About This Game

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Features:

  • Shovel Knight’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.
  • The systems of today also give Shovel Knight modern touches: detailed animation, multilayered parallax backgrounds, and evolved game design.
  • Perfect your platforming skills as you take down each of the knights of the Order of No Quarter.
  • Flip enemies! Leap over gaps! Duel with foes! Dig up treasure! Find Secrets! Upgrade! Shovel Knight is simple to learn and play, but challenge lies everywhere.
  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake "Virt" Kaufman with additional songs by Manami Matsumae!
  • Master an array of magical Relic subweapons.
  • Amass riches to upgrade your armor and weapons.
  • Detailed, living background and animation! Big, beautiful pixels!
  • Crazy bosses and lovable characters.
  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.
  • A light touch to narrative with humor, levity, and heart.
  • Overworld Map allows your quest unfold in a unique order!
  • Retell the adventure and uncover all of the world's secrets with New Game+!

Simple, retro-styled gameplay coupled with tight, responsive controls and a stellar soundtrack all come together to make Shovel Knight an instant indie hit. Shovel Knight is the tale of a knight with an unconventional weapon out to take down the Enchantress and rescue his beloved. Giving nods to old 8-bit titles such as Mega-Man, Super Mario, and Castlevania, Shovel Knight shows us that retro still holds up even now. Borrowing all of the best bits and pieces of each of those titles and making them it’s own, Shovel Knight perfects each aspect and delivers a thrilling game experience.

PRO
-----------------
*Simple, tight controls
*Detailed 8-bit environments and animations
*Retro gameplay and mechanics
*Lots of sub-weapons to mix up your arsenal
*Collectibles
*Mini-games
*Challenging boss battles
*Amazing soundtrack
*Effective upgrade system for health and magic
*Tons of secrets to find
*New Game +

CON
-----------------
*Bad? There isn’t anything bad about Shovel Knight!
*Ok fine, If you have to have a con, it’s that the game isn’t nearly long enough for how awesome it is. If it were a 200 hour adventure, it MIGHT be long enough.

Shovel Knight's greatest feat is disguising itself as "old school" when it's design philosophy couldn't be any further from it. This title is a game every fan of retro classics of the NES era should own, and it’s available on a variety of platforms, including Steam and the Nintendo 3DS.

At $14.99, I wasn't ready to purchase Shovel Knight. After all, there are AAA titles from well known companies that go for less. I've played through more NES classics than I can remember. Bubble Bobble, Castlevania, Contra (sans the Konami Code, you scrubs :-P), Mega Man 1-6, Metal Storm, Super C, and The Legend of Zelda are a few that come to my mind while trying to make a quick list of some titles I've completed. I wish I could tell you that I beat Battletoads, but I'd be lying. The prospect of reliving the genre with a new game sounded too good to be true. I've played newer "retro" games, but even when good, they are rarely able to resurrect the experience the older titles.

When I heard about the release of Plague of Shadows, it wasn't enough for me to buy this game. I thought, "Playable boss character? So they probably replaced the main character's sprite and gave him a projectile." So I kept waiting to catch sale. I finally purchased it at $10.04, and it still took me months to get around to playing the game. After 30 seconds into the first stage I felt like an idiot for sleeping on this title for so long. If Shovel Knight had existed during the NES era, it would be the type of cartridge people would be happy to pay $75.00+ for today.

It manages to completely capture the essence of the genre without feeling derivative. The developers have somehow managed to create a product that draws from the good parts of the 8-bit era while ditching unecessary artifacts. The colors, sounds, and animations are candy to the eyes and ears. I knew I was in for a treat mere moments after jumping into the first stage. I was even more impressed upon making it to the first town and interacting with the people there.

It took me roughly 9 hours to complete Shovel Knight's adventure for the first time, a feat which apparently can be accomplished in less than 45 minutes by highly skilled speed runners. The game encourages you to play through again with New Game+ (higher difficulty) and as Plague Knight. There is also a challenge mode and many Feats (achievements) for you to attempt. I'm currently two stages into my Plague Knight file and don't think I could be more amazed by this game. Rather than opting to lazily reskin Shovel Knight, Yacht Club Games gave Plague Knight his own storyline and unique playstyle.

As if Shovel Knight didn't have enough replayability, the developers are planning to release additional playable boss characters. It is difficult for me to imagine them topping the existing content, but I should probably have a little faith after already underestimating them so grossly. Is this game worth $14.99? Absolutely. Buy Shovel Knight now. If you are a fan of platformers or seeking NES nostalgia, you will dig it.

This is the first game that made me feel "i didn't give this guys enough money".
The music, the characters, the gameplay, everything in this game is so perfectly lined up in such a way, that it doesn't matter if you have or have not played games from the 90s when you were younger, you will enjoy every last second of it.
When i'm trying to come up with something that i don't like about this game, is that there isn't anything new for me to try. But even that doesn't count because the developers are giving us free updates of the game, bringing new playable characters, and new game modes.
Yacht Club Games made a perfect job with this game, and they still do, i never knew any developers so responsive with the community, and with such a love with their game.
Buy this game at full price, it deserves it and much more.
Now if you'll excuse me, i got shovel knight copies to buy, even the console ones... Without having a console.

So i bought it, Then when i saw the cutscene, i was like "Ok, Nice cutscene"
Then i saw the first level and heard the music, That's when i realized i was in for one hell of an adventure.

This game. This game is good. Here's why.

1.) This game is in 8-bit.
Most kids/adults who play this game get a very reminicent feeling of playing on every 8-bit gaming platform. That's sorta the build of this game, trying to be like none of the other indie games out there, but yet not going out of the way to be different. It does something simplistic, bringing you back to the 80s, 90s, and 2000s with 8-bit video games.
2.) The soundtrack.
Really should be under the 8-bit criteria, but still good none the less. This game's soundtrack was cleverly designed to bringing back some nostalgia with classic SNES and NES music from popular videogames. And what more could be said? It's ♥♥♥♥ing catchy! You could dance to this (Plague Knight).
3.) The DLC.
Adding one of the villans to the very exclusive playable character list is actually a smart idea. And with his entirely new gameplay, caused my 45 deaths with shovel knight to shoot up to 145 deaths. (I suck, he's hard.) The only mistake in the DLC is Vat (the item) comes mid-game and is really the most used utility that you'll get. Most of the items I had I never really used. (Stoneskin potion, Running feet elixer, big boom) They cluttered up my quick select menu, causing me to die because I didn't want to pause the game.
4.) Plot line
Plot: You're a serulian knight with a kick-♥♥♥ shovel on a quest to defeat the enchantress and find out what happened to shield knight. You fight other knights. Simple as that. Nothing more, nothing less. It's fine like that. Last thing I need is to be playing Kirby: The Amazing Mirror and have a backstory about Kirby's dark past fighting depression with binge eating.
Verdict:
Aw ye.
