About This Game

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Features:

  • Shovel Knight’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.
  • The systems of today also give Shovel Knight modern touches: detailed animation, multilayered parallax backgrounds, and evolved game design.
  • Perfect your platforming skills as you take down each of the knights of the Order of No Quarter.
  • Flip enemies! Leap over gaps! Duel with foes! Dig up treasure! Find Secrets! Upgrade! Shovel Knight is simple to learn and play, but challenge lies everywhere.
  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake "Virt" Kaufman with additional songs by Manami Matsumae!
  • Master an array of magical Relic subweapons.
  • Amass riches to upgrade your armor and weapons.
  • Detailed, living background and animation! Big, beautiful pixels!
  • Crazy bosses and lovable characters.
  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.
  • A light touch to narrative with humor, levity, and heart.
  • Overworld Map allows your quest unfold in a unique order!
  • Retell the adventure and uncover all of the world's secrets with New Game+!

It's dangerous to go alone! Take this!

Nah but really, Shovel Knight is a really fun game with a really intersting and unique game mechanic, and it's only downfall is that it's a bit too easy at times, and is way too short.

Shovel Knight...
This game is difficult. I'm not the most experienced gamer you'll meet- in a scale from novice to expert I'd be in the middle, a "core gamer". But this game is legitamately hard. I've died so many times in this game and I haven't completed it yet... but it is still a great game. This is fair difficulty, even though I felt like crying once (boohoo). But you gotta use a controller, or at least don't use a membrane keyboard. I found myself accidently pressing the caps lock button which is always bad for any game, ESPECIALLY IN A BOSS BATTLE. I'll probably add to this review when I finish it, but if you like a challenge, buy this game (I got it in a summer sale).

This is one of my favorite games of all time. It really sweeps you back into the time you first put a game into your NES. The music is fantastic, the gameplay is hard but fair, the worldbuilding is amazing and the game comes with not one, but two campaigns each with their own story. $15 may seem steep, but it's worth it. You don't have an excuse, buy this game

It's great, but I have to use cheat codes just to beat the second level.

Still, great game with a great sound track and a ok story.

Rating: 5/5 (Magnificent)

Let me present you some numbers: Shovel Knight is supposed to be beaten in 8 hours. I'm going for 100, AND I DON'T PLAN STOPPING.

This game is, like, very good. Awesome. Perfect. I really can't describe it.
The second I started it, I was hit by the FEEL of this game. It's like you really started your NES or SNES once more. The first thing that popped in my head was "omg, Mega-Man X is back".

So let me put this straight: Shovel Knight is the absolute leader of the platform revival.
The platforming is supreme, 8-bits graphics are polished and well animated, soundtrack makes me puke rainbows. If you stop jumping and shoveling for some seconds, you'll start to notice the creator's love for this game irradiating for your screen like the heat of an old-school star.

You may think this game is overpriced, but ABSOLUTELY it's not.
I paid full price and don't regret a cent.
And that was before the expansion. Now Shovel Knight is 2 games in 1, by the same price AND MORE IS COMING.

So, please, buy this.
You'll get yourself two campaigns, nostalgia, killer soundtrack and devilish platforming all in one packaging.

I just can't stress this enough: if you remotely like platforming, BUY THIS.

This game makes you feel like you're in the 90s, it sucks you into that world, and your train of thought start going all retro. Typical from Mario is to check if pipes are actually usable, here it's the walls you break. Some of them have marks on them, some do not. Anyways, to the point.

I started the game for the first time the other day, and I fell in love instantly; the graphics, the sounds, the attack of Shovel Knight, the enemies and jumps, everything was perfectly connected and pleasant, I thought "Man, this is one of those games that makes you want to play constantly!"

The fist 3 hours I had loads of fun, visiting villages, getting the roamers on the map, the random bosses, the hidden stuff, the upgrades. I simply loved it, and everytime I closed the game, I couldn't wait to boot it up again.

But then, the feeling-good gameplay stopped, and I found myself thinking "I really want to end this level, it's not enjoyable like the others, and hope the next one is less frustrating", alas, the next level never was more enjoyable, at contrary, it was harder and less fun to play.

Also want to mention that one thing that I don't like about the game, is how they try their best to make every level different, that means that you won't play the same style of level again; for example, there's one level that consists of winds pushing you around, and you being smart and using it to your favor, that was fun, but that mechanic only lasted 20 mins, once the level was done, you won't see the same background/music/enemies again, and it happens with *every* level.

I loved the first levels of the game, but they never appeared again, and that made me sad, because they were far more pleasant.

Another game mechanic that I don't think is done right, is the "night". Basically, it makes all the screen black and you don't see neither the character, the enemies, nor where you put your foot, unless there's a thunderstorm (one each 5 or 6 seconds that lasts for 0,5s) or a hole in the background which lets light pass through. It was frustrating to constantly die due to an enemy hitting you without you noticing, and falling to the depths; losing coins for something you have no control over.

So, basically, after the first 3 hours, I started not feeling good playing the game, it was death after death after death, and it didn't make me feel good like the way Dark Souls saga does after accomplishing something, sometimes I thought it was pure luck that I was still alive.

Game is short, some mechanics will make you pull your hair out, and you never get to enjoy the levels/mechanics/enemies that you love again. However, the gameplay is extremely fun, using the shovel is so entertaining and original/creative, that you just can't wait to see a pile to dig, or a normal enemy to use it, the sound is spectacular, and the graphics are pleasant to your eyes, it's one of those games that you want to watch at everything in the screen to notice the great details in it.

Up until hour 3; 8/10, after hour 3; 5/10.

I don't normally like plataform games; I hated Super Meat Boy, couldn't play side-scroller Sonic games, loved Ghost n' Goblins, and loved Cave Story. If you have more or less the same taste as I do, you might have the same opinion on this game.

This game is a perfect example of why I do not like the recent glut of procedurally-generated games.

The level crafting is so tight, and each level is designed with care. Real work and skill went into making this game, and it shows. There is little that can compare to the rush the game gives me when I finally beat a level without dying, getting past surprisingly intelligent enemies and deviously-placed traps and beating the boss.

That doesn't even mention the tight controls, the fantastic chiptune music, the graphics that so effortlessly mimic classic NES games while using modern tricks and pallets. This is just a fantastic game.

Great retro style game, impressed that there are two complete play throughs with separate story lines. Music is cool, platforming is good and is a well put together game. However reminded that I now no longer have the patience for platforming games, especially with knock back mechanics which I hate and this game is programmed perfectly for enemies to one shot kill you constantly!

A true homage to the retro community with every aspect, from music to the gameplay, handled in the top-notch sense. There are some lessons to be learned from these guys. And what's more, free downloadable contents is the cherry on the pie.

I don't even know how to start, but here we go:

This is one of the best games I ever played so far in the genre.
Sadly I wasn't aware of the Kickstarter campaing back then, otherwise I'd have help this great game's development.
With that said...

Shovel Knight is the closest thing you (25+ yos) can play and feel the nostalgia all over the game: Pixelated and colorful graphics, AWESOME soundtrack, simple yet fun and intuitive controls, sub-weapons, fair difficulty...
But the game doesn't rely solely on nostalgia. The characters have their own personalities, dialogues are funny/puns galore, game can be challenging if you go after achievements and collectives/personal challenges/speed runs.
More than a generic platformer, Shovel Knight mainly has a soul. An essence that it makes unique among others of the genre. And with upcoming (free by the way, thanks to the Kickstarter success) campaings starring the other knights from The Order of No Quarter, Shovel Knight has a amazing replayability.
What you waiting for? Sharpen thy shovel and start striking the earth, thou dig me?
