Gentlemen! Update

Hi everyone,

I'm the Marketing Manager here at Blazing Griffin - we've just acquired Gentlemen! and The Nightmare Cooperative from Lucky Frame Ltd and I just wanted to drop by and give you all an update on what's going on.

For those not familiar with Blazing Griffin, we're an indie studio based in Edinburgh. Our other titles include:

The Ship

Distant Star: Revenant Fleet (Early Access)

As we move into 2015, we will be planning out what we're doing with each of our titles and having read through the reviews for Gentlemen!, looking at a online multiplayer option is high on the agenda for that.

Right now we're forming plans and working out what's possible, so if you'd like to provide any feedback for that process, then leave a comment here or on the forums.

You can read the announcement for this acquisition here and there's a couple of links on that page with more information.

“...skilfully combines the arcade immediacy of Super Crate Box with the weaponised chaos of Super Smash Bros, and VVVVVV’s instant gravity-switching...”

“When playing Gentlemen!, we couldn’t let the competitive spirit slip and we’re laughing ourselves giddy as complete chaos ensued on the screen. There were even funnier times when we were both tussling on either side of a single platform and trying to get the slip on each other. It’s just very fast and competitive fun that you should definitely try out...”

I bought this game because I had it on iOS. I have not seen any explanation for negative reviews, so I will put in my own input:

PROS:

Controller Support
Local Multiplayer
Unique Fighting Style

Cons:

Black Border around Map
Ambiguous Quit Option

Overall, just like the iOS one, I think this is a great game. It is witty, fast paced, and allows for up to 4 players for an all out brawl. Unfortunately, it is distracting how levels are surrounded by a large black border, but I am testing this on a 3:2 ratio screen so it may vary on a 16:9 screen, in whcih case I will update the review if it turns out to be different. I do think that automatic scaling of levels would be in order though, and level editors would be nice too.

As there are very few games with local coop, and even fewer with controller support, this stands out as a great option for those Steam-Machine Users, but it also supports 4 players on a single keyboard, albeit it is a little strange.

This gives you a Smash Bros feel but in a rather different manner, You may find that the pigeon is useful for beginners with its homing ability, whereas other weapons like the knife are a very potent and accurate weapon. I am writing this reveiw based off of past experience with the game, and it does run at native 2160x1440 resolution at max graphics at 48-60fps on an i3-4010Y, which is very impressive optimization. Of course, the graphics are simple but clean.

I highly recommend this game, but if you have hesitations about this game due to other reviews that are not written, check out the iOS reviews and other game website reviews for this. I grabbed this at a 75% off sale making it a great value, the value at full price is gonna be more dependent on whether you have freinds to play with, as this is a solely multiplayer game.

Nifty, but requires odd people hanging around your apartment. I do not have this odd physical DLC this game requires to be properly fun.

This game looks cool, but only for more than one person.
Basically, you can't really play it alone.
The keys are weird, I had to press all the keys in my keyboard to make characters ready, you can't use the mouse to choose and that's a pain.
OK, i could make 2 random characters ready, but, it's really weird how you play them.
THIS GAME NEEDS AN EXPLANTATION - HOW TO PLAY.
Oh and there's no exit button, so only the task manager can handle it.

Well, it wasn't difficult decission, even when I didn't really like the game at start.

I decided that indeed I would not recommend this game, although I honestly think it may have potential, once they include:

1. LAN support and/or Online Vs. Modes.
2. More options as to increase the amount of deaths before the end game.
3. Succesfully put some story behind the characters.

I hope this is taken in a constructive way.

If you have even a bit of respect left to yourself, you won't play this game never in your life, except you will adopt those poor 3 cards.

I mean, game itself definitely were created by the devil himself, because I really needed time to get the idea how to turn the match which such control explanation. I already understood that this game needs more people to be able to play it and guess what, I have no friends, so I just tried to play with myself and I lost.

It does have a potency as a game, but creators probably knew this is going to be ♥♥♥ licking and just tried to get lost from it as fast as possible, so they didn't even bothered to make bots. I would say, have even bit of respect and don't play this... I mean, give me each 9 euros!!! and I will personally going to build you a game each and you will enjoy it more than this.

Oh my god, they didn't provide the 'Quit' button. If they did, it would be the most useful part of the game. :)

Right out of the gate Gentlemen boxes itself in a corner. A local multiplayer only brawler, it requires a group (preferably of four) to crowd around the computer to even be able to play the game, which obviously alienates a good chunk of potential players. Assuming you can round up some friends however it's hard to imagine spending much time with these dapper little maniacs, as the amount of content is nowhere near enough to sustain more than a handful of minutes of play, and with the work some will likely have to do to get enough players I couldn't recommend it over any one of the many more compelling options available.

Gameplay falls somewhere between Super Smash Bros. and VVVVV, as you flip your way around the arenas collection weapons and trying to rack up the requisite number of kills first. That's really all there is to the game, as options are barebones and the different modes do little to switch up the experience (most do nothing but change which weapons are available to use). All of the gentlemen and ladies play the same and are just cosmetically different to be distinguishable from one another amid the chaos of everyone jumping and shooting at once.

