About the Game

At the very heart of Septerra lies the Core, a huge Biocomputer. Seven continents at different elevations, each with its own unique people and culture, orbit around the Core.
According to an ancient prophecy, Septerra's continents will one day converge and join in orbit together on one level - this is the Legacy of Marduk, the Creator's son. The Chosen, fanatical believers in the supremacy of their own wisdom and technology, impatiently try to force the issue - causing a global catastrophe which threatens the lives of all Septerreans.

Meanwhile, amongst the Junkers, a young woman named Maya gets caught up in the developing maelstrom and soon finds herself confronted by seemingly insurmountable problems. Without help she stands no chance of fulfilling the Prophesy before Septerra perishes. But whom can she trust in a world torn by war and treacherous intrigue - a world on the edge of the abyss?

Septerra Core is....a difficult game to recommend. I should preface this review by saying that it is MOST CERTAINLY not for everyone. Septerra Core is an older turn-based RPG from a time where these sorts of games were common on consoles but rather rare on PC. I played the game to completion back in that era, and found it rather enjoyable - however, even then it had its rough edges, and for modern sensibilities it will be rather archaic.

The combat engine is location-based, similar to how Chrono Trigger is. However, the speed/pace everything works at is exclusively suited to when you have 3 members in your party, so combat is QUITE clunky in the early portion of the game, which makes it a bit of a hurdle to overcome.

The cast is varied, and the story was decent for the time (from what I recall - details are fuzzy). The concept of the WORLD itself is rather imaginative, and wholly unique from what I've run into in gaming. Aside from that, level design as the game progresses becomes....extremely maze-like. Lots of wrapping corridors which look same-y and form literal mazes.

Effectively, I'm recommending this because I enjoyed this game when I played it. But anyone who purchases it should know what they're getting when they're going in - a game that was a little rough around the edges when it came out, and which probably won't appeal to most modern gamers. Only purchase if you really enjoy turn-based RPGs, or are interested in very imaginative sci-fi worlds.

Wonderful RPG. Spell effects and battle system are very cool, as well as enemy models, artwork, and the whole concept and epic focus of the game. A walkthrough might be necessary to not get frustrated trying to figure out when and where to pick up certain items, and what to do with them, but besides that i had an amazing experience with this game. Great dialogue and cutscenes too!

Great game. Awesome story, and fun to boot. Sadly steam edition doesn't work to well on win7 without some unofficial patching.

The game was lost for me when my good old computer crashed. I wished to find it and play it for about 10 years and here it is.
Would totally recommend it because (for me, at least) the world structure is amazing, the plot is quite interesting, and it's old (depends on your age of course but obviously not new). I just like old games, so, what can I say. Go and play it.

It's an old school RPG with turn-based party combat. Interesting story & setting but the ending screams for a sequel that we won't see. It has problems with modern OS (Windows 7/8) but it can be easily fixed. Combat gets tedious, Dungeon design is just "get the key/ flip the switch and open the gate" and backtracking to it sucks. But once you get past the cons...it's a good game in its time of release.
