In this continually evolving title currently in alpha stage development, players must explore the open world alone or with friends to build tools, weapons and shelter against the dangers of the reanimated dead, infected wildlife and the world itself.”

“7 Days to Die achieves exactly what it sets out to be. It’s a fun and intense post-apocalyptic sandbox with all the right mix of base-defense, scavenging, and exploration.”
8.3 – Shoost

“7 Days to Die is like Minecraft with Gravity. Building defenses with friends and huddling in the corner hoping no zombies get through can be great fun. But what keeps me coming back to the game is the TNT.”

“7 Days to Die looks genuinely impressive, and I can’t see this not making a huge impact when it arrives.”

Honestly when I first heard of this game a year ago I was certainly sceptical of what seemed to be another sandbox centric game that was coming in the wake of success from games like Minecraft. I /didn't give another thought to it until a year later, during finals week of my spring semester, when a friend of mine let me play it on his account, and let me tell you I have been completely impressed. So impressed in fact that I decided to purchase the game for myself, and even in it's alpha the game has been a worth while investment. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the survival genre and if you're into zombies, then all the better. I also reccomend this game to thos who feel that the crafting process of the current survival games dominating the market are too stream lined, because this will most likely give you the challenge you've been looking for. And to anyone who has a problem with the game other than its premise or game style, keep in mind that at least right now the game is still in alpha, and there will be more than one or two mis-steps before the final product. Overall, this game deserves and has earned a solid 9/10, in my opinion.

So I'm making this review specifically to counter the people saying "They should work on polishing the features they put in instead of putting in new ones that break the game". These people have no clue how programming works, or what an Alpha is. Polishing up exisiting systems is something you do in a Beta, not an Alpha. In an Alpha you're still adding in the systems planned out for the game, and each time you introduce a new one it's bound to break something, so while you squash bugs when you see them, the real focus in an Alpha is making all the systems, not polishing them. If you have a problem with buggy games and aren't just the type to deal with it and carry on, then don't buy the game until it enters it's Beta stage (or maybe even final release), period.

Also if you think the dogs are impossible you need to seriously get good.

Now for my real review:
For me Minecraft, while a fun concept, always got boring because once I've built whatever lovely building or statue I wanted to build there was absolutely no purpose to it from then on other than my vanity. 7 Days to Die is amazing becuase it's harsh world and the 7th day hordes that come for you give you a damn good reason to build and maintain structures. Add to it the survival elements and other planned features and you have what in my opinion is already the best Zombie game ever made, and one that is frankly only getting better as they add more features. Once it's finished this game will be a monster.

I've logged a long time with this game, playing both solo and with friends. It's a solid experience but it's clearly still being worked on so my recommendation is twofold: 1) only buy this game now if you can deal with bugs and your progress getting wiped every time a new major Alpha comes out. and 2) Keep in mind that as an alpha this game is a resource hog, so don't think that you can get by with the minimum specs. If your computer can't handle it or you don't want to deal with bugs then give this game a pass until it at least reaches Beta.

Other than not being finished and having the bugs you'd expect from an Alpha, the game is quite fun, and even more so with friends so if you can get past it's current state I'd highly recommend it. Like I said though, when it's finished it will be amazing, so you might just want to wait for that as well.

all in all, 7 days to die is a fun game. the bulk of my play time was pre alpha 12. the reason being is that after alpha 12 the game sort of broke. I dont know if it has been fixed since then but i will say that before that the game was worth 100 hours of my time. Maybe ill update the game to the new alpha and try it out. a note to the devs: flesh out and polish your exsiting mechanics and features that brought everyone to your game and THEN work on adding insignificant fluff content.

UPDATE!: i reinstalled the game and updated and i dont think i can recommend this game at its current stage. it is terribly optimized for a game that has been in development for so long. I am running an 6th gen i7 and an nvidia gtx 970 with 16 g of ram. when i am in the burnt forest biome i am getting 20 fps at best. that is absolute dog ♥♥♥♥. this game used to run fine on my macbook. lol this team has a lot of work to do. until then i cant recommend this game to anyone.

