New Vox update is out and available on Steam. Introducing the character two handed stance and also new idle animations for the player and NPCs.

Coming just around the corner is more content and the new biomes that our voxel artist Zach has been working on and teasing on Twitter for a long time. Lookg forward to these new biomes coming to Vox in the not too distant future.

Lots more included in this update so here are the full patch notes are as follows:

New Features:

  • Change experience label text colour to match other HUD text.
  • Diffrent crosshair types.
  • Allow HUD Graphics and crosshair type options menu pulldowns.
  • Make arrows explode on impact, no longer pass through targets.
  • Make initial world loading happen from player origin.
  • Improve the collision detection efficiency for NPCs, Player and enemies.
  • Keep a cache of the grid chunk that we are currently in.
  • Don't check for chunk block position if we are already in the cached grid chunk.
  • Better item and block particle chunk collision checking - more efficient.
  • Update chunk foundation checking to be less frequent.
  • Reduce the render radius of scenery in the world.
  • Stop players from getting stuck halfway up stepping up a world block.
  • Reduce movement velocity when stepping up a block.
  • New animations for duel wield swords.
  • Better sword attack animations.
  • Sword duel wield combo attack.
  • Better idle states and animations for the player.
  • Breathing and looking around animations.
  • Set proper idle stance when entering or exiting first person mode.

  • Add an overhead marrker for enemies to signal target mode can be activated.
  • Add target mode activation when in follow cam.
  • Also allow enemy overhead marker to appear in non-follow cam mode. (but not first person mode)
  • Don't allow mimics to be targetted unless they are aggro, harder to spot.
  • Add arrow to crafting recipe for standard crafting from inventory.

Bugfixes:
  • Make sure minetrack ramps can be crafted.
  • Safety and sanity checking on block array access.
  • Fix regrowth boots spawning grass and plants - uninitialized var.
  • NULL check for player pointer in scenery manager.
  • Fix fullscreen mode. Remove window borders and frame.
  • Fix wand for new attack type code, not continuously called attack().
  • Clear NPC companions when we quit or enter new game.
  • Make sure we still render the background if the HUD components havent been removed yet for enemy health.
  • Fix for world chunk and items loading from file.

Vox v0.52 hotfix

Hey there,

A couple of bugs were found in yesterdays v0.51 build, mostly concerning the 'create custom character' functionality. Since this is a major feature for Vox and something that should be working 100% of the time, these issues have been hotfixed for v0.52.

Full patch notes below:

New Features:
  • Fireballs and wand shots now set enemies on fire.
  • ncrease fire and poison damage on monsters.
  • Alchemy table is now created via the crafting bench.
  • Add health and mana potion crafting to alchemy table.
  • Stoneskin potion effect makes you temporarily immune to attacks.
  • Add crafting animation for the player.

Bugfixes:
  • Fix for chest interactions with proximity to player
  • Modify and fix the stoneskin potion animation.
  • Fix for bat sonar shots that were not exploding or being erased properly.
  • Fix for custom character creation saving, when editing multiple body parts in one go.
  • Create quests for NPS in all world indexes.

Features

Vox features a completely customization in-game voxel engine that is used to power all the content in the game, this means everything from characters, monsters, items, weapons, flowers, trees and even the world itself is all made from the same basic voxel objects. This means that as a player you are able to edit and customize all of these items using the in-game 'voxel editor'. Don't like the look of the fancy new sword you have just looted? That's fine just open it up in the voxel editor and change it to how you want it to look! You can also decorate your house and the world with as much custom scenery as you like all made using the very same voxel editor. All the objects and content in Vox is there for you to play around with and customize to your heart's content.

Main features of Vox:
  • Full 100% character creation. Use preset parts, or completely build a character from scratch, block by block.
  • Generate dynamic and random worlds that are fully destructible, every single block can be edited.
  • Different and distinct world biomes: forest, jungle, desert, snowy mountains, tundra, floating islands, graveyard, frozen wasteland, and more planned...
  • Weapon/item/equipment customization.
  • 'Zelda' style 3D targeting and combat camera lock-on system.
  • Play in first person or 3rd person camera modes.
  • Mining and world exploration to find hidden treasures.
  • Advanced rendering shaders including deferred rendering, SSAO, shadows, dynamic lighting, depth of field.
  • Villages with NPCs and a questing system.
  • Crafting system.
  • Character progression and leveling system.

