It was good once, now it is just a pay to win.

Once you could buy all cards for ingame currency, now you just can buy the "new" packs. All my old decks became worthless, because i couldn't complete them (except i pay real money). Well done Ubi. I really regret spending real money in the early days. I will never ever pay anything to Ubisoft again. Ripoff company.

I've used to play the non-steam version before, so my playtime here is inaccurate.
MM: DoC struggles with several issues that make it hard to enjoy in the long run.

Firstly, progression is very slow. Rewards for a single match are negligible and you're only rewarded with a reasonable amount of gold (basic currency) when you level up. The problem is, after the first few levels it will take you around ten hours of playtime to get another one. Some mechanics are in place to make the grind less monotone, but they have their own share of issues.

There's a PvE mode available in the form of campaigns. Each campaign consists of 5 missions that, upon being completed with one of the six available factions for the first time grant a significant amount of gold plus some experience points. Clearing the entire campaign with a faction also grants a free booster pack. The problem is, those free boosters are largely useless, since following an overhaul in 2014 most cards from older sets can no longer be used in ranked play. The gold rewards for campaigns also happen to have a nasty incident in their early history. Two weeks after being introduced those rewards were increased by a factor of five and this increase was not retroactively applied to players who already cleared the campaigns. Since the increased rewards were ridiculous - clearing 2 missions took next to no time and granted as much as a single level up normally does - pretty much all the players who weren't already veterans found themselves in a situation where it would simply be easier for them to start the game anew (which isn't allowed), even if they already spent money on it.
The previously mentioned overhaul also made it impossible to gain seals (premium currency) without paying money for the game, even though previously they were received upon leveling up and as a reward for 6 consecutive days of playing. Since every new card pack is only available for seals for the first few weeks, this also means that paying players now have an actual advantage over non paying ones.

There's also a lot of balance issues. Unless you manage to build a decent deck, which involves lots of grinding or spending several AAA titles worth in money on card packs then you'll struggle even against mediocre necropolis players, mostly because dark magic school is broken to the point where it enforces the meta (not worth it to use any creature costing more than 4, because otherwise casting Soulreaver or Death Seal will remove it for a lower cost, while casting Wither will make it useless). Necropolis isn't exactly overpowered though: it just isn't really possible to counter if you lack cards, so for the first ~40 levels or something around ten times that amount in dollars/euros.

If you bothered to read this wall of text, you might've noticed that most problems are nailed down to the controversial overhaul, that:
1. added PvE campaigns and then screwed over everyone who finished them
2. made over half of the cards in the game useless by excluding them from ranked play or the so-called 'standard format'
3. removed all the free ways of gaining premium currency, except for some achievements that are mostly hard or even impossible to get without paying for the now obsolete card sets in the first place.

Point #2 effectively negatively affected paying players by making some neat decks that require a select pool of cards useless and wasting their money in the process, point #3 made the game feel like a 'pay to win' for free players, while point #1 was a bad decision that screwed over everyone. What all of those points have in common is that the combination of these things irrecoverably ruined the trust in the developer that many players had at that time.

Even with those problems playing MM: DoC can be enjoyable from time to time, but as far as I'm concerned, major updates tend to create more problems than they solve, not to mention that removing what used to be half of the cards available in game from ranked play instead of actually bothering to balance them (and not even managing to tweak the remaining half properly) was probably the most lazy development decision I've ever witnessed.
If you're looking for a more complex alternative to Hearthstone, you might want to check out Infinity Wars instead.

This game is engineered to be addictive - beware! You start out rather weak and want to get good cards. But there are thousands of them and so you either need to put in a lot of time or spend money. So you decide to play drafts and accumulate daily rewards to finally get enough to buy a box of cards. Then you buy the box and get a ton of junk and maybe one or two good cards that actually make it into your deck. Why did I waste so much time?

And then there's the game itself. It's pretty easy to get to a somewhat decent ranking. But then you get stuck. What happens is that there are several "broken" decks that are pretty much impossible to defeat unless you spend hundreds of hours playing or spending a lot of money. And sometimes the outcomes are pretty much random. Depending on what faction you are playing there are several other factions that will beat you nearly every time.

