I absolutely LOVE this game and the Baldur's Gate series. Ever since I was a kid! I never got around to beating this and was so excited to find it on Steam. It's just when I finally got to almost having an awesome brawl with vampires, I ran into a bug that prevented me from moving forward and now I haven't touched the game in months because some of us don't know how to mod the hell out of something or aren't very computer literate. I'm really disappointed. I was super excited to spend my day off kicking Bodhi's ayuss.

Before the recent updates Baldur's gate 2 enhanced edition was a near perfect and totally complete version of the old Baldur's gate 2 game. However, unfortunately the new updates have fundamentally changed the game including terrible new character A.I., oddly dull bright character sprites, altered timing in combat, altered ability rolls and combat rolls, etc...

I am not one to normally say this, but if you can, download an older verion of the game for free from the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ or some other website because this current version is rather insulting in the fact that Beamdog did not allow the long time players a choice in this odd massacre of a classic game from years ago.

However, if you do decide to pay for this, you can expierience the game how it has been played for the better part of the past 15 years by right clicking it in your steam inventory, going to properties, Betas, and then selecting the bgiiee 1.3 Beta. It is not really a Beta, but the cpmpletely finished game as it should be played.

The current owners are terrible in digging their grimy little claws and uncreative influence into a perfectly good game. They are fine expanding upon it with the interqual and the planned prequel but the 2.0 and up updates are wrong and unreccomendable.

This game is great. Ignore the recent negative reviews unless you are anti-LGBT. There is an LGBT character in it; that's why people hate it...Some gamers are so emotionally stunted...

(Over 100 hours easily in the original box edition)

bg 2 was my first rpg back in 2006, so i know about this game LIKE A LOT and i couldn't miss enhanced edition.
well, for me bg ee 2 has some flaws (mostly because it's new weird tab-oriented engine had some conflicts with my old laptop) but in general i actually liked it.

new characters are nice and mostly usefull. finally we have a true thief, not dual class, not multiclass, not protagonist and not betrayer. neera and dorn are pretty cool too. rasaad... well, having a monk in your party is sort of a challenge! :D
and all the new characters have long and interesting personal quests, so that is great addition to the well-known plot.

the second part is so much better than bg ee 1 (especially bg ee 1's russian version, that one was a NIGHTMARE FULL OF CRASHES, LACK OF LOCALISATION AND HATRED). so if you doubt about trying that game — don't be. ( if you are from russia maybe you should hurry up while russian localisation didn't came and destroyed everything). oh and another important moment for russians: YOU CAN HAVE A BEAR IN YOUR PARTY IN THIS GAME.

and if you're lucky and have less old pc than mine you probably will enjoy the game without any lags at all! or not.

Loved this game. Ever since it came out originally and have played it multiple times thoughout the years. Decided to get it on steam so I would always have it handy as I kept misplacing it. All was well, just like the game I remembered and loved, THAT IS UNTIL!!! Why did they have to update it, they have completely ruined it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled using original version, yet to see if this will make a difference but I can see I am not the only one who is displeased with new update so thought I would add my two pennies worth. You never know if enough people complain they may think twice before messing with a classic in the future!

P.S Reinstalling using original version did work, obviously you cant join multiplayer unless you are all on the same version so there arn't many people on but interface is original and that is what really counts, right? Anyone wanting to play original just go to the game in your library, properties, then betas. Click on top version and install from there! Baldurs Gate the way it was meant to be seen!!

The game is one of the originals, at its best. One of the Godfathers of RPGs. It is not a game you can just jump right in and play. It may seem too much for newcomers, but if you stick with it, you will be rewarded with one of the best games ever created (gameplay & storyline).

I've ignored all of the new comments about a new UI. The changes are so minimal it is petty to even complain. Some good changes, some bad.

Lots of people seem to be complaining about version 2.0 of the game, not realising that you can roll the game back to version 1.3 (i.e. the version with the bug fixes but without the bs) under beta programs within the steam client. You don't have to play version 2.0 if you don't want, and version 1.3 is the best version of the enhanced edition due to bug fixes.

