800+ hours in Wargame Red Dragon
hundreds of hours on previous wargames.

This is one of the best, if not the best real time strategy ever made.

Wargame has many realistic features such as: ammo, gasoline, morale, veterancy, supplies, recon, with countless possibilities and methods of securing victory, which fit nicely making this a realistic game, while not too complicated.

The game has a steep learning curve, but if you want to play the best RTS out there, you have to get this game!

PS: The devs care about the community and suggested changes are sometimes implemented, especially if it benefits the gameplay, or balance, while staying as close to realism as possible.

Developer Eugen takes the RTS genre to a cold war gone hot. Gone is the concept of base building, and resource management. WG:RD introduces players to a realistic RTS unlike anything seen before. No longer will players contend with Actions Per Minute, but rather with tactics, units, and teamwork.

With a blistering amount of units (1500+) they've managed to capture the most minute, and accurate features of nearly every unit. Players will find themselves lost in the sheer number of statiscal difference while attempting to create the perfect army. The complex task of "deck building" becomes simplifed by a restrictions and bonuses. The more you limit your military the more you have available.

Graphically speaking WG:RD shines above almost all RTSs on the market. With almost painstaking authentic detail to units it's a shame to realize they are only utulized when fully zoomed in. The games scale makes it impractical to play any attention more than what's needed.

Although WG:RD is a shining example of the RTS genere; it does fall short with it's limited maps, and often sidelined naval battles. You'll easily find yourself playing the same maps time after time. Not necessarily a bad thing when you have 17 nations to choose from, and more FREE DLC along the way

Wargame: Red Dragon is an armchair generals wet dream. Pick it up today.

Graphics 7 Graphics could use a bit more work, infantry mostly need this work. Other than that the graphics are mostly solid.
Gameplay 8 Gameplay is pretty good. Requires strategy and a plan beforehand in order to win most battles. Requires thinking, requires patience. Most military units are made from real life counter-parts, adding into the realism this game delivers.
Overall 8 Wargame recieves a 8 from me because it is overall a great game with a few minor issues ( Mostly balancing issues and the community being a bit less friendly to new players.

This table is small because I couldn't think of anything else to add, most people just play multiplayer which is gameplay.

Absolutley love this game. I've loved RTS games since I was a kid playing C&C. I absolutley love the realism in vehicles and other units. The fact how I have thousands of units to pick from is amazing. Although this game does have some problems (Such as lag issues or other issues such as my motion blur) it still is a good game and I reccomend it to anyone interested in getting a good RTS game.

Highly realistic tactical RTS. The realism can lead to slow feeling matches, but the satisfaction of a properly executed bombing run has few equals. If you've ever wondered what would have happened if that cold war had gone hot; this is for you.

