Reviews

“7 Days to Die achieves exactly what it sets out to be. It’s a fun and intense post-apocalyptic sandbox with all the right mix of base-defense, scavenging, and exploration.”
8.3 – Shoost

“7 Days to Die is like Minecraft with Gravity. Building defenses with friends and huddling in the corner hoping no zombies get through can be great fun. But what keeps me coming back to the game is the TNT.”
Kotaku

“7 Days to Die looks genuinely impressive, and I can’t see this not making a huge impact when it arrives.”

About This Game

Building on survivalist and horror themes, players in 7 Days to Die can scavenge the abandoned cities of the buildable and destructible voxel world for supplies or explore the wilderness to gather raw materials to build their own tools, weapons, traps, fortifications and shelters. In coming updates these features will be expanded upon with even more depth and a wider variety of choices to survive the increasing dangers of the world. Play alone or with friends, run your own server or join others.

7 Days to Die development was launched following a successful Kickstarter campaign in August 2013, demonstrating the initial prototype. Joining us in early access now will help support the cause and ensure continued expansion of the development team, their efforts and the planning and addition of even more features and depth eagerly awaited by fans.

Many of our fans have commented in these early stages that they feel we are building the survival\zombie game they have always wanted. Our goal is to live up to this as much as we can and build a customizable, moddable game that allows users to fine tune their survival and zombie experience to create the experience players and their friends want.

  • Random World Generation - Play Navezgane or roll the dice and dive back into the game with friends in a randomized world with huge cities, towns, rivers, lakes, mountains, valleys, roads, bridges, cave systems and wilderness locations.
  • Create and Destroy - The world terrain, structures and items can be destroyed or scrapped for resources. Re-purpose collected materials to build custom structures and fortification by hand, placing building pieces into the world in real time.
  • Terrain Enhancement - The terrain is now both smooth and natural but can still be destroyed and mined.
  • Upgradable Fort Building - Player built structures are assembled from framework which can be upgraded supporting sod, wood, cobblestone and concrete upgrade paths. Hammer away just like real building and use Land Claim blocks to protect your fort in PvP.
  • Structural Integrity - Buildings and terrain formations which are too unstable can fall apart if proper supports are not built. Some building materials are stronger than others and pieces which break off and fall can be dangerous or deadly if they fall on you or enemies.
  • Item Crafting & Degradation - With a continually growing list of over 250 recipes, gather resources such as plant fibers, wood and metal to create weapons and tools such as hand made crossbows, knives and hammers. As your tools wear out over time, use your crafting skills to repair them.
  • Quality Ranged Gear - Guns, weapons, tools, armor and clothing have quality ranges which govern attributes to provide hundreds of thousands of item permutations. Level up and craft better quality items to survive.
  • Plants and Animals - Locate seeds to plant and grow vegetables, and head out into the wilderness to hunt animals once the cabinets in abandoned buildings are already plundered.
  • Stealth System - Sneak past zombies who can see, hear and smell you and smelly items in your inventory and throw rocks to distract them.
  • Buff/Debuff System – Enjoy or deal with a multitude of buffs or debuffs like a caffeine buzz or a broken leg in our rapidly growing Buff/Debuff System with over a dozen boosts or ailments.
  • Cooperative Mode - Tired of zombie apocalypses that are more about fighting humans than zombies? Team up with your friends to work with other survivors rather than against them, using group efforts to build settlements and safety.
  • Character Customization - Full Character creation system with face/body morphing, custom skin, eye, hair color, facial hair and a multitude of visible clothing and armor.

