About This Game

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Features:

  • Shovel Knight’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.
  • The systems of today also give Shovel Knight modern touches: detailed animation, multilayered parallax backgrounds, and evolved game design.
  • Perfect your platforming skills as you take down each of the knights of the Order of No Quarter.
  • Flip enemies! Leap over gaps! Duel with foes! Dig up treasure! Find Secrets! Upgrade! Shovel Knight is simple to learn and play, but challenge lies everywhere.
  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake "Virt" Kaufman with additional songs by Manami Matsumae!
  • Master an array of magical Relic subweapons.
  • Amass riches to upgrade your armor and weapons.
  • Detailed, living background and animation! Big, beautiful pixels!
  • Crazy bosses and lovable characters.
  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.
  • A light touch to narrative with humor, levity, and heart.
  • Overworld Map allows your quest unfold in a unique order!

So, got this game a day ago, and I did not play a single other game until I beat it. Instead of gushing all over the floor, I made a list of pros and cons of this game.

Pros-

Smooth gameplay
Tight controls
Changable controls
Satisfying kills
♥♥♥♥ING AWESOME SOUNDTRACK
Imitates the 8 Bit era EXTREMELY WELL. This game does it right, and passes through the barrier that indie retro games are stale
Intro that shows off the 8 Bit era PERFECTLY
First level is great, shows off things you can do, not hard, first boss fight is good
World map similar to the Super Mario Bros 3
You can bounce on enemies like in Duck Tales
Has a style similar to Megaman
Hub world where you can buy upgrades and do sidequests
RELICS: Pretty much every regular level has a relic. These relics are a nice way to change up the way you kill your enemies. You can find these in secret areas where you find a chest, containing... a person.... inside. He will allow you to buy the stages relic. However, if you miss him, or do not have enough money to buy the relic, he can be found in the huv world, but the relic is a bit more expensive.
Mana and health system, Buy or find meal tickets after certain levels and take them to a
Gastronomer in the hub world to expand your life meter, easy right? You can buy mana upgrades with gold at the Magician near the Gastronomer. Forgot to mention that relics take mana to use.
Mini levels, these include battles with wandering travelers (Mario 3) Mini relic levels which take certain relics and bases the level off them.
Great level design
Blame nothing on the game. If you die its your fault.
A good challenge
Great Humor
If you get bored, you can use Cheat Codes to make a new file which distracts you from your main one. There are tons of cheat codes, over 200 of them, look them up.
Awesome foreshadowing in the form of dream levels.
All of the 41 stubborn people who negatively reviewed the game only complain about how hard the game is. Its not the hardest game ever. In fact its pretty easy compared to other games that I have played.
Great final battle, will not spoil it.
Great boss battles
More ♥♥♥♥
Way more ♥♥♥♥
There are alot more cool things about this game. I cannot fit them all here. Just ♥♥♥♥ing play it

Cons? I guess?
If you suck at video games this may give you a stroke.
Short, I guess
??? I could have sworn I had at least one more con about this game.

This game is really good. Like really really good. Play it

This game is like the culmination of ALL the classic, best NES games you had in your library during the late 80's to mid 90's. It got the art style down perfectly (though the color range is not as limited as the NES, thank the gods), the music is authentic and absolutely amazing, and the controls are tight and satisfying as all hell. It's a perfect platformer, action game that also makes any 90's Kid nostalgic deep inside.

But here's the ingenious, oh so beautiful thing about the game: It never needed the nostalgia novelty, the NES 8-bit grahpics, the chiptunes, or even the limited NES controls, to actually be so amazing. It's a damn fantastic game, long enough to not overstay its welcome, and every level is designed perfectly for forcing you to master said controls, and new elements.

So it may be a tired notion of Indie games using pixel art to pitch itself, but this is a case where the developers had a great game as a foundation, and then made it look and sound like a great NES game... not the other way around. Substance over style here, and damn is the style awesome!

It is the combination of Super Mario Bros 3, Mega Man, Castlevania, and a slice of Metroid with an amazing soundtrack and art to back that up. Go buy this game as soon as you can, you will not regret it.

