I'm back, and v231!

Flew back from Honduras yesterday, it was amazing! Swimming with dolphins, monkeys crawling on my head and big spiky dogs. It's nice to re connect with nature.

And I just looked at the sales figures and the 2 weeks birthday sale was a really good surprise, selling far more than any steam sale ever did. So thank you for the birthday gift :)

That super motivated me and I just finish tending to a few support requests I received for those 10 days.
-Now the Mac version works, I had turned on mac store validation by mistake
-I added FXAA, so now antialias should be faster and look better, also added a setting for that if you want extra fps.
-Lowered the shadows PCF # and removed PCF on many of shaders that didn't need it, this should gain you a few FPS
-Optimized the shadows draw distance so people setting Quality to low will run at a faster framerate
-Finally, foliage setting properly persists.

So give it a shot, it's in the publicbeta branch, if all is good I'll push it to the main. Have a great day.

-Laurent

Sobre este jogo

A super frantic Arcade Tower Defense, McDROID starts gently then progressively challenges your trigger finger and your wits (and your sanity) as you multitask like a robotic-spider-doggy-thing: running, shooting, building base, herding, healing, harvesting, repairing, planting, upgrading, researching, frying giant snail-hammer-thing with a giant-tesla-on-your-back (it actually happens).

Defend your shuttle against a variety of alien species as they mutate, corrupt the ground or even turn your crops against you. Load up on, play solo campaign or join in up to 3 people in survival arenas and take the battle to the enemy. If it gets too crazy, turtle up behind your defensive perimeter and assume direct control of the turrets.

Crash landing on their home planet, McDROID the robot and her brother Shuttle find everything too quiet, their sentient Planet is now mute, lobotomized by something evil. As they venture on a quest to heal her hearts, they encounter various strange critters and must use creative strategies.

Features:
  • (Batsh!t crazy) story campaign where each level uncovers a new game mechanic and research blueprint, and where you heal a planet.
  • Hard as nail Survival Levels with persistence: your towers and economy stay with you from death to death, but also bomb trees, unfortunately.
  • Persistent Research. Do you focus on improving your lasers first or branch out into bliss engine as you climb through the research trees?
  • Drop in/Drop out Co-Op: if you're overwhelmed in single campaign, have some robot-buddies join you.
  • Persistent base building: Complete a level on Normal and you can play on in Challenge and Nightmare modes. Your base and economy will carry over but will have to withstand much deadlier attacks!
  • Unique towers that create powerful synergies such as boosting power of automatic robots or teslas chain linking.
  • Space age cartoon graphics.
  • Not 40s, not 50s, not 80s but 60 rock!
  • Harvest the only sensible resource of the future: Unfeasibly large strawberries.
  • Achievements awarded for tasks ranging from tricky to insane.
  • Find the decals and paint to customize your McDROID, they are scattered about.
  • Supports Xbox 360 controller

NOTE: QWERTY only on all platforms and no gamepad support on Linux.

Solid TD-fun with a twist!

McDroid is an awesome little pearl, obviously overseen.
It's an immersive tower-defence game with some really neat, fresh ideas.

You're some adorable little droid with the mission to collect as many strawberries, seeds and diamonds as you can while fighting off hordes of different enemies that try to kill you and your base. And your towers. And your strawberries. And everything else.
With diamonds you'll research/buy new towers or upgrades in a special "shop-map" and said red berries are the per-map-currency with which you can buy weapons which you can either plant into the ground (fixed positions) as stationary defences or plant into yourself for additional firepower or utility.
You plant seeds in fixed spots that grow more strawberries regularly. But the more you build, the more you have to maintain/repair which will get very demanding in later waves.
You can also plant repair-arms, factories which gather berries themselves, small droids to help you fight, etc.
And what you have planted, you can pickup again and plant elsewhere. Or keep it on yourself. Whatever floats your boat here.
At some point in a level the strawberry-production will be stopped and you'll have to do with what you gathered so far, so you better hurry up in the first place, which is easier said than done :-)

The level selector is a map by itself, which is a neat idea. There are "only" 12 maps, but each with additional challenges and more to keep you going. There's even a nice "zoo" where you can see all creatures you've encountered so far.
You can then compare your results with your friends. The Dev plays the game himself and has awesomely high scores. I bet he cheats :-)

The good (what to love):
  • Unique and one-of-a-kind!
  • It's adorable and got a cute art-style
  • Walk around as heavy armed artillery? Or a repair-god? Or as a berry-gathering maniac? Or as a weakling in a heavily defended base? Rely on YOU or your towers? Your choice.
  • Each weapon (if you attach them onto yourself) can be charged for an additional punch. And separately if you wish to do so. E.g. Left arm makes PEW PEW PEW!-lasers while the right arm charges a big missile. Awesome!
  • You don't just place a tower and leave it be. No, they will get destroyed too. Did someone say micromanagement? Hell yeah!
  • Berries, seeds and diamonds vanish over time. So you need to grab them ASAP. Oh and of course you only can carry a limited amount of each, so you need to deliver them to your base all the time. OR you can attach a factory onto yourself and...
  • Cool music
  • It has COOP-features, which i have not tested yet
  • There's a story. But I really don't care about a story in a TD. But it does not hurt either :-)
  • Even with a totally overcrowded with hundreds of enemies and explosions and whatever else it remains playable. Performance is very good.

The bad (not good, but not gamebreakingly awful):
  • In some maps, at some points it can get horribly overcrowded up to the point where it's easier to oversee snowflakes in a snowstorm than enemies and towers :-)
  • There apparently WAS an in-game-shop or something like that. That thing's still there in the map-selector with only a "closed" sign. That's annoying. Wanna see it all!

The ugly (what to hate, may kill the fun):
  • Nothing!

Recommended?

You like Tower Defence games and maybe action shooters and some RTS too? Definitely worth a try!
You hate one of the said genres? You MAY still like it anyway.
There's no game I could say that is quite similar, so a comparison is out of question here.
I really enjoyed it, although it's no "classic" TD.

Too sad it didn't had the commercial success it deserved. Maybe the Dev should have named it "Fingered" or "NotGTAV" :-(

I bought this game in it's very early stages and it's probably one of my most played games alltogether in the last couple of years. It's a mixture of tower defense and action RTS. The game mechanics feel very well put together and multiplayer is a lot of fun, too, if you find someone to play with.
