1.1.19 - Balance + Stability Update

I'm experimenting with some new content for TowerFall, but I took a break to put together this quick update. It's mostly about tying up loose ends, on both the design and tech sides of the game :)

We've got one new variant: Regenerating Shields. It should help beef up the 3v1 juggernaut matches that seem to be popular lately. I'm excited to see what else it gets used for.

Balance changes include some tweaks to the Backfire levelset, and an important change to how Bottomless Treasure works that should improve 1v1 tournament play.

For stability I've improved the replay recording to help performance on weaker machines. See below for details!

Gameplay:

  • New variant: Regenerating Shields
  • Powerups spawned from the bottomless treasure chest will now timeout and despawn after 5 seconds
  • Rebalanced a few Backfire versus mode level layouts
  • Removed Start with Super Bomb Arrows from the random variants pool

Stability:
  • Went back to using XNA on Windows
  • Added option to set replay recording mode: Use GPU, Use CPU, or Off. Use GPU is now the default (was previously done on CPU) and should be faster on most systems
  • Added option to disable controller rumble
  • Added option to disable controller discovery, and removed startup argument that did the same thing. If you were using the startup argument, you'll have to go to the options menu to disable it again
  • Fixed the Matt Makes Games intro being out of sync with the music when vsync is disabled

1.1.18 - Mac and Linux launch + New Variants + Shirts!

We launched TowerFall Ascension on Mac and Linux today! We also added 5 new variants, most based on player suggestions.

Plus Fangamer released official TowerFall shirts and stickers this week!

The new Variants:
Speed Boots - Run 40% faster! Works great with Encumbrance as well
Regenerating Arrows - If you're out of arrows, wait 1.5 seconds and you'll magically gain one
Anti-Gravity Arrows - Arrows never fall, and always seek
Small Quivers - Reduces your max arrow count to 3
Infinite Drills - Drill arrows will drill through every surface they hit, forever

Now we're up to 75 variants :D As always your feedback has been super helpful - have fun!

  • On Windows, switched the game to SDL2 and MonoGame (thanks to Ethan Lee). This should lower the system requirements, improve gamepad support, and help with porting. You can still play the XNA version by switching to the 'xna' game branch

About This Game

TowerFall Ascension is the definitive version of the hit archery combat game. Inspired by classics from the golden age of couch multiplayer, it's a 4-player local party game centering around hilarious, intense versus matches. The core mechanics are simple and accessible, but hard to master and combat is fierce. Loot treasure chests for game-changing power-ups, master the art of catching arrows out of the air, or descend on your foes and stomp them into submission. TowerFall is best played competitively with friends, cross-legged on the floor within punching distance of each other.

New in Ascension is the 1- or 2-player co-op Quest mode. Players work together, fighting off a variety of monsters and enemy archers across the land of TowerFall. It's a new adventure to explore when you don't have more friends handy to square off against.

New features in TowerFall Ascension include:
  • Brand new 1- or 2-player co-op Quest mode
  • 50 additional Versus arenas, for a total of 120 unique maps

I consider this a must own for anyone who typically plays games with friends in the same room. The cooperative Quest mode is challenging and fun, while the competitive Head Hunter and Death Match modes bring in some fierce action. The secrets and endless combinations of arrows, treasure, and wacky options make for a unique match every time.

Understand :
1) this is a controller game; KB controls are fine.. just not practical
2) learn your jumps

I die a little inside for every friend of mine that does not own Towerfall.

Admittedly, you could justify not wanting to buy TF because of getting the most out of the main attraction, Local Multiplayer, requires a mobile comp solution as well as 2+ controllers. But you have to understand that:

a) TF more than accomplishes the role of being the go to "mobile comp; 2+ controllers"-type game.
b) TF: Ascension, introduces Quest-Mode and Trial mode that provide excellent opportunities to single-player train while friends aren't around.
c) Quest Mode is so good a challenge that it could stand on its on. We all came looking for the multiplayer but finishing Quest Mode with all red/gold skulls will make you a master multiplayer competitor master.

TF contains many more subtleties that you will come to love and adore. I dare not spoil you.

This is a great game!
It was the Ouya seller for quite a while and finally came to PC.
Grab your friends, get your controllers out and have a blast.

This is a fast-paced multiplayer platformer focused on reacting quickly to the other players and the changing environment. I have yet to play a game without laughing and getting punched.

Con: local multiplayer only
Pro: everything else

The best 'couch' experience on PC. Easy to pick up with a fairly high skill ceiling, tight controls and tighter design.

Don't consider buying this if you don't have friends to play with and controllers for them to use.


Controls can't be rebound without the use of additional software and some controllers don't play nice.

As a game designer, I'm sad that I have to live in a world where my entire job and sustenance is based on my ability to convince people to buy and play my games when they could be playing Towerfall instead. I can't really capture everything that I love about it into concise statements; it's bigger than life, it brings people together. I've forged strong friendships over this game. Heck, people want to be my friend just because I have it.

It doesn't matter who you are or what kind of games you like. It doesn't even matter if you've never liked a game before. You will have fun playing Towerfall.

And it looks awesome. And the soundtrack kicks ♥♥♥. Oh, and the sounds? The way every archer has a different synthetic "voice" so I can tell who's shooting and who's killed even when my eyes are closed? The way the jester makes one of three possible jingle sounds when he crouches?? Ugh. Everything about this game, every detail big and small. It's so good.

Bring controllers.
