“is the kind of game that many will look over because they think they’ve played things like it hundreds of times before. It’s not. This is a project filled with incredibly smart puzzle design and an important message at its core. Anyone who absentmindedly picked it up during a sale should do themselves a favor and play right now. If you don’t yet own it, then definitely consider making a purchase in the near future. Nihilumbra is a thoroughly enjoyable experience that will stick with you. (4.5/5)”

“The whole game is great, but for me the presentation takes Nihilumbra from being a fun and clever indie game to something really special. Its presentation rivals games like Braid and Limbo. Everything looks hand drawn and a bit ethereal, a mix between a Tim Burton movie and a Jhonen Vasquez comic. The visuals are complemented by an orchestral score that’s just Danny Elfman enough, and narration that is very well voiced for the story. The tone of the game is serious, and the presentation really supports that rather than undermining it and making it come off as silly.”

“Nihilumbra shines brightest here (Void Mode). Where the story merely hints at the potential of behind its mechanics, Void Mode demonstrates their genius. It brings out Nihilumbra’s best levels, testing your mettle while retaining the game’s penchant for easily understood puzzles. The mode tests you without employing opaque logic, making you reexamine how you approach problem solving. Plus, there’s even a couple story hooks that bring some additional closure, thus sweetening the deal. (4.5/5)”

Discover the beautiful world of Nihilumbra and join Born on his adventure to find himself whilst trying to escape from his inevitable curse.
Born was created from the absolute nothingness: The Void. But somehow he separates himself from the black emptiness and appears in the world. This is where his long odyssey begins, in which he will learn how to use the colors around him to gain powerful abilities and transform the world.

However, his experiences come at a high price. The Void must be one. It seeks to reclaim him and will never stop chasing him, destroying everything in its path along the way.
To survive, Born will have to condemn the earth he walks to its inevitable obliteration by The Void...

Advise: Nihilumbra has been designed in a way that everyone can enjoy its story, even without previous experience with puzzle games. However, players seeking for a challenge will find it on the second half of the game: the Void Mode.

Got this during the summer sale, and gotta say that it really does nto deserve the "very positive" that its overall rating gives it, and especially not worth the 8 bucks. I'll list some pros and cons real quick.

Pros: -interesting concept, both in game mechanics and in worldbuilding

cons: -scribbly graphics, not interesting to look at
-a tendency to fill a level with mostly easy puzzles, then one impossible one out of nowhere
-very uncreative enemy names, designs, etc.
-a narrator that's both irritating, refuses to stop holding your hand throughout the game, refuses to just shut up and let the player play, badly written monologue, and no one can tell if he's rooting for you, or trying to get you to give up.
-poorly executed central game mechanic, introducing unintuituve controls

All in all, wonderful concept, poor execution, takes itself too seriously. 2/10

A great artistic game. You are Born, a Void being running away from the Void, wondering what to do. In your journey to get away from the Void, you pickup up 5 colours, Blue, Green, Brown, Red and Yellow. These colours give you interesting powers when you paint with them and allow you to escape the Void. However, you inadvertently destroy 5 major locations as the Void chases after and there is a New Game Plus that allows you to right everything wrong.

Conclusion : A must play. It will remind you of games such as Portal 2 and Max:The Curse of Brotherhood.

PROS
1. Novel Monsters
Klimeth
Custodiss
Laser Cannon Void Creatures
Skelegoths
Flower Monster
Colour Absorber Flower

2. New Game Plus
You get more stages after "completing" the game.

3. Novel Powers
Green makes surfaces bouncy
Red makes them burn
Blue makes them icy and slippery
Brown makes them sticky and quiet
Yellow transmits electricity
Void destroys the colours

CONS
1. Linear Game
Well, there is only 1 way to go, right? What choice do I have?

2. New Game Plus Too Hard
Wow. I need to watch Youtube to solve this.

It has a great story that makes you dive in. The story has some kind of sorrow in it. The Void mode is sometimes as hard as hell but solving puzzels makes you enjoy a lot. A must have game for indie and platform lovers.

A clever puzzle-platformer based on "colors" mechanic -- think gels from Portal 2. First half of the game feels to easy, but the difficulty builds up as you reach the "Void" chapters -- those bring both some brain-teasers and tricky action sequences. The visual style is pleasant, and the story is simple, but touching. Not a masterpiece, but a strong, solid example of the genre.

Underrated magic

This game is amazing, really. It's a small life, which the player lives with the Born. A life full of danger, fear, regret and melancholy.
When the game takes you by the hand the only thing you can say is "WOW! this world is beautiful!" And the game does not release you until the final credits. And the only thing you can say after all is "What have I done, I have to fix it ..."

I knew nothing about this game at the moment I bought it. Worth every penny, true hidden gem. If you like logic platformers which don`t require cat-like reflexes Nihilumbra is the game for you. Don`t play it when you are down, it`s a bit depressing.

Escaping from the void, trying to become more than you are and risking the world you seek in order to do so. This is the story of Nihilumbra, a puzzle based 2D platformer from Beautifun Games.

