I am definitely a fan of this 3D asset creation software. It is like a more powerful version of Sculptris that can actually handle editing models made elsewhere as well.

This is something (along with a seemingly natural companion of Silo 2) that really helped save my interest in learning to create and work with 3D models. Many other suites are insanely overwhelming to get started with, such as the admirable but frustrating for many Blender. Curvy is fast, you can start creating and manipulating shapes immediately without even studying up, even for a total first time user.

As I've progressed, learned about the pipelines and purchased far more expensive programs - I find myself still using Curvy. It really is great for fast organic shaped model creation. The ability to sketch a 2D shape and have it pop into 3D is fairly handy. Surprisingly I also find myself using it as a sculpting tool for models I've created elsewhere as well. Sure it is not Zbrush or Mudbox or even 3D Coat, but for my purposes as an indie game dev (working within the constraints of multiple platforms) those programs are total overkill anyway. The power they provide (I do own 3D Coat) requires too much time investment to make it worth it to me and even if utilized, would be fairly wasted somewhere like Unity where a single mesh is limited to 65k polys (unless you are ok with it being chopped into parts like perhaps a static prop).

The one thing I really wish Curvy could do is import and edit 3D models in FBX file format. This would allow me to work on models that have already been rigged (for this I must use 3D Coat). However I find Curvy worth using in the early prototype stages of all my models even still.

There are some tricks to learn, such as the fact that importing an OBJ will collapse all of the 'subparts' into a single mesh listed in the scene... however this can be easily 'exploded' into all the parts it was built with in some other program through a menu option.

All in all I think this software would be good for anyone looking to enter the 3D creation world, and probably a very fun quick prototyping tool for anyone that is already familiar with 3D assets.

PS - It seems like all the negative reviews are from people misusing this software - trying to use the sketching like it is CAD or trying to create hardedge extrusion styled models. As long as you understand what Curvy is and need the functionality, I think you'll be happy.

This program has a lot of potential, but altogether I can't suggest it. Especially not for the absurd original price of $99.99. I was fortunate to get this program for free from a friend, and I feel bad for him having spent $25 on this, in my opinion this program falls short of even delivering what someone would expect from a $25 pricetag.

Here's what I think is wrong with this program.
1) It's big deal is that it has sculping capabilities. However, there is a free program out there named Sculptris that does this function 100 times better, is easier to learn, works faster, and is overall less of a headache.
2) This program has very basic CAD features (if you could call it that). I tried making some very basic models in this such as an early-era tank, you can't ask for something more blocky or basic than that. With a software of this asking price, you should EXPECT an experienced 3d sculptor to produce a convincing 3d tank in short order... however this program was so backwards that even the CAD in it isn't worth your time.

So who would want this software?
If you're a professional, or trying to produce professional work, I don't advise this software unless you have a lot of time on your hands to get really good with it. The program itself isn't very intuitive compared to other ones I've seen. And for the pricetag, this program seems like a joke when there's so many free programs out there that you can pick up, and out-perform this one. If you really want to get some sculpting software, save yourself a lot of money and just pick up Sculptris. If you want to blend CAD and sculpting, you can import models (in .obj format) into Sculptris and work on them from there.
I can't advise this to hobbyists because as I've said a number of times, there's free softwares out there now for this sort of thing, and honestly this program seems to have a lot less love or thought put into it, making you have to work harder to produce the same thing you could elsewhere... I can't imagine who'd want to spend $100 on software when there's a free alternative that works better.
So my final verdict of who would want this software is merely someone who's okay with spending $100 for an advanced sculpting toy and don't mind taking your time to play around, then this might be a bit of fun. It's true you can produce some great things with this software, but you're going to have to spend a lot of time learning it.

I got this last year for free on a Bidding event on steam. It was really useful for getting my assets into blender and refining them into Maya LT using Maya Stingray then putting them into Unity to make a very short game. So useful. The sculpting helps me smoothing models more. I would rrecommend this as an alternative to Zbrush. User interface is confusing but there are good tutorials on Youtube.

This is possibly the MOST BASIC 3d cad program ive used. a weak set of sculpting tools, axes and plains that MAKE NO SENSE. AND ALL MODELS ARE EXTREMELY HIGH IN POLYGONS WITH NO ABILITY TO REDUCE THEM. i export to maya and reduce polygons but beyond 20% the mesh is distorted beyond recognition. NO REDO FUNCTION, you have 10 steps back and accidentaly do 11, WELL YOU HAVE TO REPEAT THAT 11th step. Considering both sculptris and blender ARE FREE im glad i only paid 25% of the retail price because im am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO unhappy with this product. I have also come to the conclusion, if you cant follow tut's to get efficient in blender......you have no place in the 3d world. Derp.

