Story


Out of breath, you run into the door, slamming against its cold metal surface. The clicking of scuttling claws recedes into the distance, swallowed by the pitch black oblivion behind you. You know better than to feel safe. There are too many infested at your back, and another blank metal door ahead. With a quick reflex you check your ammo supplies, and slot a fresh magazine into your shotgun. With a quicker prayer, you flick the switch and open the door. The metal jaws open on endless night you don’t dare pierce with your flashlight, not to disturb those things that live in shadow. By the pale bioluminescence that washes up from the floor grates, you piece together the picture of a corridor, and what could be a stretch of exploding pods. Just beyond, the silhouette of a fully grown crawler stirs.

Grinning in the dark, you turn on the weapon’s flashlight, and point it straight down the corridor. Predictably, the blisters swell up to full irritation, ready to explode at the slightest touch. The crawler turns to hiss at you, instantly aroused by the light, and your presence. In your mind’s eye, it dumbly rushes forward into the blister pods to kill itself, saving you precious ammo.

It takes a precious moment to adjust to reality when the sleek shape crouches and jumps towards you instead. There is time for just one panicked shot before the inevitable flight, as you run for your life, barely keeping ahead of the claws slashing for you. In a moment of adrenaline-fuelled inspiration, you slam the wall panel as you retreat past the chamber’s door. The heavy, powerful mechanism smoothly slices the crawler in half just before the critter can reach and disembowel you. There is no time to congratulate yourself, as you hear a familiar hissing from above...

Трудно вообще сказать что-либо хорошее, так и резко негативное в сторону этой игры. Нет, нет, она не плохая...но довольно-таки банальная и предсказуемая.
Что представляет из себя игра? Сюжет особой интригой и яркостью не блещет, вы просыпаетесь после долгого криосна как один из последних выживших корабля, после заражения( привет, мертвый космос!) и ищите способы побега. Игра очень линейна, в основном вы будете бегать по однотипному коридору всю игру, время от времени переходя в другие локи, которые представляют из себя тот же самый набор коридоров, дверей и лифтов только с другим названием. Однако, порой карту глючит и у вас нету маркера цели, вот тут и начинается самое интересное! Блуждание по одной той же локе, бесконечное катание на лифте туда-сюда, побегушки с мобами и т.д.
Перестрелки с мобами, в какой-то степени имеют баланс несмотря на однотипность. По сути схема простая, видите моба-отходите назад и шмаляете в них тем, что у вас есть. Но благо уничтожение мобов не требует большого кол-ва времени, не вызывает чувства когда же закончится кошмар,к тому же предметы окружения(бомбы, двери-кстати самое имбовое оружие) тоже могут убивать их, что безусловно игре идет в +
Атмосфера у игры просто отличное для платформера. Ошметки трупов, улья, все еще работающие конвееры и все это приправлено хорошей игрой освещения. К тому же на реакцию противника влияние света напрямую. Светишь в улей с фонарика? Отлично, получай постоянный спавн мобов. Светишь в яйца? Пожалуйста, мобы вылупляются и несутся к тебе на всех порах.
Оптимизация. Тут довольно трудно что-либо сказать но графоний хороший для платформера. На высоких были проседания фпс поэтому выставил на минимум. Собственно, ничего не изменилось, кроме появившихся контуров вокруг персонажа, окружающий мир не изменился и получил хороший прирост к фпс.

Игра рекомендуется к покупке со скидкой и для любителей собирать ачивки. Кстати говоря, у этой игры карточки довольно дорогие, от 0,2 до 0,35 бакса за карточку. Зато фоны изображения крутые, космос, вселенная и т.д. Ах да, некоторые фоны этой игры стоят по 3 или 8 бакса.

