Reviews

“Each time the protagonist dies, you find yourself coming back with a vengeance, determined to try a new strategy, a different approach to her upbringing. It's borderline addictive. It's also likely to make a monster out of you. By the end of my first successful playthrough, I had summarily butchered everyone who even thought about looking at us funny, forced the princess into a continuous state of docility and lied my way through every social encounter possible. Was it evil? Yes. Was it glorious? Definitely.”
http://indiegames.com/2012/06/review_long_live_the_queen_han.html

“Somehow it never occurred to my princess, whom I’d lovingly crafted into a tense, paranoid warlord, that she shouldn’t empty a box of mysterious mailcandy into her mouth. You would think studying poison and espionage would have saved me from this espionage poison, but instead, a list of other skills, skills I never studied, princess skills, were key to avoiding this fate. I guess that’s the lesson: you can’t build a successful Arya without adding a little Sansa.”
PCGamer

“If you’re the sort who can sink your teeth into a full afternoon of tabletop strategy, you’ll be happy here. Long Live The Queen is a slow-paced, cozy evening kind of game, good for folks who like numbers and critical thinking. And death. Pink frosted, chubby cheeked death.”

About This Game

Rule the world or die trying!

Being a Princess is not an easy job. Being a Queen is even harder. Especially when you're only fourteen years old, and the reason you've inherited the throne is that your royal mother has just met an untimely end.

Now power is up for grabs. You may be the official heir, but much of the country's nobility would love to steal the throne for themselves. Aggressive neighbors will take advantage of any weakness to enlarge their borders at your expense. And that's not even mentioning the magical dangers which are lying in wait...

Can you survive long enough to reach your coronation?

Haha this game, ah little Elodie is just really cute. You are a little princess trying to grow up to become the queen of her own country. Your job is to make sure that Elodie takes the classes that will be able to make sure she gets there which is definatly not as easy as it sounds. There are a looooot of problems that you have no idea are in place. Soo good luck, and long live the queen.

Long live the queen is a super simple but eccentric, Visual novel about a princess who is going to turn the legal adult age in a few weeks. Within these weeks, you could make mistakes that could either take your life, or take your life

Don't be fooled by the cutesy aesthetic, this game is brutal.

Absolutely loved it - there is so much content here for the price. Yes, it made me want to scream with rage at points (death is sudden and omnipresent for poor Elodie) but I kept coming back. I still haven't found all the little narrative twists and turns, and I'm sure it will keep me occupied for a good long while.

The narrative is intriguing (and it kind of has to be considering the potential tedium of the stat-building gameplay) and has everything one could want: namely intrigue, murder, magic and lesbians. There is a lot of depth here, more than is usually present in a visual novel.

Some complaints I've seen centre around the unpredictability, and I will agree that it is frustrating at points when seemingly random stats turn out to be really important. There is a lot of trial and error - despite this I still recommend it.

Slight spoilers ahead.

THINGS I MANAGED TO DO IN THIS GAME:
-Accidentally accepted a marriage proposal.
-Didn't have enough self control to stop myself from eating chocolate, died.
-Vaporzied someone at a competition designed to raise my people's morale.
-Told my personal servant to throw away a gift from a dear friend like a stone cold ♥♥♥♥♥.
-Fell from a tower trying to get a poem that said supposedly lewd things about me.
-Threw a ceremonial scepter at a woman who I ordered executed after she charged me.
-Refused to build a hospital because I thought grouping sick people together was bad.
-Tried to defuse a tense situation of one of my terriroties being occupied by a hostile army.
-Didn't defuse the tense situation, executed their diplomat.
-Pushed the occupying force out after a short conflict, I forsee no possible complications from this.
-Sentenced a possibly possessed man to death for murdering his wife.
-Possessed man killed several guards using demonic magic then promptly fled.

This game is simply amazing, It's really hard, and that's why I love this game so much. I've lost countless times, but it's fun LOL.It's basically about you are a "princess manager" lmao you have to level her skills to be a successful princess. If you level the right things and take right decissions everything will go smoothly, but otherwise if you aren't too good predicting and take bad decissions plus you didnt probably level the right skills you will probably have a hard time. I totally recommend it if you are into stuff like strategy and kind of predicting what will happen next. When you start the game it might be hard but after some minutes aka a few times game over you will understand it, if you don't like to read and prefer skipping conversation I would rather not buy this game since you HAVE TO read. I know the game might look kind of cheap but i promise it's really well done.<3

Play as Barbie, a girl who believes she can be anything, and with the help of stat boosting clothes, she can.

However, while you were standing in front of the mirror, deciding what clothes you would wear to the classes for the day, your peasants revolted. Now to keep everyone happy, you host a festival + Tournament only to get killed at the festival by an unhappy noble. YOU DIED.

Respawn at the latest bonfire and try again.

All in all, great game. Just kind of hard to wish long life for a queen who rarely survives being a princess.

When I first bought this game I thought, 'what a cute little game about a princess who wants to learn how to rule her country!' Little did I know that there were so many ways for her to die! I've only managed to complete the game once by using magic but I would really like to complete the 'win with the power of music' ending (or whatever it's called). I also wonder how to succeed at every single test throughout the story - unfortunately I failed at a lot of the small tests, resulting in poor Elodie humiliating herself time and time again >_<

I really like the music in this game, even though it is repetitive. I will be replaying this game to unlock all the achievements, different endings, and to see if I can succeed at every single test in the story.

Great game :) The steam trading cards, wallpaper and badges are cute too! ^_^

Good and challenging RPG/Interactive Visual Novel with actual Decision-Consequence. It's actually not very forgiving and in the end there are limited choices which will actually let you survive, but even then there are multiple endings. Totally worth playing.