Wargame... what it does that word mean to you? Once a greatest contemporary RTS game... now it means another Call of Duty for... ehm... kids but in this case for 20+ y/o kids.
I have been fan of Wargame EE since I saw trailer on TV in 2012, but now I must admit it became sh!t not "the sh!t", but literally sh!t. I will present you a little comparison between EE, ALB and eventually RD. EE was first of its kind, RTS with beautiful maps, authentic units, interesting and innovating gameplay. I have spent many hours of my life playing amazing campaigns, where I was defending Vaterland from commie basturds, where I was dealing with counter revolutionists in Poland... and I don't regret any minute of this time (this is WRD review so nothing much bout EE here). Life was going on. Year later came AirLand Battle with PLANES, at this time I have been like, OMFG PLANEZ NOW THIS GAME IS PURFECT. Along with now maps that weren't flat as chest of 10 year old girl this was a major step forward. Gameplay did differ a lot, since any thread could be resolved now with planes and rivers ingame did matter a lot but werent game breaking. City battles were amazing with new block system, all these US Marines versus VDV, Jägers versus Motostřelci etc. Even with it downsides as reservist problem (danish haer havernomnom something if you remember), F-14/MiG-31 tryhards, early SOVJET STEAMROLLER T-72B1/T-64BM/BMPT/BURATINO and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ singleplayer it was good game. But in this time it was clearly visible that this game should be a GREAT standalone expansion pack and not just a GOOD game.
"Here comes the rage" aka "Now about Red Dragon". As any developer/publisher knows its much more profitable to release every year a new game, than updating old ones. First what everyone saw is obviously ships, but from the beginning I was skeptical about this... and i was right, the major selling point - the navy was (and still is) S.H.!.T., everyone expected F-14's taking off Nimitz to shoot down AShM Su-27's and then Iowa bombarding the battlefield (liek in World in Conflict!). But no. It was more like: ok lets use some LaFayettes and kongos to counter sovremenny's, in case they win call in some TRAMS, CF-18's and maybe some Super Pumas. In case when there is some river then spam some Monitor Zippo's and STRB's, oponent wont have how to counter 11 river boats for shure. Some tanks? Hellfire will pwn them like they are from paper. Some infantry? Monitor's napalm will give you smell of fried konkurs team. Planes or helis? Still no problem for you, coz blobbed 11 AAA canons will land it pretty fast. END. That was it... The Mighty Naval Feature (yep, instead of making something useful like towed weapons or playable campaign they made this).Overall, game feels like ALB with enlenghted (yes, i made up that word) timeframe. Now instead of Waffen SS Black PanzerDivision of Death consisting of Challengers, Leopards 2a4 and Abramses, you have to choose. Her Majesty Challenger 1+2's, or United forces of Freedom M1A* abramses, or combined Vichy France and Wehrmacht Leclercs and Leopards 2a5's. On other side vroom vroom T80UM and useless T72b upgrades. Now since last years where prototypes are accepted is 1996 we have some Star Wars techs already, for example Rafales using year 2000 Mira's, or year 2000 Caesar's too (guess in what country is developers HQ?), or North Korean T-90, omg devs apparently watched too much Kim Chong's propaganda. If we are talking about "Red Dragons" and "Blue Dragons", these factions are entirely made up by developers, because instead of making possible to use real advantages that these countries armies possesed in real life, for instead example human wave attacks of china they gave them some pewpew units that don't make sense from "authentic/realistic game" perspective that marketing departament of Focus Interactive tries to enforce. When Eugen first switched from mentioned realism to, ehm, balance, they started to including units that should never have been given to players for example other planes than ground attack ones and maybe some fighters (Mig-31's and B-5's are definitely out of frame here) or Patriot AA, srsly patriot in wargame, in MY wargame? One thing that bothers me is Eugene thinking they could fool us with "we are making you a big favor releasing FREE DLCs", from the beginnning i was in belief that even countries which should not be included in this war theatre would be updated immediately after release, but no, 40% of nations weren't updated, we had to wait another half year just to have some abandoned countries (GDR, CSSR, PLR) beign able to compete with factions updated from release. Now is 6th of November and Scandinavia countries are just plain useless. THANKS OBAMA, i mean, THANKS EUGEN. Lol, why were these countries included in first place, you might ask. Answer is people who play it are mainly from yurop and hurting your target audience is not a good idea. But when all resources were thrown on excellent navy feature, there was simply no time for minors. Eugene just killed two birds with one stone. Terms for updating were stretchered from March to...November! And also devs are looking like a knight in shining armor for giving player FREE DLC (FREE), for free. Blah blah blah, ur still readin? Maps are fabulous lookin from any distance, either from "tacticool height" and from close up, there are only two RTS's which could boast with it, and even here we see problem, instead of adding old maps from previous games, devs are making new ones, you might ask why? Because someone wasnt enought competent to do make map editor suitable for coverting own maps own games to different own games, lol. SO basically RD is ALB with new maps and new fancy units! First half of the year there were only 73 new models in RD, rest of "new" units were just fugly reskins of existing models so i wont glorify devs for it as reskining is relatively easy, personally, i made OVER 9000 HQ reskins (bulsht, i've done like 200 of them, you can chech my screenshots in profile or forums), so i have right to brag about, ehm, laziness of developers. Funny thing, EE was forgotten with no balance patches after ALB was released and ALB was lost in abyss of ignorance after RD seen the light of monitors, so guess what's gonna happen after Act of Agresssion (next Eugene game) will be released... yes you are right. At the time when i'm writing this wall of text, on virtual battlefields high end tank oneshots atgm team which is firing on it, mortars are shutting down any attempt of offensive, one spetsnaz squad is killing hundreds of enemies, meanwhile some cluster mlrs's are destroyng starting convoys, STRB's are pwning everything that has that bad luck of being 2500m near river, volley of patriot missiles from hedge near end of the map is shooting down another SEAD plane, while nordic vikings are bravely defending from combined power of whole soviet military somewhere in korea... Welcome to Wargame
Tl;dr Red Dragon is not bad game, just developers are still disappointing us. Check wikipedia for definition of expansion pack. If you have an opportunity, try this game. You should make your own opinion about this game, instead of reading pointless reviews on steam. Thats all and I'm going to get pwnd in RD again, so thanks for reading. Thrawn out.

Really good game. Needs practice and patience in order to be god at, but by far one of the most spectacular RTS ever made. Graphics are insane as well as gameplay itself. If you love wargames this is definitely a must.

