The Plan, two year anniversary!

Hey good people! On this day two years ago, we released our little experiment The Plan. We’ve been through some exiting times since then, and felt like providing a little retrospective.

Some facts:
  • Over 600.000 people have played the game!
  • Over 50,000 have downloaded the game through torrents, even though the game is available for free through both Steam and our own website as a direct download.
  • 1,293 number of posts in just one of the discussions on steam.
  • Almost 8.000 reviews on Steam, lingering at a 9/10 score :D
  • Houndreds of thousands of views on lets plays on Youtube.
  • 1 unlockable character to be found in the game *wink*
  • 1 hidden soundtrack to be found in the game *wink*
Retrospective
The game was made in the afternoon and evenings in the winter of 2013, with no money put into it. It was launched on the 10th of february, with a brief mail to the press and a newsletter to our friends. There it was, right on our page.

Strangely, people actually seemed to play it. Kind people even wrote about it on sites like Eurogamer, RockPaperShotgun, Escapistmagazine and indiegames. Numerous lets plays popped up on Youtube.

We expected it to be this small thing, but suddenly it was talked about, played, loved, most probably hated, in any case cared about. It was a short game, and a humble beginning for us, as we had actually never released anything before.

Releasing a game turned out to be healthy, and The Plan gave us a moral boost that helped a lot during the heavy months of crunch left until ATS was released.

The following summer, it was even selected to be showcased at the Nordic Game Indie Night in Malmø, and later for the Notgames fest exhibition in Cologne!

After that we suspected everything would calm down, and the game would fade away. Until one day, when an email materialized in our inbox, letting us know the game suddenly was Greenlit for release on Steam! This was part of the first huge batch of games to be greenlit, so it came as a huge surprise back then. We were even greenlit alongside one of our friends Rain Games, and their awesome Teslagrad.

And thus, one year after the initial release, our free experiment saw rebirth on Steam as well. Once again, we got to experience countless discussions and more writing.

In the new version we also made an addition to the end, combining previous player’s thoughts and comments into a huge starry sky. Again, we were amazed at some of the reactions, a huge thread detailing what people had typed, discussions about what a game is, stories about overcoming difficult times. We even received touching emails from people around the world.

Numerous lets players also posted lot’s of great videos, delving head first into the game. One made a little short film, and another asked himself after playing the game “Is purple really purple” while looking at his hand. Poetry.

I guess what we’re trying to say is that in the end, hearing and watching the reactions of you people is what makes game development worth it. What makes it count. And we are very grateful for every last person who play and share their thoughts on our games.

Thanks so much playing! (For those planning to play it, make sure you have the newest version: 1.1.3)

Patch notes
  • A hidden sound with a hidden message
  • Additional error checks when using the Steam API to prevent crashing

About This Game

A fly ascends to the skies, pondering the pointlessness of its brief existence.
The Plan was developed as a side project by Krillbite Studio, who's currently finishing their main project Among the Sleep.

  • "Hey, You Should Play This"
    - Patrick Klepek, Giantbomb
  • "Some may argue that The Plan isn't really a game and it definitely occupies the same terrain as Journey, Passage, and Dear Esther, but it's shorter than Journey, prettier than Passage, and less overwrought than Dear Esther, making it well worth taking a punt on for the low price of free."
    - Jeffrey Matulef, Eurogamer
  • "It’s that space in the mechanics for thought and interpretation that I appreciate most here. The Plan won’t break your brain, but it’s a nicely contemplative journey."
    - Nathan Grayson, RockPaperShotgun
  • "In order, here are the emotions I experienced during the three minutes it took me to play The Plan, the new free morsel from the Norweigan indie developer Krillbite: confusion, frustration, boredom, fear, amusement, delight, joy, enchantment, and regret. One of the things independent games ask us to do is accept that a three-minute game can be as valid as a thirty-hour one. Games like these make it hard to disagree."
    - Joseph Bernstein, Buzzfeed
  • "Krillbite Studio, the developers behind Among The Sleep, have gone on and released a most polished, visually stunning and freeware new game"
    - Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Indiegames.com
  • "Krillbite's The Plan is a short, sharp experimental deliberation on the meaning of life."
    - Andy Chalk, The Escapist

From now on, this epic story of a great hero will pass from generation to generation until the end of time.
After the end, i have to say that ' "The Plan" was brilliant".