This game is fun, but very very complicated... unless you know what you're specifically aiming for, you won't 100% this through sheer luck. That being said, it is very enjoyable, and all the sheer magnitude of different variations of what you can do to Elodie's life (the main character) is astonishing! You can turn her into anything from a benevolent saint-like super queen to a demonic-ish sadistic servant of an evil king who'd blow up her father as soon as hug him! Or... you could drown in a sea of really really mad peasants... T_T
Finding all the ways Elodie can die is almost as much fun as figuring out how to make her an effective queen, actually, and is one of the achievements!
Also, for the badge hunters out there, this game has trading cards!
I recommend this game if you like highly detail-oriented games, like D&D 3rd edition and whatnot... if you're like me and find making the characters in it the most fun part, anyways. It's pretty much creating a character sheet if the character creation was on steroids, with the rest of the game as a sidenote. =^_^=
If you're worried about achievements, don't worry at all! There are guides that will give you all of the achievements, right on steam. Only downside is that you will have to replay the game a TON for 100% achievements (if you consider that a downside. Some will, but I'm sitting on the fence about it). Good news is that each playthrough doesn't take too terribly long, being 40 weeks/turns at the longest (1 turn/week = 1 set of 2 lessons, 1 castle activity, and whatever cutscene decisions for that week)

(WARNING: This is my on personal opinion. If you don't agree with me, I understand.) (I have also played this game offline a lot! I've played about 14 hours. Not 4.)

Art
The art to this game is cute and clean cut. I like all the vibrant colors. The overall apperence is realy nice and polished. The art style realy complements the ambiance.

Music
Eh... a bit boring. But, then again this is my opinion so if you like it, I won't judge.

Story
Very interesting! I like that all the endings (except two) are death. The non death endings are also very interesting. I LIKE IT!

Characters
When you first meet Elodie you can tell how much love the creators put into just her. As you keep playing you can see that same result. All the characters are wonderfuly and carefuly crafted and you can obviously tell. I like these a lot.

Overall Rating
9.5/10 would be 10/10 if not for the glitches and music. Would recommend.

It's a pretty decent game to just kill some time with. I rather enjoyed the game for what it was. I like that there's a little bit of strategy involved with choosing which skills you want to focus on upgrading each week. Plus there is a decent amount of replay value in replaying the game to try to get different endings. Playthroughs can go by a lot faster too because they give you the option to fast forward through dialogue that you've already heard.

Long Live The Queen is a raising sim where you train a princess in a variety of social, physical, intellectual and mystical skills. Depending on your choices, her mood affects how quickly she learns in her classes. The gameplay is very similar to games such as The Sims, The Idolmaster and Princess Maker.

Unlike conventional raising sims, there is little time to worry about how to raise a perfect little princess. Angry citizens, rival nobles, neighboring countries, monsters and other dangers lie at every corner. After the first few playthroughs, you soon realize that the game is extremely ruthless and unforgiving - simply staying alive becomes the first priority. In a world where everyone is after your head, can you ensure your princess survives till her coronation?

Overall, I'd describe the game as a cross between Dark Souls and Princess Maker. Highly recommended to those looking for a unique and challenging simulation game. And despite the malice and cruelty it often rewards, there are a few light-hearted and gentle moments as well.

Became an angry dictator with ferocious military strength and poise, built upon weeks of rigorous training.

Fell in an instant to poisoned chocolates from my inability to control my sugar addiction.

First playthrough (I'd watched some people play it before).

*Maxes out military and plays like everyone is an assassin*
*Also gains the cruelty trait*
*Ends up leading the navy to victory and deciding to create a new imperium*
*Conquers world*

Yes. Just yes.

I've played much longer than the 4 hours shown, I bought this before it came to Steam and spent so many hours just playing or dying really before I pulled out the old fashioned pencil and paper and began to write down each and everything I tired and different things I learned along the way to get through this game. The end result had over ten sheets of paper with my findings on it... then of course I discovered the online walkthrough but that's another story... however the point is I spent much of my time making strategies and of course dying but it was all in good fun! This game is most certainly a 10/10 and I'd recommend it even to those who are'nt into visual novels it's just that entertaining :)

The problem with this game is that you're not given any indication of what skills are going to be needed and in what order, and there are several points in which your character will die no matter what choices your make if you don't have a certain skill at a certain level. It's pure trial and error gameplay, and restarting the game over and over isn't fun.

For the first playthrough the game seems very good and is just as enjoyable. Train some skills and see how they influence the outcome. At first it feels like a roguelike of some kind. Unfortunately when you fail and die and replay the game you find out that everything is exactly the same and - save for the outcome of some events depending on your skill. There is no randomization at all. Hence, the game is not very replayable, because everything happens the same way until the moment when you failed skillcheck the previous game, because now you know what you need. This forces metagaming, there is no way to get past some events unless you have appropriate skill and - what is worse - very often there is no hint of what skill will be required of you in the future, so you just train everything little by little until you are forced to replay the game, because you lacked a litttle skill in something. And in the end you will need everything anyway, no specialization is good, gotta be jack of all trades!

The game plays like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Age of Decadence, basically. Albeit fun for about 2 hours (or whenever it is you have to replay it for the third or so time), it quickly becomes very repetitive and boring, silly dialogues do not help. I'd actually recommend it for very very cheap though. I got it for 2.5€ I think and I would still be hesitant to recommend the game for that price, but if it is in a bundle or below 2€ or you just love manga, then go ahead and give it a try. It's actually fun for a short while... just too short of a while.

Very nice artworks and music though.
