Cities: Skylines Celebrates One Year with Video Tribute!

STOCKHOLM – Mar. 10, 2016 — Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games that’s run an effective residential campaign, today announced that Cities: Skylines, the award-winning city-building game by Colossal Order, has now sold over two million copies worldwide. Released to critical acclaim one year ago on March 10, 2015, Cities: Skylines has rapidly built a community of over two million players across Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs, setting records at Paradox Interactive for the publisher’s fastest-selling title in company history. To celebrate the game’s one-year anniversary and outstanding success, Paradox will release a free content update for Cities: Skylines later this month, adding new features to the game for all current and future players.

See how the community has built up Cities: Skylines in this anniversary video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjyaaMHe09s&feature=youtu.be

“Our team is floored by the response players have had to Cities: Skylines and by the level of success the game has achieved in such a short time,” said Mariina Hallikainen, CEO of Colossal Order. “We knew that trying to create a city-building game with such a small team was an ambitious project, but we’d been working towards that goal ever since the first Cities in Motion title, and we knew, if given the chance, that we could make it happen. A year ago, we achieved that goal, and the results have been nothing short of incredible. We’ve got so much more in store for all two million of our players, and I want to thank each and every one of them.”

“The remarkable thing about our fans for Cities: Skylines isn’t just their number, but how active they are in keeping the game growing and changing,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “Giving the modding community the keys to our cities has resulted in so much passion and creativity. As of this month there are over 76,000 pieces of mod content on Steam Workshop for Cities: Skylines, from custom buildings to new road designs and beyond. Together with Colossal Order we intend to keep supporting this game and our players with more updates and content of our own for a long time.”

Later this month, Cities: Skylines will receive a free content update which will add new features and options for ambitious player-mayors. Players should be formally informed that they can perform mild terraforming on their cities’ formations, to reform former landforms into malformed formats. Canals and quays will also be available for construction, so that Paradox can officially say they have handed over the quays to the city.

In addition, Colossal Order will celebrate the game’s anniversary with a party in their own scenic city of Tampere, Finland, the proud home of Chirpy. One lucky player will be invited to join the festivities, winning a trip to Finland, a tour of the Colossal Order office, attendance to the anniversary party, and more. Fans can enter at http://colossalorder.fi/ChirpyContest/ by submitting their best Chirper-related art, poetry, song, game mod, or anything else they are inspired to create. Full details and rules of the contest are available at the above link.

About This Game

Cities: Skylines is a modern take on the classic city simulation. The game introduces new game play elements to realize the thrill and hardships of creating and maintaining a real city whilst expanding on some well-established tropes of the city building experience.

From the makers of the Cities in Motion franchise, the game boasts a fully realized transport system. It also includes the ability to mod the game to suit your play style as a fine counter balance to the layered and challenging simulation. You’re only limited by your imagination, so take control and reach for the sky!

Main features:

Multi-tiered and challenging simulation: Constructing your city from the ground up is easy to learn, but hard to master. Playing as the mayor of your city you’ll be faced with balancing essential requirements such as education, water electricity, police, fire fighting, healthcare and much more along with your citys real economy system. Citizens within your city react fluidly, with gravitas and with an air of authenticity to a multitude of game play scenarios.

Extensive local traffic simulation: Colossal Orders extensive experience developing the Cities in Motion series is fully utilized in a fully fleshed out and well-crafted

Districts and Policies: Be more than just an administrator from city hall. Designating parts of your city as a district results in the application of policies which results in you rising to the status of Mayor for your own city.

Utilize the Day and Night Cycle:
The city changes during the hours of the day and affects citizen schedules. Traffic is visibly slower at night and some zoned areas do not work with full efficiency. This expansion will put you in control of managing the different aspects of the day and night cycles.

Extensive modding support: Build or improve on existing maps and structures. You can then import them into the game, share them as well as download the creations of other city builders on the Steam workshop.

