About This Game

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Features:

  • Shovel Knight’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.
  • The systems of today also give Shovel Knight modern touches: detailed animation, multilayered parallax backgrounds, and evolved game design.
  • Perfect your platforming skills as you take down each of the knights of the Order of No Quarter.
  • Flip enemies! Leap over gaps! Duel with foes! Dig up treasure! Find Secrets! Upgrade! Shovel Knight is simple to learn and play, but challenge lies everywhere.
  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake "Virt" Kaufman with additional songs by Manami Matsumae!
  • Master an array of magical Relic subweapons.
  • Amass riches to upgrade your armor and weapons.
  • Detailed, living background and animation! Big, beautiful pixels!
  • Crazy bosses and lovable characters.
  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.
  • A light touch to narrative with humor, levity, and heart.
  • Overworld Map allows your quest unfold in a unique order!
  • Retell the adventure and uncover all of the world's secrets with New Game+!

I often found myself purposefully getting hit by enemies, so I could then walk past them with my invicibility frames. Then in some of the later stages (the final castle stage or whatever they're called) I often raged at either the ♥♥♥♥ that came out of nowhere or falling through platforms for no apparant reason. I didn't like almost all the platforming in this platformer.

I was looking at other negative reviews for this game and most of them follow the same formula, oh this game is a masterpiece but just didn't click with me, somehow, PLEASE DON'T HATE ME INTERNET, I APOLIGIZE IMMEDIATELY FOR THIS TRANSGRESSION. I am here to tell you that this game is not a masterpiece, but is undeinably flawed with its level design.

If there is one good thing I can say about this game, and I mean great thing, it's the boss battles. All off the boss battles (expect for the grim reaper one, that one was kinda boring) are really fun. Every level I would just try to finish the platforming as soon as possible just to get to a new boss. I wish a game could be made with similar mechanics to Shovel Knight but with just boss battles.

Overall I thought the game was average, but I felt this required a negative review, sence all of the postive reviews glorify this game as a flawless masterpiece. If you really like NES platformers, this should be up your alley (might be alittle too easy for your tastes though, I found it easy and I also find NES games ball-crushingly hard). If not I wouldn't recomend it unless you don't have anything better to do, the game can kill 3-5 hours.

Also apparently there is more than one spell in this game, I wouldn't know that if I didn't look that up sence the only spell I optained in the game was the anchor one. I never even obtained any relics to give to the magic lady in the village. Maybe I'm just terrible at looking for secrets :(

honestly, i really dig this game. indie developers these days weren't quite grasping what they needed to do in order to create a good 8-bit game. so, as far as the 8-bit 2D platformer genre goes, this game is ground breaking. i highly recommend this game, and i'm gonna call it quits for this review, seeing as i'm really digging myself into a hole with these shovel puns. heh heh heh. ...

Ever played Commander Keen? Well, then this game is right up your alley. A true platformer with collectibles, hidden stuff and challenging levels. To top it off, you get to play a knight that wields a shovel. What more could you ask for?

If this came out at the same time as Megaman, we'd have had Shovel Knight X3 right now and Megaman would have been lost in time.

This game does 90's better than the 90's.

Shovel Knight is a must play game, not only for platformer lovers but for everyone. It offers about 20 hours of gameplay after free DLC (Plague of Shadows) and these 20 hours are spent only during campaign while the game offers more. For those who don't want to read the whole review, I'll try to catch it in few words. The game is really fun, amusing and replayable. Also it offers many challenges and unlocks, so if you are still wondering if you should buy it, JUST BUY IT!

For those carrying on, let's talk about GAMEPLAY
In Shovel Knight you can play campaign and after finishing it, a new game+ can be started (enemies hit harder, there are less check points and food platters will spawn a bomb instead of regenerating health). The game offers 2 playable characters : Shovel Knight and Plague Knight (obtained after finishing the game with Shovel Knight). It takes 8-12 hours, to complete the campaign with one of those characters, depending on how good player you are. Playing as Plague Knight feels like totally diffrent game (the whole gameplay mechanics is changed). All levels differ from each other. Once you' ll land between cold mountains and suddenly you'll be in a middle of volcano. Besides splendid campaign, developers added optional challenge mode which introduces player to another level of insanity. Freaking 26 levels created just to make your life harder, all of them completely irritating. You can play with controller or keyboard. Both options work flawlessly.

Now it's time for in-game STORY
I'm not going to lie about it. The story is just really simple, but the simplicity makes it even better. It's hard to not spoil the story talking about it, so I'll say that playing with diffrent characters makes the story diffrent. Whenever you meet someone and start a dialogue, you will be amused and surprised how funny the conversations are.

Eventually we came to a point where glorious PC gaming master race takes place. GRAPHICS
The graphics looks beaufitul, the colors are bright, there are many details. Every single detail is well-made and matches with the rest of the level. For those who want to play the game in 4K resolution, ultra settings etc. etc. etc. there will be small disappointment... IT'S ALL PIXELS and no matter what you do, no diffrence will be seen on any 4K monitor or any other. I mean the game will look lovely no matter what.