So combine the frustration of losses you can't do anything about with the frustration of putting in lots of effort for little reward and you realise that there are better uses of your time.

I came back after a year, had good memories of the game. Now it has become just another P2W piece of junk....

Literally the ONLY way to get the vast majority of cards is with real money. Even other card games that are P2W give you the option to grind for ridiulous amounts of time to get cards, but this one doesn't even do that anymore......

I don't know what happened but I am sad to have seen this game so ruined....

See how all the positive reviews are really old? The game is way too expensive and then they reshuffled things and made a ton of stuff no longer usable and it's just not worth your time. It's a shame because it was a good, fun game

If you aren't willing to spend a decent amount of money on a regular basis to buy cards in a game no one plays, then this game is not for you.

Edit: some people would like to point out that there are now various formats of play some of which will let you use (modified versions of) your old cards. I didn't mention this because it doesn't matter. The only way to get old cards is if you already have them, and so if you play the old style you will be playing pretty exclusively against people who already spent a ton of money on their cards.

While I had a lot of fun initially with learning the game, getting new cards and building different decks, I quickly realized this game was dead before I got here. It is in need of some serious rebalancing. At least 4/5ths of the online games I play are against Necropolis decks relying on Crippling. There are a few ways to minimize the effect of these (Enrage, Honor, repeatedly returning your creature to your hand, etc) but it is to the extent now that very few people even bother to play one of the other 6 Factions. I just can't get used to the idea that a game with so many options and gameplay styles can boil down to one factor.

The game is great, but is currently unplayable. Basically, this: http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/972494-Hearthstone-or-why-DoC-is-a-superior-game-and-why-UBI-should-fix-the-bug-ASAP?s=29112eda0515cb20d2680656f9690960

For the love of God, Ubisoft, please fix this game! I would not recommend investing any money or time into this game until they do so.

One thing to say. As time passes this game is more and more "Pay to win" ;( At the begining you had a chance even without buing at the shop = just play a lot and after some work you could play- now before you get any decent set - and manage to do sth with players that had cards from addon X before you ( cause they could buy it for gems not gold ) There is already new addon Y and.. oh most of your cards SUCKS again,,,
I played this long time and by any means i would not say i was good player... well i would say i was decent player untill there was standard mode intoduced and 80 % of my cards was banned.. ( playing open was nosense as all 'old' card packs have price in gems now ...) after that was just like above. This my personal opinion but right now playing without paying is huge waste of time.. and i have much better way to spend my money.

I’m having strong mixed feelings giving this digital card game a thumbs down. The actual gameplay of DoC is excellent. I love the multiple-lane game board and making decisions such as “Hmm, should I sacrifice this lane in order to fully control that lane?”. Wrestling board control away from my opponent is very dynamic - much more so than in Hearthstone. DoC has many layers of strategic depth, not only because of the multiple-lane game board but also due to the many varied play styles available.

Each faction has a certain way of approaching battle, and within each faction, heroes have unique abilities (spells, and spell school access) which can facilitate very different play styles within one faction. For example, consider two heroes within one faction. As they’re from the same faction, the creatures they get access to are the same, but their spells may greatly differ. The hero with Light spell access is going to have a distinctly different approach to board control than the hero that casts Dark (Death) spells, as the former focuses on buffs while the latter focuses on direct creature removal. I truly loved this dynamic element of deck-building and gameplay, and I also loved that the game didn’t feel pay2win at all. I’ve never spent money on DoC and I felt like I had a competitive Haven deck at Champion II while playing fairly casually (i.e. not grinding for hours and hours each day). Of course, if you want many different competitive decks, prepare to grind or hasten the process of collecting by paying.

So – the gameplay itself is awesome. The lack of pay2win (in my opinion) is equally awesome. Then why am I giving DoC a negative review? Because I think the customer service level of Ubisoft is awful, and as a result, I can’t trust them. I think it’s a bad idea to put your trust and time behind a developer for a digital card game that is not transparent in its communication to its player base.

