1.18 now available!

As we move towards leaving Early Access, we've been changing the focus of the patches just a little; 1.18 is primarily concerned with a better experience for new players.

After languishing in the garage for many months, ARTHER has finally had a major set of upgrades in order to help you survive the rigours of FortressCraft.
His intelligence module has been replaced, allowing him to give you extensive context-sensitive help on progression and the state of your base.
If you're already an expert, then ARTHER has also received the his first two stations. The first is a recharging station, allowing ARTHER to directly charge off of your power grid; this allows you to get back to spelunking quicker than ever. If you're having issues defending your base, then the ARTHER Turret will allow you easily defend large areas against low-level mobs.

New for this patch are the first of the unusual mobs; HiveMinds now spawn in your world; these can then teleport in Mynocks onto your conveyor belts, which will start to steal your resources. Turrets have been added to counter this threat, but you're going to need a more explosive solution to deal with them permanently.

If you venture deep enough, you'll come across entire seas of lava - one of our next goals is to add in machines to deal with management of dangerous fluids.
If for some reason your PC isn't quite up to scratch, then under the in-game Settings menu, you'll find a whole host of ways to customise your visual experience;

Ensuring the game runs well on the widest variety of machines is very important to us, and there's been tons of optimisation work to boot!

New players have also gained a number of advantages - after some full runs of the game's progression, we've tweaked the costs of many of the early machines, so players should be seeing their first quarry within 20 hours (on easy mode!); the new MiniHopper and revamped Logistics Hoppers should aid this!

And all this topped off with a brand-new introsequence for fresh worlds!

This game has quite a few negative reviews and i have to say not all points are justified.

I really enjoy this game (i only play on survival) and it's a verry good spin on the many voxel block games out there first off it's not focused on being creative as in making big castles etc ( i guess you could but there are other games that are better at this) Where this game shines is in optimizing your base you're building a huge factory/mining operation and everything needs to be powered by different means which makes it a little of a puzzle game in my opinion.

people have commented on the fact that the tier 1 takes too long and it's too hard to get to tier 2. I have to say i love starting over and beginning from scratch I actually do so after every bigger update (even though it's usually not even necessary).

other people have commented that the development is too slow or non existent and although it may seem like this the last few months if those same people would follow the twitter they would see what the devs are really working on and at this point that is mobs and battle this is not a small task so the smaller quick updates may be gone for a while untill this is done.

I'm not saying this game is perfect yet (far from it ) but isn't that what the early acces warning is for.
Too many people ragg on the early acces games giving negative reviews for things that are bugged etc that comes with the territory. People pay money for something and expect it to be a fully functioning completed product even though there is a big blue warning saying EARLY ACCES. Guess what i just bought a house thats not even finished building yet and i'm not at the construction site with a big sign saying this company sucks my house doesn't have a roof and the toilet doesn't flush etc. same thing.

Right now I am 50/50 on my review. I have been playing the game with no mob AI and have actually been loving it. It's a nice change from playing Minecraft all day long.

What I enjoy most about the game, is the fact that you need machines to gather resources, mainly your ores, and that you can use conveyor belts to move all your materials around. I've worked a warehouse job where it was conveyor belt city almost, and one conveyor belt at this job, took 10 minutes to get the product from the machine to me, where I had to sort it with other packages. So the game in it's current state is pretty wild. So I recommend it based on how it's different from Minecraft, you can build and destroy blocks from almost any range, and how its got all this factory stuff. I believe there are mods for Minecraft for factory, but I enjoy playing this game as it offers a much different feeling and gives a different look.

Recent changes however will be approaching, and this is where I am undecided on a full recommendation. Changes will be coming that will give the mobs an AI, meaning they can drain power or screw with your machines functioning unless you plop down turrets. To begin, alot of items to build are very expensive, and that problem needs addressed. Another recent change to the game was how generators work. Before, you could use generators anywhere for power. Now, generators will only work so far underground, then you are forced to use lasers. My laser system is getting to be pretty crazy, trying to drag down as much power as I can, and it feels like a never ending battle to even be able to keep power running. There have been recent game code fixes to the lasers in how they operate. I personally dislike the lasers altogether, but I'm really trying to give them a chance.

The other problem that I have, is that, I would love to just be able to operate a factory, with no interruptions, but that isn't going to be added as a seperate option. A simple option to start a new game with no mobs, cannot or will not be included. A few people have asked for this, but all have been given a "no this is not an option" answer. The way indie games are made today, community input is helpful, and when that input is actually used in the game, that's even better, and I believe that indie developers should always keep an open mind about different things they can and cannot include. What I'm saying is, if the game Minecraft can have a no mob option, come on, it really shouldn't be that hard for you to include it as well. But I'm not saying that it needs to be included right away. I'm just saying, it is an option, and it shouldn't be ruled out so quickly. Once the game gets more closer to completion, then add in the option to turn off the mobs. Personally, I'm not looking forward to the mobs in the game, because I was hoping to just run a factory.

The more you cater to your players and fans of the game, the more they will see you in a better light. Then, mix it up a bit and change something that players wouldn't feel is too game breaking, or that on a forum, you have ideas and can go over those ideas with your playerbase. This happens already, but that transparency is what people want nowadays, and the developers have 100% transparency with their playerbase.

It's really just the no mob thing. Never entirely rule something out if it can be a possible option added in later on. I play Minecraft so much, that I'm getting tired of mobs. Which is why I have so much play time with this game. It's pretty much you building and running a factory, but then here come the mobs.

It's a good game, and if you like having to use machines to get things done, then you should get it.

It is still in its early stages so it will be going through many changes I'm sure.

In a nutshell review, Early July 2015:

Strong Recommend
Gameplay hours: at least 20+
Beta version updates happening weekly or better - very active
Devs active online and taking feedback, adjusting bleeding edge beta almost daily

For now, it is a mining game: you'll have the most fun if you enjoy building an industrial town/machine and gradually automate your mining operation.

Depending on how much you like to tinker, there is at least 20+ hours to get to current endgame (quarry), but that can easily extend as you learn to use the various components to achieve certain things you thought couldn't be done. A lot of the core fun is to figure out a way out of these challenges.

Work has just started on PVE, you might want to avoid the Bleeding edge version of the beta until you master the basics and stick to stable or standard beta until you know what you're doing as they are tweaking things and adding stuff continuously.

Game seems to have an OK framework, like minecraft with a few machinery mods, but here is where I have an issue I can't get past. Survival mode was the big draw to me for this game, they have turrets and whatnot to defend your base, problem is, none of the AI ever attack you, all the enemies just stand around in the world not doing anything, there is literally no challenge, survival isn't really different from creative except that you need to mine all your resources. Was expecting at the LEAST minecraft level competence in the AI. Would not recommend until survival mode is something functional.
