"DOTA-style game. All the heroes are free, interesting "quest" objective system. Fairly similar to LoL, but perhaps enough new to warrant a try."

Update #41 is Ready to Go!

Numerous community improvements, better handling of problematic players, Hero improvements, user interface upgrades, performance optimizations and more! Read below for all the details.

Community Improvements
  • Improved punishing of problematic players.
  • Punished players are now informed of their punishment with a dialog giving them the option to "Appeal" or "Accept" their punishment. Choosing to appeal the punishment may result in further punishment if our review of the appeal shows the punishment was justified. Do not appeal if you are not confident in your case.
  • Improved AFK detection.
  • The "Thumbs Down" button now flashes if a player was identified as AFK hopefully reminding players to down-vote them. The button's tooltip also informs of the reason for the flashing.
  • Added code to auto-kick players from the server if they haven't picked a hero by the time the countdown finishes. This prevents games from starting with AFK players as the match will be auto-aborted.
  • Players in Scrimmage games will now auto-join any queue pops. This should reduce the number of queue declines and helps reinforce the intent of Scrimmage mode.
  • Added some new Community Contributors and other special titles.

  • Atasha
    • Fixed a bug with Atasha's abilities where they didn't share cooldowns between their normal and empowered states.
    • Fire Ball (Both Empowered and Normal)
      • Cooldowns were reduced to 9.5/7.0/6.5/5.0 (from 10.0/9.5/9.0/8.5)
    • Wall of Flame
      • Cooldowns were reduced to 18.0/17.0/16.0/15.0 (from 25.0/23.0/21.0/19.0)
      • Range was increased to 7.5 (from 6.0)

  • Vallamere
    • Improved readability by adjusting contrast and saturation on color texture map.
    • Vallamere's Battle Standard has had its casting times decreased to make his Q-W combo much snappier.
      • ExecuteTime reduced to 0.25 (from 0.454)
      • CommitTime reduced to 0.26 (from 0.471)
      • StopTime reduced to 0.33 (from 0.6)
    • Wired up the "on allied hero" effect for Vallamere's Battle Standard.
    • Adjusted dissolve time of Vallamere's Battle Standard.
    • Updated Vallamere's Battle Standard Animation.

  • Bataar
    • Dazing Blows' enhanced attack now gets consumed when Bataar attacks a Structure or a ward. (Note: Towers will not have their attack reduced slowed by Dazing Blows)

  • Slivus
    • Ravage's enhanced attack now gets consumed when Slivus attacks a structure or a ward. (Note: AoE damage will not be procced when attacking structures or wards)

  • Vexie
    • Fixed the slow where Resize was not being dispelled by crowd control removal effects.

  • Ziri
    • Tumbling Blade's enhanced attack now gets consumed when Ziri attacks a Structure or a ward.

  • Skalla
    • Fix Skalla's Predatory Instincts triggering Bleeding more often than intended.

  • Ermuk
    • Improved readability by adjusting contrast and saturation on color texture map.

  • Serewyn
    • Improved readability by adjusting contrast and saturation on color texture map.

User Interface
  • In-Game
    • Active items now have indicator overlays. A gold border indicates they can be used and a grey border means they are currently disabled. Items without actives show no border.
    • Updated Shop Undo Button.
    • GameOverWindow no longer closes with Enter key so won't be closed by chatting when game ends.
    • Left clicking outside an active chat window in game will now deactivate it.
    • Scrollwheel works on the item shop listbox without the listbox needing focus (so can scroll as soon as you open the shop).
    • Fixed bug where dragging the camera in minimap window with left mousebutton and right clicking to move hero would stop the dragging prematurely.
    • QuickGlyphPurchasePanel no longer traps all mouse button up events if not visible.
  • Front End
    • Added a 'Leave Party' button to the Party Chat Panel.
    • Each General Chat channel now caps at 100 players.
    • Chat channel member list box syncing no longer wipes out the scrolled position.
  • Advanced Casting
    • Advanced casting moved from a keybindings dialog to a tab on the options screen.
    • Added a new Advanced Casting option called "Move to Cast" that controls if point targeted abilities move to get within range or not.
      • If enabled: When the cursor position is outside of this ability's range then your hero will move to get within range.
      • If disabled: When the cursor position is outside of this ability's range the ability will be cast at maximum range.
      • For example consider Drengar's W: if Move to Cast is disabled he will now leap to the maximum extents of his range in the direction of the cursor instead of moving to get in range of the cursor position before leaping.

  • Various performance optimizations.
  • A number of lobby network traffic optimizations.
  • At the end of every match you can press the "Send Performance" button to give us feedback and data that will help us narrow down performance issues.

  • Fixed bug in party system that could cause the client to go out of sync with the server.
  • Empire and Horen Wave minions: Increased brightness on color map slightly to make them more readable.
  • Spelling and grammar fixes.

  • Front End Chat
    • Auto joined chat channels will now auto-shard when they reach their new max size of 250.
    • Passworded chat channels are now supported. If you create a channel with a password it will be considered private by default (won't show up in the join channel dialog listbox).