As Vox is still in alpha expect these features to change and more functionality to be added as the game progresses during development. Może ta gra naywa się jak mój pierworodny nick to nie jest tak doskonała ;P Możliwe, że ta gra ma potencjał, ale twórcy tego nie wykorzystują, ja nie wiem co oni robią z tą grą. Bardzo rzadkie update z fixami, które do tego nie naprawiają głównych błędów. Gra jest mało zoptymalizowana i często nie doładowuje świata do końca. Mam nadzieję, że wkońcu się obudzą i zaczną robić, ale narazie jest to gra średnio do pogrania. To taka gra jak te inne co próbują "podrabiać" Minecrafta.

NOTICE: This game is a work in progress. In buying it you are investing in further development, which you will benefit from as the game is updated as certain development milestones are reached. Being an Early Access title expect random crashes and bugs. Ignore all neagative reviews complaining about the bugs, apparently some people don't understand what Early Access means.

Vox as its title suggests, is a voxel-based sandbox game in the same category as Infiniminer and Minecraft. The game uses a more rastarized art style as apposed to the more blocky style of Minecraft. The game engine uses modern shader effects and lighting in ways Minecraft doesn't without a GLSL Mod. Where Vox differentiates itself from Minecraft is its focus on adventure and role-playing. Instead of starting the game as one character which you cutomize with skins, you create a new character the way you would in most other RPGs and give that character a name. You then create the world you want to enter and you're given some control over the biomes and overall size of the worlds you create.

Each new game starts you out in a town populated by named NPCs. Chests with loot litter the nearby countryside, whcih gives you some nice starting gear. Some of the chests are monsters, so be aware of this when looting them. Combat uses a Zelda-style lockon which helps in aiming your attacks, especially when using the bow and arrow. Sound effects at the moment during combat are minimal, though this may change throughout the development cycle of the game.

Vox has a fairly detailed crafting system which has some similarities to Minecraft, but goes a few steps further and also allows you to make improvements to certain times like tools and weapons. Like Minecraft you smelt ores you've harvested into bars which you then use to craft items. You can also harvest plants and harvest wood. You can also edit any item in your inventory at virtually any time.

Sound wise, Vox is baren with just a single repeating upbeat tune that drones on during the day, and a more melodic and slow tune that plays at night. Day and night cycles go by rather quickly, hopefully this will be fixed, and nighttime doesn't seem to change the game much. Its not like Minecraft where nightime becomes hazardous for the player if you haven't built shelter. This may also change in the future. I'm hoping for more variety in the music rather than the SNES-esque tune that plays now. Over time it can become annoying and you'll find yourself turning the music volume down most times.

Overall, Vox holds immense promise so I recoomend that anyone who likes Minecraft please spend some pocket to get this game and help contribute its further development. Additionally, I much give the developer kudos for making the engine for this game open-source. We need to see more of this.

30 April 2014 - release of v0.50.

I'm changing my review. Previously I was saying I believed in the developer and that he would get the game in a good state eventually but it's buggy and crash-prone now so only buy it if you want to support the dev, not to play it because you can't.

Well scratch that. The new version today locked up my computer when I first entered the world so I had to use the reset button on the PC, causing me to lose some unsaved work.

There have been too many versions; too much time has passed. I no longer think the developer is capable of creating a game that doesn't crash. I'm not wasting any more of my time on this rubbish or defending it to people, telling them it will eventually be ok. I don't think it will.

Do not buy this game. It crashes all the time. I do not think it will ever be fixed despite fairly frequent updates.

Steer clear of anything this developer makes.

He's fixed the problem where framerates start to take a dump 24/7. Well at least it fixed for me.... Still has room for improvement but fixing the frames was a good first priority. Need more things to do and gameplay still needs improvement instead of slapping monsters all day.

This game is nice! It's like a combination of minecraft, cubeworld and a mmo game. I'm having problems with it crashing some times and some small bugs, but it's still in progress so I'm not complaining about it. I like the part very much were you can be as much creative as you want to when you are making the character, but also that you ingame can choose between watching your whole character while running around and killing, or just through the characters eyes.

I'm looking forward to see how this game will become much futher and I do not regret the buying!

Zdaję sobie sprawę, że to dopiero wczesna wersja gry, ale jeszcze wcześniejsza wersja (sprzed greenlitu) jako-tako chodziła mi poprawnie, teraz natomiast po kilku update'ach praktycznie nie da się w to grać. Skopana optymalizacja skutkuje kilkoma klatkami na sekundę. Poza tym, możnaby się przyczepić też do tego, że to kolejny minecraft, kolejny voxlowy FPP z elementami walki, eksploracji i budowania. Na chwilę obecną: meh.
