Update #41 is Ready to Go!

Numerous community improvements, better handling of problematic players, Hero improvements, user interface upgrades, performance optimizations and more! Read below for all the details.

Community Improvements
  • Improved punishing of problematic players.
  • Punished players are now informed of their punishment with a dialog giving them the option to "Appeal" or "Accept" their punishment. Choosing to appeal the punishment may result in further punishment if our review of the appeal shows the punishment was justified. Do not appeal if you are not confident in your case.
  • Improved AFK detection.
  • The "Thumbs Down" button now flashes if a player was identified as AFK hopefully reminding players to down-vote them. The button's tooltip also informs of the reason for the flashing.
  • Added code to auto-kick players from the server if they haven't picked a hero by the time the countdown finishes. This prevents games from starting with AFK players as the match will be auto-aborted.
  • Players in Scrimmage games will now auto-join any queue pops. This should reduce the number of queue declines and helps reinforce the intent of Scrimmage mode.
  • Added some new Community Contributors and other special titles.

Heroes
  • Atasha
    • Fixed a bug with Atasha's abilities where they didn't share cooldowns between their normal and empowered states.
    • Fire Ball (Both Empowered and Normal)
      • Cooldowns were reduced to 9.5/7.0/6.5/5.0 (from 10.0/9.5/9.0/8.5)
    • Wall of Flame
      • Cooldowns were reduced to 18.0/17.0/16.0/15.0 (from 25.0/23.0/21.0/19.0)
      • Range was increased to 7.5 (from 6.0)

  • Vallamere
    • Improved readability by adjusting contrast and saturation on color texture map.
    • Vallamere's Battle Standard has had its casting times decreased to make his Q-W combo much snappier.
      • ExecuteTime reduced to 0.25 (from 0.454)

  • In-Game

    • GameOverWindow no longer closes with Enter key so won't be closed by chatting when game ends.
    • Left clicking outside an active chat window in game will now deactivate it.
    • Scrollwheel works on the item shop listbox without the listbox needing focus (so can scroll as soon as you open the shop).
    • Fixed bug where dragging the camera in minimap window with left mousebutton and right clicking to move hero would stop the dragging prematurely.

      • If disabled: When the cursor position is outside of this ability's range the ability will be cast at maximum range.
      • For example consider Drengar's W: if Move to Cast is disabled he will now leap to the maximum extents of his range in the direction of the cursor instead of moving to get in range of the cursor position before leaping.

Performance
  • Various performance optimizations.
  • A number of lobby network traffic optimizations.
  • At the end of every match you can press the "Send Performance" button to give us feedback and data that will help us narrow down performance issues.

Misc
  • Fixed bug in party system that could cause the client to go out of sync with the server.

Performance
  • Numerous optimizations (with more to come soon!)
  • Disabled voice chat by default as this can be a real CPU hog while streaming.
  • Remove the "recommended" tag on virtual full screen. Many machines will actually perform substantially better with "exclusive fullscreen". If you are having FPS issues give Exclusive fullscreen a shot.
  • Added some loading screen optimizations. This should reduce cases of "Program is not responding". Note that if you do receive this warning the game will most likely still load.

Twitch
  • Fixed bug with displaying the incorrect Twitch viewer count in-game.
  • Fixed bug where you couldn't give out Twitch Gifts unless you logged in with your Twitch username in lowercase.
  • Added a "thumbs up" icon to the streamer upvote button.
  • Fixed bug where Twitch streamers where getting "unknown" has upvoted your stream.
  • The upvote button now displays as disabled if you already voted for the streamer.
  • Moved the default position of the Twitch window so it doesn't overlap the top bar. You will need to type "/resetlayout" in chat to get the new default position.

