For the Truly Adventurous - Play the Updates before they're Live

One of the great things about getting in on the FortressCraft Evolved's Early Access is your ability to access upcoming builds as they are in development. While these builds are not as stable as the ones pushed live for everyone, they allow you to get hands on and see the progress being made!

Below is just a small example of some of the updates that are in the Steampipe which will be pushed to the main branch in a later update. Click HERE for the full and evolving list of updates.

Available in Current MULTIPLAYER Steampipe Beta (V1.13c)

  • Complete item overhaul, especially WRT multiplayer
  • Fixed client-side power transfer not working
  • Survival entities now network synced (Server->Client ONLY)
  • Fixed performance collapse!
  • Further improved CPU usage when looking at blocks a long way away
  • Power Transfer now timestepped (Getting power from batteries at low framerate is not longer slow)
  • Improvements to MP Survival - ore smelters and extractors should now work
  • Ore Ping rendering rewritten (Will give you colourised Ore Pings TEMPORARILY)
  • Hypothermia rendering rewritten
  • Hyperthermia added.
  • Heat from torches tweaked; no longer an infinitely small source
  • Added Macerator to Research and Manufacturing systems.
  • Improved UI performance substantially.
  • Fix for crash in Creative servers
  • HotBar now lists '0' items, when you don't have any.
  • SpiderBot body no longer falls when all its feet are embedded! (doh)

To access the various Beta Branches such as the aforementioned MULTIPLAYER branch or the Linux and Mac Beta Test branches simply Right Click on FortressCraft Evolved in your game's Library list, Select Properties, then click on the BETAS tab in the window that pops up. Once on the BETAS tab you will see a dropdown menu that will let you select a Beta branch to access.

PLEASE NOTE:Builds on the Beta branch are not going to be as stable the official updates that have been pushed live. Also note that the PC is the leading platform so if you go in and test the Linux and Mac builds they will be behind the development of the PC. Beta branches are also constantly updating and are not fully tested. Access at your own risk.

When they say "infinite worlds" they really mean it! I decided to test this and built a structure going from the surface (Y:0) and built all the way up to 3,254... I could have kept going, but let's be honest, that would have been pointless. So then I decided to find the floor of the world, and dug down to 9,153... And I could have kept going. Minecraft's 256 block height limit is put to absolute shame, as this game shows its beefy and well-constructed voxel engine. I'll admit, I'm going to use Minecraft as my comparison here, because Minecraft is the definitive voxel game to compare to.

The game's view distance is comparable to that of Minecraft's 15 chunk view distance, which means you can see a lot. In Minecraft there's a survival situation which revolves around food. Currently in FortressCraft Evolved the survival situation revolves around body heat. You're in a constant struggle to keep yourself cool enough and warm enough at the same time. Standing in fire makes your body overheat, draining your power cells, and will kill you of heat exhaustion. Staying underground or out in the elements at night can cause you to begin to freeze, and you can die of hypothermia as well.

The game is looking good already in its pre-alpha state, and I absolutely can't wait for the full release. Normally I'd say "don't buy this early access unless you're ready to deal with bugs," but in this case, the sooner you get it, the less you'll end up paying in the end. So it's at your discretion, buy now and save, or buy later for peace of mind.

Some of the features work, some of them don't, but you'll still find plenty to do in this game. Better pack yourself a lunch, because you're going to be playing this for long hours.

I love this game I have played Minecraft for a long long time untill i got kinda borred of it, but i still like creative/building games. at first i though this was going to be a minecraft clone and yes it does get it's inspiration from minecraft obviously but it is much more. Setting up all the lasers conveir belts power generators mining drills etc etc to make a self sustaining base takes a long time to figure out which makes it besides being a building game also a puzzle game and with all the improvements you can build in your suit it also becomes kind of an rpg game. Sure it needs a lot of finetuning (a lot of the creative blocks are not even added to the survival yet) but it's a work in progress right now unfinished product i would give it a 7,5/10 but with the prommise it shows my guess for the final product would be 9/10 well worth the early buy get it now before it's finished and going to cost you a lot more than what it does now.

I'm embarrassed about how much time I have played with this game. For now, the critters are off and there are a few things that say this is BETA software. You need to dig deeper and discover new materials and ores to unlock the higher development tiers. The system supports enough automation that can rescue you from the grind once you get it going. The game allows for different types of game play and different styles to build. The developers are making blocks for the happy home makers, and some neat tools to use when you level up.

The beasts are not-hostile right now, but devs promise to flip a bit in the near future to enable their attacks. There's at least one i've seen that I'm not going to be able to take down with the tools I have. Better keep looking for the next ore to upgrade my kit.

