About This Game

A fly ascends to the skies, pondering the pointlessness of its brief existence.
The Plan was developed as a side project by Krillbite Studio, who's currently finishing their main project Among the Sleep.

  • "Hey, You Should Play This"
    - Patrick Klepek, Giantbomb
  • "Some may argue that The Plan isn't really a game and it definitely occupies the same terrain as Journey, Passage, and Dear Esther, but it's shorter than Journey, prettier than Passage, and less overwrought than Dear Esther, making it well worth taking a punt on for the low price of free."
    - Jeffrey Matulef, Eurogamer
  • "It’s that space in the mechanics for thought and interpretation that I appreciate most here. The Plan won’t break your brain, but it’s a nicely contemplative journey."
    - Nathan Grayson, RockPaperShotgun
  • "In order, here are the emotions I experienced during the three minutes it took me to play The Plan, the new free morsel from the Norweigan indie developer Krillbite: confusion, frustration, boredom, fear, amusement, delight, joy, enchantment, and regret. One of the things independent games ask us to do is accept that a three-minute game can be as valid as a thirty-hour one. Games like these make it hard to disagree."
    - Joseph Bernstein, Buzzfeed
  • "Krillbite Studio, the developers behind Among The Sleep, have gone on and released a most polished, visually stunning and freeware new game"
    - Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Indiegames.com
  • "Krillbite's The Plan is a short, sharp experimental deliberation on the meaning of life."
    - Andy Chalk, The Escapist

A microcosm of all video games. Sometimes frustrating, beautiful, scary. Is there a deep metaphorical symbolism at play? Or are you merely a fly?

Invisible walls on the right and left sides of the "map" annoyed me.

Can you ponder at life, it's meaning and wonder if Grieg composed his theme while thinking of a fly; All that in 5 minutes tops ? Well yes, yes you can.

...Wow. The achievement is easy to get. This isn't really a game, it's more of an "experience". A damn good experience at that. This must be what my Sims are doing when I tell them to "Reach Nirvana" in the park.

Ordinarily I enjoy arthouse style games...

But I feel like I kinda just killed five minutes holding the "w" key.

There's not dialog...okay, that's fine. There's no objective...okay, that's fine too. There's no conflict whatsoever. That...that's not fine. There's no driving force, no reason to be doing anything whatsoever. There's no exploration beyond flying higher and higher until you can no longer ascend. Everything around you is fuzzy. For one brief moment I got caught in a spider web and hoped that perhaps there was some sort of consequence to that...but no.

If you want something casual, free to play, and thoughtful, play They Breathe and leave this one to the flies.

I know there's nothing much to it, but I loved the visuals, loved the ending and was not at all unhappy for the time I was pressing the button for it to go up. Then it ended, I laughed. Couldn't really ask for more, now could I?

You'll never be able to kill another fly again

TL;DR:
A small game that provokes a million thoughts. Even though the game can be completed in 5 minutes or less, it manages to make you think about an array of things. A must play.

Review:
A truly beautiful game about the brief existence of a fly, you fly higher and higher, dodging the obstacles as you go, until you reach the end. The game does not feature any voice acting or dialogue, but instead uses music and the envrionment to conjure up emotions you would have never expected from this game. It really is a shame that there isn't a soundtrack for this, as I'd happily buy it. Looking at the community hub, some amazing screenshots have been taken that show how breathtaking it is.

Also the achievement is very easy for this game, all you have to do is play through the game once, then click on the developers box at the start screen. Legend of Zelda fans will love this achievement, as the achievement icon and tag line is alike to Navi.

To sum it up, just give it a go. It's a nice way to kill 5 minutes and even if you didn't like the game, you'll get an easy achievement for it.

If you like my review, any feedback is appreciated and if you would like to see more reviews from me in the future, feel free to follow me!

