About This Game

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Features:

  • Shovel Knight’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.
  • The systems of today also give Shovel Knight modern touches: detailed animation, multilayered parallax backgrounds, and evolved game design.
  • Perfect your platforming skills as you take down each of the knights of the Order of No Quarter.
  • Flip enemies! Leap over gaps! Duel with foes! Dig up treasure! Find Secrets! Upgrade! Shovel Knight is simple to learn and play, but challenge lies everywhere.
  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake "Virt" Kaufman with additional songs by Manami Matsumae!
  • Master an array of magical Relic subweapons.
  • Amass riches to upgrade your armor and weapons.
  • Detailed, living background and animation! Big, beautiful pixels!
  • Crazy bosses and lovable characters.
  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.
  • A light touch to narrative with humor, levity, and heart.
  • Overworld Map allows your quest unfold in a unique order!
  • Retell the adventure and uncover all of the world's secrets with New Game+!

Should you play this?
Yes/No

A quick summary: The game is fun, easy to pick up and feels rewarding to (kind of) master. I'm pretty ♥♥♥ at it but I enjoyed playing through

Pros:
+Great music
+Easy to pick up
+Really likeable characters, imo
+Fluid controls
+Despite being a pixel game, the colour choices used by the developer make the game pretty (a lot of devs don't seem to realize that color choice matters..)
+Boss Fights are unique and fun
+Lots of hidden stuff to find!
+Lots of direct and indirect references to older games
+There's a story that doesn't really take away from the game or try too hard to be something more than what the game is.
+I read there might be more content? Multiplayer possibly? Not sure if this is for sure.
+It's ♥♥♥♥ing Shovel Knight. A knight with a shovel. Farmer Knight.

Cons:
-CO-OP IS WII U ONLY AS OF JULY 1ST, 2016. Keep this in mind!
-The game has random difficulty spikes that come out of no where and often times feel frustrating because it seems out of place (Flying machine, eat my ♥♥♥).
-The relics (alternate weapons) aren't really that balanced. A lot of them are pretty useless with certain ones being a lot better than the rest. Think of the Metal-Saw-Blade...-thing from Megaman 2.
- It doesn't massage my back while I play.

Shovel Knight is, at its core, a platformer directly influenced by the NES era and its great games like the Megaman series, Castlevania and the Super Mario Brothers series. It has the fun platforming, the great music and of course like most games of this genre, its fair bit of difficult sections that have you on the verge of throwing the controller.

It's pretty easy to recommend this game if you're a fan of the NES era but what if you're not? Should you still play this game? I honestly think so. The game has a great sound track, it's very easy to pick up and play in the same way that Super Mario Bros and Megaman are since you literally just jump and attack, and despite there being some harder areas, the check point system and the fact that there isn't a limited number of lives makes the game feel a lot more fair than games from the NES era feel if you go back and play them now. This game also has a free DLC patch that adds an entirely new campaign with a new character for free, so I mean.. yeah, you get free stuff with your game that adds replay-ability (is that even a word) to it and it has a new game+ as well.

The only way I couldn't recommend it is if you don't enjoy platformers, you don't enjoy games that can be challenging at times or if you're just sick of the whole retro-styled game explosion on Steam where everybody and their mothers are mainly releasing retro-looking games, and even then, this game has a lot more going on beyond being another retro-styled platformer.

I tried to stick with it as best I could, but the levels seem to be designed in a purposefully annoying way. If you enjoy these tough 'retro' games you will probably love it. For me the frustration outweighed the fun.

I know i never write actual reviews on games that are fun, but this...
this is a master piece.
A very challenging game, accompanied with astonishing art and music,
with the combination of the story itself, makes this my ALL TIME favorite game i have ever played.
I have only finished Shovel Knight's story, but it made me cry, even if i am a tough man. :^)
I'll edit the review as i go, but the story, was truly, the best thing i have ever seen, the music, really well made and
fitting with the story, and the art style is amazing.

99/100 - I broke a pencil

P.S. Just kidding, 101/100.

Worth its full price in every. single. way.

This is my favorite game since megaman X. I wish there was more good platformers out there like this!!

My only dissapointment with this game is the fact that you can only play multiplayer on nintendo devices... that should kinda be accessible to everyone in my opinion.

