Child of Light is a beautiful children's story book brought to life with an exquisite hand-painted world. You play as a child princess, exploring and fight your way to the truth in a dream which turns proves to be more than a figment of imagination.

You move around in the game by literally flying across the world from very early in the game. There is not much of gameplay outside combat other than avoiding traps and trying to hit the enemies from behind to trigger a ‘sneak attack’. Most of the enemies are optional but you’d want to fight them as frequently as possible to gain valuable experience which will come in real handy during the game’s much tougher boss fights.

The combat is Turned-interruption-based. There is a timeline bar on the bottom of the screen and every action takes a fixed amount of time to perform. The bar is towards the right is split into ‘casting region’, which is the envelopes the time it takes for player as well as the enemies to perform their move. The idea here is to hit your enemies while they are casting so you ‘interrupted’ them. Meaning they not only be able to perform their action, but they are also sent back a few notches behind the timeline, opening the window of opportunity for you to attack.

I was not very familiar with this type of combat mechanics as a result I died quite a few times during boss fights. I asked around and to many people they found the game very easy on the ‘advanced or normal’ difficulty I played on. I had to grind to level up in order to defeat the final boss, so again I suggest to engage in all encounters. There is no drawback to losing to an encounter, you simply start with a full health and mana at the beginning of the section or whenever there was a checkpoint. So the difficulty really depends on how familiar you are with this type of game.

There are certain things I didn’t like about the game though. I feel the combat system doesn’t relay a lot of the vital information to the player. For example, you do not know the health of the enemies nor do you know which type of elemental stuff you have your team equipped. This means you are forced to memorize how you distributed your equipment and cannot make a well-timed final blows with no stats to look after. This especially hurts in the boss fights where the margin of error is very thin. Also the crafting is also not very well explained. You basically equip elemental attacks and defenses by equipping specific colored gems. You can also combine gems to create a different colored one. The game does not really explain which colors are possible to craft. So it is possible for a lot of players to go through half the game without knowing a certain gem color exists. I suggest you look into a guide just to make sure you get caught up with all the colors so you can equip your team with more organized attacks and defenses.

I am not a fan of Ubisoft as a whole, but this is a side of Ubisoft I really admire. In the end I feel the game could have been a more rounded experience if they had more time and budget. A lot of effort had gone into making this game visually spectacular, unfortunately it meant the core mechanics of the game suffered and stretched a bit too thin for my taste. In the end these drawbacks can be frustrating, but does not detract much from the beautiful experience this game delivers.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
Liked the game so far Uplay won't let me play anymore. Do you see this ubisoft?

Surprisingly good looking game with awesome graphics game play and story. Recommend for everyone who enjoy arcade style games and ost is great too. Game leaves you with fell like closing a great fairy tale story book after u finish it! Art work is superb too!-9/10

This title is basically an art project mixed with simple RPG game. The graphics are very unique, soundtrack is great and the general feel is very athmospheric and dreamlike. It's definetly has slight case of style over substance going on. If you strip away all the "artsy" stuff the actual game isn't too amazing. Basically you have side-scrolling RPG platformer with turn-based battles. It has nice little story, some witty dialog and interesting characters.

As whole I think it's very compelling game and I enjoyed playing it. If you don't care about the graphics and soundtrack, this probably isn't right game for you.

Beautiful game, lots of characters, if you play it in hard ( like it should be!!) the game has a good challange without been super hard to pass.

A fairy tale of a game with wistful music and dreamlike environments, and an incredibly open feeling world due to being allowed to fly freeform through the entire thing.

The game tells the story of an Austrian Princess, Aurora, who ends up in a mystical fantasy world called Lemuria, told that she must save the world from the evil Queen and recover the Sun and Moon, with the help of her magical crown, magical sword, and her friends. From there begins a rhyming journey across Lemuria, meeting jesters, gnomes, beasts, and more that join your party. The game is set up in JRPG fashion, with turn based battles that are reminiscient of Grandia with the use of the timeline, and interruption skills that let you halt and delay enemy attacks, and let them do the same to you. Your party levels up constantly, and while individual levels don't offer too much, over time you accure new skills, upgrade old ones, and get a steady feed of progress across your entire party (as even inactive party members get full XP!) Equipment is handled through the use of "Oculi", colored gems that can be combined with themselves to make bigger versions with new effects, or with other colors, entirely new versions with new powers.

Party members are all useful in their own way, and I found myself using all of them except the final party member you get, a great deal. They tend to be split along usual lines, physical attackers, healers, tanks, magical attackers, and etc, along with a party member who specializes in manipulating the timelines. Each character has three separate skill trees they can go down that emphasizes particular skills and stats, and Stardust, found through the game, can be used to permanently increase acharacter's stats, allowing you to customize them further (or just feed them all to Aurora because the main character should obviously be the best at everything.)

The game feels just long enough to tell the story it wants to tell, and the world helps it every chance it gets. The music is immersive, the art and world are watercolored and move you across lots of different environments. Honestly the only thing I felt really detracted from the game was the forced rhyming scheme. It doesn't follow any real rhythm and just focuses on trying to rhyme lines regardless of length. One party member has recurring issues finishing rhymes and it's lampshaded by another party member constantly, which might actually be the best part of the whole rhyming gimmick.

