Journey of a Roach is a short but cute 3D Puzzle Adventure slash Point and Click game and a result of a colaboration between German P'n'C veterans Daedalic Entertainment and the relatively young studio Koboldgames from Switzerland.

STORY
You play as Jim, a cockroach living in an underground bomb shelter that is controlled by an army of ants. When your cockroach buddy accidentally crashes through the floor and gets captured by the ants, you set out on a quest to rescue him, end the ants' terror regime and find a way to get out of the bomb shelter and to a peaceful place somewhere else.

HUMOR
There aren't any actual dialogues in the game. All of the communication between the characters takes place in the form of incomprehensible sounds (sort of similar to baby mumbling) and comic bubbles with drawings that show what the characters try to say. Some of those illustrations are pretty hilarious and probably wouldn't be remotely as funny, as if the characters would actually say 'I found this plunger. Shall I put it on my head?'. It's not the kind of humor that makes you laugh out loud and spit your drink on the screen, but it's amusing and cheerful throughout the entire game.

VISUALS
While the game is advertised as a Point and Click game, it hasn't much to do with the usual pre-rendered, stiff and sometimes blurry enviroments known from other P'n'C games. It's actually best compared with The Walking Dead where pretty much everything is in 3D and where you can freely move around while still retaining the classical P'n'C feel of finding objects, combining them, solving puzzles and so on. Due to the comic style of the visuals, you don't have to worry about blurry textures or anything, either - it all looks sharp and just sooooo cute. :D

GAMEPLAY
Being a P'n'C adventure at its heart, the game adds some welcome addition to the fairly worn out genre as it basically plays like a sidescroller where you control Jim with WASD (or the arrow keys, respectively) and the actual item handling is done with your mouse (you can also use a gamepad, if you wish to do so - works great). To add to that (and since you're a cockroach, of course) you can also climb on walls and ceilings to progress through the levels, reach items or just avoid being seen by the ants.

It takes a bit getting used to and you sometimes accidentally climb a wall or a crate that you just wanted to pass, but overall the mechanic works great and gives you another way of freedom to explore your enviroment.

Puzzle-wise, the game is fairly easy as most puzzles only consist of picking up items, combining them and using them on something or someone, but since it's mostly quite obvious what has to be used how and where, they shouldn't provide that much of a challenge for experienced P'n'C or Puzzle game players. However, since the devs probably tried to also appeal to a younger audience, it wouldn't have been of much use to incorporate ultra-hard puzzles that you can't solve without consulting a walkthrough, so I'm generally fine with that.

PLAYTIME & REPLAYABILITY
Beating the story took me roughly 3 hours, which is rather short for a game like this, but personally I will always prefer shorter games with tight gameplay over games that artificially extend the playtime by repeating the same levels or gameplay elements over and over.

Once you've played through the game, there's not much else to do apart from hunting the remaining achievements, however, there's one particular achievement that requires you to beat the game in less than 18 minutes, so that adds at least a bit of challenge and replayability to the game.

CONCLUSION
Journey of a Roach is an extremely cute, cheerful and overall fun game for a relaxing evening, so if you like P'n'C games (especially with a gameplay twist) and don't get putt off by the game's length, make sure to check it out!

What is this game?

You are a cockroach on a post nuclear war world where there seems to be no humans and animals/insects have gained an enourmous size and inteligence. Your friend finds a flower and wants to show it to you, but then an accident accurs, he falls and you fall with him, you both get trapped and something happens and he falls through a hole, then you go on your journey to find him. An stright point an click adventure.

The Pros

The game have a really charming style, good controls and nice narrative with likable characters and lighthearted story with cool puzzles.

The Flaws

For once, the cutcenes seem like more of a storyboard than a cutscene, very sketchy and simple, the only other negative is that the game is very short and the admission price is a bit too high (maybe 5$ worht of content).

Conclusion:

There is very little wrong with this game beside the price, is a cute little story that you should experience if possble.

Score: 8/10 Good Game

This is a real eye-opener game. Unique design concept deep heart and it made a very good detail. Plot is entirely inferior to Hollywood blockbusters. Role model is very fine, making good interface. So what? You worth trying to play!

Nice artwork, decently challenging puzzles, decent story, not worth $15. I bought this for $2 and I would say it's not worth much more than that due to it's length. $15 for a game with less than 4 hours of content is not very worth the money, especially when there are so many great games out for that much. If the game price dropped to $5 I might consider changing my vote to recommend.

