About This Game

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Features:

  • Shovel Knight’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.
  • The systems of today also give Shovel Knight modern touches: detailed animation, multilayered parallax backgrounds, and evolved game design.
  • Perfect your platforming skills as you take down each of the knights of the Order of No Quarter.
  • Flip enemies! Leap over gaps! Duel with foes! Dig up treasure! Find Secrets! Upgrade! Shovel Knight is simple to learn and play, but challenge lies everywhere.
  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake "Virt" Kaufman with additional songs by Manami Matsumae!
  • Master an array of magical Relic subweapons.
  • Amass riches to upgrade your armor and weapons.
  • Detailed, living background and animation! Big, beautiful pixels!
  • Crazy bosses and lovable characters.
  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.
  • A light touch to narrative with humor, levity, and heart.
  • Overworld Map allows your quest unfold in a unique order!
  • Retell the adventure and uncover all of the world's secrets with New Game+!

It's games like this that made me fall in love with videogames as a kid. If it wasn't for some small detail or other, one could truly believe Shovel Knight is one of the classics, as it certainly will be in the future. 10/10 would shovel again.

Smooth gameplay, great graphics, and a great soundtrack. Being a Megaman fan and had been pretty good at Ducktales as a kid, I clicked with this game easily. Also, this game will work on any computer, even a low budget potato computer you got from your mom because you said you wanted a computer. 10/10 Good platformer with great gameplay.

Shovel Knight lends itself to other classic 8-bit retro games while still remaining to be unique (which is some feat). This game has an amazing soundtrack, tricky platforming and challenging but fair boss fights.

There is a linear storyline that is reminscent of the games this was inspired from but it just simply fits well and taking all those aspects in to account I can only say this is something everyone should definitely try out (even those who didn't play the games this was inspired from like me).

I am really struggling to find any gripe I have with this game, perhaps it's a tad bit short and there is exclusive content for the Wii U from my understanding but in terms of the actual gameplay it's essentially flawless. This game is definitely my favourite retro indie game by a fair bit.

Overall 9/10 - Steel thy Shovel!

The inspiration from Mario and Megaman is pretty blatant for all to see however, that doesn't tarnish Shovel Knight as a game, in fact it compliments it and is truly an Indie triumph. Personally, the music for me got a little repetitive and I often turned it down as a result but in terms of gameplay, Shovel Knight is a great platformer that borrows elements from big names in the genre but also more importantly defines itself as an individual.

The controls are pretty basic but this is a classic example of less is more as the experience was still fresh to me throughout the game, despite the fact that you can only jump, attack, down attack and use your items.

But seriously, this game is pretty good.
Some levels are slow and New Game + wasn't that good for me, but this is well worth the 12 hour adventure.
Wait a minute.
Star Wars Battlefront 2015 costs 60$ and that lasts 4 hours
When Shovel Knight is 15$ and lasts more then twice of that

While I suspected retro indies were ♥♥♥♥♥, this has proven the opposite to me. I have never had such a joy in platformers ever since I played Mario Bros Deluxe on Gameboy color.

The game looks cool, it got very simple but perfect controls and a remarkable soundtrack.
It also got the classic difficulty of old platformers, which sometimes does feel a bit exaggerated (dying tens of times by touching spikes and falling in holes), but this could also be because I got used to the infinite checkpoints in modern style games.

If you doubt whether you will like this or not, just think of how it was to play the classic Mario Bros.

The game is obviously brilliant. It looks wonderful. The sprites are lively, incredibly animated while not overdoing it. The soundtrack is the best kind of chiptunes you could dream of. The controls are pretty tight: the jumps feel right.

Sadly, I think the game is let down early enough by its level design, and the odd choice of keeping one of the main aspect from the bad platformers of the days of yore: the directional 'pushback on hit' mechanics combined with instadeath pits. It makes enemies uninteresting, and turns them from being a threat to being an annoyance that might, sometimes, precipitate your death to the offscreen void.

