Loved it! At times a bit slow maybe, specially at the start. But...

1. Awesome atmosphere
2. Interesting storyline
3. Sick and gruwesome
4. Did I mention sick?
5. Great voiceovers
6. In depth characters
7. Did i mention sick?
8. Low budget , but made in a way that it is just very artistic. Really well done.

Felt more like an interactive story for most parts as a game. ( like a story told with a picture book, not a movie.) But the game part was pretty decent too. Some nice puzzles. Not too easy, not too hard. Finished the game in one breath.

"The Cat Lady" will hurt you. The story of Susan Ashworth, a failed suicide forced to take a different path, will cause you pain and a degree of mental anguish - and that's okay, because there are some things that *should* hurt when you experience them, even through the proxy of a video game.

The game can be thought of as having two halves that intertwine with each other throughout. One half deals with Susan Ashworth's confrontation with five "parasites" - serial killers whose exploits are depicted with unsparing detail. This portion of the game is suspenseful, gory, horrifying, and ultimately not all that interesting; the shocks and surprises are so over-the-top that they're easily dismissable as something that only happens in the world of make-believe.

The power of "The Cat Lady" comes from its other half. This part of the story is far more personal, dealing with the past trauma that led to Susan's suicide attempt; her growing friendship with a young boarder named Mitzi with a haunted past of her own; and their efforts to save each other from the inner darkness that threatens to consume them. Their stories are dark, but the game wisely introduces a lot of humor in their relationship as well ("think of a vegetable") that occasionally descends into outright farce (the babysitter scene comes to mind). This balance, along with the excellent dialogue and voice acting, make Susan and Mitzi seem very real, and that makes it impossible not to emphasize with them both.

And that makes the game's soul crushing scenes all the more devastating. The one that hit me the hardest involves an argument between a husband and wife, one that begins with petty accusations and descends into shouted accusations that visibly bludgeon the characters. There's no physical violence or over-dramatized threats, and the scene is all the more terrifying because of it. The situation is understated and real, as are the tragic consequences, and I was unable to shake the uneasy feeling that I was watching the lives of two real people fall apart.

"The Cat Lady" allows the players to make choices along the way that decide Susan and Mitzi's ultimate fate: whether they conquer their pain or fall prey to it. I'm oddly proud that I managed to achieve a measure of peace for them both. When I was done, I briefly thought about playing through the game again to view the other endings - but I quickly decided not to. It is wrong to play with human lives and cause idle grief, and by the time the credits for "The Cat Lady" rolled I was unable to think of Susan and Mitzi as anything other than real.

The cat lady is a point and click adventure game, but describing it only so would be an understatement. The puzzles are easy and solving them mainly gives way to an emotionally invested story. You are Susan Ashworth, - the cat lady- and you have just done what you wanted to do for a long time: committed suicide. You soon realize though that this is not the end, as you get sent back to life with the mission to kill some so called "human parasites", people who have done even more unthinkable things than yourself. Be prepared, this is indeed a horror game with a few disturbing scenes that mainly uses its bleak atmosphere and despair as its tools instead of jump scares.

Pain, depression, fear, hope, love, are twisted in a dream-like fashion in the form of a game. Its charm lies In that essentially, it embodies everything that makes us human. If you are drawn to things that will stir you up inside, this game is for you. The story of the Cat Lady will haunt your mind long after you have finished playing it.

I don't know why I gravitate towards games that deal with mental disorders, particularly depression and anxiety, but The Cat Lady is one that captivated me from the start. The game starts out with you committing suicide and ending up in what I can best describe as a purgatory of sorts. In order to save your soul you're tasked with taking those of deranged and depraved lunatics in trade. Each and every chapter is somber and more than just a little depressing. For anyone who knows what it's like to suffer such things it really hits the mark. The endings (for there are about three or so of them) really make an impact when you take the game as a whole into account. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to play a dark and somewhat twisted game. Just a word of warning, though. Don't play if you're already feeling down.

This game is pretty much a scary gem in itself. When I first saw it, I debated buying it for awhile (until it went on discount that is) since I assumed there would be lots of cats in the game. There are kitties thankfully, but the real focus is on the CAT LADY you play as. Cats, cats, cats.