The update that was supposed to save the game - the one that added minibikes - is actually the patch that made me stop playing.

Its a horrid, buggy mess. The best version of this game was DEFINITELY alpha11. Hands-down.

It's too bad, because he's finally getting around to adding features that would have been nice. It's too bad that the entire flow/balance of the game is totally ruined now especially with all the quality/leveling mechanics.

Really disappointed with how much worse this game is than when I bought it.

game in alpha forever. horde mechanism is still broken. player have no effective mechanism to deal with running dogs (except dropping wooden spikes...). just latching on any popular game mechanic attracting a large player base (voxel environemnt/leveling system/weapon crafting) without polishing existing features. this game has been regressing its long term playability since my purchase and has been introducing dozens of fluff features that attracts new players. devs are a bunch of trolls.

Day 1
Installed game... So begins my downfall
Believed I had read/watched enough to survive at least my first night
Spawned into a snowy biome, the horror of murphies law
Attempted to find shelter, found a cabin and went inside
Was set upon by 3 zombies, from outside. Not sure what you call the lumberjacks, but <insert explative followed by zombie>
Made it to the roof, and to my left was what looked like brown grass
Jumped down and ran for it
Turned out to be radiation zone <insert string of explatives>
Died from radiation, better than zombies I guess.....
Day 1 still (night not far away by this point 3pm in game time), will try again. Hopefully die to starvation next, anything but zombies....

10/10 would die horribly again

I have owned this game since the ground was Minecraft cubes. I have a million (okay, that's hyperbole) other games and this is the one I always keep coming back to. I've watched as the land has smoothed out, a skill tree has been added, trees and zombies have been beautified, and additional zombies have been added, among other things.

If you are listening to a review from someone who has recently downvoted because of an upgrade, keep in mind that The Fun Pimps are constantly monitoring player feedback and responding to it. Ultimately, this is an alpha and there will be times when things happen that take away an aspect of the game that you are used to or that is part of your usual play style, but you can try a new play style for a while then return to it when it's reintroduced after The Fun Pimps are able to respond to the complaints.

Now, how about some pros and cons from someone who has some real gameplay in?

Pros:
Continual work from The Fun Pimps. I don't think any other alpha can boast this kind of attention from its creators.

Certain levels of hilarity.

You can make Lucille!

The game runs beautifully on my $500 laptop that is overloaded with programs for college.
Creative play

Biome Variety

Skill Improvement Increases Damage, Item Quality, Access to New Skills.

Building materials respond to zombie damage in a logical manner.

Physics are logical.

Choice of randomly generated world or predetermined world.

POIs everywhere to loot.

Many challenging things to craft and improve.

New quests to be accepted or not.

Zombies aren't the only things to hunt.

You're never truly safe.

Combat requires technique and improves with practice.

Today is my last day of finals (Okay, not relevant to 7 Days to Die, but definitely a pro in my life).

Cons (Build 14.8)

You have to kill dogs (Yeah, it should be on doesthedogdie/gaming.com (I made the gaming part up...the website just exists for movies).

Caves can be too steep leading to unexpected injuries and difficulty leaving.

I had a couple of games where zombies just disappeared and wouldn't spawn, despite setting enemy spawn rate to the max.

Water slows you when walking through it and I think that swimming should be faster than walking.

Temperature system is still wonky.

Bears. I hate bears. Bears are sneaky jerks that don't fight fair.

Verdict:

If you don't like change, don't get this, or any other Alpha game.

If you don't have patience, don't get this, or any other Alpha game.

If you don't like challenging combat, don't get this game.

If you like variety and seeing how a game grows over time, get this game.

If you like the idea of going from a guy or gal in his or her underwear to a survival king or queen, get this game.

If you like creating things that become better and better quality as time passes, get this game.