(Features in various stages of development, which will be added as the project progresses)

  • World Building Tools and Mod Support - Greatly expanded creation tools for players to create their own apocalypse for them and their friends, including Steam Workshop support.
  • Skill Trees - Choose unique character skills and perks to enhance your characters abilities.
  • Drivable Vehicles - The cars in the world have long since decayed, but you may find enough raw parts to build a custom ride.
  • Skills System – Earn XP and upgrade your skills to become the ultimate Bruiser, Gun Nut, Gadget Man, Chemist or Stealth Agent.
  • Missions & Story Points- Do favors for NPC characters in return for experience and rewards, and learn more about what has happened in the world.
  • Infected Wildlife - Wildlife can become infected. There will be bears. Zombie bears.
  • Virtual Reality Headset Support - For the times when wandering through the woods at night isn't quite scary enough.
  • Environmental Temperature - Find shelter or build a campfire. Cold nights or long days in the desert will make a difference.
  • Weather Effects - The weather will change, and it may influence your survival.
  • NPC Characters - Stumble upon the occasional computer controlled character. Talk, trade or engage them. Locate safe houses controlled by them.
  • Professional Soundtrack & Voices - For those who prefer mood setting music to go with their game, and professional screaming.

This in-development little gem really took me by surprise. I expected it to be just like every other zombie survival out there. In fact, while it incorporates many of the features we've come to expect in zombie and survival games, it also introduces us to new features, The smell of food attracting zombies, zombies using their senses to find you, being actively hunted, not to mention an array of different zombies, bloaters, bloated zombies who spit poison, ember zombies that catch you on fire if they hit you, runners, tree climbers, etc. The playing map is similar to minecraft, in that it goes on forever and there are different biomes. Everything is breakable in game, zombies can actually collapse houses by causing enough structural damage, which they will do if they sense you but can't find you. Remember this is still in development, so there are a few bugs, clipping issues etc; However, this game has virtually unlimited potential and has won me over already.

Found invisible zombie and died.... Went stealthily exploring and died... Had raw pork and died.... Tripped on a zombie and go infected and died.... Broke my legs jumping into the water running from fast zombies and died... collapsed a barn on my head picking up a haybale and died...

10/10 Would die again

If they could get rid of ONE thing it would be the dogs.

Friends, I have killed a lot of zombies. Tallying my stats from Steam, I have spent over 2100 hours in games fighting zombies. That's almost 3 months of real time. Of all those games, 14 were devoted specifically to anti-zed combat. In L4D2 alone, thanks to the Steam stat-tracking data, I can tell you that I have over 337,000 confirmed kills. That's a lot of zombies. And that's not even including all the zombie killing I've done outside of Steam in games like Minecraft.

So, when I write a review for a game like 7 Days to Die, I think I'm qualified to give an informed opinion. Hopefully, it will also be an interesting or entertaining one. But this time I'm going to make it short and sweet because I haven't gone terribly far into the game as yet, and also because this is an early/pre-release review. 7DtD is a work in progress, it's true. And, as such, it still has some bugs, though not that many in my limited experience. And the rumors are true: it's an ugly game, mostly. I'm not here to give an in-depth review, however, I'm here to tell you why I like this game and why you should give it a chance.

To give you just a taste, imagine if you combined Minecraft with DayZ and got rid of the terrible community of snarks, hackers, and griefers (DayZ players, you know what I mean), all while fixing the zombies so that they not only work, but work smart instead of hard. Yes, at times I can't help feeling that the same people who did the art for Killing Floor had something to do with this gem, but think of 7DtD as the one who can't coast on looks alone who instead tries hard to bring something to the table besides inane meteorological commentary. If 7DtD has anything, it's brainzzz... No, I'm serious, it's a smart game with smartly done zombies.

Imagine playing minecraft in a world without the blocky style (or the odd beauty that accompanies it at times), where instead of laughing at vanilla zombies you run and sneak and generally fear for your life because they are "coming to get you, Barbara..." (sorry, I had to... the flying turtles made me). Imagine a world where you choose between Romero or 28 style zed, where said zed can smell if you're carrying some rabbit or deer meat on your person, where zombo can hear you searching that house because you broke a window to get in and then had to break into a fortified area to get at the safe you spied between the boards over the doorway, where the walking dead might be easy one on one, but damning and deadly should you not stay on top of your game and get cornered by a horde, where you never know what the game is going to throw at you next because although some things remain predictable, those things seem refreshingly logical and limited.