The research and crafting area is small looking, but more items are revealed as you level up. Some items are really useful, and other not so much. Read the guides in the forums.

Multiplayer, creative and survival modes are being tested. With the beta software, you can stand up your own server and invite friends to play and create a functional base, manufacturing and storage facility.

Whatever your play style, the endgame won't be a sprint, so sit back and enjoy seeing where it goes.

--Update--

This was written during the Early Access - Which means the game is unfinished. So don't expect much out of it now.

I'd like to say this game is NOT a Minecraft rip off. Sure, you build, construct and dig, but not every voxel game is a Minecraft clone.

This is why I'd recommend this game.

--Pros---

The Economy system is pretty legit. Sure, it can get somewhat grindy when mining for various ores, but that's what keeps the game entertaining and not completing everything in an hour, or so.

The placement system is awesome, though a bit frustrating at times but I believe it needs some more work.

-^-^-^-Example; You place a Power Storage unit on the ceiling and want to transmit power from your other Power Storage unit to the one above, well then you would end up placing a block ontop of your bottom Power Storage unit, and then set the Laser Power Transmitter on the side of the block to make it transmit upwards.

When I made the first review, Survival Multiplayer wasn't functional, but they pushed an update out last weekend or so fixing that problem, so now you can enjoy it with your friends.

Automation system is pretty awesome! You can do some pretty crazy stuff with the machines which is pretty cool.

--Cons---

-Hitbox system can become very frustrating, annoying & glitchy.
-NPC's lack intellectual properties.
-In-game tutorial can be very confusing, frustrating and not very helpful due to poor English. (If anyone gets this game, I may provide a proper tutorial plan to put into your game folder for IG use or just use the forums/YouTube.)
-Limited things to do in Survival due to lack of item additions. (Not much of a variety... yet.)
-Main Menu can become stupid especially the Multiplayer window when the server is down, it'll bug out and you'll have to end task on the game as that's the only way to get it to go away.
-GUI could use a bit of work as it's sloppy as ♥♥♥♥.

The Cons & Pros may differ, but don't let the Cons push you away as they can be fixed.

I'll try to keep this updated.

this game is great!
it uses 64bit systems but can also run on lower end systems

I have yet to really jump into the game, as I'm one of the few people who bought it to play it in the Rift.

It seems the dev is working on making DK2 work with the game, but that it'll require an update from the current Oculus Rift SDK, as it is currently incompatible with the way Fortresscraft renders things.

All that technical jazz aside, I would say that I've personally observed a lot of very diehard fans of this game, so I'd say they would recommend it. I'll stick with their opinion until I can formulate my own through experience.

This is still too Early Access (even for me - someone who lives on the Early Access store page). Survival is basically nonexistant. No enemies, broken game mechanics (many many basic menu options are unclickable), and quite glitchy even for my taste. This game will probably be ok in the end - it sets itself apart from Minecraft by having VERY different goals and game mechanics.

The good:
1. Sets itself apart from Minecraft in countless ways
2. Multiplayer servers are free to set up
3. Game is cheap-ish

The Bad:
1. Game is too glitchy and surivival is basically unplayable in current state
2. Graphics are worse than Minecraft (but not by much)
3. You can click blocks no matter how far away you are (hard to believe in reality, but ok)
4. You don't take fall damage? This is weird

I'd wait, or buy it cheap now and put it on ice for about 12 months.

Disclaimer: I have not played the Creative Mode.

Even in Early Access this is an incredible game. You start off in the middle of no where freezing to death with only the energy in your suit and a couple of torches and ore extractors. You immediately have to set off to find your crashed ship to try to salvage whatever you can to just survive the first night on this planet. Once you're accustomed to surviving the night, you can start exploring all that FortressCraft has to offer. Building automated bases, suit upgrades, crafting, etc.

The UI still needs to be cleaned up and more intuitive, but the devs are working on core functionality of the game first so expect a bit of a learning curve (if you have any questions the devs and other community members are always available on the forums),

New updates and features are being released all the time, multiplayer was just recently released (there's still a lot more work to do with multiplayer, but at least it's under way). I highly recommend this game.

It's good so far, and it uses the Unity Engine, which means it's not a big corporate game, etc. A few things to note: This game is not complete, not by a long shot. I've already run into a LOT of bugs within my playtime already, below is a list of them.