З.Ы. На некоторых старых обзорах пишут про концовку и что она ужасная. Подтверждаю, у игры раньше была проблема с концовкой, у автора не хватило денег и просто после захода в одну из комнат выходила гора текста. Со временем проблему решили, запилив новую. Так что, не переживайте за нее (=

Неплохая игра для фанатов Flashback и пр.
Играется легко, идея у игры хорошая (свет и действия с ним). Локации в игре на среднем уровне, но учитывая, что герой передвигается предпочтительно в темноте - наверное это не очень критично. Хотя есть и достаточно красивые места.
Разновидность врагов не впечатляет, ловушки и задания на уровне того же Flashback.
Огромным плюсом является наличие версии для Linux.
Единственный минус - концовка игры продумана не до конца, но тому есть известные причины: разработчики не собрали достаточно средств и проект был свернут. Хотя стоит отдать должное - даже после этого они сделали вменяемую концовку.

To any of my friends that I encouraged to purchase this title,

Hopefully none of you wasted your money on this. The storyline is great as well as the concept of the game and the artwork is good. The ships computer voice which narrates the game is awesome. now here comes the negativity.

-horrible feel to the controls
-clunky and sloppy aiming controls
-crafting system is very bland as there are only 3 types of upgrade which are global to a very small array of weapons and items to chose from
-interface with crafting system is clunky at best
- BUGS BUGS BUGS as PC model is prones to getting hung up or just plain stuck in certain points in the terrain, "in world controls'' such as elevator swithches sometimes just flat out do not work where the did previously

If the developers went back through and fixed this stuff up it would be an excellent title.

VERDICT: Dark Matter is a potential gem of a sci-fi themed story driven platformer. I mean it oozes style and class, something that most indies dont bother with. Unfortunately it died prematurely as a result of stillbirth, for the game was released unfinished due to a lack of funding. After receiving alot of bad press in the steam forums the developer revisited the game and gave it a hurried cutscene ending to provide minimal closure.

If I had to describe the game it has a System Shock vibe, with story similarities and exploration style even if this game is side-scrolling. If you've played The Fall then this will feel familiar. Its pretty short and uncomplicated but you will have to pay attention when you are navigating its levels. Some areas will need to be revisited when you have better equipment. The fifteen or so levels provide enough of a challenge with their varying their size and complexity which are populated with respawning enemies to keep combat satisfying. Basic crafting allows medical packs and advanced ammo types to be created.

Overall its a real shame the game is in this state because the core elements which were experienced, hinted at an excellently paced action game with a interesting story and enticing exploration, with a fair amount of equipment to interact with. What I particularly enjoyed was listening to the cold if sympathetic voice-over of the ships computer, guiding you on your journey to discover what happened during your time in stasis.

Dark Matter may fall short of what was promised though not through a lack of effort from the developer. I would dearly love to recommend the game but only consider purchasing if you are okay with it being essentially an extended demo, albeit a decent one and when on sale. Otherwise I would have recommended it wholeheartedly. Maybe one day someone will create something similar or complete the job. I hope so! :)

01. GENRE: A side scrolling sci-fi themed quest-driven platform shooter.

02. SETTING: On board an alien infested spaceship in the outer reaches of space.

03. STORY/BACKGROUND: You are the sole surviving member of a spaceship infested with by a deadly alien race that has killed your crew and taken control of the ship. Awoken from statis by the ships A.I. [reminiscent of the classic System Shock games] you must set out to explore the shop, collect the equipment and weapons, interact with vital ships systems in the eventual hope of destroying the enemy.

04. GAME MODES: Would have been great to have experienced the full story-based campaign. It really just needed more levels.
+ What there is, is actually fun to play. If only for a short while.
- Single short campaign consisting of x number of joined levels.
- Unfortunately incomplete due to the developer rushing the game out earlier than planned. Likely to ruinning out of money.

05. GAME/LEVEL DESIGN: Overall GOOD.
+ Only the developer(s)/designer(s) know how their vision would have panned out. What there is of it hints of a fanastically designed game.
+ Starts of with nice small refined levels.
+ Beautifully drawn and lighted locations.
+/- Faced with harder enemies when revisiting certain areas.
- To much retracing your steps, if you get lost or loose
- Becomes a mess of criss-crossing routes to get to objectives.
- Interface doesnt do enough to help player remember where they have been. Causing some confusion. Despite having a decent mini-map.