I bought 7 days to die for myself and a friend in a Post-Final exams splurge.
Accidentially pulled a 24-hour gaming session. Barely survived zombies on day 14 tunneling underneath our base, forcing us to go out into the night.

It's almost needless to say that this game has captured my attention and my heart.
tl;dr
I wholeheartedly recommend this game, even though it is in alpha.

This is my list of pros and cons, as of 5/12/16:

PROS
  • Amazingly immersive gameplay.
  • Incredible diversity of crafting options.
  • Scavenging feels intense and exciting.
  • Power-gathering materials is immensely rewarding and oddly calming.
  • Good balance between realistic and simple mechanics for
  • Vast options for difficulty settings, not just in terms of combat, but also regarding death penalties, loot rarity, Length of daylight, in-game time compared to real life time settings, and much more. You'll never feel that this game is "too easy".

CONS
  • /STACK OVERLOAD
  • /STACK OVERLOAD EXCEPTION
  • DOGS, MAN. If you get an unlucky spawn and find yourself being chased by dogs before you have at least a level 100 bow, you're dead.
  • Melee combat needs tweaking for hit detection and range, ESPECIALLY on multiplayer.
  • Ranged weapon aimpoints need adjustment (not aligning with weapon).
  • Rare Glitch: Corpses disappearing immediately after killing zombies.
  • Occasionally, Enemy Pathing leads them to eitirely avoid

Probably the best survival & crafting game ever made. You can never get bored, there's always something to do and gives you the "just one more turn"-ish kind of addiction. Although still in Alpha i can 100% say that i've seen games released by major studios in a way worse state than this "alpha". Very active developers, releasing patches very often.
If you want a game that's really about survival, building and crafting - this is the one.

Pros:
-Tons of items, recipes, weapons, zombies, animals, food, plants, clothes, armor, building pieces, and more to loot/build/explore/kill.
-Many hours of things to do.
-In-depth survival features such as hunger, thirst, stamina, temperature, armor, injuries and illnesses, with various buffs that affect most of these things.
-A true sandbox where you can build anywhere you like. Dig underground, repair and reinforce an existing building, or build an all new structure. Upgrade your build from wood to scrap to concrete etc.
-Challenging zombies.
-A nice crafting system.
-A persistent character progression system where you can allocate points into areas you want to specialize in. This adds quite a bit of longevity to the game IMO.

Cons:
-Wot.

7 Days to Die is one of my favorite games. The devs have done a great job. They communicate with the community(even accepting help from the community to fix/shape the game), and almost every new milestone alpha build feels like a brand new game(really, look at the first few releases of the game and compare them to now---quite an amazing difference IMO). I think this game deserves way more publicity and players. Hopefully the console release will fix that. It gets a lot of flack for its graphics but I don't think it looks that bad honestly.

Awesome game! It's a great game to get 2-4+ friends together and batton down the hatches. There's various roles to play which can be done solo, or divided among your friends.. Everything from Looting towns, crafting items, building a base, mining ect.. I have a game with a few buddies we've probably each put 50+ hours into and keep exploring/ making new Forward Operating Bases. There's something new around every corner to keep you entertained.

Fun builder game with zombies and decent physics. Can really be nerve wracking when you're new at this... and sometimes it can be hard to start out. Beware of dogs.

The biggest nit-pick is that it seems the devs are intent on making this more and more brutal with each iteration. Oh, new build? Let's see what they did. Oh look, dogs still don't obey the movement speed that can be set, and the harder zombies seem to be getting even tougher.

At least they got rid of the need for books---in some cases. It'd be nice if they'd get rid of it completely.

Still would recommend---it's constantly being worked on and is shaping up to be one of the best builder/survival games to date.

