Party Matchmaking Update

When we announced our plans for Season 3, we discussed our plans to deploy a Competitive Skill Restriction in a future update. We have deployed a Party Matchmaking update today to address these issues, but it’s a little different from what we first explained. Originally, the restriction prevented parties from queuing for Competitive matches if their Skill Ratings were too far apart, but the more we worked on the feature, the more we realized that there was a better way to do it. Before we explain what that "better way" is, let's first discuss how we got here:

First, the Competitive Restriction would have had a negative impact on groups of friends that were not abusing the system, but fell outside the new limitations. For instance, you may have been in a party with friends three tiers below you, then you won a match, ranked up, but your friends didn't. In this scenario, you would no longer be able to play together. Theoretically, this was a negative side-effect that you'd just have to accept to maintain the integrity of competitive play, but one of the reasons we kept thinking about alternatives.

Secondly, for the Champion players among you, a three-tiered skill restriction would not have entirely fixed the ability of players to exploit the Top 100 Skill Leaderboards. A Grand Champion paired with a Superstar -- the lowest-allowed player under the restriction -- would still climb the leaderboards more quickly than two Grand Champions playing together. This isn’t a bug, per se, it’s a logical outcome for the skill system. A Grand Champion and Superstar team is expected to lose to a team of two Grand Champions, so they earn more Skill rating for a victory. But this kind of setup also creates an incentive for fellow Champion players to "smurf" with an alternate, Superstar-ranked account so that ranks can be gained faster than playing legitimately.

Here's what we've decided to do instead:

Improved Party Skill Rating

Our new solution does a better job of fixing the problems at hand. Here's how it works:

  • You can search for Competitive games in a Party with anyone in your friends' list, regardless of their current skill tier
  • Instead of averaging each player’s skill together in a Party, Party Skill is now based on the highest-skilled player in the group
  • When skill ratings are updated after a match, the new Party Skill rating will be used to prevent players from ranking up faster by teaming up with lower-ranked friends

What does this mean in practice? Let’s look at a few examples:

  • A Challenger Elite player and a Prospect Elite player party up to play Doubles together. Previously, that combination would have averaged out to roughly Challenger II-level. Under the new system, they will be considered a Challenger Elite party.
  • A Grand Champion player and an Unranked player party up. Previously, they would have matched as Rising Star, and the Grand Champion could earn skill rating despite playing lower-ranked players. This pairing will now match as Grand Champion. And, more importantly, that Grand Champion player will earn the same skill rating as a party of two Grand Champions would - not the skewed gains seen on the live servers. And their opponents will gain or lose the same rating as they would against two Grand Champions.

This new system has major upsides. First, friends can still queue Competitive together even if their ranks aren’t quite close enough, and second, when players face off against parties of wide skill variance, the highest ranked player should be near their rank, not significantly above them. Finally, using a low-ranked "Smurf" teammate no longer gives any tangible benefit when ranking up.

Fixing Rank Boosting

We recognize that just fixing matches going forward doesn’t address the existing issues with players who have exploited these loopholes to reach rankings they don’t deserve.

For now, we will take specific action against players at Rising Star and above that have demonstrated a consistent pattern of partying with teammates well below their personal rank. This pattern is defined as follows:

  • Greater than 25% of matches played with a teammate more than eight skill tiers below the player.
  • Greater than 30 matches played with a teammate more than eight skill tiers below the player.

All players that meet either of the above criteria, and are in Rising Star tier or higher, will have their Skill Tier and MMR set to Rising Star, Division I. For the purposes of end of season rewards, they will not be considered to have reached Champion unless they reacquire that ranking after these changes.

As always we welcome your feedback and look forward to seeing how you like the new system. Enjoy!

Coming Soon: Headlander, Day of the Tentacle Items

Hello again! We’re back with more sweet cross-promotional news for you!

If you've been playing Double Fine Productions and Adult Swim Games’ playfully-titled '70s-inspired Metroidvania game, Headlander, (and we’ve don't blame you, we've been checking it out, too), then do we have something for you!

Though we had been going back and forth with our friends at Double Fine regarding potential ways to share cool stuff for our respective communities, we ultimately landed on showcasing a little bit of LucasArts’ old school charms and Double Fine’s fresh and humorous perspective with two new Garage customization items. Both of them will be available for FREE on PS4 and Steam PC when our next patch drops later this summer.