06. GAMEPLAY/MECHANICS: AVERAGE.
+ Exploration is the game's best feature by far. I mean who doesnt love slulking across an alien infested ship alone right!?
+ Scavenging scrap from dead enemies and searching lockers adds another dynamic to crafting.
+ Weapon and equipment, upgrading and crafting.
+ Boss combat is satisfying especially with the heavy weapons such as assault rifle and grenade launcher. :)
- Simplistic combat inc: Wayward aiming, audio prompts.
- Terrible multiple enemy spawning, sometimes on top of you.
- Needs more interaction with the ship systems, terminals and dead bodies.
- More RPG elements for the character also would have been good.

07. ENEMIES: GOOD.
+ A nice selection of different enemies with their own abilities.
- Im sure we would have seen more with a fuller game. Oh well!

08. A.I: FUNCTIONAL.
+/- Okay if a little minimal. Enemies spawn and attack when your character gets to close, there is to light etc.

09. CONTROLS: FUNCTIONAL.
+/- K/M they work without issue.
- Targeting seems a little lacksidacical as enemies can reach you faster than you can align the mouse to your targets.

10. GRAPHICS: GREAT.
+ Along with exploring the ship and audio, its its best feature. The engine creates some smooth, colourful and quite beautiful backdrops.
+ Light auras and glow are used to great effect providing a dark, moody, sombre and somewhat eery asethetic.

11. AUDIO: GREAT.
+ Minimal but captures the mood perfectly.
+ Movement, firing weapons, squigging through alien environment are all impeccably done. Together they add up to enhance the overall aesthestic.
+ The dialogue expunging narration of the ship central A.I. is excellent. One of the best Ive heard in a while.

12. CHALLENGE/DIFFICULTY: GOOD.
+/- The gameplay is fairly basic as you would imagine in a platformer. Despite it being an incomplete game the is just about enough to call the game a challenge.
+ Difficulty scopes very well.
+ The game is very forgiving as you auto-spawn if you die at the last save-point terminal used.

13. ACHIEVEMENTS: VERY GOOD.
+ Well-paced.
+ Varied, in type and difficulty.
- Only one achievement didnt appear to work properly. Kill x amount of crab aliens can be done in a few minutes though by standing next to a few chosen spawning holes.

14. ENJOYMENT/APPEAL: Given its incomplete state I think that Dark Matter will only appeal to fans of the genre (dark sci-fi/lone platformer.) Those who fancy a cheap game on sale might also be tempted. What there is of it was incredibly fun, apart from getting frustrated a few times when I lost my bearings.

15. PLAYTIME/LONGEVITY/REPLAYABILITY: Don't expect to get more than . Ten - twelve hours is more than enough to complete the game unless like me you get stuck alot and have to retrace your steps frequently.

16. ONLINE PLAY/COMMUNITY: Its singleplayer only. The community has long since been assimilated into the alien hive! ^^

17. SPECS/OPTIMIZATION: STABLE.
+ Nothing taxing for my Core i3/Radeon HD5700 PC. Low end PCs will be able to run it no problem.
+ I think I only suffered one CTD the whole game.

18. SUPPORT: NONE.
- Given the developer closed down dont expect any patches for the few bugs there. There is at least one game-breaking bug with an elevator that doesnt respawn if you die. If you dont have a previous recent save then youll have wasted alot of time.
- Expect no DLCs either. If they added some to extend the game I would definitely buy those however. Maybe Ill contact the dev!

19. PROBLEMS: Overall NEGLIGIBLE.
A few times changing level/room will bring up a blank screen but the save system is robust and you can load manually.

20. VALUE FOR MONEY: Unfortunately unless you really want to enjoy the game for what it is I would not recommend getting this game even on a sale. There just not enough of it. However if the genre and game features are enough for you to want to try it there is a very good game here. At least those funds may help the developer with their next game. :/

Avoid this.
Complete waste of time, dull mostly, repetitive and of course unfinished but I knew that, that is not reason for negative review.
But buggy as hell is The Reason!
Damn, I even cannot finish game because of one sealed door and yes they should be open-I checked on Youtube walkthrough.
So, last 10 minutes of game stays behind my reach...and last few achievements too.

Damn devs, you screwed this one baddly!