User Interface
  • New Dialogs
    • Added a new "Quit Match" dialog, that will show up whenever a player attempts to quit an unfinished match (or the Hero Select Lobby), asking for confirmation that they really want to abandon their teammates.
    • Server patches now nicely logout all users with a friendly message box on why they are being disconnected.
  • Options/Settings
    • Tooltips can be scaled in the options->hud dialog to make them easier to read.
    • Added a setting in the Controls tab of the Options, that toggles the in-game Camera's zoom being controlled by the mouse wheel.
  • Front End Chat
    • Auto joined chat channels will now auto-shard when they reach their new max size of 250.
    • Passworded chat channels are now supported. If you create a channel with a password it will be considered private by default (won't show up in the join channel dialog listbox).
    • Changed the chat member type sorting and name color coding to give steam friends higher sort priority than before. New priority order is: Self (Gold), Party Member (Blue), Steam Friend (Green), Developer (Red), Moderator (Pink), Community Contributor (Purple), Everyone else (Grey).
  • General
    • "Edit Hero" has been renamed to "Equip Hero"
    • Fixed bug in the Hero selection lobby where Hero ability icons showed up but no mesh was visible.
    • Added 'Community Contributor' as a specialized chat name colour, and added a 'Community Contributor' tag for Player tooltips.
    • The View Stats and reward boxes now come up at the correct time at the end of a match.
    • The Post Game screen now shows the proper defeat underlay in the top left corner.
    • Advanced casting icons for items and glyphs implemented, as well as tooltip icon for advanced casting button.
    • All ComboBoxes no longer respond to mouse wheel events when focused so that the nearby Listboxes can be scrolled.

Ever caught yourself smiling at the intricate beauty of League of Legends's IP-grinding system? Jumped into a DOTA 2 match, randomed Meepo and instantly felt the next one's simply "in the bag?"

Yeah, me neither.

For all of us unskilled plebs who don't have time to either get smashed by Invoker or grind like Koreans for "champions" that get nerfed every other week (they've got skins to sell for the new releases, after all,) there's Sins of a Dark Age. The brainchild of the makers of Sins of a Solar Empire (only name-dropping that game here for some serious work ethic/critical reception brownie points,) this game has been in some sort of half-released state for over three years now, and upon its long-awaited free-to-play debut on the 8th of May, Ironclad's obsessively manic efforts are finally showing through.

The absolutely free hero roster and sheer level of detail on the character skins alone (which can, incidentally, also be crafted free of charge: basically imagine League of Legends games dropping a few dozen RP after every match in the form of "ingredients" loot to use for crafting) should win over any fan of dark fantasy games from eons past (starts with a "D" and ends with -iablo) all the way to this year's The Witcher 3; put simply, there's plenty here to slake your bloodthirst. Keep in mind that the aforementioned crafting materials are fully integrated into the Steam marketplace, so it'll be possible to fatten your Steam wallet with SODA loot on a scale that DOTA 2 players will be jealous of.

The basic game mode is your vanilla 5v5 map with so much icing heaped on top that it's become a layer cake: between "Realm Quests" (randomly generated side objectives that use classic RTS-inspired mind games to shake up your typical ARTS/"MOBA"'s FarmVille metas,) fully-featured Twitch integration (both streamers and viewers get free loot just for doing what they already do best,) an overarching, cohesive lore (no giggling hamsters or goofy cyborgs to be found here, no sir!) and the most player-sympathetic developers this side of Waystone Games (they've hotfixed patch-related bugs on the day of, I swear to God) you'd have to be neck-deep within the warm folds of your own rigid sphincter to claim that this game "brings nothing new to the genre" (that, or you're just scared for the future health of your favorite title of choice. I can't really blame you for that one.) There are also one-lane "Duel" modes that you can battle other humans within whilst queueing for a 5v5 in the background, so kiss that Hearthstone Alt-Tabbing goodbye! :D

The business model is so pro-consumer that TotalBiscuit himself used the phrases "very, very, very fair" and "extremely fair" to describe it in his "WTF Is...?" spotlight. Moving on.

