Om dette spil

Crashed and alone on a world mankind tried to leave behind, Darkout challenges players to survive on Illuna, in harsh, procedurally generated biomes, utilizing the game’s sandbox features to build shelters, craft weapons, and research new technologies.

You are not alone. Light-sensitive creatures prowling the landscapes become most active at night and in a world shrouded by clouds the security of day will never come, instead, twilight periods allow players minor security to explore, rebuild, and gather resources.

Darkout’s deep history manifests itself through logs left behind by others, some recent, while others hearken back to long-extinct natives of Illuna, offering glimpses into what events led up to the pandemonium that now persists.

How will you survive?

Welcome to Darkout – Stage 1

What is stage 1?

Thanks to everyone’s feedback and a year of Beta the game is finally in a place which we can consider the base version of Darkout, Stage 1.

From this point on we will expand on the universe, Biomes, Gameplay, Items, etc.

We currently have 3 more Key stages planned and will reveal all the details of these plans as we develop the game further, not unlike our predecessors in the Sandbox genre.

In-between the stages we will also have some mini updates as needed :)

Stage 2 – 4 will contain
  • More Story
  • Why are you here and what is really going on? All this will be revealed as Each stage contains a new act for the storyline
  • More Biomes
  • Underwater Biome, Sky Base, Feral Jungle, etc
  • An End Game
  • Fix the Ship or Illuna? Only time will tell
  • More enemies
  • The Penguin Drones
  • More bosses with each Stage
  • Survivors
  • Dead, alive, evil, good?
  • Underground Bunkers / Labs
  • Unique treasures, enemies, stories
  • Vehicles
  • Sub, Mech, and?
  • Weapons, Devices, rewards, achievements, etc!

To know more about the current version of the game and future additions planned please read the post here: http://www.darkoutgame.net/index.php?threads/darkout-steam-release-dec-4th.3151/

Reviewing the 1.3.1.2 beta patched version of this game as released right now, Nov 5, 2014.

Warning, long read but I tried to touch as many major points as I could yet still be "brief".

This is important to know because the game, while "officially released" is only complete through phase 1 of 4 and runs thru patch 1.2.9. You have to enable the beta to get some new content and bug fixes. This game is a fully functional sandbox game from an exploration/building standpoint, but is only partially complete from a story line perspective as well as feature implementation.

So, with that said. Would I recommend this game? As the game stands today, in general, yes I would recommend this game under the following circumstances:
  • you get it on sale.
  • you don't mind enabling the beta patch.
  • you don't mind waiting for story line content as the developers continue to code away and some things may very well get dropped from their "complete" game when all is said and done.
  • you can live without multiplayer, at least for now.

If those don't apply to you, I would suggest you wait until the game is more complete, if it ever is as there is some indication that development may stop before this hits 100% completion on all 4 phases.

With that set of caveats out of the way and if you are still interested here are my thoughts on the game:

I really like this game and I really like the unrealized potential this game has. While it could end up being a real stinker long term, I am happy with my money investment (got it on sale for like 75% off) and won't feel ripped off if this is not developed any further. Some of the bugs are a bit annoying without the beta patch to fix them and there is not a lot of guideance in the game so you have to piece things together from game play and what little info you can gleen from the wiki and forums. The building mechanics are pretty decent and I never really felt the game to be TERRIBLY grindy, although it does have some grindy elements as most sand box games do.

Here are some pros (what I love) and cons that I personally feel the game has at this stage:

What I love about the game
  • The Sci Fi theme as I have been a SciFi fan for a very long time (nearly 40 years)
  • The devs are involved with the community and respond to suggestions and bugs if you join the forums.
  • The graphics and music are engaging. Just check the vids and pics for the game to get an idea of what I am talking about.
  • The concept of light as a strategic game element is used in a rather cool way that I have not been exposed to before.
  • The game offers a pretty decent challenge to newly created characters in normal mode.
  • The game has a story line that is intriguing to me, although it is incomplete at this time so it is more of an intro to the story line than a fully realized story line at this point.

