Game updated

Hi all!

It's been a while. We have updated the game with some performance fix.

As some of you might have known, we are developing Dusty Raging Fist currently. We have moved away totally from Torque 2D, which was used to develop Dusty Revenge. Dusty Raging Fist is being developed in Unity3D, and this resulted in the whole game being re-built. The 1 thing we brought over was the animation tool. We have been optimizing it for the past year as we develop DRF. Whenever it's being optimized for Unity3D, we tried to re-implement in Torque2D, but with mixed results, thus we aren't able to improve on Dusty Revenge. Our latest attempt seems to be stable and have yielded positive results.

We have tested it internally and it is running better. But being a small indie team, we aren't able test it as extensively as we want. Do let us know of the problems you run into in the forums.

Thanks!

“The art style and old western feel of the story had me enjoying myself immensely. And the combat was nice and challenging, even on normal mode. All in all, a wonderful way to take out the stresses of a normal working day by exploding, shooting and beating the bejeebles out of anything that had the audacity to appear on-screen.”
8/10 – Calm Down Tom

“Dusty Revenge is a fast paced 2D action platformer that stays true to its fighting genre and strengthens the shoot and beat ‘em up style of gameplay.”
9.5/10 – Capsule Computers

“I had fun with Dusty Revenge and think fans of side scrolling beat ‘em ups or modern action games like Devil May Cry will as well.”

What others say about Dusty Revenge:
Destructoid
“All in all, it feels like a condensed 2D Devil May Cry 3, which is a great thing, and shows that PDDesignStudio really has a knack for designing technical action.”

“All along the way, the art is stunning, breaking the boundaries of an indie studio and venturing into major release territory.”

Jay is Games
“The real juicy parts of the game take a little time to kick in (why isn’t the bear with the massive gun there from the beginning?!), but once they do you’ll realize this is much more than a simple sidescrolling punchfest.”

Mash Those Buttons
“It’s got a huge move set, simple attacks to learn, beautiful stages, great enemy and level design, and a fun, unique soundtrack. It does a lot of work to keep the game interesting and varied for its players, something very few brawlers manage to pull off effectively.”

I don't usually enjoy these kind of games but this one really stood out and even though I only had 20 minutes or so to game I ended up spending more than an hour and was late for work as a result. It's hard to describe this game. A sidescroller tekken? I was having an amazing time trying to figure out all the combos and have not had any problems with hit boxes or the bosses. I really like the style too. Thumbs up from me.

An awesome sidecroller with stunning artwork and sounds. Loved the boss fights. Especially after learning a few interesting combos that don't just involve mashing the buttons until your fingers go numb. Loved various added elements such as sniping etc. Overall a great game. Recommended!

I'll recomend but only to people who are really into this type of game and can deal with flawed game
Love this game but at the same time hate it ,.,
It just really needs some work,.
When it comes to the bosses it just feels too random,.Hit boxxes just seem to change for no reason and finding a pattern to beat them is not really clear.
Some of the platforming is great but then it has elements of old Nes games where you just randomly get killed.,and unless you died already you are not going to see it coming or have a reaction time,.
The game dosen't seem to run that great seems laggy .,
It looks great and is lots of fun
I wish there was more focus on the combat and less on other things.,
There are a lot of great ideas but they all need a little polish

The single-plane side-scrolling beat-'em-up is alive and well. There aren't exactly a plethora of them, but the ones that are available are quite good, with Dragon's Crown, Dust: An Elysian Tale and Shank being some of the best in the field. It's not a crowded genre, so there's always room for an upstart to surprise people, and that's what PD Design Studio did with Dusty Revenge, its first major title for the PC.

Dusty Revenge is set in a mix between the Old West and Steampunk/Electrical Age populated by anthropomorphic animals. You play the role of Dusty, a bunny that wants to leave behind his tumultuous past and settle down on the farm with his love, Daisy. Things don't go as planned. One night, Dusty returns to find his farmhouse burning and the love of his life dead. Three shadowy figures leave him with a scar as they flee the crime scene. After regaining consciousness, Dusty sets out for revenge.

The story is simple in its setup and maintains that simplicity throughout, even if it sometimes gets a little heavy-handed. There are some expected story turns, such as allies teaming up with the hero because of their own agendas against a mastermind named Kraven. There aren't any twists in the tale, and the characters are one-dimensional. Story was never a big thing in this genre, and the game doesn't try to buck that trend. The story can get surprisingly dark, though. Despite the use of anthropomorphic animals in the cast, the plot can get quite gruesome, with blood splatter and characters' heads getting ripped off. It isn't extremely graphic, but the game isn't meant for kids, despite the appearance of the cast.

