“Steam Marines is a dark and compelling game, which will force you to learn to play the hard way and make you deeply regret every mistake you make.”
8/10 – The Indie Hut

“There are a lot of tactics. It's such a brutal game and it makes it even more brutal that you didn't realize how brutal it is when you start. Then you realize you died because you made one, literally one, wrong move.”
N/A – Indie Games AAA

“Players must control their Steam Marines and try to get as far as possible through the ship’s elaborate, procedurally-generated levels. When I say “try”, I really do mean it.”

Informazioni sul gioco

Steam Marines is a squad based Roguelike set on a steampunk spaceship. It features tactical play focused on positioning and careful use of resources. Built to keep you on your toes as you progress through the decks of your besieged ship while clearing enemies and trying to reach each level's elevator.

Permadeath
Build your marines up into long range or up close death machines, but don't expect any mercy. Death is permanent and fallen marines are gone forever. Finding survivors not guaranteed.

Turn and Squad Based Gameplay
Command up to four marines, each with their own gear, talents, and Action Points. Positioning is critical - even a lone enemy can be lethal! Sight and snipe or funnel enemies into a choke point and blow them up!
  • Five marine classes - long range death, shotgun knockback, grenade launchers, all to help the squad
  • Four ranks for promotion and talent tree access
  • Five perks to further differentiate each marine
  • Exoskeleton suits stripped from the hulks of dead enemies - flamethrowers and face punching
  • Deck bosses that will challenge you but do not negate the tactics you have learned (no "immunities"!)

Procedural Generation
The steampunk spaceship is composed of multiple decks you must progress through. Different environments and creatures await, and you'll never know for sure what lies beyond the next corner.
  • Five human ship decks with a sixth Alien Deck
  • Procedural decks with destructible walls, high/low ground, and tactical variations
  • Randomized weapons, armor, and enemy units

Score, Difficulty, and New Game Plus
Get rated on your overall performance. Manage to fight your way past 30 levels of mayhem? New Game Plus offers fresh challenges. Four levels of difficulty with one being for the truly masochistic!

I'm not entirely sure whether I should recommend this game or not, as I have rather mixed feelings about it.

GOOD
-It has lots of variety, such as...
-classes with different skills,
-nice punch of different items, both interesting and useful,
-good range of enemies (considering the length), and so on.
-It has funny odd things, like a collectable painting that can be used for random effect.
-It's not too short.
-You can set "facing" (turning a character in place) to cost no Action Points from game settings. I was able to overcome some of the bugginess with this.
-Difficulty: As you learn how things work and how you kill different enemies, things get easier so that you actually survive. Meaning, that you propably wont be playing the game through with first attempt, thus providing some challenge.

BAD
-It has terrible graphics: sometimes I'm not sure what I'm looking at, while occasionally I have difficulties with reading the text. Sometimes its very hard to say whether a piece of wall is bashed or if it's semi-destroyed. In some maps, the wall tiles are so dark that I have to look the screen from different angle (benefits of flat screen) to be able to actually differ them from background or unexplored tiles. Some enemies can't be recognized from each others, until they blow on your face.
-Moving around often bugs like hell: unit graphic may stay behind from actual position during moving, sometimes the whole movement is ignored. I have had two marines standing in a same tile more than once. Luckily this mainly plagues PCs, it could easily make the game unplayable if this would affect NPCs as well.
-Shop pricing skyrockets like stockmarket-bubble.
-Item prices increases every time you enter a shop.
-Shop offers four items, chosen randomly. Combined with above, trying to buy a med-kit can become very, very expensive.
-You can't sell items.
-Using mouse over the battlefield is buggy, and supposed benefits are often broken. Not to forget that sometimes moving the mouse on the map area causes heavy lagging and shooting CPU-load to roof.
-Occasionally "targeting indicator" does not appear as supposed to, you have to rotate the character or switch between characters for it to show.
-Game is balanced in a wrong way: You must make sure that you wont be shot at all, because enemies will tear apart your marines too easily, even on easy-difficulty. This means that you must use lure-tactics constantly, and even a single mistake may result to complete failure.