Many weeks ago, a high number of players (including myself) reported an infinity loading bug in which you could not load into a regular “Standard” game -- the most popular game mode (the other game mode, “Open”, allows the use of very old cards which are not readily available without spending money, so of course Standard mode is what interests me and most other newer players). Obviously, this is a pretty critical bug, and the initial response from Ubisoft was extremely weak (“We’re aware of the issue but there’s not much we can do about it”). There has been no follow-up response nor has the bug been fixed, which is pretty dodgy in my opinion. I can accept that servers act wonky (for a short period), but I expect the communication level to be better.

If I was playing a single player game, I wouldn’t care so much about how transparent its developer was. But if I’m going to be playing an ever-evolving digital card game competitively against others, I want to feel like I can trust the developer.

I don’t trust Ubisoft, and in terms of digital card games, I suggest checking out Shadow Era or Infinity Wars instead.

Fun and highly-polished collectable card game with interesting mechanics, fast gameplay, tons of card variety, and cool card illustrations.

Pros and cons:

Pros:
  • +Fun single player campaign missions that gives nice rewards like booster packs and gold to buy more packs
  • +Tons of cards to collect that can be easily unlocked by playing through the campaign
  • +Weekly 8 player rules-of-the-week tournaments and monthly jackpot tournaments
  • +Creatures, abilities, spells and heroes are set to the Might and Magic mythos
  • +Good music and awesome card illustrations
  • +Six factions to play that each have their own unique mechanics and lots of hero cards to choose from add a lot of variety and depth to the game
  • +It's not Hearthstone

Cons:
  • -Small community
  • -The competitive meta focuses on only a few cookie-cutter builds
  • -No "draft mode" yet that's similar to Hearthstone's Arena (though Ubisoft has said they are working on it)
  • -Need a Uplay account (you don't need to install Uplay - just a Uplay account; either register or use an account you already have)
  • -It's not Hearthstone

I really recommend this game to players wanting to get into a collectable card game without spending money to have fun; I also highly recommend this to card game players who want to try something more complex than Hearthstone.

For an "ex" Magic the Gathering / MTG / MTGO player this game was a treat. My girlfriend found this game after I couldn't play Ascension with her. It was FTP, has even matching, and the fact we were able to : GET CARDS, Turn those cards into other cards, and easily get cards per level....this game has it all.

If there were to be any problems with this game it would be these:
1. The chat and managing of a friends could be a lot smoother in game.
2. Being able to purchase cards for others and give them or trade cards would be nice, specially between accounts of a family.
3. And getting no XP/Gold for practice is fine, but that's the only way you can challenge someone. At least give me a certain amount of rounds against my friends as unranked matches. Overall the matchmaking too could be refined.

Within the first hour of playing I was blown away. DoC is (in my opinion at least) the best digital CCG experience available today. Yes, that means that it's better than Hearthstone and all of the Magic the Gathering games released to date, as the former is far more simpistic (dare I say casual?), and the latter is little more than a hobbled version of the physical experience.

With distinct and varied factions, each offering unique playstyles, coupled with great art and Might & Magic fanservice, I would recommend that everyone who has even a passing interest in CCGs download DoC and give it a go.

To get you started, you can use the following referral code (yes, I went there. I'm not proud):

As a fan of Heroes of Might and Magic, this game really attracted me, as I could find all the creatures and heros I played with in HOMMVI , the game is very simple, just need some time to get used to the attributes of most cards , versatile game styles, 6 different factions to play with, make you never get bored, the campaign is very lucrative, so hard to say it is a pay2win game, u can use the money earned from the campaign to buy new card packs . also there is the ability to get any card u like in the Alter of Wishes, very good option.
The AI in the campaign is very fun to play againest, difficulty scales as u go throght, the match making is friendly and rewarding.
almost no limit on decks u can make decks from 59 cards up to 209cards, and as many as you like.
the art is very attractive and beautiful.
Also the amount of achivments is great , keeps you playing.

If u are reading this and havnt tried the game yet and would like to.
Signup using this link here so u can get all the starter decks =)