Short & Sweet (& Free).
I played this game for about 10min, & enjoyed it all.
You play as a fly. Not sure if theres a goal, or if all games end the same (i won't say how mine ended in case you want to find out for yourself), but i had fun for the 10min that i played it.
Got 1/1 Achievements, another (easy) Perfect Game.
Also, it's free, it's a small DL (112mb), so there's no real reason not to try it.
Enjoy :)

First off I would like to make sure that all understand that like 9.03 M...this is not a game, but an experience. That being said I did really enjoy it! :) I took quite a few screenshots, as well. I found the graphics quite beautiful and very much enjoyed the short time spent to finish. Also there are a few surprises in store that I was not expecting...that in and of itself is worth the time. The main thing is that this does not cost you even one cent so I highly recommend everyone should try this out...since you can un-install when you are finished. ;)...One noteworthy statement...to get the achievement I did have to go to the forum...but however if you can figure it our for yourself it would of course be MUCH more rewarding! ;))...Don't wait...go try it today!!...Sla'inte!

well, this is a very short game where you control a fly and just fly around. without spoiling anything i want to say that the ending was awesome and it left a smile on my face.

give it a try, it only takes 5 minutes to complete and its free.

People say men shouldn't cry. I say ♥♥♥♥ them - i cried during this game. The plot is your a fly. You have to fly and explore that which surrounds you, though it may look a ♥♥♥♥ game it's truly not. It's like i can understand the fly by looking at it and listening to the music in the background. This is more than a game however - it is art; it is home.

I rate this a 10/10 -I literally have no complaints about this (some would argue) game.

ENGLISH and Italian Review
Recensione Inglese ed ITALIANA

English:

Another example of Art in videogames. I can't tell anything about this game: it's so short that it would be quicker and more simple for you to just play it. 2 minutes of your life. And they'll not be wasted, trust me. Nothing to lose. (Sorry for my bad english)

Italiano:

The Plan
9 / 10

Why would I bother to give 9 / 10 to a 5 minute experience ?

I believe that the developers accomplished exactly what they intended....

Here is what I enjoyed: Simple controls, adversity with resolution against wind, branches, falling leaves, a beautiful string sound track, a beautiful color palette, and a simple pull back of the camera during the 'game'.

Other reviewers have summarized nicely how all this relates to the human experience....

From a purely Bayesian perspective ask yourself, "What am I hoping for when I install and play this 'game' ?"

Just finished The Plan on Steam. it's a free game made by the developer of Among the Sleep while making that game. It's interesting. Took about 5 minutes to complete lol (actually, you can finish it in about 2 minutes if you really want to). Basically, you are a fly, and the game is about the short and meaningless existence of a fly (at least, that is what the product page says).

There isnt really anything to spoil, so I'll just tell you about it. It was very beautiful actually, and somewhat serene. You start out as a fly on the ground eating something, and then you start flying, ascending first into and through a tree, the forest, the clouds, and eventually into space, where...(actually the next part would be a spoiler, so I wont tell you how it ends).

It's free, and pretty cool as an experiment by a developers just taking a break from their real project. I recommend checking it out. Also...controller support. :)

Oh, and at the end, make sure you leave your caption. Each of the stars is actually somebody's end game caption. Just hover over a star to read what that player left. Some are really funny. There is a single achievement that can be had after the game ends and it goes back to the start menu by clicking on the song and replacing the fly with navi. However, the game keeps crashing when I try to do so.

edit: You can get the achievement any time after you finish the game once. After it crashed, I simply reloaded it, clicked on the song info, and got the cheevo. I then played as Navi (of OoT fame).

Cheers,
Peter

it's a flight simulator as a fly.
its dream is to fly to the highest place.
+ dark atmospheric environment with music.

for achievement hunters, it's a small free game,
and very easy : just 5 minutes to +1 perfect game!

how? just fly to the top about several minutes.
at the top (you'll die), type something.
you'll see ending screen.

click return, you'll go back to game menu.
there are game credits on the bottom now.
(it only appear after you finish the game)
click on it.

*bahdum...tss!*

I've seen Rock Simulators, I've seen Grass simulators and I've even seen Toast simulators. Nothing could've prepared my for the 'Stoned Fly' simulator. You see, I thought about this game night and day, attempting to draw a conclusion to why the lightbulb was in the sky... Then it hit me, like concrete in its intensity, the fly was inside some sort of room, but what were the bushes doing there. I immediately called the Police when I realised what this game was... You see, the trees are really Marijuana Bushes, think not? Why else would A fly glide directly into a lightbulb? What if the music is all just a figment of the flies imagination? What if the "Barking" everyone else thought was a dog was really the blood curlding screams of the Marijuana Bushes being burnt? This game is 100% the best Stoned Fly simulator I have ever played. 10/10, would play again.

This game is a very short piece of art.
The music is amazing and the game itself tells how vulnerable and short life really is.

I couldn't help but to wonder what life really is after finishing this.

You can also play as Navi from the Lengend of Zelda, so that's pretty cool.
Plus the game is free so if you ever happen to have 5-10 minutes of free time, do try it out!

Not much to see here. Some good graphics and atmosphere, but hardly a game or experience to speak of. Lasts 5 minutes, but costs nothing. You might as well play it, put it in your completed game list and move on with your life.