You take down an infected nurse and find some medical supplies. You search a car and find some auto parts. Medicines are where you'd expect them. Guns are where you'd expect them. Food and supplies are pretty much where you'd expect them. You're not going to find a wolf carrying a sack of gold or a rat carrying bits of materials for you to use in crafting. Sometimes, a town will have a pharmacy and be full of rare medical supplies. Sometimes, a town will have a weapons supplier that has nothing left on its shelves. Sometimes you'll stumble into a snowy region or a fallout zone and find some unusual things. Sometimes you'll feel the game is unfair, but it's up to you to set your boundaries because, like Minecraft, you can set the game to creative and enable cheats if that's the way you want to play it. Run from those zombies, or fly, the choice is up to you. Either way, I've solidly enjoyed my brief time in this game and I urge you to consider not skipping it even though you may feel that you've killed all the zombies you could want to kill in one lifetime.

My one qualifier on my recommendation is that you should factor into your decision whether you will be able to play this game with friends because, like Minecraft, it's perhaps most fun when it's done with people you care about and enjoy spending time with.

Thanks for reading. Hope to see you in game soon.

Step 1: Made a bow and some arrows. Because tutorials rule.
Step 2: ran towards a city.
Step 3: Saw zombies and shot them because I was afraid.
Step 4: ran into a house and got some items.
Step 5: turned around.
Step 6: Crapped my pants, because Mr. Zombie thought it would be funny to scare me by being right behind me.

11/10 Would Crap my pants again.

Quite literally the ONLY zombie survival game in existence with nice, active devs who listen to the community, and doesn't have any EA related shenanigans, like, at ALL.

Sure it's Alpha and the game is still quite crude, but it has a ton of potential. And as I claimed before, no penny-pinching shenanigans from the devs. Pay once, and you're done.

Live underneath gas station, in a hole that I dug out with a shovel made of rocks. Only leave in the mornings to scavenge through trash for food, so that I do not have to contend with zombies using the aforementioned shovel made of rocks...

10/10 I have accepted this as my life now.

I've played most of the survival games out there, and this has to be by
FAR the best one available. The Devs are very active, and are adding
things at a very reasonable rate, with consistent patches and updates.

This game just has everything you want. Zombies, and tons of them,
especially at night when they turn into 28 days later crack zombies.

Building, you can build underground, above ground, build castles, huts,
shelters, expansions on already existing buildings. The things I've seen
in this game amaze me. The creativity of some people is astounding. I've
literally seen kilometer long tunnels leading from a base, to a nearby town.
I've also seen castles surrounded with spikes, and hidden doors / passages.

The looting system is also great. Items generally spawn every 7 in-game
days which is a very reasonable amount of time. The randomly generated
maps are amazing, and literally endless so you have to potential to find
hundreds of towns, etc. So much freedom you can even deconstruct
buildings in towns, use dynamite to blow things up, chainsaws, augers.

The leveling system is very well done too, and very unique as it hasn't been
done in other popular survival games. As you level up, you become more
efficient at crafting - being able to create higher tier items. At first, you'll
be able to create Faulty items, which are the lowest quality, as you level you'll
be able to create from Faulty - Poor - Good - Fine - Great - Flawless. It takes
forever to gain a high enough level to make flawless items so you can spend
lots of time leveling up which adds highly to the game playability.

There's also PVE servers for people who don't want to deal with PVP. Every
server I've joined, the admins are great and active. If anything happens, they're
generally happy to help regardless of the situation.

Highly recommend this game over every other survival game available.
Don't read anymore reviews. This game is in Alpha, and is very playable
and has lots to offer in content, features, and enjoyment.

If you want a good zombie suvival game, this is literally the best game out there to come of that genre and to be the best for a long long time.

Even if you want no zombies and to get used to playing the game, you can turn them off and play yourself to get familiar with it, or better yet like myself play on hard difficulties and make looting percentages rather low to give yourself a 7DTD fallout 3 feel world ending.

I will update as more features are added!

Running around drunk/dehydrated with the sh*ts, broken legs and a sledgehammer simulator: 9/10 would get sh*ts again.

Fallout and MineCraft just had a b@st@rd lovechild!

Pros:
What's better than a chainsaw? A GIANT DRILL!
No dealing with @sshole players, trolls, and cheaters again! Just start your own game or find one of many well managed servers.