The Starcophagus Antenna (above) is inspired by a spaceship you’ll briefly explore in the aforementioned Headlander, while we've also grabbed the famous Purple Tentacle from Day of the Tentacle to commemorate its recent remastered revival. Check out that Topper’s slimy splendor in the screenshot below:

Double Fine has also returned the favor and added our famous Octane Battle-Car and the Rocket League ball into Headlander! As an extra bonus, the ball itself can also be vacuumed up if you want to shoot some interstellar hoops!

We won’t totally ruin the surprise of where you can find these Easter eggs in Headlander’s space station, but definitely check out the visual proof, below. Oh, and be sure to check back with us again over the next several weeks for some pretty exciting (and surprising) news about our big summer update. In the meantime, happy hunting!

Great game, cannot even put into words how the rush feels. When you play, you get such a rush and you feel amazing when you make a goal and even better when the match is dragged on to overtime and it keeps going and going. But of course, as much a fun game this is, it should be played with friends becuase you can get more laughs and communication. It still is fun even when you play solo.

It's a simple concept: Soccer, but with little rocket powered battle cars. You have a ball and you win by putting the ball into the net of your opponent before the time is up. If that wasn't enough, there are a few additional game modes like Basketball mode and hockey mode, which adds up some differences to keep one interested. If THAT wasn't enough, there is going to be a new game mode that seems party oriented coming in September that is sure to be a blast. Better time than never to get into this game.

The cars are all balanced, the DLC cars don't have any special aspects that make them better... In fact the only difference between the cars it seems is the hitboxes, and it seems to be a minor difference between each. As of now there's no pay to win aspects, nor are there any gaudy marketplaces like CSGO skins or anything like that. It's a pure competitive multiplayer game that has a high skill ceiling and allows you to really improve yourself if you put in the time and effort. It's a lot of fun and I'm sure it'll keep on growing as an esport as time goes on. The physics for the cars feel good, and boosting around the stadium is always adrenaline pumping.

The stages have some ambient music in the background, but the menus have some great electronic music that really fits the feel of the game, and the graphics are fantastic for high end, and still can be playable for people like me who have really low end PCs, though multiplayer might lag unfortunately.

Playing this game makes me interested in esports, in soccer, in other sports related games, and is just a great game worth playing, especially for the low price and amount of free content the devs just continually push out. It's just great.

TL:DR

A rather unique idea of cars and football (or soccer) together to create one of the best competitive games ever made. If you're someone like me, who doesn't like cars or football, you may be put off by this at first, but it's definitely not what it seems, it's no wonder it's so popular. Definitely worth it!

Now for the full review

Rocket League is a game where you drive around in a rocket powered car trying to score goals. Sounds boring doesn't it? It really isn't. Rocket League suprised me. It's not one of those generic sports games I was anticipating it to be. It's a really addicting and competitive game. The game is highly physics based, meaning you'll see cars jumping and flying around. Realistic!

Your team can have up to at least 4 players, with matches lasting five minutes. The goal is basically what you do in football/soccer, score goals. The team with the most goals wins. This can be a challenge sometimes as it does require team-work, unless it's 1 v 1. There definitely isn't a shortage of players, with thousands of players on Steam AND it's cross platform capability with players from the PS4, which isn't really seen that much in games. Finding a game shouldn't be too difficult either, the matchmaking system's perfect.

The game highly advises you to use a controller, except when I started playing, my controller stopped working, so I resorted to using the keyboard. Honestly, it wasn't that hard for me to adapt. It does take time, for some people, but after that the controls become pretty simple, though I would still recommend using a controller, as there are plenty of people who struggle with the keyboard and mouse.

The game isn't just multiplayer, there is a single player and a co-op mode. In single player, you are able to access a mode called Season. This puts you with your own unique team, and places you in a tournament against bots. I haven't really played much of it but it seemed pretty simple. If you want the most out of your money I would stick to the multiplayer as it's much more entertaining and challenging.

There are quite a few different maps in Rocket League. Each one looks amazing and colourful, with quite a bit of background detail which isn't a suprise due to it being made on Unreal Engine 3. Despite all the activity going on in the match, performance was never an issue. This game runs rather smooth for what it is.

There are different types of cars, all of which are fully customizable, ranging from colours to patterns to wheels etc. You can unlock these different customizations from completing matches. Not to mention, there's plenty of dlc that add different cars and customization items, that have quite reasonable price tags.

