Update game to Version 1.5

A small update (5mb) is available that will bring your Steam copy to version 1.5.

This includes Russian, Portuguese, Hungarian & Finnish texts in the game (select from main menu > options or via setup/winsetup > language).

You can also select Polish but this language is not working fully yet.

Please be aware these are all translations written by fans - a big thanks to them & their hard work and enthusiasm. As such there may be some small errors, which we will work to fix asap. The translators will be working from this update to smooth out their translations. So there may be some additional minor updates in case of spelling/grammar tweaks to the translations etc (and hopefully a fully working Polish language) over the next few weeks.

In the meantime please do try the game with these new texts and let us know if there are any major problems. Please note no graphics have been updated or changed, they remain in English.

We also made a slight modification to the translation file names, as we heard that some computers were having difficulties recognizing the filenames. No other changes have been made.

Version 1.5 is currently only available on Steam. An update for DRM-free copies is planned for the near future. We may try and add even more languages in the future. Further announcements will be posted of any new language updates.

Sorry if this has caused you any inconvenience but thanks for being patient whilst we get these additional languages working. regards!

PS. As always, if you have any major issues especially relating to this update, please make a post on the discussions board :)

Note to our kind translators who may wish to fix their TRS file: You may notice in tutorial section the words get obscured by the images of keyboard buttons etc. We need you to find shorter words as the graphics cannot be easily moved around. Try and use short words. This is noticeable in Russian version, where a long word at the beginning pushes the rest behind the graphics. In French, where the length of words are almost equal to the English counterpart, there is little problem here.

Small update to Version 1.4

We have made an update to your current version 1.4.

1. Resizing of fonts to ensure text is not cut off during dialog sequences/options
2. Potential fix for a game-breaking bug in chapter 3*
3. Italian language added, first language to be added since release of ver 1.4
4. Soundtrack now included! Can be found in Library > Music

This is currently a Steam only update. We have not released a DRM-free update or update to other providers at this point.

Please understand that over the next couple of days things may not be fully functional. We will of course work to rectify them. As far as we are aware, Save Games still work without any problems.

Please also be aware that WINSETUP has also been updated a little, with new Advanced Options. You may need to fiddle with the settings again if you see large borders, using Advanced > Show top & bottom borders etc.

Linux version should also be working ok - speech files are now back (some users found they were missing right after the update).

We intend to add more languages over the coming weeks, so you may experience some other very small updates occurring over the next month.

Be aware that there is currently no update to the save/load system, so save slots are still limited (roughly 50). But we are working on this for a future update, to include a "Max slots" alert & the ability to delete slots. In the meantime, we strongly suggest newer players to move/delete old save game files (typically found in My Documents > My Saved Games > The Cat Lady)

Thanks for your patience and sorry for any inconvenience.

* Please let us know about any strange issues/bugs/dead-ends that happen in Chapter 3 or 4 (typically things relating to the shower) - or in relation to any of the other fixes in this update. Again we're sorry if this happens, please help us work through it & fix them!

Bonus update: We have included the full OST as part of your Steam purchase. You'll find it in Library > Music (an update may be required).

We'd also like to add news of the sad passing of Astrid Beulink today who had been battling cancer. In 2013 she visited AdventureX (expo run by Screen 7 in the UK) and chose The Cat Lady when winning a prize in the end raffle and asked Michalski to sign it - it was the first time he had ever signed an autograph! Astrid's energy and enthusiasm for the adventure game scene, genre and The Cat Lady will be sorely missed, but will not be forgotten by myself, Michalski & the adventure game community. Rest in peace x

"The Cat Lady" will hurt you. The story of Susan Ashworth, a failed suicide forced to take a different path, will cause you pain and a degree of mental anguish - and that's okay, because there are some things that *should* hurt when you experience them, even through the proxy of a video game.

The game can be thought of as having two halves that intertwine with each other throughout. One half deals with Susan Ashworth's confrontation with five "parasites" - serial killers whose exploits are depicted with unsparing detail. This portion of the game is suspenseful, gory, horrifying, and ultimately not all that interesting; the shocks and surprises are so over-the-top that they're easily dismissable as something that only happens in the world of make-believe.