Graphics are a bit grainy but this is fine since it reminds me of older detective style games on computers, but with killers being killed instead. The cutscenes looked great and some the backgrounds and background things were creepy good. Really nice to see small details make things a lot better. Funny how the walls outside of every Flat though are seemingly decaying and yet no one has ever bothered to paint and fix it up.

The audio vaired for me. Susan's voice fell flat most of the time but that's alright since she's getting over having just killed herself and depression as well. Then some of the other voice actors either had popping sounds with their microphone setups or there was static hanging in the background as they spoke their lines. Seeing David Firth of Salad Fingers fame do voices in this game was also pretty cool.

The dialogue was kind of all over the place. A lot of misspelling of words (intentional or not) and it sometimes overlapped with audio. I noticed with the Nurse that sometimes her lines would repeat when the subtitles changed to the next set of subtitles. I also noticed (either due to how often I saved or just the game itself) that from Chapter 4 onwards that the subtitles stopped appearing EVEN WHEN the subtitles are turned on.

The music was nice, ranging from ambient to grunge rock. Sad to see the soundtrack is not available for purchase on Steam, although it can be purchased from the main site.

The story itself was very well written and the twists and turns were nice. Although the plot with Joe and his wife is not mentioned after showing them in a hidden room... Just listening to the story each character has to tell makes the game a lot of just standing around listening though.

8.5/10

This is the darkest and most twisted game I have ever played. And I loved every second of it. To be honest, the previews didn't excite me at first and I thought this was another cheap and ugly indie game with no good story what so ever, but oh was I wrong, I quickly fell in love with the game and this might be one of the best horror/adventure games I've ever played if not THE best.
A truly masterpiece, not for everyone though due to it's mature and dark content.

The only downside of this game would be some of the voice acting which was kind of embarrassing a lot of times through the game, but the great music kind of made up for it most of the time. But as I said, I didn't expect much out of this game at first so that's not really a big deal for me personally.
Needless to say this game was totally worth every cent and second of my life.

Basicly one of the best computer games I have ever played, if not the best one. Absolutely fantastic voice acting, fabulous dialogue writing, great plot, astonishing scenery which at the same time is seriously morbid - this game contains the most insane and disturbing scenes I have ever seen in games. Sure, you can find a lot of blood and gore in games, but in The Cat Lady theese scenes have something more to them, something that makes them more thrilling, than some random blood and guts on the screen.
There are some minor flaws, like in every adventure game there are some puzzles that seem not very logical and few scenes that are not very convincing (like inside Pauline's flat when three persons spend far too much time deciding who's gonna open the door and who goes to bathroom with Mitzi), but theese things are not game braking in any way, just somewhat annoying. The last flaw that needs mentioning is animation of the characters (especially Susan and Mitzi). While the whole graphics beeing raw and ugly makes it at the same time very in place and atmosphere amplifying, animation of characters is very shaky and causes eye fatigue.
Nevertheless I highly recommend playing The Cat Lady for all those who are bored with naive and trivial game stories which we face in great majority of other games and seek something more convincing and interesting. You won't regret it.

I wasn't sure what to expect before i started the game. Some indie developed games tend to feel cheap and vacant. Not this one!

The Cat Lady is a very well made game. What struck me was the strong direction of gameplay/story and the superb soundtrack. It's a point n click game that feels more like an action game. It could have been longer, but to be honest, the pace of the game is perfect as it is. With different endings and choices throughout the gameplay, i will more than likely give it another playthrough in the future.

If you are on the fence about getting this, i would recommend it. If you like a thought provoking story with immersive atmosphere and a sense of danger, this is the game for you.

(tl;dr version at bottom)
This game is just.. so amazing. I've never done a review before,
but with this game, just... bear with me.
PROS:
-Decisions make key differences
-Character personalities are unique
-Character voices are spot-on with relation to personalities
-Background, Character, and Scene art gives gives 'vibes' between what is safe and what is not
-Story is phenomenal and leaves a sense of wonder (some parts leave your imagination to it, but not too much that it's frustrating)
-Puzzles can range from simple steps, to thinking 'outside the box'
-The jump scares are great, and there aren't so many that it becomes predictably boring (I.E. Dead Space or F.E.A.R imo)
-The eeriness is nearly constant, and it's refreshing when otherwise

CONS:
-Occasional change in tone of voices, possibly just recording bugs
-First part of game includes some tedious wait time, (But assuming you can read decently faster than they speak, spacebar helps speed through boring dialogue)

BOTH:
-Includes a fair amount of guessing/chance to your decisions.

tl;dr? Buy it. It's on sale, and even if it wasn't, it's a fantastic puzzle/horror game with a great story. Job very well done.