The game gets updated roughly twice every three weeks, with upcoming patches to focus more on "content creation" (i.e. new heroes and Quests) once the technical kinks they've been hammering out for the past few months smooth over (the company is only 15 people, so these things obviously take time.) This game is also nowhere near done: the future plans for this title are so ambitious it's almost disturbing, and odds are if it's broken then the devs are already working on fixing it.

...honestly, I could go on and on about this game but it's like describing the joys of pizza: I'll never stop. Download the game 100% free of charge, figure out whatever it is you're having trouble with help from the integrated Wiki and forums discussions, and still rage-quit on minute one if you want to. The devs will even let you keep the loot drops for your trouble.

This is a moba definitely worth checking out, it has a really great dark fantasy theme in the artwork and the lore is cool. The devs work wonders and put out great updates very often, it's a game that is only going to get better and if you put a few hours into it you'll love it.

Dont be fooled by the mixed review, for this game use to have a price tag, but now that it is F2P the community has gotten bigger, and improved on a lot of the major aspects for the game.

IF you are looking for something new in a MOBA, but still with the feel of your personal favorite, this is a great choice. For me it is a grand entry helping me keep my mind of the fact that Dawngate died :{

Only reason people dont recommend is simply because it is a moba. This game is great.

Obviously, a MOBA genre game can only become so unique before it is not really a moba anymore; this game does a good job of keeping the MOBA feel while introducing new mechanics.

The primary example of new mechanics is the quest system. On 6 ( i think) minute intervals there are quests for both teams to compete over. Accomplishing these gives a temporary item with a unique passive/active.

This game is simply well made, it has great optimization, customization and atmosphere.

One of the things I hate about LoL is the random cartoony characters that don't fit in (looking at you, Tristana). Everything, including skins, has the common dark fantasy feel.

This game is amazing, the skins available are the best i have ever seen in a game. 8.5/10

highly unbalanced match making system. other then that it is a amazing game. 8/10 - i will take 1 point away for how the players in game react if you are new and i would take another point away for the unbalanced match making system. other then that i would recommend this game to anyone - it is a fun and fully free game to play, the only thing you ever have to pay for, is mostly cosmetics.

It does bring a few new things to the table and getting all characters for free is nothing to sneeze at. If you can find and keep a full group this could have teeth. Time will tell.

Interesting new stuff related to jungle ( which i love the most ), quest system, dark theme with characters who fit in nicely... Well, see and decide for yourself, this game is worth to at least try it and i am sure that you will like it. Highly recommended, even in this early stages of the game there is much fun in it.

If you've played games like LoL and find it too slow or played Dota2 and found it too overwhelming, then this is the game for you. A mix of gameplay between both with added features such as quests and crafting makes this game unique in its own rights.

Alright, so there's a hefty amount of negative reviews out there that say "SoaDA is just a copy of LoL/DotA" or "SoaDA has nothing new to it". First of all, quit writing such trash reviews - at least attempt to have a shred of objectivity, because those are blatant lies. And I'm calling you all out on them.

Second of all, have you played either of these games you are comparing? The metagame in League of Legends and DotA2 is fixed. The metagame in Sins of a Dark Age is dynamic and will wildly differ one game to the next. None of this formulaic "1 AD Melee Top, 1 AP Mid, 1 Jungle, 1 Ranged AD + 1 Support Bot" crap that you see in League of Legends. Why? Because when you play the game properly, there are quests every eight minutes that definitely alter the flow of the game. One game you could be hunting verics, the next you might have to siege towers. There is no predictability in playing this game, it is very much a game where you must adapt your playing style and tactics to the situation at hand.

And maybe people don't like that. After all, LoL and DotA are the two most popular games today. So woe to SoaDA for trying to change the "successful recipe", right? I can totally see people who are used to playing a game the same way over and over again being thrown for a ride when they try this game. They get mad because they lost the few games they try to play, and then dismiss SoaDA as being "uninspired". Yet as someone who was never hooked on MOBAs in the first place (I only played LoL because my friends would), SoaDA has me coming back for more.

