About This Game

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Features:

  • Shovel Knight’s beautifully authentic style bridges the gap between yesterday and today. Design, art, and audio hearken back to the days of 8-bit.
  • The systems of today also give Shovel Knight modern touches: detailed animation, multilayered parallax backgrounds, and evolved game design.
  • Perfect your platforming skills as you take down each of the knights of the Order of No Quarter.
  • Flip enemies! Leap over gaps! Duel with foes! Dig up treasure! Find Secrets! Upgrade! Shovel Knight is simple to learn and play, but challenge lies everywhere.
  • Awesome soundtrack by Jake "Virt" Kaufman with additional songs by Manami Matsumae!
  • Master an array of magical Relic subweapons.
  • Amass riches to upgrade your armor and weapons.
  • Detailed, living background and animation! Big, beautiful pixels!
  • Crazy bosses and lovable characters.
  • Balanced gameplay is a warm welcome to newcomers, and an old embrace for experts.
  • A light touch to narrative with humor, levity, and heart.
  • Overworld Map allows your quest unfold in a unique order!
  • Retell the adventure and uncover all of the world's secrets with New Game+!

Taking the best parts from DuckTales, Zelda II, Castlevania, and the Mario series, Shovel Knight is a delightful and colorful action-platformer by the newly-Kickstarted Yacht Club Games. If you had to condense your memories and nostalgia of staring glass-eyed over your NES into a single story, you'd probably come up with something like Shovel Knight.

The titular Shovel Knight must traverse the land, fighting the villainous knights of the Order of No Quarter to save his beloved Shield Knight. Each level takes it's own Mega Man-esque theme and runs with it, from romantic flying airships to an explosion-prone potion laboratory. Gameplay is extremely tight, graphics and sound make the most of 8-bit aesthetics, and a New Game Plus allows Shovel Knight to bear some much-needed difficulty fangs in the spirit of brutal, Konami-esque difficulty.

However, my recommendation for this game comes from it's free DLC, Plague of Shadows. It manages to spin the game's story from a boss's perspective, from heroic gallantry to a touching story of loving others and yourself. It's one of the most genuinely sweet love stories in all of gaming. The updated gameplay mechanics are a delight as well.

This game is throwback a la Jeet Kun Do - taking all the useful and best parts, discarding the frustrating and archaic, leaving an airtight, short-but-dense romp for maximum fun. For those seeking fun, plain and simple, Shovel Knight delivers.

Hard but Fair seems to be a theme here in the reviews but I will back that up.
What isn't being mentioned often enough, or praised often enough is the literally pinpoint precise controls, and incredibly tounge in cheek humor on display in this game. Add in a sincere love of old school NES titles apprent in back grounds, enemies and obstacles and you have a charming, fun, addictive game, which is insanely difficult at times, but always fair in how you died.

Okay, now I haven't beat the Plague Knight expansion yet, I'm playing my second full playthrough of the main story and perhaps New Game+ as well. My review is based on that.

This game is incredible! The soundtrack is amazing, the gameplay is fun, the bosses are different and provide ome sort of challenge. If I had to list one drawback at all, I'd say the level design is full of little traps and enemies that can insta-kill you easily. I found myself rage quitting a few times because of all the enemy knockback that send you into a pit multiple times. Other than that the entire game is such a treat to play.

I definitely recommend this game for retro platform lovers!

Shovel Knight is a delightful reminder even today that the Indie Industry is still pumping out great quality games. Shovel Knight demonstartes this through wonderful controls that feel nice and are very responsive, great platforming that never feels cheap and you know you can do better, it also has an amazing score and the nostalgic graphics aren't bad but they aren't 3d models obviuosly. Shovel Knight is a must have for anyone who loves platformers.

i suck at this kind of game and at times it is frustrating as heck. that being said the levels are not only visually appealing but creative and have some very interesting gameplay
The characters and the world itself are established in a way that just lets the love which went into this game shine through.
Especially the end credit scenes (before end credit? pre end credit?) are one of the most charming ones I have ever seen
i'm just really loving it. will definitely replay.

This game is by far one of the funnest (deal with it funnest is now a word so sayeth me) games i have played in a long time. with the cartoonish music and level design to match, it creates a great retroish atmmosphere while still having interesting and engaging set of tools and hidden elements everywhere. The 'death' system is tough but fair, with the ability to regain lost items upon revival, but if you died in a really dumb spot, they won't be available. overall, an absolutely ridiculous game that is well worth whatever you pay for it.