Overall: I am a big fan of building games and management city builders, so I did enjoy this quite abit, there isn't really any destruction like Sim cities, but you know you could always get sewage in the City water, and watch everything you created slowly die off, overall would buy again, quite abit to do in my opinion and not a bad buy.

Pros;
-Good Graphics
-Fun Goals
-Always have to keep an eye on things
-Great details
-Good money management
-Lots of different models
-Workshop support

Cons:
-Quite easy to beat
-No disasters
-Can lag sometimes even on a good rig

Verdict: Get it! It is worth its money!

the obvious comparison to this game is simcity (2013), so I'll shoot.

cities: skylines is in many ways what simcity should have been. it allows for meticulous detail, right down to the tree, and gives the player immense freedom (unless s/he dares contemplate constructing a steep slope) to build a pretty realistic city. the traffic makes sense, and it isn't an unbeatable behemoth. the modding community is fantastic and improves what relatively few areas of the game demand improvement. the game is light and doesn't require a high-end computer. perhaps most importantly, it offers more than one tile for you to build on. cities: skylines is simply a better game.

however, having played over a hundred hours of both, I still find myself wishing I could combine the two.

for all the depth and detail that cities offers, I feel it lacks character. it's great for the detail-oriented builder who wants a realistic city with few frills, but I, the easily-distracted dunce, often find myself wishing for simcity's... personality. I wish individual citizens would pop up and ask me to build things for them. I wish there were disasters and scandals. I wish I could watch the giant blobs of electricity bounce around my city. I wish I could monitor my supply chains and make sure my power plant has enough oil. I wish I could customize all the civic buildings and add flagpoles to my schools.

(I also think that simcity just... looks better? it's more vibrant. it feels more alive. although I guess that comes at the expense of system requirements so taxing that they require DRM and cities the size of a neighborhood and diluted simulation...)

so, while cities is very nuanced and allows for sprawling, detailed cities, I think it occasionally feels empty. it lacks simcity's personality and engagement. this is, of course, a matter of preference. I imagine this game's crowd would much prefer to build a city inch-by-inch, uninterrupted. I, on the other hand, yearn for simcity's more cartoony style and the interaction with citizens and the constant, tangible state of crisis -- y'know, to break up the roadbuilding and zonepainting a bit. but that's just me.

of course, I don't think any of us will go back to simcity any time soon. I'll just enjoy cities while also holding out for cities: skylines 2: ♥♥♥♥ gets real edition.

I had actually started to believe that we were never going to see another great city simulator and then Paradox sprung this on us. Cities: Skylines went back to the simulators that were fun, pulled the best parts of them, and upgraded them to today's standards. It's fun without being overly punishing but still provides a challenge for those of us who want it. Sure it isn't perfect, but there are few games that even scratch that lofty goal.

Probably the biggest issue is the lifespan of the citizens. All citizens lead a perfect and full life. This means if you have 2000 people move into your city all at once, they all die at the same time. It's really frustrating until you realize what's happening at the simulation. But there's a mod that changes that, giving citizens variable length lives.

But that's the only real problem with this game. There can be some other gripes made about performance of 100k+ cities and traffic management nightmares, but I've never met a modern simulator that doesn't have those issues. Simply put, if you want a city simulator that's worth the money, you can't go wrong with Cities: Skylines.

As of 7/12/16 and with 103 hours of playtime, I think I can make a solid review about this game. Long story short, I bought this because the new Sim City was trash, but I was not ready for this game to exceed my expectations.

Now for a short review: (SKIP TOWARDS "I'M TOO LAZY" IF YOU ARE TOO LAZY TO READ THE FULL REVIEW)

Cities: Skylines is a phenomenal city building game, perhaps even better than any of the Sim City games. It is a sandbox game that has an unlimited replay value and will devour hours of your days. Its laid-back graphic style, realistic audio effects, and relaxing music provide a calm and entertaining game time. The game unrestrically allows you to build at your own pace while providing a fun challenging experience.

While the game is a little tough on beginners (it has very few basic tutorials) it still seems easy to get a hang of. With time, and the Steam community guides, you will become a master of this game and having done so without much frustration, a simple learning curve.