Totally 100% destructible "voxel" environment! - Locked door? HULK SMASH! No Problem!
Build structures with real physics. [Add frames and trusses, unless you enjoy being a meat pancake!]

Cross-Platform multiplayer AND CO-OP; this is an overlooked feature in many games. Play with your console peasant friends!

Getting Crunk off grain alcohol and beer! :)
Good crafting system - still needs work but a great start
Zombie "senses" A.I that can hear and smell you!
No boring lockpicking minigame: either a delay or no wait depending on server/game rules!
Easily custom tuned games - create your own apocalypse. Lots of settings to change.
Randomly generated maps and biomes.
Frequent developer updates and active community.
Vehicles coming soon.
More Zombie animals coming too...like bears....OhHeeellllNO.jpg

Cons:
You will still find the trolls they are in every game. Also, rarely you will find a hacker but I found them to be mostly minding their own business. This is again, a problem in every game. It's really an arms race between the devs and hackers - it can not truly be solved ever - report, switch servers or of course: start your own game!
It is however nowhere as bad as Rust or DayZ, filled with psychopaths!

A lot of the inventory, crafting and items in the game need work or are constantly changing!
Not enough meele weapons at the moment.
Breaking your leg from 4ft drops...seriously wtf
Getting your face mauled of by packs of zombified dogs...biggest risk while first starting they are too fast!
Dated graphics: hopefully this will change soon.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of reviewers can't seem to read: It's early access - what did you expect!? Do not buy if you expect everything to work well.
Some things need work and time. It's not easy coding these things. You are not gonna get a highly polished game yet. It also takes money to hire people like: artists, coders, etc.

How my first game went down:

Day 1:
Spawn next to town, got some nice supplies.
Get attacked by dogs there.
Too tired to run or fight well
Oh sh*t.jpg
Get corned by zombies -clever girl.jpg
Fists do nothing
Get face nomed off by dogs

Respawn
Have nothing
spend 10 minutes punching plants for fibers
I hate everything.jpg
Get sticks, feather and stones
Craft bow, arrows and axe
Come at me bro.jpg
Go back kill sorry SOBs and get my sh*t back
F*ck yeah.jpg

Dehydrated and starving now.
Find water, accidentally drink it
Get sh*ts.
Night is coming - get to teh choppa.gif
need to cure with herbal tea
♥♥♥♥ers get fast at night -surprise buttsects
sh*tting while running, like a b*tch - run forrest run!.gif
jump off 4 ft ledge, break leg - almost die
Never go out at night again. ♥♥♥♥ that sh*t.jpg

Day 2:

Hole up in abandoned hospital
scavenge, Empty medicine cabinets everywhere.jpg
Find coolers with BEER though!
Get too drunk.
walk off part of stairs, break other leg (wtf not even 2nd level) - FML.jpg
Starving, accidentally ate old sandwhich
Get the sh*ts.... again
Jump off potted plant while scavenging
Break leg...again. - That's it I'm out stewie.gif
Found a cooking pot.
Build campfire at last
finally brew herbal tea
Have 2 HP left

Might attract zombies with my swamp @ss - FoulBachelorFrog.jpg

I'm still alive mothaf***as.GIF
Still alive XD

Was found by zombies and ran into a random house on the street screaming into the microphone for assistance from friends.
Then proceeded to stay in a dark corner of said random house and cried as I went from "sensed" to "unsensed" for the next 10 minutes.
Friends found me, but was too frightened to come down until Day 3.

You could say that I'm a wimp.

Do I wish to recommend this game? Yes.
Look further down for a longer explanation.
I recommend this game, simply because the game is brilliant and it only gets better with multiplayer. This is a great game for you and your friends and you are gonna have a good time. However, this is not a perfect game at all and I will list my impressions of this game so far (remember it's early access, things can change).