I like roguelikes, I love space hulk, and I'm often seen at steampunk events, so I honestly thought this game would be made for me.

It's not. I played it for a few hours waiting to see if it gets better, but I couldn't find myself being engaged at all. The character progression feels lack-luster, the roguelike elements feel constrained, and the art didn't catch my eye.

Sorry, Steam Marines, I think your concept is good, but the gameplay isn't there for me.

I like this game.
WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW.

Pros:
1. Your first four soldiers are the ones you can customize their class and perk. This makes it so you want to keep these soldiers alive because you know what they have at the start. Any other survivors are randomized, which makes you have to change your strategy.
2. The combat is good.
3. Permadeath is used well.
4. You can launch bosses into orbit, killing them instantly.
5. Bosses have no true immunities.

Neutrals:
1. Every class has a perk for them.
2. You cannot customize the starting weapon of your first four soldiers.

Cons:
1. You cannot rename your soldiers that aren't the first four.
2. No persona beyond your first four soldiers.
3. In every class promotion, the right skill is better than the left.

The good

The game is pretty nice and hard. Just what I expected :D
+ Pixels graphic
+ Nice music (might need a couple more tracks)
+ Game style that really shoves your mistakes into.... You get it.
+ Learning by Dying
+ VERY Tactical. But pretty fair most of the time (spawned enemies have 1-turn pause, movements of enemies/sounds show where might be many of them)

The bad

Gameplay:
- Gets somewhat repetitive, even after just 8 hours (not that bad, but still I guess I would not take the time to finish all difficulty levels like this)
- Barely any item description and kinda hard to make out which item it is you're about to use (I still don't know yet what a hacked PDA+Multipass is for)

The reason I cannot recommend it

BUGS. But not the ones you can shoot, unfortunately :/

- Sound vanishes reproducably every boss encounter (restart after you defeat him helps)
- Sometimes I have to click on a power several times until It works/I can use it
- Sometimes enemies don't show the action points for 1-2 rounds anymore. Great for bosses...
- Sometimes I cannot level up marines right away, but only in the next round
- XoX - Every 3rd-4th time, when using an hour glass or stim, I cannot use the AP for attacking anymore (moving still works at least). Tactics? Bad luck.
- XoX - Sometimes I run "into" an enemy instead of making a melee attack -> Marine gets stuck "in" the enemy. Now you can't shot/hurt it with other marines, nor can the stuck marine get out until he killed the monster with (now working only for him) melee attacks. Which, in most cases, ends up in the marine dying.

Especially the last two ones are really game breakers, as the game is hellish hard at times and, surprise, its perma death.

I know this is a game where you die a lot - but if I die due to a technical bug and not my stupidity, that really kills all fun for me (and, come on, this game is not a code-complexity monster!).
Which is why I cannot recomment it as it is.

TLDR; Skip this game, buy Bionic Dues instead. Bionic costs half as much as this, and is actually a finished product.

Steam Marines is a great concept that never got finished. Many of the poor gameplay elements, admitted to by the Dev, were supposed to be changed before launch. They were not. Dev swore all over the place that he was going to maintain the game post-release, and not abandon it the day it came out. That's exactly what he did, leaving TONS of game-breaking bugs and glitches. There is no music, there is no variety, the tutorial in no way prepares you for the amount of missing information you'll find in the game.

It's sad, because this really could have been a great game. It is not. It's a twenty dollar turd that you should avoid at all costs. Dev skipped supporting this game to start working on a sequel instead, but that's a dangerous road. How many people are going to buy another game from someone who just got bored with his first one and left it to rot?

You can still see the 'road map' on the discussions page. After playing the game for a while, then reading the road map, you realize that a vast amount of the features the dev decided to leave out are exactly the ones that needed to be implemented to make this a great title. I have no idea what he was thinking, because he was well on his way to making one of the best games to come out of Greenlight/Early Access.