Truth be told I did actually have some fun do to the inherent insanity that breeds a certain level of comedy when no one understands what happened, but it was very short lived and considering both the price and prerequisite of gathering and keeping entertained several other people to play, I cannot advise others pick it up. Were the price significantly lower it would be a harder call, but at $10 with only about a dozen arenas, simply drawn and repetitive artwork (one character is barely more than a color swap), and gameplay that looses its charm after you learn how to play, I can't see anyone getting their moneys worth out of Gentlemen!

Nine out of ten suave tea drinking gents agree it's not worth it.

I felt the need to review this game, because I bought this in a bundle, read the (strongly negative) reviews, and played it anyways.

I had two friends over and fired this up with me on the laptop, a logitech controller, and a wireless keyboard for our mixed controllers. And you know what?

We had a lot of fun.

No online multiplayer and no bots- these are two very common complaints. Having played the game, though, I realize that neither is a good fit for the game. It's too quick and frantic for bots, and being killed by bots would be infuriating. It would be like playing Mario Party with bots- not really fun, just annoying no matter what level they're on. Online multiplayer could work, but it's more of that "party game" feel, where yelling at your friends and swearing is a huge part of the fun.

The only other complaints I've heard are these:

Not a lot of variety- True. It doesn't have the variety of gameplay that Super Smash Brothers might, but it's also much less expensive. You won't clock in as many hours here, but you'll get a couple.

No Quit Button- legitimate complaint, but is fixed now.

Conclusion- I got this in a bundle, and it easily was the best game of the bunch. If you like local multiplayer and frantic gameplay, this one's worth buying on a sale or in a bundle, and even full price, I doubt you'll be disappointed. Get some USB controllers and a couple friends that you don't mind swearing like a sailor with.

I can only play this game with friends. I have friends. Well, I think I do.
But my friends want to play with me from the comfort of their own home, and unfortunately this game does not support online multiplayer.

ONLY RECOMMENDED IF...

You live with your friends, or have family members that enjoy playing videogames featuring characters with facial hair.

May seem weird at first, but trust me, this game is AMAZING. Turn on big picture, plug up to a TV, grab a friend or three, and prepare for some crazy f***ing arena action. Think hyper-speed 1-hit-kill Super Smash Bros. with gravity switching. Old-school local multiplayer at its best.

P.S. - Lots of people are ragging on the game for not having online multiplayer, but in my opinion the game wouldn't be nearly as fun without your friends/opponents physically present. If you're not into hanging out with your friends in person anymore, then this isn't the game for you. That doesn't make it a bad game, though. Far from it.

P.P.S. - Knives only mode is definitely the most fun.

Solid local multiplayer fun. Better in large groups, entertaining with good company. Not complex in the slightest, easy to pick up and great for filling in time with friends.

Ideally played when drunk.

I enjoy this game immensely. The main issues people seem to be having with this game are the lack of single player and online multiplayer modes. The whole idea is for this to be a social game, for there to be actual interaction with your friends (or strangers). Half the fun of this game is screaming like a banshee at someone as you try to knife them... Or as you will your pigeon to its final destination.

This is the biggest piece of ♥♥♥♥ game I own. Thankfully i got it in a bundle as an extra and didnt spend a dime on it.

There is NO online play
There is NO single player
There is no way I could see to exit the game besides task manager.

Unless you want to crowd 2-4 of your friends in front of your keyboad and play local co op or play against a motionless oponent this game is worthless.

I actually re installed this and let it run for two more minutes just to be able to post how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ this game is.

'Gentlemen!' has a lot of potential, I presonally love brawler games. But there are multiple problems plaguing gentlemen's gameplay:
Firstly, many brawler games are enjoyed on consoles, but this one is solely designed for keyboard, now 4 people cramming there faces onto one screen ain't fun, and if you are lucky enough to own 4 individual keyboards and a USB Hub, you may enjoy this, but for me, 4 pairs of hands on one keyboard ain't fun.
Another problem is the lack of a Singleplayer ability, or atleast AI or the Computer to fill in the spot of missing players. I'm alone at home alot and I wanted to play this game, but my only choice is to play against myself, which isn't really fun.
If you're lucky enough to have 2-4 friends who like brawler games and atleast 2 keyboards, there's the problem with the gameplay.
Unlike other brawlers, this one has no health bars, it's one hit KO. There's no 'hit him alot and he'll rocketship into the void', infact there's no void at all, an enclosed area. Then without the health bars, the game gets really easy to gain the number of kills needed. Then there's the over-powered weapons, the Pigeon, once you get it, that's it, the opponents are done for. The Pigeon is a weapon that follows it's opponent around until it finally reaches it's target, at which time it explodes and kills the opponent. Think of that, but an infinite supply. Yeah.
I do aknowledge there are a variety of gamemodes, so that's a good thing.
Another thing is that this game is about gentlemen with facial hair, but the theme has no effect on the gameplay. It's just there. Hell, it could be butt-people and poo-men in crapland brawler and it would be the exact same game. The game should be unique, with special mustache abilities, or special attacks for each character and unlockables, but instead is a lousily finished brawler.

Unless you insist, try to stay away from that buy button, or buy it when there's a sale. Definitely not worth the money.

I will update this review as the game gets updated, but it seems the developers have thrown this aside as a side project.