Dusty has three types of attacks that use different weapons. His light attacks use his fists and feet. Strong attacks utilize his scythe, which has slower execution but increased attack power and range. Distance attacks let him cause some damage with dual pistols or a shotgun. Both the light and strong attacks transition well into combos, which expand rather nicely when you level up. If you need extra help, you can call on one of your two compatriots. The big bear Rondel launches rockets to hit large mobs of enemies and break down touch barriers. The hound McCoy uses a sniper rifle to hit switches, free boxes from their cables and shoot down enemies.

The combat makes the game enjoyable. The flashy combos add some spark to the combat, and the somewhat uncomplicated system makes it easy for players to execute great-looking combos without learning difficult button sequences. Combos are air- and ground-based, giving the game a Devil May Cry flavor without resorting to 3-D. The game also does a good job of balancing platforming and fighting, and it even throws in some light puzzle aspects for good measure. Coupled with a good checkpoint system, adequate difficulty and a decent amount of gameplay, and you have the recipe for a game that is fun and worthwhile for genre fans.

Unfortunately, the good, varied combat and interesting boss fights are dragged down by other elements. The combat shows some flaws when you use any of the assists. The automatic blocking doesn't always activate, resulting in some free hits for enemies. Foes also don't get hurt by their own ordnance, so you'll get shot out of your attacks. Some hitboxes are improperly aligned with the sprites to the point where attacks pass through an enemy without damaging him or her. The camera also has a tendency to not cooperate, since it's a bit dynamic instead of sticking you in the middle. This becomes problematic when platforming is introduced in the latter half of the game and the camera stays put instead of moving with you; you'll be forced to make blind leaps in order to progress.

Perhaps the worst part of Dusty Revenge is the execution of the controls. While the light and heavy attacks are fine, shooting your guns isn't as smooth because both firearms are handled with the same button. Tapping the button makes you use your pistols while holding it down makes you use your shotgun. Far too often in the heat of combat, you'll shoot your pistols when you wanted to fire a shotgun blast, and vice versa. Opening chests is also annoying because a button needs to be held down for the action, and the accompanying animation makes the whole thing feel slow. You can also accidentally cancel the action by not holding down the button until the animation is complete.

Graphically, Dusty Revenge is quite beautiful. The character sprites, while not exceptionally large, are very detailed. The scars on enemies, grimaces when someone gets hit, and the gritting of teeth when shooting a shotgun are all visible and look great. The animations are also quite smooth, with rarely a hitch during transitions. The backgrounds are also nicely detailed, and the use of a watercolor-style of cel-shading adds to the visual flair. There's a lack of any real particle effects, though. Smoke is rarely used, and even then, it looks simple when compared to the other visuals. Laser barriers simply fade instead of pulsate, making you think it's part of the background instead of something lethal, and downed barriers and platforms simply fall or fade away without any ceremony. When compared to the rest of the game, the lack of spectacular effects makes the title feel a little blander.

Unlike the graphics, the sound doesn't fare quite as well. There are only two voices in the game, both of which only play during cut scenes. While Dusty's father sounds fine in his brief segment, Dusty lacks the expected emotion, considering the recent events in his life. He doesn't sound forced, but his inflections never change. It also doesn't help that he sounds like a gruff version of Jean-Claude Van Damme. The sound effects also vary wildly in their quality. While anything coming from Dante and friends sounds fine, enemy effects fall under three categories: they'll play fine, they'll play but lack any power behind the effect, or they'll simply go silent on certain actions. You get the feeling that the money ran out when they were working on the audio because explosions don't have the same punch as a shotgun blast, and sword slashes and machine gun fire are completely silent. On the bright side, even though the music doesn't match what's expected from a Western theme, it's rather good and is a nice accompaniment to the action.

Dusty Revenge has lots of potential and looks very eye-catching. The combat system is satisfying enough despite some cheap enemy tactics, and the boss fights are quite good. However, the camera/HUD issues and the limited use of sound is disappointing, and collision issues and bugs pop up occasionally. The varying quality on the controls can infuriate, especially during the platforming segments in the latter half of the game. For the price, the experience is still worth it but only if you've already played the better titles in the genre.

an admirable attempt to make a devil may cry sidescroller, which is so subtly ripped off that the rabbit's dad is named dante. you can also play as a fox lady, i guess? they're the same thing, and co-op is local only which sucks. but it's fun. do some sick combos, bullet juggle an armadillo, blow some rhinos up with a mortar. it's good.

if the animal designs bother you there is, amazingly, an option to replace everyone in the levels with humans, though you're still stuck with the animals in the video scenes.