I'm a sucker for cute stuff, and by god are these roaches adorable. That alone made this game rocket quite quickly to my "top favorite games" list. The climbing-on-walls mechanic is really unique; I had no problems with motion sickness, although others have (so be wary of that, I suppose). The game was funny and happy, with a really sweethearted ending.

In short, a wonderfully adorable little game about roaches in a nulear wasteland.

Journey of a Roach is another adventure game that tries to re capture the fun of the classics but will you want to play this game ? In Journey of a Roach you play as a Roach. When youre friend comes back after finding a flower you need to travel to the surface to get the flower before it dies. So how is Journey of a Roach ? Its actually quite fun. Now for the Pros. Cute Art style. The game is present in 3D graphics but its also presented in 2D comic like strips. You control youre charecter freelly and you can walk around a huge enviroments. The game also has cute voice mumble. The game is alot of fun to play through and theres alot of secrets to find. Also the game has a great soundtrack and a great sense of humor. Now but there is some cons. The game is confusing to navigate. You can walk on walks which becomes tedious when you try to find youre way back to where you wanted to go. The game also has alot of illogical puzzles which might be hard to figure out. The game also has a few bugs. Like charecters disspearing and Sometimes the charecters double. Overall Journey of a Roach is a great adventure game which i suggest you pick up at a sale and not full priced because its kinda short. I give Journey of a Roach a 7/10

Journey of a Roach unfortunately is a very short game (can be beat in ~30 minutes). Some puzzles do not make any sense and there is no dialogue at all, the player has to make sense of things through thought bubbles of the characters.

I do not recall ever being this bored in my life. Waiting for an hour at the doctors office and staring at the ground and falling asleep is more fun. I absolutely could not get passed the first puzzle section with the flies. I finally figured it all out in which most of it made little sense and I just figured it out by finally exhausting every option which consists of running around and clicking things in your inventory onto other things until you find a match.

Adventure games are the worst category of games by far, boring to astronomical levels, especially this game.

This game made me want to throw up. That's all I have to say.

Actually I'll say a little more:
Daedalic Games is a pretty good company that makes point and click games. While most of them are a little too text heavy and tedious, they are over all great games that are bringing back the point and click gaming era .
Journey of a Roach however, is not a very good game. While the story line and game play are very innovative, actually playing the game is a different story.
Since you are a roach, you can't talk and can climb on walls. After playing only 30 mins, I can still tell you that both of those points are a big issue.
1. They use pictures instead of words as a guide.
This is a problem just because i got very confused, very often.
2. Climbing on walls.
This would have been a cool feature if only the camera didn't get in the way. (Oh, that dreaded camera! You always have to ruin games for me...) Since the game was way too linear, the camera turned everytime you walked on the wals or ceiling to keep the prospective the same, but all it did was make me want to barf. That is literally the only reason I stoped playing the game. Games should make you queasy. Period.

Journey of a Roach is the second Cockroach-themed game I've played in the last 3 weeks. What's happening to the games industry right now?

Journey of a Roach is a short adventure game (see it like a point n' click game, but with actual freedom of movement) set in a post apocalyptic world governed by radiation worshipping ants. Yeah, sounds believable!

The premise is very simple, but quite charming as well. Your one cockroach friend finds a flower in the middle of the barren wasteland the world has become. And he's quite enamored with it, and runs to tell you... But, unfortunately, he falls underground, and is later impriosed by the Ants.
And there your journey starts, finding your way into their base to rescue your friend, and finally see the beautiful flower.

The presentation of this game was very well done! It's certainly very light-hearted, and even... childish, but in a good way. The only voice-acting is gibberish (in a pretty frantic way, which was funny), and the characters' thoughts is told through pictures and some comic-book like cutscenes.

The cartoony art-style is nothing to write home about, but it fits the theme, and it looked good enough.

The music was also good in relation to the theme, and the overall vibe of the game, but it's nothing I'd listen to outside of it.
The sound design was pretty good, although I could see the voice acting being annoying for some people. I enjoyed it, even with gibberish, they managed to get the point across, and the tonality always fit the character's mood.

In this case, I'd say the whole is better than the sum of its parts! Nothing particularly spectacular, but it all works towards the same goal, and it ends up working out.

How's gameplay, then?
Well, you work your way down, solving a set of puzzles in each floor. You go around collecting items, and trying to combine them until something works. The solutions are usually pretty over the top, and they make sense only after the fact, which can be a bummer. On the other hand, each area is small enough that you won't be backtracking a lot to experiment with stuff, and everything can easily be solved without feeling too frustrating.