Current cons, which hopefully will go away as this is developed
  • No mapping system. There are tools to work around this a little bit (gps and radar), but if you like Terraria's mini map (I do) then this will be a dissappointment for you as well.
  • Incomplete story line as mentioned before. You basically get an intro story line and then it just abruptly stops as the content is not complete.
  • some minor placement bugs with wiring and devices. with 1.3.1.2 I have not run into anything game ending, but prior to that patch level, there were some that would cause game crashes.
  • NO MULTIPLAYER. While I love the single player experience. I have corrupted my daughter into being a gamer and she cannot enjoy this game with me like she can Terraria so that is a big disappointment for both of us at this time.

In summary, overall I have enjoyed roughly 200 hours of play time in this game with 3 different characters. With the final character I have exhausted the story line as well as all of the extra "diary" entries you can find that give you a view into happenings for the lives of others who came before your character. I am happy with my money investment and would recommend this for casual single player enjoyment.

Technical Notes:
The game has a fairly good core, but is buggy (some bugs are even game stopping, like corrupted saves). In addtion parts of it is extremely grindy and unfun. It literally took me a day or two to find a single core I was looking for, and I needed 8. Additionally, some materials are so rare you will spend days looking for them.

Development Notes:
This game is extremely slow on releasing any patches (only one minor bug patch in a year). The community page and forums are mostly dead and the developer rarely releases any notes on what is going on. In fact it took quite some time for them to inform the community that they lost a core member of their team, were dropping multiplayer support. All and all the dev is extremely un-responsive to the community. The dev laid out a 3 stage content plan for the game. Stage 1 is not complete and baised off of the recent development woes I do not think they will be able to get out a stage 2 or 3.

Closing:
I cannot recommend this game in its current state because it is rarely updated and the dev has terrible communication skills with their community. I would hold off several years before purchasing to give the dev time refine the game.

Another entry in the increasingly crowded sci-fi Terraria-clone genre. Anyone who has played Terraria will know more or less what to expect in this game. Procedurally-generated world, exploration, resource collection, crafting, etc. A lot of basic Terraria concepts and mechanics still apply. In particular, digging a "hellevator" (a mine shaft straight down to the magma-filled lowest levels of the world, with water at the bottom to break your fall) is just as useful in this game.

The things that are notable with this particular game:
  • Hi-fi graphics that capture much more detail than the pixelart graphics used in most Terraria-clones.
  • Lightness / darkness mechanism. The darker your surroundings are, the more likely that things-that-go-bump-in-the-night are to spawn around you, and the stronger these dark monsters are. Bathing these monsters in light will weaken them noticeably, Alan Wake style.
  • Loads of high-tech futuristic devices and set pieces to build your base with. Power circuits and switches to turn lights and devices on and off.
  • Multitudes of light-producing gizmos in various styles and colors to craft and decorate your base with.

My main criticisms of the game are a poorly-conceived main storyline progression system that requires random item drops, and a lack of minibosses to fight for loot drops. The game also seems to still be a work in progress despite not being in Early Access, so occasional bugs still crop up, the more common of these being inventory items dropping to the ground when you try to drag them onto the hotbar.

If you like crafting, survival, gathering, exploration and sandbox games, then you should enjoy Darkout. Graphics are pretty decent for this sort of game, and the atmosphere has a special feel, its not redundant or boring. Some areas are pretty and colourful while other areas are dark and creepy. You start off simple, gathering and crafting things, trying to survive shelter, weapons etc.. Soon your little shed may end up being a huge complex mining base or a well fortified outpost. So there is a sense of progression and satisfaction which I love very much. If you are still hesitant about the game, wait for a sale :]

I can't seem to think how to write this review properly right now, so I'll just go with an easy pro-con list.

Pros:
  • The environments are quite pretty to look at and the lighting is nice (though the player character looks like a bad CGI creature from a 90's music video)
  • Has a lot of nice variety in terms of stuff to craft, mine or place
  • Uhhhh... I really can't think of any other points at the moment

Cons:
  • The story in this game is forgettable and uninteresting.
  • Poor audio editing (certain audio logs contain the voice actor/actress doing a line multiple times)
  • Game physics are very strange at times (falling the same distance at the same speed after activating a jetpack once in mid-air does significantly less damage than falling the distance normally)
  • The UI is occasionally a bit clunky and sometimes assumes actions you did not take
  • Controls in general feel unresponsive occasionally
  • Combat is an abysmal wreck, hit detection is very poor and usually works in the enemy's favor (their attacks can hit multiple times per attack)
  • EXTREMELY LUCK-HEAVY QUESTS, obvious padding
  • The game is WAY too dark, even for a game called "Darkout" and taking place on a different planet where darkness is a prevalent gimmick (seriously, 18 hour nights)
  • The amount of different, large, power-sucking devices required throughout the game to do separate actions is absurd
  • HAS FREQUENT STABILITY ISSUES, crashes, slowdowns, inexplicable framerate drops

