"A voxel based shooter with roguelike elements. An okay game, but combat feels repetitive and shallow. The art style might also turn some people off.."

Early Access Review
The game itself is not bad. I've found it decently enjoyable. Not a huge amount of replay value, but I got to the end once. The problem with Paranautical Activity is the developer.

The developers have continuously insulted and mocked people who bought their game. In addition, they have been less than honest. The game was marketed for over a year as having co-op incoming (and as of this review, the store page says the developers are still working on it), yet that feature was suddenly canceled. The developers insist they have been working hard on bugfixes and content updates, yet have not released anything, even missing a promised deadline by over two months (patch is yet to be released as of this review). Furthermore, the devs have been silent on the forums (when not aggresively insulting the people who bought their game) and insist you should visit their website, where they will keep people updated; visiting their webiste reveals no new news in two months, and the last message was just an apology for a delay (that has still not been resolved). And when fans have the nerve to say they aren't being treated fairly? The devs say people are "entitled." Do not buy this game, do not support this kind of rude immaturity from developers, do not support Early Access games that are deceptively marketed.

The game had lots of promise, and planned features that won't ever see the day. The developers, in the steam store page, say "We're planning to add multiplayer co-op in the very near future.." and now they have scrapped that feature entirely without any sort of compensation to the people who bought the game for this exact reason.

Do not buy this game. Do not support Code Avarice (the developers) in any project they choose to move on to. They've taken our money and they've abandoned their game.

As for the actual review:

Pros: Rogue-like FPS.

Cons: Very shallow. Clunky movement. Everything feels the same after playing for 5-10 minutes. There is just so very little content that it is insulting to call it a Rogue-like.

Steam's "Early Acces" is about giving you early acces to a game to see it in developement, until it's 100% done, for your early support to the developers. And for your money you should get a product with all the features they promised.

Steam's "Early Acces" isn't about buying a half-made game and be happy after that anyway, no matter if the devs abondon it or cut out important features they advertised.

"On Steam, developers make their own decisions about promotion, features, pricing and publication. However, Steam does require honesty from developers in the marketing of their games." - Chris_D - Valve Employee

Many of us bought extra copies of this game cuz the devs advertised it with a co-op function arriving soon and we all got scammed.
They arrogantly refuse to settle the situation and ban people from the Community Hub who complain about it.

Valve, please protect your customers!

Take Doom. Now turn the health into hitpoints, turn the graphics into blocks, turn the background music into dubstep, partition the levels into rooms, generate those rooms randomly, and toss in some upgrades you can buy in a shop, and I think that's Paranautical Activity in a nutshell.

If this sounds like you'd love it, I urge you to check the forums, since the game is essentially "finished" according to the developer, which not everybody agrees with. I have no opinion on that -- what I do have an opinion on is whether I like PA, and the answer is no. Playing it just reminds me of better shooters I'd rather be playing, better roguelikes I'd rather be playing and better music I'd rather be listening to.