There's two major downsides to this game though:
1: It's an Ubisoft game so it comes bundled with uPlay. This is your own thing to deal with, unfortunately. It didn't bother me.
2: The DLC is straight cashgrab stuff. The Golem character's quest takes about two minutes and he is ultimately forgettable, but useful. The rest is complete cashgrab items that aren't even good - you can acquire them from the first few treasure chests to come across. To provide context: It takes dozens of lower gems to make the higher ones, in a 3 -> 1 ratio. Don't buy the DLCs unles you really want the other dresses for Aurora.... or the Heal skill unlocked for Aurora that comes from the Light Aurora pack. The healer you get in the game works perfectly fine though, and she's the first party member you meet.

Wonderful game and absolutely worth the price of admission.

I adore this game.
It's really beautiful and the music is soothing. I generally find it a very relaxing but rewarding game to play.
The battles can get a bit repetitive, but I didn't find it too much of an issue.

I'm pretty sure I had a dream about this game last night.

pros:
- amazing artwork (seriously)
- interesting plot
- fun turn based battles
- quests
- amazing soundtrack
- basically everything

cons:
- can feel slow or repetitive sometimes but everything else makes up for it

Clearly a game worthy of its price, reduction or not.

Pros :

- The game is surprisingly long. With that kind of game you would usually expect about 5 hours of lifetime. This one will take you approximately 15-20 hours to reach the end, unless you rush it like an idiot. If you like to complete games to 100%, you can add another 10 hours to that already long lifetime.

- The combat system is nice. It's strongly inspired from the one from Final Fantasy but with some extra mechanisms like the possibility to interrupt or be interupting during the casting time of an action, the possibility to slow down a specific opponent using your mouse, etc.

- The graphics are really sweet, colorful and yet sober.

- There are plenty of little things hidden here and there that will push you to explore every place in order to find them. These hidden things can be gemstones or various bonuses, poems or even new hidden characters that can join your group. This is something that we used to see a lot a decade ago in games like Zelda OoT and that we see less and less in nowadays videos games where exploration is not rewarding you.

Cons :

- Sometimes you have to solve enigmas by doing some specific actions to advance in the level. These enigmas are not bad, but they are very simple to solve and are rather redundant. Must of the time it's pushing/pulling a box to the right place or using your mouse to create a shadow on a wall and aim it at something.

- The gem combination system itself is nice, but the game doesn't provide enough information about it. You can hardly know what are the possible combinations unless you look them up on wikis or find them by luck.

- You're forced to install and use Uplay to play the game. I already have enough crap on my computer, I don't really like being forced to install another privacy invading game client that sucks extra RAM on my PC just to play a game. Steam is already enough.

It's amazing. I haven't encountered any issues with UPLAY either, so you have to get it, and it's well worth your money. Amazing story, amazing art style, interesting fight style, interesting character dynamics, really everything you could want.

While this is on sale, definitely snag this one if you've ever been into turn-based RPGs. It's an enchanting journey, albeit somewhat repetitive with combat. Still, the combat system is easy to learn but difficult to master, but above all, it's innovative. In this review I'm gonna talk strictly about how the combat system is fun, and bear in mind of course I played on the hard difficulty.

First of all, combat consists of 2 party members, and up to 3 enemies, and the flow of combat is both real-time and turn-based. There's a bar at the bottom that shows whose turn is coming up next, and towards the end of that bar is where they choose their action, and the speed changes accordingly. However, if someone is in that red zone and takes damage, their action is interrupted and they're knocked about halfway down the meter to act again (though they do get to reselect what they do).

Next thing is, the fairie that you control with your mouse. This little guy has a mana bar that regenerates slowly over time, or by using a potion, or by hovering over the blue plants and collecting the little mana bubbles they create. He has two functions: he can slowly heal a party member (even while paused), though this expends a lot of his mana. He can also, at a much lesser cost, slow down an enemy's active time bar heavily. That's where the tricky play comes in: timing your party member's action right after your enemy's so you can land an interrupt. That's pretty fun. That is, until you fight a boss that counters interrupts with something you really don't want, but that's another story.

Last thing to note is, even though you can only have two party members on the field at a time, you can, when one's turn is up, swap them out for another member, and they take their turn immediately (if said party member was up next). So, to compensate for this, as you go through the game and collect your party members, the game seems to swiftly ramp up in difficulty, forcing you to make tactical choices in your playstyle, your oculi (gems that change elemental damage, resistance, or otherwise improve your characters), and what skill tree to go down for each character.

All in all, this game's a blast for anyone who grew up with games like Pokemon or Final Fantasy. Most battles will feel like a triumph when you've won. There's nothing more satisfying than a boss fight where you win just by the skin of your teeth after having to use most of your consumables.

Beyond the combat, the game's presentation is enchanting. The OST is great, art style is enjoyable, all the dialog rhymes, everything's just plain fun. The ONLY demerits I can give this game are the repetitive combat and wonky difficulty spikes. But on the whole, I recommend it, especially at the price it's at now.

If videogames can be considered works of art, this one certainly fits the criteria. Gorgeous music, a beautiful world, and an Austrian folk-tale for a story. The game is, by all means, an excellent RPG as well. The story has decent and engaging progression, though at its core it is very simplistic. It has a very engaging combat system, and bosses which can actually be quite challenging (though i only played on the harder difficulty).

This is easily one of my favorite RPG's.

For one you are a dead underage princess all alone in a place of darkness. However, you get to fly, you meet weird people along the way that help you and you have superpowers. The game was beautifully designed, the artwork is exquisite. Sad thing it is short, I mean, I explored every inch of it and tryed to kill every single thing on the way and was able to finish it in 15 hours. I am starting it all over again. 9/10