In summary, if you must buy a 2D sandbox game and you already own Terraria, buy Starbound instead. If you own Starbound too, look into other games, but this game is not worth full price. Not by a long shot. Get this from a bundle or a huge sale if you must have this game for some reason.

...

For those curious about how I managed to spend over 150 hours on a game I hate, I didn't. 35-40% of that time is from me keeping the game in the background while I was watching videos or screwing around with Akinator. Of course, I did spend a good amount of time actually playing the game, since I did bother to get 100% achievements on it.

The game is good and I thoughly enjoyed it but the lack of content and the major lack of progress is quite painful since it has so much potential. Games like this are what give early access a bad name. looks very nice and has a good vibe but at the current price you will feel ripped off buying it. it is not a complete game and i doubt it ever will be. im really on the fence if i should give it a positive or negative, and to spite the fact it really doesnt deserve it i will be giving it a positve review since i got it on sale and for the short period i played it really was quite fun.

Currently the game is still unfinished. It was released in 1.0 Unfinished because they developers didnt know what early access, or Alpha meant(or just didnt want to admit that the game wasnt finished). The Multiplayer was completely abandonded. The company seems to be falling apart but trying to look like its not in an effort to comple the game(the lead developer announced they were leaving the company but shortly after all the requests for a refund stopped talking about it and still makes posts about the game). They game is supposed to have an end but dosent yet. We were told there would be 4 stages of development but before the second one was released they abandonded that devlopment style along with the multiplayer and other features that "Stage 2" was supposed to have. If you want a sandbox game there are 3 other games(not including Terraria the grandfather of the 2d sandbox genre) who although they are all still in Early Access have more content and are in a more complete state. I personnaly dont care about multiplayer, the fact that they abandoned it entierly, or the fact that they released an unfinished game as 1.0(plenty of EA, and Early Access, games have done so too). The main problem is that this game is Supposed to have and End(you will be able to keep building after the end), and it does not. If that changes I will change this review

First things first, this is a beautiful game. It's set on a world of perpetual night, and it manages to make it look amazing with the different zones all looking spectacular.

The combat is pretty frantic, especially when you get into the game and start coming across the different enemy types, all of which have their own little set of abilites and attacks to deal with instead of the far too common 'just give it more HP and make it red' style of enemy progress. It can get a little bit too hectic towards endgame though, with enemy spawns becoming extremely rapid. By that point you can just ignore them though.

Building is fun and fairly satisfying, watching your wooden hovel evolve into a high tech fortress is never going to stop being enjoyable and the tech progression is both big and fairly straightforward too. There's a fair few different 'this looks like a wall from Star Trek' type backgrounds and walls you can build with, but they are all kinda the same so that's a downside for the people who have to build that perfect unique base. You do need to wait for different items to be researched once you have the components, and there are build times too, which some people find annoying. I never had a problem with them, I just queued a few things up and went and did some renovations.

The real problem with this game is that it is not better known. Hopefully there'll be a decent bit of word of mouth going on at some point because this really does deserve a much bigger audience.

Well I picked this game up as part of a bundle, and truly did not expect to have as much fun with it as I have. I understand it is technically still being added to, although it is no longer in beta, but it feels far more complete to me than many other Early Access/Early games in the same genre that I have played. As the game stands now, it has furnished me with many hours of entertainment and I have still not maxed out all of the tech trees or fully explored the world I generated. In general, my rule for buying games that are not yet finished, is this: If, hypothetically, development on this game stopped tomorrow, would I still enjoy playing it? And I feel that with Darkout, the answer is probably yes.