It is the story that makes The Cat Lady outstanding. It is an original horror story that had me in its grip for the whole time to complete the game. The main protagonist is Susan Asworth, a 40-year-old woman who in the beginning of the game swallows a whole bunch of sleeping pills to end her life. Her suicide attempt hurls her into a world of supernatural, darkness, madness, violence and perversion. A lot of disturbing situations and imagery goes on throughout the game. The story also deals with themes like depression and terminal illness — themes that rarely are a subject in video games. Somehow the game reminds me of the 90's cult classic adventure games Harvester and Sanitarium.

Even though The Cat Lady feels like a descendant of the nineties point and click adventure games, the controls aren't actually "point and click" style, because the player uses a keyboard instead of a mouse. It can feel a bit clunky at first, but it's not something that the player can't get used to. Also, the characters can only move left and right on the screen — the areas are not "pseudo 3D" like in the classic adventure games.

The graphics might be a turn-off for some of the contemporary gamers. It's pixelated, and I couldn't find a way to change the resolution or the aspect ratio, and was stuck with 800 x 600 resolution and 4:3 ratio. I didn't mind that. The graphics and overall visual style of the game appeal to me a lot. Also the sound design is enjoyable. The music fits the twisted and horrific tone of The Cat Lady. Voice actors are doing a great job.

The puzzles aren't too frustrating and there's not much backtracking. The game's rather easy and it took me approximately seven hours to beat it. There is an annoying "feature" that won't allow you to make more than 50 game saves and you can't delete the saved games in-game to make more room for new saves. You have to do it manually in the saved games folder. Other than that, the game worked flawlessly.

I loved the whole gaming experience and The Cat Lady surely is going to be a cult classic of the future.

2 odd things I found out after I started playing this game: the main character is called Susan and my name is Susan(a) lol Also, she has green eyes just like I do. After that I just had to finish it lol

I'm not a big fan of scary games, mostly because I'm usually scared senseless of them >.< I mean, I'm curious but frightened at the same time. Anyway, this game isn't all that scary, people like me can manage just fine. Yes there are some creepy scenes and sounds that will raise the hair in the back of your neck and you might get some goosebumps but you will still be able to carry on without having to take breaks or quit the game altogether.

The gameplay is quite simple and while some parts aren't very intuitive, they are still quite doable after you really put your brain to work and pay attention to details that aren't there just to make the scene look 'nice'. I won't talk about the story behind the game because you can read it in the game store page. I will just tell you that for me, this game is just about choices. Some don't influence the game, at all, while others do. If you don't care about doing all the achievements, then just pick the ones you think are best.

There are sad parts and there are moments of morbid humor (at least there were for me) and there were, also, parts where I didn't find a bit of 'logic' in them and made me think they were thrown in there just so the devs could continue with the story. Regardless, I think people should give this game a try.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that the soundtrack for this game is amazing. It is truly one of the best I have ever heard.

A real eye opener into the world of sadness. Highly recommend!!
Great story line with a few spooks here and there but this game has captivating gamplay. Point and click (although you don't click...)
Addictive soundtrack and bizarre imagery make this game worth the $10

I love this game. It explores a lot of themes other games wouldn't touch. It's not afraid to shock you, but doesn't do so TO shock you. The story is deep, interesting, and very well presented. It's accompanied by a really good and fitting soundtrack, and the visual style is very unique and equally fitting. It starts off a tad slow, but then ramps up in intensity really quickly. If you give a try, wait at least until you meet Mitzi before you decide if you like it or not.

If you like point and click games, adventure games, games with really dark themes, games with awesome soundtracks, games with unique and crazy stories, or games with awesome characters, play this game!
