual human model and rig characters, but it's really quick and easy; you can get from nothing to a fully rigged custom FBX in about half an hour.
Depeding on where you use it, the rig might require some tweaking (in Cinema 4D, you need to manually define falloffs for some problematic armatures like the fingers and balls of the feet, for instance), and the materials will probably need some work (both Blender and Cinema 4D need you to manually enable alpha blending of hair meshes) but for the most part you'll have a ready to use model, especially as a placeholder.

Many reviews mention the cost of additional auto-rigs and ready made animation sets as "hidden fees", but when I got the software a year or two ago the fact that additional riggings and pre-made animations would cost extra was plainly mentioned several times in the description, just like it is now.

With the new update I can create a wide variety of characters and import them into UE4 in no time at all, makes for rapid prototyping of idea's & concepts with good looking assets. Mixamo have done a really good job with the update and free rigging make it a solid bit of software. 10/10.

From what I want to use it for, it's working pretty well. You can create a good deal of diverse body types that are instantly available for GMod. That's right, Fuse makes them into ragdolls INSTANTLY; physics and all.

My only gripe is I dunno if they can do faceposing yet, but since I'm going to replace the heads with non-faceposed ones, it's not a problem.

Buy it at a discount, like I did.

as someone who knows bare-minimum to 3D creation, the interface is pretty user friendly. I was able to learn pretty quickly how to use the program. I purchased it with hopes to have a solid 3D reference for my own characters faces. Customization works well enough, though I do wish I had more liberty/ freedom to push the facial features further and make them more unique and personal. The customization seems to be on the level as Sims/ Dragon Age: Inquisition in that regard. One other thing i'd like to see is In the beginning stages of developing the character is options available for skin color/ complexion readily available. But, I can see that this is a program to quickly create stock characters, which is fine. There's still quite a bit to explore and learn from this program, so I will have to mess around with a lot more of the features and update the review.
overall for an artist like myself, it is an excellent resource to have a model that you can move at any angle for drawing reference.

This review is addressed to anyone who plans to use this tool for game or mod development. If you're looking for software just to mess around with on its own, then you may wish to look around for another point of view.

If you know what you're getting for your money, and understand the purpose for which you're purchasing this software, then it may pay for itself after a few short uses. I would first like to point out that my "0.8 hours on record" is not accurate as the desktop shortcut for this software (as well as blender and some other applications) does not open through steam by default. More accurately I have used this software for about 10 hours.


Creating a character in Fuse is very easy,and while the default proportion options for your characters seem limited at first, you can modify that in the program's preferences. The clothing options are fairly limited, but as I am primarily using these models as bases to modify later, it's really not that big of a concern. One nice thing about the clothes however is the ability to recolor them as you see fit, so you don't have to go with the defaults. Also, after downloading the model you will have UV map available to edit your your leisure.

The character creation itself in Fuse isn't all that special when compared to open source software MakeHuman, but where Fuse really shines is the rigging. Rigging a model can be a time consuming and tedious process that will really dig into a indie developer's or modder's time, especially when working with numerous characters. With Fuse you can simply upload your finished model to their website, and it'll be rigged within a minute or two. As I understand it, it was only recently that they started allowing unlimited free rigs, which now makes the software infinitely more useful.

Once your character is uploaded and rigged on their server, you are given the option to apply some free animations to your character (which quite honestly are a bit underwhelming), purchase ones from their asset store, or just download your rigged model. The prices on the store seem fairly reasonable, but so far I have just download my rigged model and animated it myself later. If a time comes when I am having trouble getting an animation down, or just want to save time, it probably wouldn't be a bad choice to jump back into the store and buy a couple of their animations.

But you may be asking, "if I am making a game or mod to sell, do I really want to use a character creation tool with such limited options when compared to working freehand?" While it's ultimately up to you if you're going to use the characters as is, I find it incredibly useful to use the finished models that I get from Fuse as bases to modify and expand upon in separate modeling software. Being able to get a decent looking, fully rigged model into Blender for editing in about 15-20 minutes is nothing short of incredible.

There are a couples things I would like to see added to Fuse later down the line, such as being able to export the model with a blank (though already defined) UV map, so that I can more easily modify the skin of the model once it is in blender/photoshop, or perhaps create models with an odd amount of limbs/features for more interesting creature design.


tl;dr If you're a small developer, this software is absolutely worth it for the rigging alone. MakeHuman is still a great program, but being able to have a fully rigged model that is ready to modify within minutes is an invaluable resource. Making unlimited rigs free was the best decision they have made yet.

EDIT: I have modified my original review to reflect a correction from a developer comment. Originally I wrote that the editing of proportions was very limited, but as it turns out it is in fact possible to modify the limits through the programs preferences.

Fuse is easy to use and work about the same way as the Sims character creator. It gives you a lot of different bodies and parts to work with in order to create new characters.

The reason so many people review this software as a negative product is the fact that it used to cost money to download your characters after they have been riged. Early 2015 mixamo made rigging free, so it's not a problem anymore :)

The only thing they should improve are more hair, shirts, pants and other miscs.
They also offer a easy way to export models in to sfm or gmod, without using any of the modeling programs like blender or maya, for creators not so familiar with those programs, like myself.

I use this to make sfm models and models for games I am creating. If your a serious sfm'er I recommend. If you need lots of human-like 3d models this is for you. I love this and recommend it.
Also please add tf2 pyro clothes.