The power of "The Cat Lady" comes from its other half. This part of the story is far more personal, dealing with the past trauma that led to Susan's suicide attempt; her growing friendship with a young boarder named Mitzi with a haunted past of her own; and their efforts to save each other from the inner darkness that threatens to consume them. Their stories are dark, but the game wisely introduces a lot of humor in their relationship as well ("think of a vegetable") that occasionally descends into outright farce (the babysitter scene comes to mind). This balance, along with the excellent dialogue and voice acting, make Susan and Mitzi seem very real, and that makes it impossible not to emphasize with them both.

And that makes the game's soul crushing scenes all the more devastating. The one that hit me the hardest involves an argument between a husband and wife, one that begins with petty accusations and descends into shouted accusations that visibly bludgeon the characters. There's no physical violence or over-dramatized threats, and the scene is all the more terrifying because of it. The situation is understated and real, as are the tragic consequences, and I was unable to shake the uneasy feeling that I was watching the lives of two real people fall apart.

"The Cat Lady" allows the players to make choices along the way that decide Susan and Mitzi's ultimate fate: whether they conquer their pain or fall prey to it. I'm oddly proud that I managed to achieve a measure of peace for them both. When I was done, I briefly thought about playing through the game again to view the other endings - but I quickly decided not to. It is wrong to play with human lives and cause idle grief, and by the time the credits for "The Cat Lady" rolled I was unable to think of Susan and Mitzi as anything other than real.

*I've beat this game twice and have all of the achievements.*

Synopsis from store page: "The Cat Lady follows Susan Ashworth, a lonely 40-year old on the verge of suicide. She has no family, no friends and no hope for a better future. One day she discovers that five strangers will come along and change everything..."

Before I go any further, I will give you probably the most important detail since this alone is a deal breaker for some: This game is story driven. There is a LOT of dialog and cut scenes. What action there is consists of solving problems.

That out of the way, this game is AMAZING. It might be one of my favorite games ever. If you like dark, morbid games; this will be perfect for you. I don't think I've ever seen a game as morbid as this one. In this game, it's safe to assume that the worst will happen. Insanely creepy with haunting music, this game does not disappoint.

I will admit one thing, however. There were times when I couldn't play this for more than ten minutes. You have to be in a certain frame of mind for this one, and if you are a highly depressed person, this game may not be for you as the main character longs to die for most of the game. There are seven chapters and in my opinion the game really kicks off towards the end of chapter two. That's when your mind is blown and the game's true colors really shine.

This game is not very long. The dialog is what takes up the bulk of the time played. The achievements are not difficult at all. There are guides in the community hub and you should have absolutely no problem in this regard. There are multiple endings for this game. Without giving too much away, I HIGHLY suggest you save right before you are given a shoe box. Trust me on this one.

The graphics may be throwing you off as you consider this game. Trust me, I'm not a big fan of games like this where the graphics are old school and unrealistic. But you will soon appreciate the art and realize this game was made perfectly when it comes to graphics, music, and voice acting.

If you do love this game, check out Downfall in the Greenlight area. It is a remake of an older game made by the people who made The Cat Lady. I haven't played it yet, but I have read quotes from the creators that say they think the remake might even turn out better than this game. I'm so excited! It's supposed to come out this year. It HAS been greenlit.

One last piece of advice. One I give for every horror game. Play this alone, in the dark. Even better, with headphones.

Happy gaming!

Disturbing & Original // Not A Game For Cheerful People

+ The voice-actor for the protagonist is talented and convincing; she did an excellent job with nuances of expressing the emotions of the character
+ Boasts some genuinely disturbing (and sometimes frightening) moments that are delivered with finesse
+ Art style, for both characters and environments, is well-presented and fits well with the theme
+ Ambient sound is deeply unsettling, keeping the player properly unnerved throughout the experience
+ The way the game subdues its colors goes a long way to further immerse the player
+ There is a strong focus on character development
+ Interesting choices of musical score that are well-place to complement their respective scenes
+ Puzzles are interesting and fun to move through; often one will find that they need to be creative to advance beyond an obstacle
+ Multiple endings available, depending on dialogue choices

- Cannot pause during conversations
- Voice-acting for secondary characters is largely mediocre (at best)
- The story suffers some moderate pacing issues, often dragging scenes on for excruciating lengths of time
- Little replay value beyond Steam achievements and multiple endings