Beamdog Review
I never write negative reviews. I love supporting companies by providing positive feedback and encouraging people like Beamdog to remaster our favorite games. This review isn't about the game or any of the gameplay mechanics. Nooooo, this review is about something so much worse than I let on. I have played Baldur's Gate 2 since I was 8 years old and it has been so near and dear to me that I cannot begin to express how elated I was at owning the remastered version, which is practically the only readily available version left online. So this review isnt about the game, but about the company and their "liberties" they have taken on our beloved classic-- A classic game so timeless, it is frequently listed as one of the best games and RPGs of all time.

What did Beamdog do that was so bad?

Beamdog, I want to personally and come out and say for all fans of BG2 that bought your game..

This game became less about remembering about the times we played it when we were kids or young adults, and more about putting Beamdog's dreaded arbitrary personal stamps all across BG2's UI.

1. Reconfiguring the spellbook (this just ripped my soul out of me)
2. Entirely scrapping the character portrait screen and replacing it with uncountable nuances that make it hard to even describe what was there before.
3. Changing the map display
4.Changing the inventory screen
5.Changing weapon icons
6. Simplifying item statistics
7. Changing the journal
8. God just too many to count...

Baldur's Gate 2 is Grueling
Making this game more accessible and user friendly isn't what fans of BG2 want. We want the challenge we remembered and the time consuming, rewarding experience of this perfectly crafted game. The game simply has little room for improvement on its original construction, besides some of its outdated graphics. We want all the quirks of the original game, and the massive game that Black Isle created, not Beamdog.

These Details Might be Small

But they matter more than one single change that was made for "optimal" organization or helpfulness. Baldur's Gate 2 isn't supposed to hold your hand and it shouldn't be changed like this. People that buy this game, including me, that are disappointed, will personally go out of their own way to make this barely recognizable classic fail and your company to lose the privledge of meddling with a piece of art so valuable, it proved to be too much for your company to responsibly manage with respect, and care to the creators, as well as the die hard fans.

Art is often said to belong to the public once it is crafted, because it exists with flaws, and is in our memories. We connect with these pieces of work on a level that we can see in ourselves, and our past. Everyone that enjoyed this game when it was released played one of the greatest games of all time.

Beamdog, do yourself a favor and fix this trash or let some other capable company fix what you have destroyed, because this isnt art anymore, its trash that I have to tolerate. Im a positive person and have always tried to be, but this is just awful.

Whatever you do...

I just... I dont know why you would do this. I call to mind the ancient painting of Jesus in Spain that the nun tried to restore, making him resemble a downs chimpanzee. This is that you have done Beamdog. You have turned my Jesus painting, that I have been playing since before i could masturbate, into a chimpanzee with an extra chromosome. TAKE THE CHROMOSOME BACK!

I loved the game, but the latest update really messed everything up.
Just get the original on GOG and mod the hell out of it.

I love this game! I have since it first came out and I bought its CD-ROM version! When it was released in Steam (Enhanced Edition) I also bought it and really enjoyed it! But as so many others here in the reviews, I can’t even bear to play it in its current form (update 2.0). They managed to ruin a perfect formula, with messed up journal, weird zoom in and out for the map, and complete overhaul of the beautiful previous UI and menu. The game has lost its charm! I really hope that the developers will give us the option of playing it in a mode that pays respect to the original that we love! Until then I cannot continue to recommend this once great game!

Everything changed when the Update 2.0 Nation attacked.

As for the actual review:

I'm terribly nostalgia blind for this game. It's very good on it's own merit but as a 20-something-year old that's been watching/playing this for as long as he can remember it's smothered in rose colored glasses. out of 200+ games in my library Baldur's Gate II and Skyrim are eternally armwrestling for the #1 spot. with nearly 500 hours played on EE alone I obviously love this game......so why the negative review?

Like every other BG2 veteran I loathe, LOATHE the 2.0 update. Maybe for different reasons than the others.

When Baldur's Gate EE was announced I decided to replay Baldur's Gate and the sequel as a preemptive test of stability checking for bugs, crashes, glitches, etc.

Note: this also includes the expansions
Bugs in classic BG installed from disc: 1 (High Hedge, undying skeleton)
Bugs in classic BG2 installed from disc: 5 (dialogue bugs, a few invincible monsters)

Bugs in BG EE: 20+ (mostly dialogue bugs, gamebreaking but fixed with a reload)
Bugs in BG2 EE: 20+ (same as above)

I haven't played BG EE 2.0, so I don't know about it....but oh boy....BG2 EE....

