Another long-ish one I think, ladies and jellybeans.
This is the first horror game that I have played, and despite the fact horror games usually don’t seem that appealing to me, Among the Sleep was the first to actually get me to buy and try.
Of course the main appeal to this game, at least in my opinion, is the quite dramatic perception change compared to usual games. You play as a little 2 year old boy, who can barely walk, whose outlook on life is a lot different to us adults. It’s actually pretty cool being so small and everything around you that in normal situations wouldn’t be a problem, suddenly become a challenge.
This game is also very surreal, at times I definitely got a “Alice: Madness Returns” feeling from it. You aren’t quite sure what is going on at times and it is never really spelt out for you, so on a certain level, this game is open to interpretation. It has a strong message to it, but the way that it was done and the details about the game make you wonder.
The level design was quite creative, the general mechanics are all the same for how the baby gets around, but each level had a different thing going on. It wasn’t too repetitive and of course that works in its favour.
Horror wise, someone that suffers with anxiety problems like myself would definitely get a little worked up playing this. The ambient sounds and noises are definitely enough to rustle those jimmies and it definitely caught me out a few times making me jump. But like I mentioned before, I don’t exactly play many horror games so I wouldn’t know what those Horror veterans strive for. Compared to other games maybe this isn’t scariest game of the year, but it is definitely creepy.
I think the only thing about this game people might not be so happy about would be its length. I personally don’t mind short games, I have a short attention span and I think as long as the game has core strengths to it, I’m happy with it being short and sweet. But other people maybe not so much. It took me 3 hours to finish the game (and start a new one to go back for 1 achievement) but it definitely felt shorter.
TL;DR : All in all, this game has an interesting story, great atmosphere and the tiny-man’s perception is new and refreshing for any game let alone horrors. Only fault being it was pretty short (for most people, I would assume).