There are Geeks who will spend the whole day ticking away at numbers in order to get a boxy, nerdy version of what they had envisioned...and then there are artists; who work and create better when 3D modeling is more like a clump of clay in their hands that can be easily shaped. This is the difference between Aartform Curvy and most of the big names in 3D modeling and animation. Aartform Curvy puts the fun into modeling,,,I HIGHLY recommend this program whether you are a seasoned professional or a beginner; Aarform Curvy is easy to use and creates beautiful, complex biomorphic shapes that are more like brush strokes than a series of numbers ticked in on a keyboard.
Curvy is a wonderful extra tool to have in your toolbox
5 THUMBS UP simply for making modeling simple and quick, intuitive and enjoyable for the first time...
P.S. You can always import these models into other programs and get all "tweeky" on them if you have to satisfy the Geek that exists in most of us...

i think this is a good for modeling but you will need to give your self time to learn all the tricks and most new designers fail at that. (i did and most of my friends that have this softwere) now after some time i have started to use this again and if you go over some tutorials and videos then this turns into an awesome tool to help you with what ever you are working on

Reasons to like Curvy:
1- Can I run it? Yep... Curvy runs on nearly anything, doesn't even need a separate graphics card. Desktop, Laptop, Windows Pro Tablet... it doesn't matter (This benefit probably requires the UI to be barebones.)
2- What are licensing restrictions? None. Short of trying to sell Curvy's code, UI, or pictures associated with it... the License is quite friendly. If you can make money commercially with Curvy, then do it. There's no cap limitations.
3- It has a Wine option for Linux users
4- It has increasing and decreasing geometry tools in fractions.
5- It is the only 3D program that is ready for 3d work in 4 seconds on my laptop

Reasons not to like Curvy:
1- You don't own a tablet
2- You can't draw well enough that other people know what you are drawing
3- You wouldn't watch videos on how to use this software unless it would keep a zombie apocalypse at bay.
4- You don't like drawing living things

* a 64 bit version is now included, so the million count issues should be a thing of the past.

So, I've been using this software on-and-off again for about two weeks now. It's a fantastic tool for doing curvy objects -- think humans, vases, crab-alients, tribbles, squirrels, etc. It is NOT really a tool you would expect to use if you were carving, say, a house or other strict geometric objects because the port to .OBJ leaves you too many extra vertices to clean up.

Of course, if your video game takes place in a Dr. Seuss world, maybe that is the house for you.

When it comes to quick, rounded objects and characters, this software compares favorable to it's competition (in my opinion) as it allows you to easily rock between low and high poly, do intrecate detailing, add textures, add bones, and then port to .OBJ (and only .OBJ I might add).

It serves a singular purpose, so it's not as broad as it's competitors. But then again, it's not as expensive. And when it comes to putting out quality meshes, the tools in this program are up to the task.

After having a few run ins with Technology recently I was very disappointing when I brought this program for no reason it would not launch. Due to the nature of the program there wasn't much help from other users out there, however after posting on the Steam Forum the Developer gave me some help. Unfortunately the program still failed to launch after which the developer sent me vie e-mail a none Steam version and it worlds great. All this withing 24 hours of purchase. If other companies had customer service this quick and friendly the industry would be a better place!

A brilliant peace of software and must have for CG hobbyists!
Curvy's strongest point is it's drawing feature which has a semi-steep learning curve (get it? 'curve' ?). It's not so much instructions that needs to be studied, over and over, but management of the curve and drawing tools takes a while to 'stick.'

Once you get the hang of it, however, it's a lot of fun to play around in and even more so if you own a graphics tablet.
Obviously far more developed than the free Sculptris or MeshMixer; I've been playing in this app for about four years now and still learning something new each day.

When I have to whip up an illustration quick and don't have time to waste in box modelers - I turn here first.

There are some current fallbacks however but hopefully Simon will update those soon.

1. Bump doesn't work if using an older AMD video card.

2. The GUI and viewports are not near as customizable as I would like them to be nor will Curvy remember what you do mange to customize. (however standard four port is still included)

3. When using the Curvy map there seems to be no way to apply it to only parts of the model there for any imported textures apply to the whole model. I believe this can be circumvented even using the free version of Project Dogwaffle
Which Simon has implemented a link to in the Curvy menus.

Ultimately, however, this is by far my favorite 3D tool when it comes to 3D software outside of standard poly/vertix/edge manipulation.

I am just starting to learn, so will ammend this review later. I just bought this though, mainly because on the forums when I was asking questions about this program and curious as to whether it would be a good buy, the developer immediately responded to me concerning my interests. He continued to communicate when I had more questions. So i bought this immediately, knowing that the developers are actually invested in their product -- unlike some things on Steam *ahem* Godmode *ahem*...

Between the website and the program itself, you are offered all the info you'll need to start learning how to sculpt/model, or so it seems. I'm a complete noob and excited to learn.

The good.
Curvy 3D introduces another way to sculpt, creating basic shapes, mergin and detailing then with a advanced autosubdivision making a more intuitive and fastest workflow, getting the same results in less time than his big and expensive brothers.

The bad or not.
The bad point is the lack of tutorials, the first day with it may be really frustrating for experienced artists by the different workflow...
After all take in mind it is a sculpt tool, Curvy 3D is really weak for texture painting.