Bugs in BG2 EE 2.0: ∞........after 2.0 game stability tanked for me, reinstalling, stability mods, monkeying around in regedit, nothing has fixed it thus far.

It's not just a rainbow of bugs, it's just 1 that keeps breaking my sanity, when entering an area random NPCs randomly spawn.

When 2.0 first came out I was kind of excited because of Legacy Of Bhaal difficulty, after 2,000+ hours on classic I thought this was going to be atleast a little refreshing, and it might have been. but when you're trying to fight Firkraag and a few dozen Neebers spawn, constantly breaking the fight with stupid conversation, breaks what immersion this game has. Some areas are more prone to this glitch, Windspear Hills dungeon, Planar Sphere, De'Arnise keep just to name a few.
playing this game solo is hard enough, on LoB it's mindbreaking, then with random avalanches of Neebers it's impossible.

classic BG2 rating: 10/10, perfect game for a nostalgia blind idiot.
BG2 EE rating: 9/10, tad bit unstable, made the game look sleeker, old dogs don't like new tricks.
BG2 2.0: 5/10 It's still playable if you want achievements and the like.
Neeber Apocalypse: 0/10, by the time I got through the first 3 chapters I had enough Bullets +2 to build a continent free of Neebers

BG2 is one of the best games of all time.
BG 2 enhanced edition is positively the worst version of the game.

I specifically only bought it to play multiplayer with a friend, because I assumed an enhanced edition surely would have the most polished multiplayer, right?

Riddled with bugs. You can't start a new multiplayer game without being forced to create a complete party (in a game known for having great NPC party members), constant crashes, random disconections, and strange lag whenever you pick up items without being the host. And many other minor problems.

Although I have not gotten all the new npcs, I can tell that the ones I've gotten to (a thief and a wild mage) are terribly written, and have no respect for the setting of forgotten realms. The writers clearly either did not read into the setting, or just did not care. Not to mention that they clash horribly with the old party members, and barely interact with them. It seems silly that jaheira would comment on a drow joining the party but not a VAMPIRE of all things.

Bugs+terrible graphics make this a bad version of the game, and the additional npcs are badly written.
Do not buy.

As a veteran of the originals, I wanted to relive this game as one of my favourite games of all time.

Unfortunately, the "Enhanced" edition, I found, was plagued with bugs and it took me a LONG, excrutiating time to work past them (ignore them, do things that wouldn't set them off, keep specific save files in case a certain quest NPC didn't spawn etc). The extra content is laughable, but, some parts were done well; it's just that the other parts were so poorly done that it undermined all their efforts, from the voice acting to the puzzle "difficulty" to the map design, all fell flat.

I found that the only way to make the game playable was by modding THE ABSOLUTE HELL out of it. It STILL NEEDED: an ease-of-use fix, AI improvement, difficulty improvement, new portraits and fundamental class and spell balancing! I also added some class kits, NPCs and looser race restrictions. That is a LOT to still need from an "Enhanced" edition, things they should have already considered, things that were ALREADY out there and things that people were already using (for free, implemented by the community's fanbase).

In fact, and I can't believe this is true, the best thing about the Enhanced Edition is the forum support! That... is not what you want to say about any game. At least it was something though, the community is very passionate, helpful and a great bunch of people.

I really wanted this game to work and be the improved version I expected.

And then...

I found Pillars of Eternity.

Get Pillars of Eternity instead (on Steam). This is the game (much like the droids) you were looking for and I cannot recommend the game enough. Pillars of Eternity is a FLAWLESS, FAULTLESS extension on this RPG style. It's got a gritty, deadworld Diablo 1 feel with Skyrim type graphics and a 6-party, top-down RPG gameplay. It's well written, completely bugless (so far as I have experienced), the combat is smooth, the game is intuitive, the AI is smart and it has an original story line. Flawless. Everything the original BG series was to me but here in 2016, what the continuation of the BG series should have been (and in some ways, is).

Buy BG: Enhanced Edition if, at some point in the future, you'll want to wish to go back in time and punch yourself in the face for not getting Pillars of Eternity instead.

I write this review because I just wish someone had pointed me to PoE a long, long time ago.
