"A unique, visually appealing, board-less update to Chess. While it takes little time to learn the basic mechanics of Hive; true mastery takes decades."

A whole anthill of updates!

As usual, we've been improving our Board Game Engine in the weeks since the previous update. We ended up with a large number of improvements. Hive was doing pretty well, so there was only one significant bugfix, but there are a lot of little improvements to polish more of the edges.

This release is for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

  • Fixed the occasional 1-second stutter in the UI. It would happen about once every 40 seconds & it appeared at the previous release. Really uncool... but totally fixed now.
  • The occasional disappearing buttons in the OGMS are fixed. In some rare cases, all of the buttons would be missing from that menu & you'd have to restart the game. That wasn't fun!
  • LogFile.log is no longer part of the build, so if you "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" in Steam, it won't make you download the logfile over again.
  • The BuildID is now in the log-file. This is useful for detecting if someone's Steam client is being stubborn and not upgrading their version of the game.
  • Upgraded to Steam SDK 1.34 (newest version).
  • 2D rendering improvements (mainly visible on the Rules and Online Game Menu Screen (OGMS) on slower computers, especially as we get more games in the OGMS at once.

Thanks for being along for the ride with us! Hive is our first game & it's been a lot of fun to keep updating it regularly since it's initial release back in March of 2014!

If you like Hive, please give us a rating on Steam :)

In the meantime, it seems that we now have more games going on in the Khet online lobby than Hive right now... we can fix that right? ;) I'm going to put Hive on sale, hopefully starting Aug 6th (tomorrow... or today if you read this in more than like... 20 minutes?). It's been a pleasure watching this game & the community grow! Thanks for the privilege! :D

BUGfix update

  • Fixed the "Rematch" functionality which hadn't worked correctly for online play since the move to BlueLine Cloud. Now it's good again.
  • Sliders were very finicky for clicking/dragging before. They work as expected again.

  • Each expansion can be turned on/off for any individual game. Play with these pieces online even if your opponent does not own the expansions! (they will also get to use the expansions during the game)

Love the board game and this is a good port. AI is decent enough, but seems to weaken with the added DLC, perhaps due to their complexity? Anyway, got it for 75% off ($4) and it was worth that. I waited for the sale because if I was going to pay $16, I may as well get a friend another board game of it and play offline.

Get it on sale at around $4-5 and you won't be disappointed. You may even want to get the board game version and rejoin the real world (ok maybe not).

Hive is a fantastic game, and this is a pretty good implementation. However, there is some minor wonkiness with the interface:
1. You can't pan around because it really isn't necessary, but this causes an effect with some tile placements where you have to find the portion of the tile at the top which isnn't being obscured by other text.
2. There are announcements that are displayed when a move repeats a previous hive configuration that are very distracting and practically useless because they obscure the playfield.
3. The developers used this 3D zoom-out display mechanic that automatically scales the playfield to hold the tile configuration, even when there is only one huge tile on the playfield at the very beginning of the game.

Despite these minor problems, the game is very enjoyable and is the perfect distraction for ten minutes between other activities.

Great boardgame!

This is an abstract game, with easy to learn rules, but with as much depth as Chess, or Go.
Put some thought into your moves, and you'll have a wonderful time with this game :)