The best real-time strategy game I have played in my life. Takes a bit of decking around to figure out what all the stats mean and how to abuse them in a nice deck, but when you beat your friend in a 1vs1 its oh so sweet. Try reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu if you're having problems, its in audiobook form. And I suggest you get some friends to play with you, the ones that roam the public multiplayer games can be very good. Whereas if you have friends that are as noob as you are, then you can win some, then they win some as they adjust their approach, then you win some because you adjusted your approach, etc. This is very rewarding gameplay.

The game is known for being as close to realism as possible, and strategically it actually is. You have to supply your troops and ships with ammo and rockets if you have a prolonged engagement (so your ships in naval battles need supply ships as a part of your deck). You also have to use infrantry in forests and buildings to spot and sneak up on the enemy (you can't shoot what you can't see, though you can shoot artillery at suspected locations).
The battles are very intriguing. You can't just rush ahead, because to win you have to kill a certain number of points worth of units, but if too many of your own units die then the enemy wins because they killed enough units before you killed enough units. This gives a very real feeling, because you have to take care of your troops as you would in real life. Each unit you get killed is another set of points for the enemy. The trick is to make each exchange worth it, so you take more points than you lose in the engagement. This is tricky, but very rewarding gameplay.

Pros: Everything, the only thing missing is a pure city map (unless I missed it). Just about every military asset in the world worth its paint is in the game, and there's endless replayability because no two engagements are the same. No base setup, no tedious setup of power-stations and resource harvesters, no tech-tree to worry about, no real unit cap that you'll ever approach (except in naval battles), there's a counter for everything if you only have the presence of mind to get it out when you need it (and managed to fit it into your deck).
Cons: It can be overwhelming, because there's so much to figure out. But this can be negated by playing with someone who begins playing at the same time as you, then you're on equal ground and will win every other match against each other as you figure things out.

For prospective buyers, here's what you need to know:

Pros
  • The game features a great number of nationalities, etc that are rarely (if ever) included in games with this sort of setting. Countries such as France, Canada, Norway, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and North Korea are fully playable with their own pallet of men and material to work with. The introduction of the Coalition deck type, which allows you to build your own army of units drawing from a pool of two or more countries, allows nations deemed to be 'minor' to join forces and in many cases become more relevant than the period giants of the United States and the Soviet Union.

  • Red Dragon maintains the playable nations and features of the previous titles. The setting being moved to Asia really just means they've added new nations, and the maps available for multiplayer have shifted to that setting, as well as a time line bump into 1991 for non-prototype units.

  • The units are acceptably rendered. Save for some model and texture nitpicks for grognards and military enthusiasts (ERA tiles in the wrong place, etc) the graphics are overall pleasant.

  • While the ranges of weapon systems represented in the game are by no means realistic, they are still measured in thousands of meters.

  • If you liked World in Conflict, this is the closest thing to a spiritual sequel you will have access to.

Cons
  • You may notice that in the above, I didn't mention the much-advertised naval component. Roughly 50% of this game's seling point, the naval game is completely botched. It's a sloppy mess with no direction, where the prime strategy is to huddle up your ships and pray that their combined CIWS can shoot down incoming missiles. There is no witty maneuvering involved. In multiplayer games, few players bother with the naval maps. And whose who do find an imbalanced implimentation where ComBlock ships objectively trounce NATO vessels every time due to more powerful anti-shipping missiles and better CIWS scores. Eugen is supposedly going to address these issues, but it has been over half a year.

  • Multiplayer community is measured in the hundreds, rather than the thousands one might expect from other genres. RTS games tend to struggle if it's not Starcraft or Company of Heroes. Because the game has boiled down to its hardcore online community, public games tend to be with people who are extremely experienced with the mechanics that will obliterate a new player without the new player having a chance to learn anything. This is definately a game to play with friends, unless you're an RTS pro or a masochist.

  • Modding support is on the low end of the spectrum. Modders can edit unit code and behavior, but there will be no mapping.

  • Previous titles in the franchise, I feel, had better maps.

Overall
I would recommend this game to anyone who has a passion for this era in history and 'what if' scenarios. There is an upcoming (free) DLC worth of content which may or may not address some of the cons I pointed out above. The relative scale of the game is something we don't get to see very often and promises a unique experience. Because the developers are planning to move on to a different franchise after development for Red Dragon ends, there is no fear of this game becoming 'obsolete' in a matter of months.

red dragon is great game to begin with but it relies on inf and air more then tanks and vehicals
its ship warfare is lackluster but the units in the game really give you the sense of that era from big nato armour to massed communist armour waves it keeps you on your toes 10/10

Very good. It has a steep learning curve, but once you get past that this game is awesome. The units and stratagy is amazingly realistic, and it's is generaly extreamly fun (even if my win rate is 20% XD).