The game seems aware of that issue, since it is somewhat generous with its checkpoint system and temporary invulnerability skills a go-go - the main departures from the games Shovel Knight wants to pay tribute to. But this is just a rough patching work to the underlying issue. The game also reserves you some more one-hit kill surprises I won't spoil for you.
Ironically, compared to the dreaded pits and spikes, the boss fights felt like relaxing distractions.

The game also tends to focus on the grabbing of monies, gems, whatever... borrowing in that respect from Western 16bit platforming (think of all those German Amiga ones, with ♥♥♥♥ to grab everywhere). But then, the economic model your looting is supposed to support is so weak it makes little sense. Since there is no high score, there is basically no incentive past the halfway point, besides Pokemoniac Compulsive Behaviour, to grab anything.

I guess I am too cranky an old ♥♥♥♥ to be any patient with this kind of gaming experience anymore. Navigating the tedious and somewhat boring levels to get to the enjoyable little distraction of a boss fight and experience the pixel poetry of the inter cutscenes wasn't enough to keep me from grumbling.

Simple, retro-styled gameplay coupled with tight, responsive controls and a stellar soundtrack all come together to make Shovel Knight an instant indie hit. Shovel Knight is the tale of a knight with an unconventional weapon out to take down the Enchantress and rescue his beloved. Giving nods to old 8-bit titles such as Mega-Man, Super Mario, and Castlevania, Shovel Knight shows us that retro still holds up even now. Borrowing all of the best bits and pieces of each of those titles and making them it’s own, Shovel Knight perfects each aspect and delivers a thrilling game experience.

PRO
-----------------
*Simple, tight controls
*Detailed 8-bit environments and animations
*Retro gameplay and mechanics
*Lots of sub-weapons to mix up your arsenal
*Collectibles
*Mini-games
*Challenging boss battles
*Amazing soundtrack
*Effective upgrade system for health and magic
*Tons of secrets to find
*New Game +

CON
-----------------
*Bad? There isn’t anything bad about Shovel Knight!
*Ok fine, If you have to have a con, it’s that the game isn’t nearly long enough for how awesome it is. If it were a 200 hour adventure, it MIGHT be long enough.

Shovel Knight's greatest feat is disguising itself as "old school" when it's design philosophy couldn't be any further from it. This title is a game every fan of retro classics of the NES era should own, and it’s available on a variety of platforms, including Steam and the Nintendo 3DS.

After spending some time with the game, wich ive felt has been as much as a lifetime, Shovel Knight is the hybrid between The Legend of Zeldas exploration and Mega mans Level design creating a world like never seen before,
the game is made as if it was a Snes title, what isn't cool about that.

Each level is designed and theemed arround each boss that reside there, the game rewards the adventurous to explore the area with even more treasures than you would normaly find and sometimes consist Relics, artifacts with secret powers harnested from mana, obtained from containers found in each level or by fallen minnions.

All minnions you encounter is well diverse, meaning dispite their similar appearance from one to an other they always have a trick up their sleeves, this doesn't mean they're not readable, once you figure out what they can do it wont take long until you know what they can't counter against

The story is well writen and encurage you to continue the journey to the bitter end, atleast it gave me that feeling, can't be sure if anyone else feel the same.

Shovel Knigt providesa great challenge from each playtrough you choose to do achive, offering well diverse feats ready to be completed by anyone willing to complete them, and if new game+ wasn't as mutch of an intrest, you can always play the story as one of the other knigts, including their own set of abilities and playstyle along with a different story than the Blue Burrower has.
________________________________________________________________
If you don't feel like reading trought most of this here's a simplified list:
+Well written story.
+Great level design.
+Diverse enemies.
+Multiple playtroughs.
-Not much to hate about the game.
________________________________________________________________
This game simply proves that classics from the Snes era still stand strong after their time has passed, I greatly recommend this title for players who haven't seen any interesting platformers or if you want to jump back to when gaming shined the very brightest.
11/10
Would smite thy foe with shovel, again!