Another difference? Shared farming gold. I remember in my time in LoL, people hated playing support because it usually meant less gold/less power or they would actively compete with their lanemate trying to steal farm. SoaDA promotes teamwork by giving a share of all gold from minions to allies within a certain radius.

Oh, we want more differences? How about your "summoner spells" (which are totally ripped off, right?)? Well, SoaDA re-introduces the utility skills in LoL as "Glyphs". However, unlike LoL where you must choose the two skills before the game, the glyphs are in-game level up rewards... meaning you can adapt your strategy around your teammates and opponents on the fly. Did I mention they also level up? Yeah, there are three tiers to each glyph, and each tier has two options to further expand on strategic choices.

Not enough? How about the lack of "childish" characters? Yeah, in a game where we're fighting to the death, you won't see any little girls with teddy bears or silly flying robots or characters shooting lazerbeams. The theme is distinct, it's dark, it's gritty, and it really suits what a MOBA is all about.

And we're still not done! How about crafting? Does your MOBA have crafting? What about inventories and loadouts? Gear that can alter the effects of a hero's skill? That's what I thought, so gtfo of here with your "nothing new" crap.

So let's set the record straight... this game is not for fans of DotA or LoL. You already have your inferior MOBAs to satisfy you. This game is for people who like seeing the MOBA genre growing and evolving and not stagnating and remaining the same for 6+ years.

If you've enjoyed a MOBA in the past, but got bored because the game was too stale, then give SoaDA a shot. I promise, you'll be pleasantly surprised. After all, these are the developers of Sins of a Solar Empire we're talking about...

But yeah... "0/10 just a re-skin of League" :^)
Even though all the characters are free... I swear, do some people not realize how stupid they sound when they pull stuff out of thin air? It's just a shame Steam gives them a chance to influence someone else and put them off from the game.

Review for players interested in the game:

I'm a veteran of Dota 1/2 and League of Legends. I say this not to brag, but to let those of you know that this review is critiqued by a person who has been playing this genre of game for years.

NOTE:This game was originally put out in an Alpha state to help test some of the mechanics and fine tone the game, and it has caused a mixed review setting, but I can tell you NOW as of May 2015 the game is well made, and a worth entry into the MOBA genre.

Let's go over some of the pros and cons for this game!

As of May 2015

    PROS:
  • It has an extremely customizable matchmaking system. You can have five different search "playlists" which can be customized heavily. Want to have a solo playlist with EU friends? Make it. Want to have an unranked playlist to practice or get quick games in? Covered. Want a PvP ranked playlist? Done.
  • Like smartcast? Normal cast? Quick cast? They more than have you covered. Within the keybinding settings is an option to not only do individual heroes, but each individual skill. Want your heroes ultimate to be quick cast while your hero's Q be a smartcast? You can do that. It's a fantastic piece of user interaction that is done better than basically every other MOBA.
  • 5v5 matches include a special series of world quests that happen every 8 minutes. These world quests are objectives that can be completed by EITHER side in a competition style format that can FORCE teamfights, and/or give one side an advantage. The enemy team getting more kills then you? Try to level it out by working with your team to complete the world quests before the enemy team and start regaining ground. Quests can include things like transporting a chest across map for bonus gold, or ones that give special items to disable towers.
  • The business model. The business model in this game is exceptionally well done. Hate grinding for months to get all the champions in league? Don't worry, all heroes are available from the start similar to DOTA, and the main venue for money that this game gets is through cosmetic skins. Unlike many other F2P games you can not simply buy power.
  • Like playing a support, but hate never getting any gold to buy items? Their is a percentage of gold share in this game similar to how Dawngate worked. Supports can gain gold by assisting in kills, assisting in quests objectives, and doing lethal / non-lethal damage to creeps.
  • There is a gear and crafting system which utilizes recipes and materials gained from matches. The gear works in similar way to runes in LoL, with some special pieces slightly changing the effects of a specific heroes abilities. The crafting system also applies to skins, so if you gather the recipe and related materials for a skin you can simply craft it to use. Retired skins that are no longer sold can be sold on the steam marketplace.
  • The community is exceptionally nice, and there is an in game system that rewards respectful players. I've seen developers and community moderators online quite often in the general chat to talk with, and it shows a great commitment to their work.
  • Twitch is integrated directly into the game, and if you go to the menu via Escape you can link your twitch account directly to SODA. With it enabled you can view your twitch stream chat while in game, amongst several other useful features.
  • A try hero mode can be played while waiting for your match Queue to pop. It allows you to warm up with a hero you'd like to play, or just mess around with various tactics versus an AI. It's a useful tool and a good way to pass the time!