I played it locally with a friend. It was overall a funny game for a few sessions. Bugs and imprecise collision detection during jumps on plattforms occuring all over the game. Sometimes the screen get stuck and we had to start over or one player died and the other also suddenly died, this is something that you dont expect from a coop Edition. Except the first boss the further encouters were plain and only button smashing, only the last boss had interesting twist.
After all it was a consistent game with furry characters and nothing seemed out of place. The Artwork was fantastic, very good and fitted nicely in the scenery! The idea with the support characters added a nice extra mechanic to the gameplay.
I would recommend the game to everyone with a friend for local coop but get it in a bundle or with discount because it has nearly not replay value.

PS: Anaconda boss was way to strong compared to the other ones.

+ Classic beat'em up arcade inspiration with some funny gameplay twists, long easy combos, specials.
+ Max Payne styled cut-scenes and grotesque furry dramah.
- Clunky animation almost like in the 80s.
- Some lags, needs good hardware.

Unresponsive and ♥♥♥♥

btw the coop is ♥♥♥♥ as you can't see anything with the screen full of enemies and your teammate.

the game stopped responding on the second controller midstage(but only on the sprite, it did register on menus)

the game has many FPS dips from 60 t0 maybe even 4 at times(yup my PC is not wooden)

not recommended at all.

Very fun game, the controlls (albeit a little clunky) are fairly smooth. The story is.......not what you would call "original" but entertaining all the while. My main problem with the game is that sometimes some levels drag on for a bit longer than they should, but there are alot of fun combos you can do, the art style is incredible and the support characters are highly entertaining and are oriented into puzzles too. (I have not yet played "co-op" so i cant give any insight pertaining, but based on how smooth the game is i can only guess the multiplayer is too)

This Game is awesome.

You play as a Rabbit seeking revenge. I'll just list the points I like and dont:

+Combo System
+Story is good
+Support system is good and helpful
+requires Skill and not spamming the attack button

-Bugs, still a lot of them
-No damage recovery (As in knockback recovery and whatnot)
-slight input lag
-Crashes occassionally

As for the Bugs of Day one:
=combo Page is faulty
=Crashes for no reason
=Load times' still a ♥♥♥♥♥

I’ll start by stating that this game is truly addictive and captivating.

Why?
I believe many of those who have tried this game had realized that the combo system is pretty well thought out.
1) The number of variations it has is amazing - For each level your character gains, there would be roughly 3 moves to play around with.

2) It easy to pick up - a leveling system was cleverly put in place so that players get to master their current moves and think of ways to use them before leveling up.

The SUPPORT in this game isn’t anything like a cheap bomb clearing the entire screen of enemies. It allows an alternative way to play this game with clever obstacles that require you to use them. Trust me, if you play hard you would definitely use them pretty often.

Boss Fight is a gem. Each of them requires a different set of way to defeat them and discovering how to do so is really rewarding.

The story is immersive and I really like the voice. It’s much better than the older trailers and without doubt, the art is amazing.

What can be improved?
Frame rate gets really unstable sometimes with steam overlay.
Minor bugs can be found here and there
Load screen gets stuck occasionally.

If you are a beat-them up lover you should really try this out.

#Also noted that it is their first release, there are sure to be bugs around but I really like how responsive and active the developers are in dealing with them.

Controls are killing it for me. There's a half second or so delay between my button press and Dusty's action. No way I'm playing a beat'em'up like that.

I wish I could recommend this game, as it has some nice things going for it, but this game simply is not polished enough. I am yet to play this game for more than 15 mins without it crashing or glitching. Every now and then the enemies will just turn into white pixels, which can be a completely jarring experience. The combo system is intriguing as it allows you to air juggle, along with incorporate a number of different weapons in combat. However using the assist character isn't a fine tuned enough feature to use outside of the brief puzzle/platforming parts. The levels, background illustrations and character design are gorgeous and the steam punk feel is fresh and consistent, however sometimes hard to appreciate the manic action on screen. Speaking again on the combat, while it has its flashy moments, its not the most rewarding system. True it packs in a bunch of abilities such as dashing, side rolls, and dives, but battle range from simply pressing one button to beat the crap out of all on screen enemies, to furiously trying to dodge bullets and fight at the same time. I think this game has tons of potential, but it needs some serious updating to be worth it.