Alright, so there's a hefty amount of negative reviews out there that say "SoaDA is just a copy of LoL/DotA" or "SoaDA has nothing new to it". First of all, quit writing such trash reviews - at least attempt to have a shred of objectivity, because those are blatant lies. And I'm calling you all out on them.

Second of all, have you played either of these games you are comparing? The metagame in League of Legends and DotA2 is fixed. The metagame in Sins of a Dark Age is dynamic and will wildly differ one game to the next. None of this formulaic "1 AD Melee Top, 1 AP Mid, 1 Jungle, 1 Ranged AD + 1 Support Bot" crap that you see in League of Legends. Why? Because when you play the game properly, there are quests every eight minutes that definitely alter the flow of the game. One game you could be hunting verics, the next you might have to siege towers. There is no predictability in playing this game, it is very much a game where you must adapt your playing style and tactics to the situation at hand.

And maybe people don't like that. After all, LoL and DotA are the two most popular games today. So woe to SoaDA for trying to change the "successful recipe", right? I can totally see people who are used to playing a game the same way over and over again being thrown for a ride when they try this game. They get mad because they lost the few games they try to play, and then dismiss SoaDA as being "uninspired". Yet as someone who was never hooked on MOBAs in the first place (I only played LoL because my friends would), SoaDA has me coming back for more.

Another difference? Shared farming gold. I remember in my time in LoL, people hated playing support because it usually meant less gold/less power or they would actively compete with their lanemate trying to steal farm. SoaDA promotes teamwork by giving a share of all gold from minions to allies within a certain radius.

Oh, we want more differences? How about your "summoner spells" (which are totally ripped off, right?)? Well, SoaDA re-introduces the utility skills in LoL as "Glyphs". However, unlike LoL where you must choose the two skills before the game, the glyphs are in-game level up rewards... meaning you can adapt your strategy around your teammates and opponents on the fly. Did I mention they also level up? Yeah, there are three tiers to each glyph, and each tier has two options to further expand on strategic choices.

Not enough? How about the lack of "childish" characters? Yeah, in a game where we're fighting to the death, you won't see any little girls with teddy bears or silly flying robots or characters shooting lazerbeams. The theme is distinct, it's dark, it's gritty, and it really suits what a MOBA is all about.

And we're still not done! How about crafting? Does your MOBA have crafting? What about inventories and loadouts? Gear that can alter the effects of a hero's skill? That's what I thought, so gtfo of here with your "nothing new" crap.

So let's set the record straight... this game is not for fans of DotA or LoL. You already have your inferior MOBAs to satisfy you. This game is for people who like seeing the MOBA genre growing and evolving and not stagnating and remaining the same for 6+ years.

If you've enjoyed a MOBA in the past, but got bored because the game was too stale, then give SoaDA a shot. I promise, you'll be pleasantly surprised. After all, these are the developers of Sins of a Solar Empire we're talking about...

But yeah... "0/10 just a re-skin of League" :^)
Even though all the characters are free... I swear, do some people not realize how stupid they sound when they pull stuff out of thin air? It's just a shame Steam gives them a chance to influence someone else and put them off from the game.

Sins of a Dark Age is a MOBA that's not as hardcore as say Dota 2 or HoN but at the same time not as casual as LoL, HoTS or Strife. It's somewhere in the middle and I like that.

In this game you can't deny creeps nor towers and you don't lose the gold when you die. The game has a gold sharing mechanic; If you kill the creep you will get the full amount of gold from the kill while your teammate (if he was nearby) will get half the amount of what you got.

The game also has a Glyph system. Think of them as something like 'Summoner Spells' but you don't pick them before the match but rather once the match starts. Which is a great thing, because you can pick glyphs based on which enemies you're against. You can also upgrade them in match once you reach certain levels. Each glyph can be upgraded twice, each time choosing between two different upgrade choices.

Then there's also Quest System. The quests start at certain points in the game and are randomly picked for each match from a pool of quests. Each time you manage to win a quest your team gets a permanent bonus for the entire match. There are 4 tiers of bonuses.

While quests are worth doing, they're not a must. You'll have to decide do you want to do the quest or will you rather stay in lane and farm or push and destroy enemy towers. The enemy team has to make the same choice. This is where things get interesting and really make each match different because what you're going to do depends on the current situation in the match.

Another interesting thing is the crafting system. After each match you'll get a reward and it'll be either crafting recipe, materials, lore pages and if you're lucky you could get a skin.

You can craft hero skins as well as gear items (you can equip your heroes with them before matches to gain small bonuses). It's fun and it basically allows you to get all skins and gear without paying anything (you can buy skins in the game's shop if you don't feel like bothering with crafting, gear on the other hand isn't available in the game's shop). You can trade items with other players and you can also buy or sell them on steam market.

The game currently has 5v5 and 2v2 modes. There's also 5vsAI. Developers have said they plan to add more modes in the future too.

There are only 20 heroes in the game at the moment which is not surprising considering the game is new. However each hero is fun to play with and feels different and there is a fair amount of heroes of each type (carry, spellcaster, tank, support, assassin). Developers will of course continue adding more heroes over time.