-- The 64-Bit Version may crash upon Quitting the game to desktop.
-- Having more than one ore type in your inventory will confuse the smelter's "Feed Ores" button. (You cannot make a storage system without multiple ores.)
-- The A.R.T.H.U.R or whatever it is called, requires a Power Core to be crafted for it to work proper again. However, you do not know this recipe, even after researching the black box and power suit upgrades.
-- Right-Clicking items in your hot bar (using the mouse-enabled HUD) removes them from your inventory, forever. You cannot collect more of the item, you cannot see the item when using scroll wheel, etc. It's gone, forever.
-- Using your mining laser on coal ore (or any ore) constantly will seem to continue mining the ore incredibly faster than an ore extractor, this is not the case, the blocks that appear dropped are ghost ore item drops.
-- Game on "Fabulous" has issues with block animations, etc. The loading screen also freezes on that setting, even though the computer can handle said setting over 60 FPS (IE: Getting screen-tear since my computer can process faster even on Fabulous.) The setting can also lag computers that are far, far above the recommended requirements.
-- The spider mech enemy does nothing.
-- Your gun cannot hurt the spider mech enemy. (IE: The spider mech has no hitbox.)
-- Sometimes, during the day, the solar cell on the suit does not work.
-- Sometimes, even if you have enough power and research points, some research items will say they can't be researched.
-- The world select button on the Escape menu does nothing.
-- When creating a world with a custom name, the world's name reverts to "World" on game reload.

okay, so the game in itself is alright i guess. it's a very hard game to get going but that's what a survival game is, right? be wary of the online Beta though, tried it a few times but the server doesnt yet allow other players to build or pickup blocks in your world. this was the only reason i brought it and it's kinda dissapointing

nice game, however even though my computer easily surpassed the shown minimum specification, gameplay is choppy at best, and a fair bit of mouse lag. unfortunate as i only bought this because of the low specs, again nice idea, but i think ill stick to minecraft and just continue adding mods for free. kinda wished i hadent bought it no thinking about it. illustrated min spec needs to be changed and updated as there is no way those min specs are accurate. overall 4/10

This is a very engaging game. The similarities with Minecraft (Technic specifically) are passing. Building an effective power and resource distribution network against the pressures of a hostile environment in survival mode are really great. There are a lot of things to do now with so much promise and possibility for the future. I expect I'll have more sleepless nights up tinkering with this game for some time to come.

Written as of Alpha 1.11 (or 1.13c multiplayer, whichever you prefer). I have not played a lot, but from the meager 2 hours there are a lot of things that, unfortunately, made this a waste of money for now. The price tag would be justified if the game weren't the mess it is now. There are ofc a lot of pros to it but the amount of cons, and the form they take, is just a little too much. Also, as much as people would love to say it is a Minecraft clone, the similarities end at "block based building" and "mining". You could just as well place Space Engineers in the same category then.

Pros:

- Infinite worlds, a la Minecraft (better than the 256 block height it has anyways)
- Good potential for a crafting system, unlike any other Minecraft-ish game
- Research, blueprints, power system, different mining modes
- Much more realistic processing and production, with ore smelting, refining, and producing items and gear
- "Health" system with temperature, power levels and hypothermia

Cons:

- Buggy UI and menus, to the point it becomes very annoying
- Lack of a proper tutorial (there is one but it's messy and sometimes unclear)
- Buggy creative multiplayer with no proper netcode or player sync
- Extremely buggy survival multiplayer (lots of ore duping without even trying and more)
- Very odd color scheme and graphical design choices for blocks and machinery (more of a personal opinion, but ir sure seems off)

It's a good game, with a lot of potential, but it's a shame that the bugs and clunkiness of it made it very hard to play. I will definitely check back in a couple updates and hope it still was a good investment. For people who can cope with bugs and still enjoy a game, go ahead, but there are too many things either unfinished or (partially) broken right now. I still recommend it tho because of this future potential.

For a game thats "Work in Progress" its far more playable than most of these "Final Release" games and is very addictive. Just because the game is block based, and you build craft items, its not potions and crud, Minecraft this is NOT. Its machines and other wicked stuff. The Dev team are a cool and helpfull bunch, always in the forums (supprised they find time to code the game actually) to answer your questions and to comment on feedback.

Oh, Ignore the Thumbs down review's about the game beeing too complicated, It's not. Some people tend to forget this is "Work in Progress", so some of the ingame screens and menus are not complete or layed out too well with desctriptons missing, and can seem to be a little confusing, but its improving all the time.

10/10

After playing the game non stop for a few day i have to say this game is one of the best voxle games, its still being created at this time but so far ive came across no glitches myself. the game has some nice quick build tools that make creaing briliant structres alot easyer than other games of this type.

I'd definatly recomend this game. at such a low price its worth trying.