The game follows a vey narrative series of events travelling from the cold Icy hills through the forest, the desert, the volcano and finally to the city. Each location brings with it new challenges and a new skill to brave them. These skills come in the forms of colours, paints that can be spread around the environment at will. The first colour you obtain is blue, allowing the creation of ice. Then comes the green followed by the brown, creating bouncy and sticky surfaces respectively. From the volcano comes red, the ability to burn some things and supercharge others. Finally there is yellow, the ability to create conductive lines to transfer power from energy sources to unpowered machines. It's the combination of all of these that will let you progress and aid in your escape from the void.

The gameplay is well established as you play, with a "tutorial" for each new colour. The levels are relatively easy on the first play through but after finishing once there is a new "Void" version of the levels, being more difficult and involved. The controlling of the colours is intuitive and easy to do, and if you make a mistake it's just as easy to undo your moves.

The visual style is fantastic with detailed painted backgrounds and foreground objects that have a parallax effect. When applying colours it is always easy to distinguish. The soundtrack is one that is extremely well fitting and only adds to the atmosphere. The voice over is a crucial part of the game and it wouldn't be the same without it. The tone of voice is one that makes the player feel safe while traveling and discovering.

Overall the game is solid and everything seems to work as intended, some sections seem to be reliant on trial and error. There is a large difficulty curve between finishing the first playthrough and starting the second, it could have eased into it more.

It's has a good bang for your buck and the only thing I would like to see is a level editor with steam workshop integration. Other than that it's a great game.

One of my all-time favorite games. Nihilumbra is a side-scrolling puzzle game, where you control the lone protoganist, Born, guiding him through five varied realms. Born is alone, too- aside from the enemies in the game, which are few and far between, every landscape you travel through seems abandoned, deserted. It adds an apocalyptic feel to an already stark and melancholy game.

Born starts out with very few tricks up his sleeve- he can jump and move inexorably to the right, and the enemies he encounters are deadly. As you progress, though, you pick up new skills that allow you to alter the landscape around you- colors you can paint on the world to allow you to slide, bounce, stick, and more.

There's really two parts to this game- the story mode, which is relatively straight-forward but still retains a challenge, and the mode you unlock after beating the story, which is devilishly hard. The controls seemed fluid to me, though they take some getting used to- one hand moves Born, while the mouse uses the various colors to guide him along. The game rarely rushes you, and when it does, it's considerate enough to provide enough checkpoints to prevent too much repetition.

This seems to be Beautifun's Freshman game for the PC, and I am definitely looking forward to where they'll go from here.

Puzzle platformer, slow-paced, not very difficult. Main mechanic (besides moving your character) is altering game physics by "painting" 5 different colours (with different abilities, which are unlocked during main campaign) on almost any platform.

Campaign is short (~3 hours) which is basically a preparation for the harder mode (The Void, ~2x harder and longer), which is unlocked after beating the game for the first time. In this mode, you'll need to employ platforming skills and brain cells a bit more. Good thing is, almost any level can be finished with different approach (using different colours which adds to replayability). Beating the hard mode will unlock a change which will give you the reason to put few more hours into the main campaign from the beginning (this feature completely change the mood of the game, which is dark/depressing by its setting).

Steam achievements are not very difficult, most of them will be unlocked naturally by going through both playthroughs. Some requires higher platforming skill and exploration, but nothing impossible for 100%.

Fair price, decent length, good game. I was pleasantly surprised. Totally recommended!

Ideas+motivation=indie games.

And Nihilumbra is a good way to prove indie games can have a space on the AAA games on the market

Colors, unnending questions, and a desesperate pursuit to answer the most enigmatic question of yourself:

"Why are you here?"

Our journey begin with "Born" an unknown creature made by somehow on the Void, our character escape from it, after that you have to many question to face. To prove your existance.

This being adapt himself with a family and preferably form. A"scarecrown" (similar to a human form).

The narrator is so amazing , i consider it like a character on the story, because he is always there, he is always saying something about you, your enemy, your background, questioning yourself or giving you clues, annnything.....

The colors are an essential fact throught the story, a new color = a new power, a way to understand this new and strange world. Every single one has a purpose to help you. You would notice you eventually will need to mix them to get it done.

The OST is well done, specially on the void pursuit.

Negative things:

-Short: 3 hours to complete the main storyline (but it have a void mode to replay the story)

-The puzzles aren´t very convoluted, fews are going to stop you and make you think for a moment.

This game has the word "originality" in every part of it, that is the most remarkable of the game. Is a philosophical game with a clearly message waiting in the end. Games like this makes you faith on indie games increases.

NOTE: Don't be fooled by the in-game time Steam is showing for me -- I played my first two times through on my DRM-free copy :)

Disclaimer: The game does require some hand-eye coordination and patience. If you have neither, you probably won't get very far ;)

Basic options include choice of seven languages and separate sliders for Music, Sound, and Voice, plus mono or stereo sound and mouse sensitivity. The game automatically adjusted itself to my widescreen, and graphic options include choice of screen resolution, Enhanced color effects, HD textures, VSync, or Automatic settings (which was my preference)

As with most games of this type, you don't just save at any time -- there are save points. Just touch the globe -- the small lights (aka checkpoints) that will "forgive your mistakes" -- to save your progress. These are nicely spaced, so don't worry!