To wrap this review up I'll say the game is really great, a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend it. The only problem some people have (including me) are optimization issues and stuttering but that's something the developers are working hard to fix and hopefully wont be a problem anymore in the near future.

This game is definitely worth a try and i would recommend it to new players and veterans alike. Responsive and fluid animations, changeable attribute points and gear, and the freedom to pick your "summoner spells" after you already see what you are up against. This allows you more freedom to play how you want and not how the meta forces you to play. This game definitely has some real potential and i see some staying power especially with its steam release.

I'm a veteran when it comes to MOBA games, since WC2 Dota to every other moba games (HON,Dota2,Strife,Dawn Gate, HOTS, LOL etc) this game adds a lot of the elements from major games and meshes them all together to create a unique RPG MOBA experience which keeps you coming back for more, even tho it's still in beta and has its weakness that can easily be improved from more players joining!

TIPS: learn the tutorials and get to know the game and the community, this game has a theme of it's own which is unique and hits the spot when it comes down to the dark feel that reminds me of diablo :)

Great moba with a few minor flaws. Things like low population make the games matchmaking system work extra hard trying to match players of similar skill levels without making them wait 20 minutes for each game. It seems like a few banner ads would go a long way for an online game in this stage of its development.

I love the in game quests which prevent teams from defaulting to a hardcore turtle strategy. The heroes are all interesting and although there are only a couple hand fulls of heroes to choose from, it feels like a pretty diverse pool of heroes.

The games biggest flaw right now is probably matchmaking and having more players would fix that.

Great new MOBA ! I would 100% recommend this to anyone wanting to try a MOBA out. The community is friendly and helpful to new players asking questions. Greatest part is the devs are in chat daily talking to people and are actively responding to suggestions. Mechanics are solid and it is truly f2p, only cosmetics are buy items but even they can be earned freely if you are patient.

If you want to be in on the ground floor of the newest, latest and greatest moba to come out then this is the game to try. Friend me on steam before you log in to the game and I can send you a new player pack that gives you 2 free chests with a shot at rare skins. It has to be sent BEFORE you log in to the game though, keep that in mind.

I like this game because it had dark theme normal not found on other mobas atleast not like this.
Then there is unique quest system no other moba have.
Graphics are beautiful to look at.
Gold is shared between heroes on last hitting but last hitter gets more gold always.(no competition between team mates)
Hero specific gear can be added to change their in-game abilities.
Items in-game changes strategies how a hero is being used.
Lots of server choices and all servers are stable to play on.
No longer have population problems so shorter queue times.
Devs come to play the game and interact with us all.
Devs listen to feedback and are improving the game constantly.
This i am writing after playing this game

great game with good art style and nice concepts all around to do and a lot of potential to grow as a game when new heros come.
though i feel bad since there is no SEA servers and i get a lot of lag trying to play in USA. :( but i understand the fact that not a lot of players will be playing the game outside of US.
some enemy hero or minions in the jungle are difficult to click on since the circle/models are quite small compared to other games of this genre. (personally i should spam the mouse so much and just click once XD)
really hope this game gets popular. good luck on it.

I've played MOBAs for quite a bit of time, (been playing league since season 1 and played a fair bit of Heroes of Newerth too) and i must say that strangely, this is probably the one I enjoy the most, from the nice art style to the more fleshed-out player progression and the quest system, this game feels solid and consistent in its atmosphere.

The quest system brings up a superior level of strategy to the game apart from the usual phases contained in a match and allows for teams with better team play to get out of disadvantageous positions. Sure, for now, the amount of heroes is not that great but this goes with the game being in early access and no classic or important type of hero is missing from the pool at this point in time which makes the game for a correctly balanced experience, apart from when the the matchmaking system pits you against level 9001 players (though sometimes the opposite will happen so it's kind of a coin-flip at this point).

The crafting system and its integration to the steam market is also very nice in the way it makes the game work and trade for what you want, instead of you endlessly grinding in-game currency or paying up to get that fancy hero or skin you want and is not too hard to understand if you are willing to look at the wiki, which has built-in links in the game.

The gameplay feels good and relies somewhat on skillshots with a higher velocity than league but also smaller hitboxes, meaning that having the enemy not know where you will move next is more important than twitch-reflex skills. The game is satisfying to play, tanky heroes take some time to go down and fragile heroes can always be brought down without problems by two or more players no matter how fed they are (it that hero is a tank, it's a completely different story though). The duel mode that pits players in 1v1 or 2v2 matches is also nice if you are on a tighter schedule and allows for nice team play when pairing with a friend. There is VoIP in this game, though I've never actually seen it be used.

In the end, Sins of a Dark Age is a very appealing game by its non-restrictive business and crafting systems, its sober art style compared to others in the genre and the variety it brings to its gameplay by quests and smaller matches. The ability to try a hero out whilst in queue is also a nice touch as it reduces the time spent waiting when the server population is lower than usual and allows not to be completely at loss with a new hero when the match arrives.