This is a game that you can easily complete in 3-5 minutes without doing anything but keep the fly ascending to somewhere high above. While in doing this, if you take a few more minutes to think about what the story orr principle behind are supposed to tell. Then you might need much longer to figure out, evne a life time practice, really impressive.

this game has made understand a higher plane of existance in less than 6 minutes. the fly which represent the life of the common man, lifting from the ground a symbolism of birth. the strugle from freeing oneself form the web and scaping the system we live in. the stong winds which one most fight in order to perserve. realizing how insignificant our existance compare to the magnitude of the world. after reaching the star cluster I understood that we reach as high as we set our goals and dreams. to have such a meanigful ending. i understood the meanig of my life.

It's very quaint. Beautiful. Though, one could say the ending's a 'buz'kill.

Let me break this down:

Aesthetic:
Pretty, the fly is much more detailed than I had expected.
Foliage is detailed, and well modeled.
Textures are sharp.
Arrow keys to move, easy controls. Organic.

How it functions:
DISCLAIMER: If you have an appreciation for art, or understand how things relate in an abstract manner, then you will 'get' this experience.

The fly's size and strength relative to the world around it is portrayed very well. It's not just a sidescroller fly moving around robotically. The hovering, the wind, the physics objects, and other things (no spoilioops) are balanced well. A fly is often thought of as really nothing at all, and the simple obsticles here are some things i never thought of. Not saying that i left with a vastly different perspective on fly-life, nor were you ever larval so theres no character development, but the experience gave you a perspective you might have not considered.

So what?
Well, if you're a deep thinker or are at all observant, you can make connections to other things, perhaps personal things. Perhaps all you get out of this is: "Its a fly. Flies have short lives." Then thats ok. its free. Its supposed to be akin to journey.

Critique Section:

Oh boy. Well, it wasn't bad. I noticed music volume fluctuating in certain areas. The music also abruptly skipped at one point, (song plays for 10 seconds, then restarted) and the transition of "Levels" were met with very drastic music changes. This didn't affect my overall playthrough, though took out of immersion.

I noticed when i wasnt varying directions of motion there were less things happening. If motion is tied to events that makes sense, though idk it could have all been procedural and just so happened to spawn that way.

I think an egg and larva would have worked nicely, not really even as complex. Tap button to break egg, wiggle wiggle, eat, wiggle wiggle, stay still and slowly turn brown, timelapse, spam buttons to wiggle out, walk around before flight is an option, begin currently. Adds more content (and more work i know), but extends the statement in an artistic way IMO.

Anyway, i think its pretty good. 9/10 will play again.

To any and all F***heads who are saying "its not a game, its boring, its too simple how is this deep when its so simple etc":

Its not a game, you're correct. Yay good for you. It's a simulation at best, and even then its still more of an art piece.
It's 5 mins of your time. If it takes you less than that to become bored then you're either a small child, an fps hypebeast, or this sort of medium isn't for you. Let me tell you that if you don't try this out its perfectly alright. If you do however, play it through and just let your mind go, but keep note of the atmosphere and scope of the whole thing.
Holy ♥♥♥♥ complex does not at all equate to 'deep', which in and of itself is a generalization. The more stimuli one has, the less one is in a state of inner thought. The difference here between Dear Esther and this game is the matter of subject. The heavy island in DE is aiming at photo-realism with dense clutter and grass, open feilds, etc. The fly in its little sliver of the woods is so small and so brittle that having a 3d open world fly game would not allow for the same kind of experience as DE, which this has, although no narrative.

Guys, thanks for reading if you did.

This is a fun little game to play if you just want to relax for a couple of minutes. It's an easy game of course, since the runtime is about 6 minutes. Even though it is so short, it's pretty good! I would definitly recommend it, especially for the ending.
On the achievement hunter side of things, it's very easy to get the one achievement. Click on a certain screen, you'll find it soon.
Go play it!

I decided to venture on my journey as a fly. I dodged clouds and the wind, trying to rise higher and higher. At one point, I was trapped in a spider's web, expecting to become lunch at any moment. Either the spider's AI was broken, or the gods took pity on me, since I had always tried to be a good fly. I escaped from the web and rose higher and higher, becoming one with the stars. Eventually, I saw the glowing portal of heaven, or perhaps it was the cavernous jaws of a glowing flyswatter.

It's a free game with a nice soundtrack. Enjoy.