Unlike most of these games is that we have multiple profiles to choose from (three of them,) so we can switch profiles if more than one person wants to play the game at once.

If you hit Esc. during gameplay, you'll see a button that says "Resume Game" and three symbols: A compass, a swirl, and some gears. Clicking on the gears will take you to the game settings, the middle button (the swirl) will take you back to your last checkpoint (you can cancel if you didn't mean to hit that button!) and the compass will take you back to the maps page, and from there you can get back to the main menu by clicking on the arrow at the bottom right of the page.

Where to start? Well, I guess at the beginning would be best!

The game very clearly shows us how to play, without being annoying in any way. The instructions are seamlessly introduced by our narrator, who stays with us throughout our journey, giving us new information and telling us the story. What a wonderful voice they chose, and such an interesting way to progress the story!

The controls are basic to start with -- the arrow keys or W-A-S-D and space bar to jump. I recommend using W-A-S-D, as later in the game it's nearly impossible to continue to use the arrow keys whilst managing your colors! As we progress, we discover colors which allow us to affect the world around us. The game teaches us to use these colors very clearly, so don't worry! Each color has a different effect, and I don't want to ruin any surprises, so I'll just mention the first two: The only color we have at the very beginning is purple, which is unusable until we discover other colors, for it allows us to erase any colors we place or find. Soon we will learn how to use blue, which creates an icy surface where it is placed. NOW we can use the purple, if we so desire. ;) Each world area we visit teaches a new color ability, and all told, we have five worlds and five colors: Blue, brown, green, yellow, and red (though not in that order.)

So how do we use our colors? It's really very easy. In the top right corner is an orb showing your current color. Click on it to open up your color palette (see the first picture in post #1 for a visual.) Choose whatever color you need for the current situation you're facing. To place the color, simply hold down your mouse button and swipe the cursor over the surface you want to coat.

You have a limited amount of color to use, and sometimes it's necessary to remove the color you've placed to complete the current puzzle. To do so you COULD click on the color palette, choose purple, and click-and-drag the areas where you want to remove it... OR, you can do it the easy way and simply right-click-and-drag. :D

During my second time through the main story I discovered that we can easily and quickly change our color by simply using the scroll wheel on the mouse! Whee~! Happy day!

The experience is really the driving force of the game. It's one thing to watch someone play it, and something else to actually sit back and do it for yourself. Take your time. Discover. Learn. Let yourself be immersed in this beautiful and deadly world. You could power through all the scenes and ignore all of that, but you'd really be missing out.

The primary focus of the game is discovery. Find your way through the worlds without being damaged or reclaimed by the Void. Nihilumbra is very story-driven, and for the most part, we have plenty of time explore and figure out how to solve the puzzles. Towards the end of each world, the Void will advance, leaving us with only a certain amount of time to get through the final screens. The use of the scroll wheel to change colors makes a big difference in the difficulty level, but even if you're doing the point-and-click method (which I was the first time through!) it's still doable.

Five colors, five worlds... Before I knew it, I came to 'The End' and was watching the credits. *cry* I felt so wistful, wishing that it hadn't ended so soon, wishing that there was more... Two hours is all it took (the second time 'round,) yet I felt that it was still worth the asking price.

. . . except that it wasn't 'The End' at all! It turned out that this was only the beginning of my journey in Nihilumbra, and the true challenge still lay before me. Now the 'Void Mode' was unlocked, and the focus of the game changes. We've finished with the main story, but still have much to do! Every single save point from the main game is now a complex puzzle that needs to be solved, and all puzzles must be completed to have true closure for the story. There are no save points during these puzzles, and I can tell you for certain that you will die -- over and over again -- before you're able to figure things out. The story-driven, take-your-time adventure is over, and is now filled with one complex, mind-bending puzzle after another. Though I had a couple of "how the heck am I supposed to get past that?" moments, I was able to get through the main story without even thinking about about looking at a walkthrough. The Void gameplay, though? I couldn't figure out the very first screen! Mahaha~ I admit that I've had to look a couple of times, but I've been finding great joy in figuring things out on my own whenever I can.

Am I finished with the game? Not even close, but I'm enjoying every moment I spend playing. I can't even begin to tell you how beautifully-done this game is. The combination of story with narration are poignant and thought-provoking, leaving us with a lot to consider, and I found it equally moving my second time through (the main story -- still working on the Void section!) The music is beautiful, though I found it better to have the music and sound effects half the volume of the narration. For me, it was the perfect balance. I really loved everything about the game, and I can't recommend it highly enough! Two thumbs up!

One of the best platformer games out there, Grab it guys!
This game is like real life, you start as a baby and learn the process of life each level while being chased or haunted by the void.
In each level you will learn new things and you need to apply what you just learn to complete the level.
The story itself is a life lesson for each and everyone of us.

I really love the narration, music and the artwork.
Really a beautiful and fun game. Thank you Beautifun Games.