One aspect that I hate about point n' click games (which is pretty much the go-to genre for adventure games) is that movement is very limited, and lacks control, is sluggish, etc.
This game eliminates that, having you walking with WASD, which I found really good. It may seem a little thing, but it makes a significant difference to me.
The problem with the movement, is that, well... you're a cockroach, and so you can crawl on walls and the ceiling. Which results in the world constantly moving around, which gave me some serious motion sickness. And this was probably my main problem with the game, everytime I played it, I felt sick, and so I tried to get done with it as soon as possible (not bothering with completing it after finishing the main story).
So, if you have any problems with Motion Sickness in video games... probably pass this one up. Disregard if you think you're fine with it.

So. You go to the several rooms of each floor, and try to solve the characters' problems, in a step towards finding your friend.
The solutions are all pretty silly, usually leading to a chain of reactions that will be amusing, but certainly not very predictable (which is a minus in the puzzling, but again, it's not a major problem).
You'll try to dress up like a radiation-worshipping ant, you'll help a Spider with her baby flies, and you'll launch a nuclear rocket. What could go wrong in this game?!

It's a very simple game, and can easily be finished in 2-3 hours in your first playthrough. The story is amusing, it'll make you smile at times, and it's something good not to worry about. If you're interested, get this, enjoy it, and then be done with it.
There are also "secrets" to reward exploration, and some optional actions for achievement. I haven't bothered with it simply due to motion sickness, but it's good that's it's there!

I like Journey of a Roach for what it was. Nothing groundbreaking, but certainly a charming little adventure game.

P.S.: There was a sections in which they tried to give the game some sort of challenge (?), in which you had to walk through a vent, with blazing "fans" that would get you back to the beginning of the section. However, the perspective was a bit off, and it just felt pointless and out of place. You could easily just not see the fan correctly and get killed. But it was also very short, and once you passed a fan, you could deactivated, so it wasn't frustrating or anything, because of that decision, which was a good call.
But still, I have no idea why it was there, it wasn't very good, it was also very short, and overall out of place, with poor perspective.

It didn't affect my enjoyment of the game, but it was a design decision that I just didn't understand, so I'll leave it here.

Uwielbiam różne bundle! Ponieważ pośród średniaków, które się dostaje za tego przysłowiowego dolara od czasu do czasu trafia się na prawdziwą perełkę, o której wcześniej nikt nie słyszał. Taką właśnie perełką jest Journey of a Roach!
Myślałem, że to jakaś platformówka i zainstalowałem, aby pokazać córci bo a nuż się zainteresuje robaczkami. No i jakże – zainteresowała się – bardzo! I ja też, ba, nawet bardziej!

Jednak powrót ten będzie najeżony całą masą niespotykanych przygód i problemów do rozwiązania.

Originally I got this in a Humble Bundle, and I have to say I'm quite surprised. Pleasantly so.

This is a gem of a point-and-click adventure game that is neither too easy or too hard. There are some places where you may breeze by easily (and I love a good relaxing game like that), as well as others where you'll be stumped for a little bit. The length of stumped time depends on the individual. I've never personally been good at solving puzzles, so it might have taken me longer than it will you.

But that's okay! If you like point and click adventures, and a good dose of back-and-forth breeze versus challenge, you'll love this game! Add to it that that the sounds these adorable little creatures make will have you squealing if you've any sense of cuteness.

The gameplay itself offers some decent versatility, since you can either use WASD for movement, or just click around. Another fun feature is the thought bubble hints of sorts, though I won't go into more detail than that. The storyline is addictively sweet and genuine, with a lot of character.

It's not really a game I can personally pick up and play for the entire day in one stint, but it's definitely not a game I will easily put down after a few minutes (looking at some of the games in my library, especially point-and-click ones, ugh). I keep coming back because it's a very easy-going, wind-down and relax type of game. It's just amazingly well done throughout, and won't tax you for brain or reflex energy.

I hate insects, by the way. But after playing this game, it ALMOST makes me not want to kill another cockroach I see. That's how effectively adorable it is. The controls are well done in my book, the inventory is easy to use and not at all laggy or clunky, the achievements are fun to get (even the side ones that aren't necessarily part of the storyline), it has steam trading cards, it has character, it has personality.... What more could you want from a game?! And it's not greedily priced, so I'd definitely say it's worth your money.

Choose. A dinner out somewhere that will last you 30 minutes, or a game that will last you many hours? I think people fail to consider the way they'd spend their money otherwise when it comes to games.

Definitely recommend!