It got this game a while ago and honestly didn't really like it too much, but that was probably because I was new to the whole craft/survival thing, and the game did not do a great job at making it easy to understand how to survive, but now the game is very friendly to start, and the crafting interface is extremely easy to understand even if you are picking up the game for the first time. With the added skill trees and the natural progression you gain from just doing random things such as using a bow or crafting is a really nice added feature.

The game definitely gives you chills, and you can't hide forever, The zombies WILL find you, and one night what ever little shack you decided to stay the night in will be destroyed and you will have to run while a horde of sprinting zombies chase you down. Hope you have good stamina or GGWP.

I did come across a nice place located in the middle of a river, (coordinates 580N, 70E) I've been shacking up here and it survived an attack from a horde, if you are having trouble this is definitely a good place to set up camp

Overall this is a very good game, and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a scary survival game.

Pro Tip: Don't fight bears.

"This game is ruining my life" is something I would say if i had one. :P

As it is, it is merely filling my days with great satisfaction as i struggle to survive in a brilliantly crafted environment complete with the worst freaking dogs you'll ever meet!!! I hate those friggin' dogs!

Tho this game is still in EA, and needs some minor bug fixes, (if I keep getting hit from 30 feet away and have to waste half my ammo on crawlers once this game reaches release, I may start raging and change this review) a little optimization, and a story line (for the hell of it since sandbox mode does me just fine), it is one of the best games I have played in my life.

The gameplay is almost enough to forgive the minor bugs and polish issues. (Bethesda seems to do ok with major releases that never see the quality this game has already reached in that regard, however)

Overall, I support this game in every way, as I have even put up a server for the first time with any game.

If you like survival and moderate crafting (this doesn't get complicated or strenuous), Open World looting and mining in a fully destructible world, PVE or PVP experience, then give this game a try. It won't disappoint.

Been wanting to invest time in this for years off and on. Review continues to be updated

As of this writing, 14.5 horde bug (feral horde spawning and running right for your X,Y cords every night) makes it near unplayable.
Bumped to experimental 14.6, feral bug seems fixes, but spawning still broken (such as spawning inside small house (15x15 blocks) you secured as you log in, or spawning on the street behind (5 feet away or so) just seconds after you checked). Feral Walkers on day 21 absurd jump in difficulty for two lvl 30 players (5 shotgun blasts to the face meant nothing for them).
Even watched a zombie spawn (14.5 build) inside the back yard in the Land Claim Block footprint, walk into the house, up the stairs, break down bedroom door, and walk to and start hitting land claim block while we followed him 4-5 blocks behind.

Fun voxel game I think, but continuely plagued by really bad Zombie AI and spawn/generation. The game really has two strong selling points, the crafting/minging/building aspect, and the zombie survial aspect. Sadly, the buggy latter completely invalidates the former.

I bought this game some time ago and enjoyed my time with it, even though I had trouble running it on my rig at the time.
Recently I decide to reinstall it to see how much it's changed and, honestly, it's worse than I remember it. The optimization is no better than it was a year and a half ago, running like hot garbage on my rig which more than meets the recommnded specs. The mouse sensitivity is all sorts of messed up no matter what setting it's on, some of the textures honestly look worse than whan I originally bought it, the new crafting system is needlessly complex, the combat is absolutely awful, and I just can't recommend this game to anyone looking to buy it for $25. I really miss what the game was a year and a half ago because, honestly, it's not worth it.

The game is every bit as brutal and unforgiving as many have said it is. The crafting system is one of the best around for this type of game. It is deep and immersive. I'm still very much getting the hang of it and getting my ♥♥♥♥ chewed up by zombies, so at this time the game may as well be called 1.5 Days To Die.

This is a fun game but it gets quite old after a few hours of straight gameplay. I wish they would add more traps and more unique zombies but they have done a wonderful job for a indie game, 9/10 would buy again.

If you like the building Genre (Minecraft), you'll like this game. If you like Zombie Genre (DayZ), you'll like this game. The graphics aren't fantastic by any stretch, but the gameplay is very fun, and this game has a ton of replay value for sure.