Very interesting concept, the voice acting is very good but yet there is something very annoying with this game : bugs. It's crashing, lagging sometimes and the animation is not always as fluent as I'd have expected it to be. But even if there's those bugs (which are able to fixed in the future anyway), this game share a similar gameplay to Dust, just less fluent. But it is still very interesting and worths a shot. Co-op not yet tried, but It's probably pretty nice!

I recommend it, but keep in mind it's not perfect, and if you're searching for a solo adventure with a flawless gameplay of the same style, look after Dust : An Elysian Tail.

Dusty REvenge: co-op i'll start off with the bad. P.S. This is my first review.

Cons.
This game has alot of problems from the Shaky cam; to the framerate dorp when your playing with another person, and finally the voice acting.
Last but not least the fact that you need to download openAL just to get the sound working.
But strangely i have to recommend this game if you can get passed that like i did.

Pros
The Combat is really good but not too easy where it's just buttion mashing.
The cutscenes and art in the levels look really well done.
There's about 20 combos you get by leveling up.
Some good quick thinking plaforming.
Suport characters that are really useful.
Boss rush. Which i record myself doing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzDnxra2vAs&list=UU3X76JzyV18SBqGsVBIz5Mw&index=6
collectactables to unlock art and costumes.
And a pretty good story that starts off small.

Let's not forget this game was 10$ before they made it co-op which was a bad move imo. You don't bring your firends to your house to play on you gaming pc...that what consoles are for. Unless you have poor firends like me who are amazed by and want a gaming PC.

Didnt really enjoy this game, I guess it isnt bad its just the controls are very laggy, and the actual fighting mechanics in the game are pretty poor to say the least. The bosses are forgettablle at best, along with the other creatures throughout the game. The story isnt bad for what it is, and the actual graphics are pretty and colourful, alot of work has gone into the art in this game. The achievements are to easy, taking no effort on my part to complete although I still have one to get and this is the hardest, the boss rush. Collectables also play no part whatsoever. Overall I was expecting something more..... 4.5/10

- Hyvät peli äänet ja musiikki

En arvosta paljoa:

- Tavanomainen tasoloikka

- Brutaali tappeli peli
- Combo taistelu mekanismi
- Pitkävetinen
- Itseään toistava
- Ei Steam cloddy järjestelmää

+ Classic beat'em up arcade inspiration with some funny gameplay twists, long easy combos, specials.
+ Max Payne styled cut-scenes and grotesque furry dramah.
- Clunky animation almost like in the 80s.
- Some lags, needs good hardware.

Stumbled upon this game and I love it. The story is a bit cliche, but maybe it will provide more later in the game. I am around 2/3 through so farm so we'll see. But the game play is fun. The inclusion of the 2 characters add an additional dimension to the game play, a new thing in this genre. The combat system is fluid, I like how I can mix things up. I also like how I am able to evade enemies anytime by rolling or jumping away, even if I am in the middle of a combo.

But hell, it takes a little bit too long to load!

Pros
Combat system is fluid
Lots of combos
Excellent art
Some of the platforming/ puzzle elements is refreshing
Love the additional 2 side characters
The collectibles!

Cons
Loading is longer than most games
Premise of the story is a bit cliche

The great art style of this game is not a good contrast to the stiff combat and unresponsive controls. It is very difficult to get certain combos out without mashing (which is something a polished character action game doesn't have), and the launchers tend to only work sometimes. I could see this being fun with two players, but the combat needs a serious rework before I could recommend it. It is fun when it cooperates, but after a few hours of play, it feels like you're fighting the controls and input lag more than the enemies themselves. I got about halfway through before stopping, but this would be a decent buy during a Steam sale, not at full price unless the control/input issues are improved upon.

Played this on an i3 laptop running win 8 & it was glitchy and crashed as others have said. However, when played on a AMD dual core x64 running win 7 it played smooth & flawlessly...& was a blast to play.Hopefully an update can figure out how to make all platforms play like the AMD because its a GREAT game when you finally get it to play.

Well I like the game as it challenging, yet makes you want to play more...However It crashes sometimes, lags when playing as dusty & glitchy enemies one boss is even literally undefeatable as the boss's health meter won't decay as I hit it. I WOULD recommend it granted if the develepors or someone comes up with a solution as it is very addictive in all.

The animation is questionable, making the game look rather amateur. The music is uninteresting and the game offers to incentive to use most of the combos. Bosses are uninteresting and the game tries to be hilariously edgy while simultaneously allowing the player to glide about using Dusty's ears as a parachute. Overall a weak title. Avoid.