Shovel Knight. Where to begin?
Well, first off, it's a platformer. But when you mix platformer AND RPG with story? That's hard to do. But Yacht Club Games created an amazing game with all those elements. You can gather collectibles, buy upgrades, discover secrets, talk to the villagers, and watch a Giant half apple half fish dance for you. Shovel Knight is probably one of my favorite games of all time. If you enjoy fun, clever, and old-school games, you have to get shovel knight.

I would like to start by getting this out of the way: Shovel Knight is easily one of my favorite games of 2014. If you're a fan of platformers at all, or you've tried to go back and play classics and been put off by their difficulty, Shovel Knight is a perfect game to start with. While it looks retro, it does an incredible job of melding modern game design with familiar highly refined mechanics and controls to create one of the best games I've played this year.

The story is about 6 or so hours long and full of optional bosses, secrets in each level, and loads of entertaining achievements to try for that give you an extra level of challenge if that's what you're looking for. There is a ton of replayability here, especially considering there is a new game + available as soon as you beat the game the first time that makes the game significantly harder. Also, let's not forget the music - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysCxbfg1VvY . I've finished the game multiple times between 3ds and PC and would be more than happy to ditch any of this holiday seasons major releases in favor of going back to Shovel Knight a few more times.

Highly recommended.

Amazing Game, bought it yesterday. already got 6 hours and I don't even think I got that far! it's a retro old school style game, I'll call it a mix between Zelda 2/Megaman and Castlevania, and yeah, the music is awesome as well! 10/10!

I was saving up some money till the holiday sales, and I really wanted Shovel Knight, but then the cash appeared and I could buy it at Full Price, at first I thought I was hasty and wasted cash, but after playing it, I can safely say that this is my favourite game of 2014. Not only did it fulfill what I expected, it actually exceeded my expectations, it's challenging, you'll rely a lot on skill, the level design is so amazing I haven't been this frustrated ever since I played megaman again 3 years ago. It is a delicious mix of Castlevania, Megaman and Ninja Gaiden. The Retro graphics are enjoyable and the pixel art is amazing, its pretty hard to sprite in that style without making it look out of place due to the lack of limitations.
Yatch Club Games really nailed it with this game. If they ever announce a Sequel, I would gladly play it if its as enjoyable as this game was. Sincerely, best Ten Bucks I ever spent. Worth a lot more than AAA games I bought this year.

tl;dr 10/10 megaman knight ninja belmont play it would pay twice the actual price

At first glance, this game just appears to be another indie platformer that is retro themed.

At second glance, you look at it as "Maybe this one will be different."

At third glance, you're having the time of your life just pummeling away at enemies with a shovel.

This game controls very tightly with simplistic (yet complex to carry out in some circumstances) controls. One thing that I always bore in mind, was how awesome the difficulty curve was. From the very first level, you are getting tossed at monsters that are difficult to beat (but not impossible) and techniques that you'll be using for the rest of the game. The healthy difficulty curve really contribute to this game's replayability, too. I can see myself in the future doing another run of this game for some good old fashioned fun.

On a personal note, this is one of the few games that can make you feel emotions. Any time during the Shield Knight dream sequences, the music and overall theme did an excellent job at making you specifically go for Shield Knight. I missed her once on the third dream sequence and almost cried. Not to mention at the end of the game I felt tears welling up in my eyes when she was going to sacrifice herself to save you, then audibly cheered when it turned out she was alive.

I haven't gotten that excited about a video game since I was eight years old when I first beat Ocarina of Time. No game has been able to capture that old fashioned sense of achievement since then for me. To me, that rates this game as one of my all-time favorites.

I know my review will become blotted out by "Bounced a shovel off of a bubble 10/10" But, this game is a solid 10/10 in my book. Excellent music, tight controls, good (but not obtrusive) storyline, and awesome gameplay. It's a must-play.

One of the very few indie games that uses nostalgia as it was meant to be used, rather than as a crutch. Excellent soundtrack, as well!

That one 8-bit style kickstarter game that ended up being better than ♥♥♥♥ing Metroid Fusion. Hell it's even better than my nostalgic memories of Metroid Fusion. What can I say, it delivers in spades.