Its been a long time since I've faced a platformer game, then decided to buy Shovel Knight. What can I say is, it was an amazing experience I was not expecting to have! It have those challenges that you feel good about yourself when you beat it, a feel that I usually have in The Legend of Zelda games. The boss fights are amazing, gives me that feels that I should prove that I'm worthy to continue. It took me 2 days to finish the game and it was awesome. The ending its perfect! I mean, a stage where you should use everything you have learned its what many gamers want, the same does with the bosses. The PLAYER is stronger, faster and better. Then you have the ultimate challenge. Its a game I finished with the feeling of a well done job. I made it. And it was amazing. I totally recommend for anyone who likes challenges. And if you think its still too easy, try New Game + and, like me, prove your worth!

This is such a great game! A MUST-PLAY for every gamer who likes platformers as they were on the NES or SNES.

- Really cool gameplay. With your shovel you can only do melee combat, which is really interesting and challenging. Also you will find equipment to use for long-range combat, which is even more interesting! What I really appreciate is that the enemies intended to do melee combat don't run dumbly into you as in some other platformers. No, they keep their distance and fight properly. You can upgrade your equipment, talk with citizens, discover many secrets and do much more funny stuff.
- The difficulty is challenging but still intermediate. This game is easier than Volgarr the Viking or Mega Man but harder than Mario bros or any casual game.
- At each levels end is a unique boss who is fun to compete against and each of them has even their own personality!
- In between the levels is much content to do a welcome change to the main levels.
- Awesome music! Reminds me of Mega Man and a bit Castlevania, but all its own Shovel Knight style!
- It has a touching story with a plot twist
- Very high replayability! You can not only do a harder new game+ and compete in difficult challenges but also play as Plague Knight - one of the villains - with interesting whole new movement, items, upgrades, secrets and even new story. It holds more than double the content of the main story!

Altogether it's a unique gem of platformer gaming. You could say it's a mix of Mega Man (Level Design, Bosses, Music), Zelda II - The Adventure of Link (Village Design, Upgrade System, Combat) and Mario 3 (Map Design, Platform Movement).

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This game is terrifically fun. For someone growing up playing platformers, this is a retro gamer's dream come true. Great development, challenging, great soundtrack, memorable characters, and simple controls. Shovel Knight does all the right things all the right ways.

Also, the developers are adding more ways to play the game at no extra cost to the purchaser. So when you finish all there is to do, the developer could drop an update that allows you to play the whole game as another character and you receive all that no strings attached.

Solid purchase. Would make a great gift to anyone new or old to gaming.

10/10

Such a well crafted game!

The main thing that kept me engaged is that Shovel Knight rarely repeats its challenges. Every level has its own enemies and mechanics with simple patterns that later create unique obstacles for the player. There are a few checkpoints on the way to the level's boss and I really appreciated that; Shovel Knight can be quite hard, but fair. Most of my deaths were a result of impatience and I was able to learn from them, I never got stuck for too long. The magic abilities were also a big help.
Overall it's a really refreshing platformer with beatiful art style and music. It's clear that a lot of love went into making Shovel Knight and as a player I greatly appreciate it.

After spending some time with the game, wich ive felt has been as much as a lifetime, Shovel Knight is the hybrid between The Legend of Zeldas exploration and Mega mans Level design creating a world like never seen before,
the game is made as if it was a Snes title, what isn't cool about that.

Each level is designed and theemed arround each boss that reside there, the game rewards the adventurous to explore the area with even more treasures than you would normaly find and sometimes consist Relics, artifacts with secret powers harnested from mana, obtained from containers found in each level or by fallen minnions.

All minnions you encounter is well diverse, meaning dispite their similar appearance from one to an other they always have a trick up their sleeves, this doesn't mean they're not readable, once you figure out what they can do it wont take long until you know what they can't counter against

The story is well writen and encurage you to continue the journey to the bitter end, atleast it gave me that feeling, can't be sure if anyone else feel the same.

Shovel Knigt providesa great challenge from each playtrough you choose to do achive, offering well diverse feats ready to be completed by anyone willing to complete them, and if new game+ wasn't as mutch of an intrest, you can always play the story as one of the other knigts, including their own set of abilities and playstyle along with a different story than the Blue Burrower has.
________________________________________________________________
If you don't feel like reading trought most of this here's a simplified list:
+Well written story.
+Great level design.
+Diverse enemies.
+Multiple playtroughs.
-Not much to hate about the game.
________________________________________________________________
This game simply proves that classics from the Snes era still stand strong after their time has passed, I greatly recommend this title for players who haven't seen any interesting platformers or if you want to jump back to when gaming shined the very brightest.
11/10

While I suspected retro indies were ♥♥♥♥♥, this has proven the opposite to me. I have never had such a joy in platformers ever since I played Mario Bros Deluxe on Gameboy color.

The game looks cool, it got very simple but perfect controls and a remarkable soundtrack.
It also got the classic difficulty of old platformers, which sometimes does feel a bit exaggerated (dying tens of times by touching spikes and falling in holes), but this could also be because I got used to the infinite checkpoints in modern style games.

If you doubt whether you will like this or not, just think of how it was to play the classic Mario Bros.