Rocket League is one of those games where you can loose track of time playing it, and I'm glad I replayed it after months of it sitting around in my library. It's highly addicting and I can see why it's so popular. It also has such an amazing soundtrack that plays in the background of the main menu, with some really memorable songs. If you have spare money, I'd definitely say this is worth it, a near flawless game. The DLC seems quite reasonable as well.

Pros
- Highly addicting
- Amazing detail
- Highly customizable
- Great performance
- Amazing soundtrack

Cons
- Problems with keyboard controls

score in your own goal when playing with friends

steal speedboost while driving in circles and do nothing else.

call every enemy goal a ''lucky'' goal,

see a friend go for the ball and make a possible goal, drive in advance and give the ball a slight nudge and steal the goal.

play goalkeeper and cuss at your friends for not making 1 goal for 4 minutes, then go out of your goal to help them and enemy scores

so many ways to troll,
supports ps4 controller completely! just plug and use

10/10 - I Hate Racing Games, I Hate Soccer Games; I LOVE Them Together!

I never like reviewing games that everyone has played but I must check this off the list and get it done! Rocket Leauge is one of the most impressive games to come out in the last few years in my humble opinion. The replay value is nuts; you can keep playing almost indefinitely without getting bored. There is a pretty big learning curve but once you get the hang of things the rewards are great!

This game is a soccer game but instead of sending troops into battle you send 34 cars into the arena! What could possibly make this better?! How about strapping rockets onto the back of your ride! There is a great deal of skill involved but even if you suck you will have tons of fun. I have worked my way from easy to hard on single player and I felt like my skills were pretty solid, winning most matches. I quickly realized though I’m still not that good; other players are always better and the difference in skill levels are vast! So don’t be discouraged when you start getting whooped on multiplayer!

Overall, this is a real gem! Make sure you computer is strong enough for multiplayer because it will definitely use more resources. You can often find this game for about $15 now so lookout for that deal!

This isn't just a game. This a lecture from Psyonix.

A lecture on designing an extremelly fun and addicting game.
A lecture on building a high quality and very well optimized game.
A lecture on mantaining a multiplayer game running all around the world and working smoothly across differente platforms.

And more important though incredibly rare these days: A lecture on charging the right price, for the right amount of content with the right quality standard.

As I lifted myself up from the crusted earth bellow, I realized my grim mistake.
I left the comfortable region in which a keeper should plant himself firmly.
In the distance I saw my companions on the offensive, rushing back to help me in vain.
It was in that moment that I saw it. I would very soon miss the ball and cause my team great pain.

My thoughts were of all the other games, in those which I’ve made the very same mistake.
Yet the desire to one day succeed was strong and I could not help myself to that leap.
As the ball flew passed me, In that direction that I wished it not to. I felt as if death had gripped me.

I’ve let my comrades down, failed them and taken a selfish action for a benefit that could only be my own. As the ball graciously embraced the deep fathoms of the net, I was met with the taunts and suggestions of my sexuality. I brushed them off, as a knight brush of the lives he takes in the battlefield.

The strange thing is: That I would do it all over again, for one day I will fly through the air like a majestic winged shape, and one day I will hit that ball. My friends will cheer and my enemies will tremble, for thus my rank will be great.

I've got to say, for a multiplayer game, the matchmaking takes the fun right out of it. If you start winning, they place you against players multiple levels above you, thus keeping you from progressing and to a certain degree it sucks the fun right out of it. I've played it for all seasons now and the way winning streaks are handled now just ruins the fun of the game (to me). I don't want to grind again hellaciously difficult players because I had the audacity to win twice.

I really, really like this game, but it feels like the fun has been taken out of it. It's just a chore now.

Rocket League is one of my most recommended games for steam users as it is is just a necessity. It is one of those games that must be part of any collection even with it being relatively new still, and has amazing replayability.
Even with around 250 hours in game, I still feel experienced enough to say that with a mixture of gameplay styles and techniques to try such as aerials; it makes the game much more fun than it appears at first view. It's not just a demolition derby football game, it has a diverse set of mechanics which makes it differ from any other game and unique in it's own way.
It does help to play with friends, but playing by yourself is also just as good. Playing with friends means funny muck ups and great goals are even better as you get to share them with people who are enjoying the game as much as you, and makes for great experiences, but by yourself is just as good sometimes.
The concept behind the game is so simple yet can be difficult to master when compared with footage with really good players who harness their car's ability to move in different ways for the advantage, but then that is just more reason to play the game to become better and learn how to score goals in different ways.
