Small update and plans for localization

Hi all,
We made a few fixes to the GUI for the AGF Game Packager. The text was a bit off.

Also, we are planning on adding some localization to AGF sometime this month.
So far I've added spanish, and turkish. If you have a request for a specific language, feel free to leave it in a comment below and I'll make sure to add it in.

  • 4) Give a Name to the Game
  • … And the AGF Packager does the rest… it’s really that easy! Best of all, friends do not need to own AGF to run the packaged game, nor do they need to have a Steam account. The Packaged Game is completely stand-alone, DRM FREE, and redistribution of users game(s) is encouraged. AGF Packager will make a game for the OS that it was packaged on.   • Users are able to create game levels and maps using the software and also place characters (provided with the software) to play and explore their levels with multiple player style options (Action Role Playing, Platformer, FPS)

  • Just to be CLEAR – AGFPRO is NOT a game engine. It is literally made using the Unity game engine. AGFPRO is a real-time, RAPID Game Environment Development Toolkit and is made to be used in concert with Unity Free and Pro for level/map creation. – However, AGFPRO does NOT need Unity to run or create levels/maps.

  • The scene files that users create in AGFPRO “Basic” and “Premium” can be imported into Unity4 Free and Pro using our AGF/Unity tools.

  • By using the DLC we have already released for AGFPRO (Fantasy Side-Scroller, Zombie FPS, Drone Kombat, BattleMat Multiplayer & Voxel Sculp), users are able to create playable levels with AGFPRO (only – not viable with Unity) with a variety of characters, assets, gameplay mechanics and special feature, “Scene-Linking” to connect game levels

This is not a game maker.

It can be used to design and test some assets and locations before exporting them into a game engine but you cannot, for example, create characters, plots, menus, skills, missions, etc. The name is therefore misleading.

It is a cool idea and the guys who make it look really genuine but it fails for the following reasons: the user interface is HORRIBLE - you have a three tier menu to get to select an item, the camera moves on it own, there is basically NO DOCUMENTATION at all. You will have to trawl through youtube and forums to find basic instructions. The only official information is some tutorial videos which themselves make it clear that they are "quick and dirty". The Steam manual is a joke, it's a two-page PDF with some patch notes.

In my opinion this software is useless for an experienced game maker and incomprehensible and unusable for a newbie. I think there is a niche for people who want to test out whiteboxing scenes befor exporting but that isn't what the name of the game implies and I'm not convinced you couldn't achieve your ends better in Unity.

Very disappointed with this software. Meaning that while the tool is fine, it is not for what you might expect. It is not a tool for voxel terrain creation (the dlc), it is not a software to make game environments. It might help you slightly when it comes to creating terrain in unity, but ignore the dlc. The dlc mainly works to create some small stuff for you to walk around/play with, not creating an actual game.

So yea, can't recommend it, on the basis of what I believe people are interested in it for. If you are more curious to try game creation you might just want to give this a try when you find it on sale or as part of a bundle (an often occurance on bundle star).

Pros
+Terrain editor is nice
+Enough free assets to get you started

Cons
-Different control scheme from unity makes it annoying to switch between the two
-exported terrain obj file will crash unity
-laggy texture painting and terrain molding
-Rotation of objects is clunky and can't vertex or grid snap after placed

Ultimately, it doesn't really do anything that Unity can't. The terrain tools would be much better if they weren't so clunky and the controls were't so different. If you can grab it at a discount and export the models it might be worth it, but as is, serious developers are better off looking for other solutions.

As an addendum, I did interact with the developers once and they seem... very emotional and prone to mood swings. At least the person I interacted with did. Not a reflection of the software itself but something to keep in mind if you think you'll need support.

As an avid level designer always seeking the most effective way of creating various types of landscapes, I can say that after just a few hours of testing this product, I am amazed at it's power and simplicity it brings to it's target audience. While the program itself is being worked on, it goes to show that with each update, both major and minor flaws are looked at and patched, with continuous updates across all the products AGF has to offer.

The developers themselves are some of the most engaging and polite people I have ever had the pleasure of speaking to. When I had an issue with understanding how importing/exporting in the Constructor worked, I receieved a reply e-mail within minutes of sending it out, at 3am! The fact they take their time and carefully check on these kinds of things gives me great confidence in what will come in the future of this product.

If you purchase this product expecting to make the next Skyrim, or the next FarCry, you are setting your expectations far too high. This is an environment and asset tool used to make medium to moderately high detailed landscapes and assets, and for a heck of a steal! You get over 100 assets to play with, and the Constructor tool allows you to mix and match those "pieces" to make something entirely of your own. The combinations and possibilities are fair considering what you are paying for.

I have spent hours upon hours researching the Unity marketplace and if you want something AAA quality, you're going to pay AAA price. The fact that AGF have gone from their first type of business model, to the various split packages, shows that they want this program to be accessible for all aspiring game developers on a budget.

Honestly, I find it unfair that the people at AGF have gone to great lengths to do what they do and be so negatively critisized for not making something "of Industry Standard". This is a work in progress that is being developed (at the time of this writing) on top of all the other things they have to offer! Go browse the Unity store, look for everything you want, and do the math. Exactly. Until you have the budget to make that happen, this tool can provide useful for building up prototypes to fund your projects, or even make something personal for your own enjoyment.

Overall, I highly recommend this product. The people at AGF are wonderful and will help you when you really need it, offering insight on literally any question you have personally!

- Import feature can, at times, be a bit overwhelming in Unity (time, memory usage, loading, etc)
- Some bugs get overlooked when they are key to fixing problems (in my opinion)

What more could you ask for at its price point, Its not by any means perfect and dont expect to make the next big craze but you are getting a really good program that makes creating your own project to play with your friends possible.

Would highly recommend to anyone who want to have a go at basic game designing as a hobby.