The Cat Lady is a point-and-click horror adventure game. You are Susan Ashworth, a depressed woman without friends. Her only companions are cats. She is known in her neighborhood as the cat lady. The game begins with the suicide of the protagonist. In death Susan encounter the Queen of Maggots, who makes her immortal and gives her the mission to kill five psychopaths referred to as the "parasites." Susan then returns to the world of the living to wake up in a hospital bed and is soon forced to carry out her mission.
The Cat Lady is extremely narrative-driven, like a sort of horror visual novel. The puzzles are pretty easy. There are several endings and your choices throughout the game determine which you will get.
The graphics are well-chosen for this indie game. The colours are mainly black, white and greys but with a bit of colour in every scene. The game uses colour to help the player find the relevant objects.
The music is great, it really adds to the experience. The voice acting is good, nothing really big to complain about.
If you like horror games and point-and-click adventures then you will like The Cat Lady.

The Cat Lady is a dark, disturbing point and click adventure that truly lives up to those descriptors. I have yet to come across a game which covers such controversial topics and heavy adult material with such...grace. Most games, and media outlets in general, wouldn’t get near the plot of this adventure with a 10 foot pole; covering depression, suicide, drug and alcohol use, tragic deaths and psychological disorders in a way which does not sensationalize the issues but instead is able to put you inside the life of someone surrounded by them.
Gripping is one of the best words I have to describe my experience with The Cat Lady. After every play session I was left on edge and more than a little introspective about the issues in my own life. I think this title is incredible, progressive, and truly gives something to the art of game creation.

This game is awesome!
The story is very good, someone should make a movie with it, the music is good, the artwork is not that bad, you get used to it and start to like it and the puzzles aren't boring.

Really really great game!

At first glance a lot of people would mistake the unique art style for bad design, but the game's art style actually really adds to the atmosphere. Strong dark-light contrasts and only the occasional splash of vivid colours make the game creepy and intriguing.

One of the numerous things that make this game so great is how well done the protagonist is. Susan Ashworth is a lonely middle aged woman on the verge of suicide. She suffers from chronic depression, and only finds comfort in the company of the neighborhood cats, partically a black cat named Teacup, who visit her flat whenever she plays the piano. Because of this she is dubbed by the other residents from her building as "The Cat Lady". Her background, the way she talks, looks and what she says all fit the character to a tee. The voice-acting, partically Susan's, in this game is really impressive, too.

The story itself is one of the most interesting and unique out there. This isn't your typical horror game. There are a few jump scares here and there, there's the creepy atmosphere, scary characters and all that, but the game focuses more on what's going on inside the mind of Susan and the people around her. Although the game has very dark themes, the overall message of the game is quite positive and it's one that should be heard, especially by those who suffer from depression themselves.

The gameplay isn't too "elaborate", as the game is story-oriented. I still found it fun, though. Usually you had a few "puzzles" in every of the chapters, which were relatively easy to solve most of the time, challenging enough to keep you interested; but not so challenging that you'd have to look up a walkthrough a few times in every chapter. The puzzles got more elaborate, and more fun, as the game went along.

If there was one bad thing I could say about the game, it'd probably be the occasional (I actually only noticed it maybe twice in the game) inconsistency in audio during some of the game's dialogues and such. Not a big issue, but it could bother some people. Oh, and the lack of auto-save bothers some people. However, you can save the game at any time, so as long as you remember to do it every so often (at the start of every chapter for example) it shouldn't be a problem at all.

+ Decently Good Story
+ Great atmosphere
+ Ability to make some choices about the character
+ Character Development
+ Engaging main characters (Probably depends a little on personal experience)
+ Music is pretty good
+ Cheap
+/- Graphics are obviously not great, but they can also add to the atmosphere
+/- I personally liked the voice acting, but you can hear the feedback of the mic somewhat often (not really all that distracting though)
- A few impossibilities/absurdities here and there (the mundane ones, not the supernatural)
- On the shorter side (I finished everything there was to finish in 11 hours and I was probably going rather slowly)
- Interface can be a little clunky at first
- Resolution is low as ♥♥♥♥, I think 600x900, which can make it buggy to start non-windowed.

8.5/10, I am not sure I would say its a masterpiece, but if you're looking for an indie game to spend some time on, pick this up and give it a try. I would say this is one of the better indie games I have found on Steam, but that's just my tastes.