SOUNDTRACKS
I'm not a music lover so I'll just say that it's just great. Music varies from slow, atmospheric songs to faster and lively ones.

At the end comes REPLAY-VALUE
So not much to say..... YES THIS GAME IS SO SO SO REPLAYABLE. Every second spent in this game will be enjoyed by kids, teenagers and adults, no matter how many times they complete it. You will want to replay some maps just to get more collectibles, unlock some achievements or just to challenge yourself.

Summarising all upper things, there is only one thing to say : This game is perfect platformer for everyone. Developers made a 2D game with retro graphic and soundtrack and they made it well. Shovel Knight's got everyghint it has to have : good gameplay and good replayability. There is nothing more needed for a game to have and I would recommend this game to everyone.

Thanks for reading my review! It was fun to write it for you all. I hope it's helped at least few of you! :D

I did not expect this.
This game is incredibly good: gameplay is stellar, soundtrack is awesome, characters are funny and memorable AND devs are so awesome they're actually adding new campaigns for free! Yup these guys add entire DLCs without charging a dollar!
A 100% buy, definitely worth it's price.
Oh, have you spent your childhood playing 8-bit, 16-bit platformers? Then it's 200% buy for you!

[EDIT1: To address "game is too hard" reviews]
Come on guys, game gives you infinite lives, most stages have 4+ checkpoints, you have quite a few tools which help you tackle any situation (even invincibility on demand item). Old 8-bit games were way less forgiving than that and we still managed to beat them and enjoy them.

[EDIT2: Friendly advice on Plague of Shadows]
To my brethren alchemists: a good chemists takes his time to brew a perfect potion! Tweak your bombs and choose your skills in accordance to the situation at hand! And don't rush in like some blue headed fool with a garden tool!

I would just like to note that Shovel Knight is awesome, the free Plague Knight DLC is even more awesome, and more is on the way. The only reason you will likely never see me playing it on Steam or get any further achievements past the base game is...I liked it so much I went ahead and bought it a second time, for PS Vita.

A Brilliant Platforming game at its best in this one.
With a combination gameplay of Megaman 2+Castlevania+Duck tales with shovel added in it.
PROS:
+Executed Platforming with no flaws.
+Great gameplay mechanic that keep you "dig in".
+Great 8-Bit Soundtracks with catchy theme.
+Balance of each bosses with unique platform theme in every stages.

CONS:
-The main campaign can be beat around 5 hours

Over all: 9/10 You will have more enjoyment out of this game than MN.9

Should you play this?
Yes/No

A quick summary: The game is fun, easy to pick up and feels rewarding to (kind of) master. I'm pretty ♥♥♥ at it but I enjoyed playing through

Pros:
+Great music
+Easy to pick up
+Really likeable characters, imo
+Fluid controls
+Despite being a pixel game, the colour choices used by the developer make the game pretty (a lot of devs don't seem to realize that color choice matters..)
+Boss Fights are unique and fun
+Lots of hidden stuff to find!
+Lots of direct and indirect references to older games
+There's a story that doesn't really take away from the game or try too hard to be something more than what the game is.
+I read there might be more content? Multiplayer possibly? Not sure if this is for sure.
+It's ♥♥♥♥ing Shovel Knight. A knight with a shovel. Farmer Knight.

Cons:
-CO-OP IS WII U ONLY AS OF JULY 1ST, 2016. Keep this in mind!
-The game has random difficulty spikes that come out of no where and often times feel frustrating because it seems out of place (Flying machine, eat my ♥♥♥).
-The relics (alternate weapons) aren't really that balanced. A lot of them are pretty useless with certain ones being a lot better than the rest. Think of the Metal-Saw-Blade...-thing from Megaman 2.
- It doesn't massage my back while I play.

Shovel Knight is, at its core, a platformer directly influenced by the NES era and its great games like the Megaman series, Castlevania and the Super Mario Brothers series. It has the fun platforming, the great music and of course like most games of this genre, its fair bit of difficult sections that have you on the verge of throwing the controller.

It's pretty easy to recommend this game if you're a fan of the NES era but what if you're not? Should you still play this game? I honestly think so. The game has a great sound track, it's very easy to pick up and play in the same way that Super Mario Bros and Megaman are since you literally just jump and attack, and despite there being some harder areas, the check point system and the fact that there isn't a limited number of lives makes the game feel a lot more fair than games from the NES era feel if you go back and play them now. This game also has a free DLC patch that adds an entirely new campaign with a new character for free, so I mean.. yeah, you get free stuff with your game that adds replay-ability (is that even a word) to it and it has a new game+ as well.

The only way I couldn't recommend it is if you don't enjoy platformers, you don't enjoy games that can be challenging at times or if you're just sick of the whole retro-styled game explosion on Steam where everybody and their mothers are mainly releasing retro-looking games, and even then, this game has a lot more going on beyond being another retro-styled platformer.
