About This Game

KNIGHTS and MERCHANTS recreates the era of the Middle Ages. Apart from the purely fictitious geography of our world, all game elements and scenes are based on the Anglo-Saxon period, 1200 A.D. And we haven't used imaginary elements like fabled creatures, either. The player takes on the role of an ordinary captain in the Palace Guard. A conspiracy against the king catapults the captain into a situation where he finds himself responsible for the defence of the last royal province. This is all that remains of the shattered kingdom, which has been split into numerous small principalities and fiefdoms. And now even the king himself, ensconced in his capital, is threatened by enemy armies. This is the starting point of your Middle Ages adventure. Now you must win back all those provinces which once belonged to your king.

THE SHATTERED KINGDOM:

After many battles, a former kingdom has been divided into many small principalities and earldoms. The kingís troops were pushed back into one last royal province, and the rulers of the other provinces waged terrible, destructive wars against one another. The whole land fell into a state of chaos and now the former royal capital itself is under
siege by the armies of the rebel lords. You belong to the last remaining group of loyal kingís men, and have been commanded to go to the king in view of the imminent
attack.

THE PEASANTS REBELLION:

Build a prosperous settlement with a complete economy. Arm your troops and meet the enemy on the battle field! Master these tasks and the King’s subjects will be able to live in peace and freedom again.

GAME FEATURES:

  • Middle ages simulation and Real-time strategy
  • 2 campaigns "The Shattered Kingdom" and "The Peasants Rebellion" with a total of 34 missions

Crashes frequently on mac, game is not optimized for current mac/windows. Not running completely smoothly, these are things that are essential to any game and definitely needs fixing

Game is very nice BUT....
Don't buy this game for HD version, it is a joke, i can't believe that enyone took money for it.
If you can buy it cheeper somewhere else, do it and download KAM REMAKE, which is true HD version, worth paying for(it's FREE).

The game is briliant, I bought this for the HD version, although I already had it. Unforunately the HD version is so bad, I can hardly believe it. The people who done it are terrible. The Hold Click for army commanding doesn't work properly so it is a little hard to place armies in proper formations, the thing that made this game so interesting. The pathfinding is terrible, and very buggy. And it only has the original campain done, not the expansion. The gold edition fixed many of the pathfinding problems in this game, but here, those are still there. And another thing is that you get acces instant to all buildings. Really disappointed.

In my childhood, I couldn't get past level 5 of the campaign.
Today, I finally passed it.
Now I'll wait another 12 years. Maybe then I'll be able to pass level 6.

11/10 would get screwed by bad micromanagement again.

Back in the day, strategy games were really hardcore! The villagers didn't take orders from you and you had to feed your troops or they would starve! And if you wanted to recruit one soldier you had to forge his sword and armour first and then you could have one! And then you would have to constantly feed him or else he would die of famine!
Ow those were the good ol' medieval days!

After hours of micromanagement watch your entire army perish from starvation cause you forgot to attach your bakery to a road! Priceless!
10/10 would starve my armies again

Before Age Of Empires... There was K&M.
Knights and Merchants forces you to use tactics and strategy employed the right way the first time around.
Resource gathering is also a high priority and will reserve many hours.

Its a great game, even today and uses a number of features that haven't been used in any other games since.
For me this game is a 10/10 based on that it is such an iconic game and one of my first!

There was no steam when we (as father and son) started to play this game but there were long, sleepless AWESOME nights which we stayed up all night and have arguments with my dad... IT IS A EPIC MEMORY FOR MY CHILDHOOD. This the perfect game for those who are patient and you need to calculate every move of your kingdom in order to prosper. JUST EPIC...

Go ahead and buy it and thx me later...

A true classic of RTS games kingdom building and the place were many PC strategist were born. The game has some unique elements and the management of your kingdom is quite interesting. The battles while they are not going ot get your brain fried they still require you to take advantage of the terrain and know counters. Overall it`s a great game to have if you are a fan of RTS games since for many this was the first brick on that wall we call gaming.

6.6/10 - A steal for the price

This game has aged but it still is really fun. If you still play older games you will really enjoy this title. There is alot to this game and took me some time to get better, but once you get the hang of it. Fun.

Games on sale usually for less than $1. Totally worth it!

I have been playing this game since it came out, forgot about it for a while, then discovered it again on Steam. Had to have it and still surprised about the great game mechanics and timelessness!

One of the most frustrating and difficult games i've never grew tired of when I was younger. Still quite a challenge in todays game world.

Just get it!

Ps: Would be nice have the workshop for this game. So we can tweak textures, etc.

This is one of those games that you probably got with a bundle or some promo and out of nostalgia for the 90s and the steam cards you give it a go around 8 when you are back home and suddenly it's 4 o'clock in the morning…

It have it's share of problems and it may feel stupid for today standards (imagine that you need to turn the archers yourself to face the enemy so they can start attacking…) but I found it very challenging to try to win.
At first I was very frustrated but then I tried to understand how it plays and I liked it.

I loved that you really need to do resources management and you need for example to pick wood, make planks, then shields, then axes and finally a soldier and you don't just have a super simplified system like in other games that you need just 1 or 2 resources to do this. More advanced units need even more resources.

I also loved that you need in fact to feed your people or they will just die! Really this game is complex even for today's standards and while the graphics are absolutely outdated from a point on you just don't care, because you enjoy the game. The HD version helped giving you more zoomed out view that look better in a 1080p monitor.

It is not for everyone but if you like micromanagement and you are willing to “forget” modern gameplay and retrofit yourself to how the games used to play, you will enjoy it.

who wins in a fight: knights, who are covered in armor and swords, or merchants, who are covered in fat and gold? this game answers the question by shouting "it's knights, you fool. their swords are huge, and their armor impenetrable by thrown pieces of gold. you spent money on me, so i am answering your terrifyingly stupid question with my blast-processed graphics and surround sounds"

Unfortunately this game runs very poorly on modern systems and suffers stability issues.

It's aged badly - there are other retro/ancient RTS games that have aged much better and run without hitches on contemporary systems.

Avoid this one.

I bought this game for my father since he used to play back in the days.
He worked as a baker before he got unimployed. All he did was play Knights and Merchants.
Now he is unimployed and whenever I see him, he is still playing this...
I've tried making him play many other games, yet he always comes back to this... On the same day.
It has been many months since then, and he still plays it.
Nothing but Knights and Merchants.
He doesn't seem to know how to save a game. He always restarts and enjoys it alot.
I told him to play this on offline mode though, otherwise I can't play my games on steam.
However, it is not exaggerated if I say he played atleast 1000 hours. If not more.

My father is 55. Only plays Knights and Merchants.