This game has the best character design i have seen in years. Never thought i could find the protagonist Susan Ashworth interesting at all. Who is she? she is a crazy cat lady who is depressed and tries to do suicide and awakens up in a hospital and then some extremely disturbing stuff happens that leaves you wondering what is real and what is not. Not exactly the normal big busted heroinne right? Susan is the polar opposite to not one but a whole load of design decisions that are so normal in games since day 0. Just for that, one must applaud the daring decision to make susan as she is and not make her 'dark' and 'emo' just to make her more easily approachable.

Opening 20minutes of the game is not impressive at all. Character literally looks as one would expect someone who wants to die right now looks like. Everything is gray and awfull. It easily kills of the interest in the game early but keep on playing and you start to understand why all looks so terrible. Story gets good. and really, really disturbing. Lots of blood, entrails, sick psychos and death in various forms. Susan is also just a mortal woman. (well almost) - No special moves or ways to hurt bad people unless the story give a specific way to do that.

8.8/10 horror game done right. Even better as Amnesia or Anna as this one opens up little at a time w/chapters and doesnt leave it all to the end.

Some small bad things to mention: Achievement collection could have been better. i won't be bothered to collect them all as they are mostly hidden achievements or something you get for selecting an alternate dialog. Load/Save system does not allow overwriting of saves for some reason. But these are all small things compared to how well this little indie game performed.

This game is another indie gem that has come out in later years to beef up the stagnating horror game scene that has been too fixed on dumb jump scares/zombies and for that i love it.

Where do I begin ... I randomly bought this game because it was very cheap (sale) and because the theme looked interesting to me. I normally never play games like this, but I can say I was positively surprised.

This game isn't for everyone, its subjects are dark: depression, suicide, murder, cancer ... It's for people who want to enjoy a good story about these kind of things. Even if you've never been in contact with them, the game is very good at explaining how a depressed person goes through life. The game can be quite confrontating towards people who've suffered from any of the topics above, but it's still an interesting experience.

STORY: really good. At chapter 1 I was interested, but I wasn't blown away or anything. At the end of chapter 2 I was completely hooked though. I thought this game was going to give me a nice, regular story about depression, but I was wrong. It throws things at you you wouldn't expect. Well the game is tagged "horror", so I guess I should've expected the story would become even darker & sicker than it already was ...
Quite linear story, but you can make some choices that change the plot quite a bit.

GAMEPLAY: Oddly satisfying. You play through each of the 7 chapters and have to explore your environment to gather items and to find out more about the characters. This game works with a kind of puzzle system: find X, so you can get to Y, so you can finally do Z. Quite obvious puzzles, but here and there you might have to think.
Also, there's a good balance between watching dialogues (that you can alter; really fun) and getting to play yourself.

ART: I honestly love the art of this game. The game often presents itself in a white/black-ish style, which I guess is quite logical regarding the subjects of this game. Now and then, there's also some colour to be found which emphasizes certain items/events in the game. There are some areas that could've been made better, but the most important areas in the game look really good, so no problem.

SOUNDTRACK: Just absolutely fantastic. Really makes the game a much better experience. The music changes from pretty calm, to eerie, to sometimes even agressive ... all depending on the situation you find yourself in. Also, pretty cool (and eerie!) sounds/noises are used, like cracking stairs and doors, screaming women, the typical jumpscare sounds you'll fall victim to everytime (or maybe the total opposite).

ATMOSPHERE: By far the most amazing thing about this game. Nothing much to say about it, you really just have to play it yourself to feel it.

So yeah, really good game. Love it a lot, despite not expecting it would be this good. Again, not for everyone, but if you want to give this game a fair chance and open yourself up to it, you'll find yourself dragged into this game and just want to keep playing. At the end credits, you'll just find yourself staring at the screen, asking yourself what the ♥♥♥♥ you have been playing (and most of all; why you enjoyed it so much).

P.S: some people have unanswered questions after playing the game. Apperently playing "downfall" would answer some of these questions (though I can't confirm as I have not played it myself).

+First impression:
the NAME, is just GORGEOUS. i mean, look.... the Cat Lady :3

full-voiced (with very strong UK accent),
absolutely stunning story, dreamlike scenery (like, deer wandering around), and multiple endings.
BUT the Game system/Level design got me relatively long time to kinda...get used to. (lags, and I failed several times to... SAVE)

the first girly(?) game i ever played on steam, i really enjoyed playing through.
9/10 would play it again. please fix.....the...game system... :error:

Oh and.... Don't feed the trolls.