Other than that, this game had great level design, a simple engaging story that didnt get in the way of the gameplay, and funny little jokes throughout the game. Go ahead and buy it right now!

I should start by saying if nobody wants to read this 1,000 page essay over here, I'll help summarize it into 3 words: buy this game. If you're still here, carry on.

I had heard of all the critical acclaim for this game, so this year I decided I'd pick it up on sale. After plenty of patient waiting, I conviniently noticed it 33% off on my birthday, when I recieved some steam cards. So, I bought it.

Holy ****, I wonder why I waited so long.

Graphics:

This game looks fantastic. While pixel art is nothing new to indie games, where Shovel Knight exceeds is it's faithfulness in replicating old NES graphics while simultaneously being goregeous. Only on subsequent playthroughs did I notice the moving cogs in the background of Tinker Knight's stage.

Sound:

The soundtrack by Jake Kaufman achives exactly what the graphics do; it shoots for authenticity with the game's retro feel while simultaneously providing one of the best indie game soundtracks that I've heard, right up there with Undertale.

Story:

Very simple, but it's effective, and yet again distinctively retro; it mimics the era when game stories lacked the ability to offer cutscenes that added up to be the length of actual movies, so instead gave you a compelling reason as to why you're playing this game. Also, the game's characters (particularly the bosses) give a good sense of personality through little dialouge, and the ending twist is pretty original.

Gameplay:

Now this is where the game truly shines. Let me first off say that the control is damn perfect; no cheap deaths here, it's always your fault. Shovel knight starts off with a basic swing and a pogo-style downward strike, but by collecting treasure he can upgrade his arsenal with new abilities, armor, items, and more. Now, I'm the kind of person that doesn't even use "mana abilities" in most games (stuff tied to magic meters and the like), but I found myself frequently using this game's relics; I found almost all of them to be extremely helpful in at least one case. The level design is also fantastic; the game's stages take familiar "world" tropes (the ice level, the fire level, etc.) and put new twists on them (said ice level features a platform capable of creating rainbow bridges, and the fire level features goo that turns the lava into bouncy slime). Each level is also chock-full of secret rooms which I find to be perfectly hidden: they're not "kill yourself in this particular pit" or "hit thos wall with no indication" invisible, but completionists will have to keep a good eye out for them. These rooms contain more platforming challenges and danger but reward the player with songs, purchasable relics, or more treasure, creating a nice risk/reward mechanic. And the bosses are memorable and fantastic.

Replay Value:

An initial run through this game shouldn't take too long (depending on what kind of player you are, should take you anywhere from 5-10 hours approximately), there are plenty of achievements to keep you busy, which range from finding those secrets to harder subsequent runs. I don't normally 100% games, but this game is so frickin' good (for all the reasons mentioned above) that I was more than happy to find a reason to keep on playing. (Note: the game also features a challenge mode with some custom platforming runs and boss rushes).

Cons:

Yes, I had a few flaws with this game. A few. The main one is that swapping relics can take you out of the action at times, but this is minor and easily overlooked. Also, Tinker Knight isn't a great boss... I think that's it?

BONUS:

Yacht Club games being the generous overlords they are have given us mortals a WHOLE NEW DLC CAMPAIGN FOR FREE. ****-KING FREEEEEEE. A campaign that adds a new character, with his own abilities, own upgrades, own relics, own story, own achievments, own challenges, level design changes where some areas wouldn't work out so well for him, and overall just a big overhaul of the game with it's own suprising and entertaining twists on the main game. Is it as good as the main game? Admittedly, no. But this could have easily been a $10 purchase, and I would have gladly loved it just as much. But it's free, and basically doubles the amount of value for this game. Someone needs to show these guys to devs like OVERKILL (Payday 2).

Conclusion:

Buy this game. You do not need a sense of nostalgia for the 8-bit era (as I can testify; I wasn't around back then). You do not need to be a fan of 2D platformers (even if you dislike them. this is one of the best ever; no understatementl, and the very very very least worth a try). The amount of detail, work, and passion that went into this game shows with gusto.

Excellent game.
Wonderful performance, rock solid 60 fps, rebindable controls, moderate difficulty.
Surprisingly cool and engaging story too.
Top notch gameplay and superb level designs.
Continuous support by devs, free DLCs and sizeable amount of content.
Catchy music on top of it.

I can't really come up with any real complaints. Oversaturated palette maybe?