+
You can play alone, with friends on LAN and on servers
Game cointains Navezgane-map and random generation. Navezgane will be boring to play after a while because you will get to know the map quite well. Random generation, however, will create your world entirely random as for landscape and prefabs via a seed system like in Minecraft.
Many recipes for craftable items for building, weaponry, armory, food, drink, medicin. You start with basic recipes and will unluck some as you find recipe books.
Smart gravity, fitness and quality system makes the game a lot of fun; even after 10 hours because the world feels alive, you can improve your stamina, so there is a reason for playing it awhile and the quality range as for weapons and tools makes many items unique and rewards the player for her/his hard work.
Many lootable places such as houses (small ones, tall ones, big ones), waste bunkers, cinemas, supermarkets, shopping carts, vaults, weapon shops, gas stations, banks and apartment buildings.
Different types of enemies: Zombies (feral zombie, slow zombie, fast zombie, nurse zombie, spider zombie), dogs, bees. There are animals as well (although they're not aggressive. Bears will come in an update soon, though)

-
The game is not optimized at all, even after switching to Unity 5 (the engine on which the game is build).
Even on a high-end pc, this game won't look particularly beautiful, at best it will look decent.
Different bugs (which might/might not be fixed) such as: Texture flickering, extreme impact from small jumps resulthing in sprained or broken legs, some zombie bodies will bug out (you'll know when it happends).
There are too many server wipes and not enough people to fill out the variety of servers.

Final conclusion and a comment:
Currently, the game is 8/10 in terms of overall quality. Play it for gameplay and content, not graphics. Otherwise, you will be disappointed. As for my final comment, I will talk a little about the developers: The Fun Pimps. The game is, as you might already know, in early access and it is being updated frequently. These updates are big updates cointaining huge chances such as Unity 5 and random generation, but also smaller updates addressing bugfixes and improvents. In other words, the updates are very various. However, as for the developers, communication isn't what they do best. When they wanted to switch to Unity 5, it took months and many people was frustrated because of the lack of information on steam. However, if you are interested in their project, whether you have the game or not, check out their tumblr account. Look for Joel Huenink on Tumblr and youtube and you will get an insight as to what they are currently working on.

This is one of the best zombie survival games I've played thus far. It is very action packed, the choices for difficulty are nice and the crafting system is excellent. When you start a new game or join someone else’s, you will randomly start somewhere out in the middle of nowhere and then it’s up to you to find shelter, water and supplies.

Grab a stick off a bush, some rocks and grass to craft a basic axe. Then use that axe to chop down some trees. Use the wood from the tress to make yourself a basic wooden bow and then craft you some arrows from feathers, sticks and more rocks. From there the possibilities are endless.
Hunt down some deer for the meat and leather. Make some basic armor to protect yourself. But watch out, those zombies are hungry and they will smell the bloody meat on you and hone in on your location.

Is night coming? You better run like hell to the nearest shelter and stay as quiet as you can, the zombies will become crazy aggressive and start to actively hunt players. Note to self: They run faster than you do! =( So you better not get spotted!

I do wish there was more to do in the game; more animals, more things to craft and deconstruct for parts. Maybe even some NPC's to do some basic quests for. When you go into a town and its completely empty and you are all alone and there is no one around for miles it just seems too unrealistic.
Get some screaming NPCs begging for you to save them in exchange for some basic supplies to liven and realistify the game up!

Other than that I would have to say that this game is definitely a thumbs up for me. I play on a server with like 6 other friends and we have PVP turned on. You just have to be careful. If you die on my server you will spawn back at your sleeping bag or random location if you don't have a sleeping bag and all your stuff will be sitting pretty in a backpack just waiting to be stolen by someone else.
Better hide your claimblocks too. Those be some great things to build your base with =)

This game is basically DayZ combined with Minecraft, except with the crafting system being a lot more complex. I especially like the construction aspect of this game because instead of putting random blocks down, you put wood frames down to support whatever you are building. If you don't, your whole project might come crashing down on top of you. :)

Its a fun but stressful survival game. Just when you think its safe zombies break through the walls and kill you.

Honestly, I have never found a better zombie survival game. Want to build your own epic base? Done. Want to break the ENTIRE map for some odd reason? Done. The game incorporates MANY features from other zombie games, but also introduces many more. Im not going to go into a bunch of detail because there are already many reviews for that. The games to great to explain, it has active devs that listen to the community and each update keeps bringing more to the table. All in all, go get the game for yourself and realize why its so great.