    CONS:
  • There are currently 20 heroes. This is something that can be expanded with updates as more characters rollout, but it is a relatively slim selection compared to what MOST MOBA players are used to.
  • There are currently Frame hitches that will happen during games. Developers are working on a patch to fix these problems, but as of right now there are many people suffering from frame rate issues.
  • The inventory system in your profile can at times feel harder to navigate. Especially at later levels as the icons are quite large, and by the time you hit level 10 or so you will have a lot of various materials.

In Conclusion:
Sins of a Dark Age is a very well constructed MOBA that combines a lot of liked elements from the MOBA genre, and provides an effective way to come back with the use of team work. Especially when quest objectives and their respective rewards can really change up your plan in the game. E.G. If you complete the quest to gain the tower disable ability it is a smart time to push, whereas if you get the item to slow enemies it would indicate a heavy usage on ganks and team fights to be successful.

The game offers a lot of fantastic player options, user interface improvements, and gameplay that rewards teamwork without making it always needed. You can still solo Queue and do great with a public team. Especially when your teammates all know to help with objectives, but it will reward teams for being well coordinated and communicating well.

All of this with the price tag of : FREE means that I can easily recommend this to ANY MOBA player or people looking for an introduction into the genre. It encompasses MOBA aspects expected by veterans of the genre and can successfully introduce new players to the genre.

Im one of those, who enjoy a lot of different MOBAs.

This one is amazing for what it does! The REAL Free 2 Play model they have adopted here is outstanding! Heck you can even get the skins for free! Im just hoping that they will be able to sustain the business with giving you so much stuff for nothing!

The stuff that you could compare to League of Legends rune system, is instead much more RPG themed, with items and such, but in theory it does the same stuff. But it feels a lot different.

The 5v5 mode which looks a lot like the ones your used to in other MOBAs, is A LOT different because of having objectives in the form of random quests that happens every now and then, which rewards the team that finishes it. It many times becomes a battle and balance between the teams on who wants it the most. Which puts a lot of tactical depth to the gameplay that feels very unique and is what makes this game stand out the most!

The 2v2 is really fun, fast and actionpacked. I have never enjoyed single lane gameplay before, but in this game it is awesome fun! Try it out, specially with a buddy, or heck with 3 other buddys you can do custom 2v2 and have a blast!

This is also the first ever game I seen that SPONSORS anyone who streams the game! LIKE REALLY! From in game you can giveaway in game chests to your viewers as long as they have signed in to their twitch account from the game menu. And since its F2P that is so easy for them to do. In return they can upvote your stream from inside the game, through witch you as the streamer gets rewarded with chests and items. This thing is something every game dev should look at and think about. This is how you support the twitch community on a passive way where everyone benefits! Best initiative I have seen from a developer when it comes to supporting streamers.

Give this game a go! Its amazingly well and totally worth! This deserves a lot more spotlight and should be one up there competing with the other MOBAs imo!