Between all of the user created mods, bountiful amount of vanilla game content, and developers amazing DLC, you will undoubtedly enjoy every game session and you will never find the game repetitive.

I, without any hesitation, fully recommend Cities: Skylines to anyone interested in purchasing this. Even if you are new to the city building genre, you will appreciate every cent you paid for this game because of what it has to offer.

I'M TOO LAZY
Pros:
- Limitless replayability
- Abundant game content (including free mods and game DLC)
- Steam workshop support
- Challenging but fun

Cons:
- Larger cities can reduce framerates, even on beefy computers
- Difficult for new players (lacks necessary tutorials)
- No natural disasters or multiplayer (unlike Sim City)

I'm sure I will have missed some things (both good and bad) worth mentioning so feel free to comment on this review or ask questions in the discussions. The Cities: Skylines community is welcoming and we all help each other.

Also, if this review influenced you to buy the game, please comment. I would like to see how many people I helped.

Sincerely,
BOT Harvey

  • Developers: Colossal Order Ltd.
  • Publishers: Paradox Interactive
  • Initial release: March 2015
  • Genre: Simulation, City Builder
  • #Worth/NotWorth: #Worth
Exposition, Concurrence and Summation
Cities: Skylines is a city builder and economy simulator in the vain of the oh so fallen from grace SimCity.

Skylines is essentially a sandbox for you to plan out, build certain amenities and hopefully people will want to move in and make your city thrive.

Initially when you first jump into the game it starts with many of the options grayed out and it sort of gates you in this manner as you get used to the basics of building roads and zoning out areas as well as providing electricity, water and sewage treatment facilities. Then, as things unlock such as healthcare facilities and schools, you'll be able to get a better grasp of each system.

You'll have access to crime, fire safety reports. As well as noise and actual pollution overlays. Should you desire to “go green” the use of wind turbines are also available as well as a corresponding wind chart for peak efficiency.

The game makes use of a relatively humorous but sometimes annoying fake twitter for your citizens to @mention you and tell what your doing wrong and in rare cases what you are doing right. At least in my experience.

You can inact policies like water preservation or power conservation and even things like mandatory smoke alarms in homes. Typically, at the cost of increased upkeep while decreasing use of resources or in this specific case the likelihood of fire even though that's not technically what fire alarms do. This is how the game “gameifies” that sentiment.

Anecdotal experience warning
There are weather effects and a day/night cycle. Which led to a moment I don't often have in gaming that was slightly existential. For setup, I was early on in my learning the game and had not really understood how to get things going faster when the first night struck. Without power, without people living in my city, it was entirely pitch black; And I had this rather obvious realization the more I think about it but at the time was borderline transcendental though I'm not fond of the connotations of that word; I was sat there “We really are just floating on a rock out in space”. As though this was not already obvious to everyone. This just seemed like a very odd and probably the least likely of places or style of game for someone to have that thought process. Let alone in a game at all.
Anyways, back on point

The game also features mod and steam workshop support which leads to nearly endless types of buildings and other various ideas that modders can come up with.

There is also economy and budget screens to adjust taxes on different districts or different zones. As well as increase or decrease funding of maintenance on city utilities and services.

If I had anything bad to say about the game is that it is not always overtly clear how to do something. It requires a lot of tooling around and experimenting. In a very specific example setting up bus routes is rather ill contrived, at times down right purposely misleading in its functionality. Though a tutorial on proper usage can easily be sought out if need be outside the game.

It also features what I'd consider a fairly unique aesthetic. It does indeed have a film grain slider. Which when combined with the depth of field and lighting gives this almost physical model like appeal. Like it's a table in your basement with your model trains running along it. Zooming in, if you just look down a street it almost feels alive. I want to invoke the powers of Mr. Rodgers here but I fear the reference may be lost among the traffic.

THE GIST
Superb city builder that scratches the niche of well done and in-depth simulation that many games seem to miss.