If you are familiar with 2d sandbox-style sidescrollers like Terraria and Edge of Space, you will feel at home here. However, what Darkout does differently is adds light as a game mechanic, since the world you are building on is never fully illuminated, and enemies both spawn and gain health in darkness. There are several beautiful glowing plants that spawn and will keep you from dying before you set up your homebase, but you'll very quickly find that creating light sources will become your primary occupation. Once you've progressed further down the tech tree, your options for creating light sources become more elaborate, and you can create your own wonderland of lights just for the heck of it, if you like. I should probably also mention that this game does not have very many RPG elements, which is a big plus in my book. One of my gripes with other sandbox games is that they relied too much on random drops or big boss fights to get to the next level of crafting.

There is a storyline in the game, but finishing these quests is optional and shouldn't interfere with the rest of the game. As far as I know, you can completely ignore it if you wish, and still manage to find every ore, tool, machine, etc. while you build to your heart's content.

It is true that some of the building systems in the game are a little bit unintuitive, and if that's something that tends to get on your nerves, you will probably be unsatisfied, as I did find myself having to look a few things up here and there. However, having grown up with older games in which this was much more common, it's never particularly bothered me. The graphics in the game are quite lovely and allow for some really impressive building options. I suppose one of my gripes is about the music, which resembles the sort of track you'd find in a space-themed action movie these days. I guess it fits, but I get a little bit annoyed after a while, since it is tense, and I feel like the pace of the game is slower and a bit more peaceful.

Tl;dr version:
PROS
- Looks great
- Huge tech tree, lots of crafting options
- More based on crafting than roleplaying
- Multiple options for gathering ores
- Playing with light and colors is fun!

CONS
- Crafting is sometimes unintuitive
- Music gets annoying at times
- A few other small gripes which don't break the game: (Trees don't currently respawn, Game occasionally gets interrupted by autosave)

I really enjoy this game, reminds me of "Edge of Space", I just wish development was more active. This game has so much potential, but I suspect will quickly be eclipsed by others in time at the current rate of development. Nonetheless, this is a fun game and has a great deal of promise assuming development continues.

As someone who put 500 hours into Terraria, I had high expectations for this game. I think it will be great in time, but it isn't there yet. That said it is pretty fun to play, and easy to play a couple hundred hours. Which makes it worth the price you pay for it IMO. The most frustrating thing about this game is that it doesn't seem to have the audience to support a good wiki yet, so many of the answers that you are looking for aren't available.

This is a beta review. I have to say this game is great i Have put hours into it and enjoyed every minute. Even in beta for my it is playable and I personally have had new real bugs. I have ask question in forums and the dev have answer so support is being offered. I will say they have advised their will be a wipe in the future but other then that I have no issues with this game. So much I am writing a review my first ever lol.

Reminiscent of Terraria and Starbound brought visually current, the game has a unique eerieness and is immediately engaging.

Only 6 hours in, but like this one a lot. Hard to put down!

pros:
Pleasing Graphics
Excellent atmosphere
Well paced development
Crafting is simple, but not brainless
Building is very satisfying
Very cheap!

cons:
Enemies can get inside your shelter by spawning in an off-screen part
Gets a bit stuttery when there are lots of light sources, even on very high end system
Crafting is perhaps, just slightly too simple in the long run
Sound effects are very basic
Some bugs

I Feel like people are trying to say that this game is not finished enough and the only thing I feel is like I never reach the end of what has come so far, I am addicted, simply put, I have played over 300 hours on terraria and I cannot quite compare the two games, they both handle themselves on a different scale of eachother and both games are really really awesome. if you like terraria and want to try something that is a bit more advanced, then I strongly recommend this gem, specially now when its so godamn cheap! its not short and not broken, more things to do than terraria had when it was released :) and more of a challenge to get it

There are some bugs present, but dev team, despite loosing some members, continues to work on game. It's a little more complex than terraria.

Worth it on sale and with the recent patch they fixed the pixel perfect headache movement on terrain. Not bad.

I honestly don't get the hate the game recieves. Crashes, Not Finished, Unplayable or outright crappy.

The crashes have apparently been fixed since i didn't experienced any and while it's out of EA, it is still not finished.
Only the 1. Stage has been finished, the other are coming soon. They are already working on new stuff (Next patch contains turrets, vaults, teleporters...).

It takes to develope these things since those are rendered as 3D models instead of sprites.

Overall, it's actually a beatiful game with a rather unique Darkness/Light mechanic.

Perhaps it could be less grindy and needs more content but so far i'm content.
