Dev Log #46: Version 1.0.1.4 Release - Quality of Life Improvements

Hey guys. Along fixing the bugs we've been working on some quality of life improvements, so without further ado here they are.

Fonts - We've replaced one of the game's fonts to improve readability and also added more size options.

Outlines - We've added character outlines which should improve visibility and make targeting somewhat easier when things are happening behind walls and other obstacles.

Inventory filters - We've replaced inventory filter combo box with icons and also regrouped item categories in a way we believe will be most practical.

Combat stats tooltips - We've added descriptions for all the different stats in the combat stats window when you mouse over them.

Combat speed settings - Combat movement and action speed can now be adjusted in the game's options.

New save system - This is strictly under the hood thing and nothing is changed regarding how and when you can save or load the game (old saves are compatible with the new version). For those advanced users - we archived the separate zone files to improve save/load performance and also got rid of the temporary current game structure on the disk and moved it to memory.

Other minor stuff

  • Critical crossbow hits now also affect elemental damage (acid, shock and incendiary) from special bolts
  • When attacking in melee from stealth, target's dodge rating will be ignored if it hasn't detected you yet
  • Added more crafting components and ammo to Deep Caverns
  • Added a few more hints to certain Deep Caverns dialogs
  • Quinton's mushroom growing room is now accessible
  • Added a number of Lower and Upper Metro areas to better connect certain places

Bug fixes
  • Critical damage modifier from items will now be properly applied to fist weapons (e.g. infused ancient rathound boots)
  • You will no longer be able to snipe down certain obstacles that were not meant to be sniped down
  • Jawbone will now correctly be considered a crossbow for the purpose of trading
  • Nicolas will no longer return from the dead to haunt you
  • Cut throat attack will no longer fail if you get detected during the attack itself (the eye wasn't read when you started performing the attack but the attack itself pushed it into red state)
  • When incendiary bombs cause a character to burn they will now properly suffer 150% of the original damage as the description says
  • You can no longer attempt to burst or rapid fire with an empty weapon
  • Fixed Jerre Franz not healing the player in certain instances
  • Fixed Fort Apogee zone security settings
  • Fixed a certain important woman not properly reacting to a player's response regarding her husband's fate
  • Fixed certain responses not appearing when speaking to the Faceless centaur near Foundry
  • Fixed being able to start the Find Blaine quest even after certain events took place
  • Silas' questline will now properly continue questline after the player pays him instead of doing his initial quests
  • Fixed a missing dialog option during Mediant Samuel's second mission
  • Fixed the unintended failing of the Kill Rathound King quest after a certain event has taken place
  • Crawlers and rathounds are now neutral to each other
  • No more free repairs from Mykola
  • Nicolas' and Olivia's quests will properly fail upon death
  • Fixed Maura's faction id not setting correctly after you've helped her
  • Accussing a certain person of comitting a murder and then initiating combat through dialogue will no longer cause the whole station to become hostile
  • Fixed the interview cutscene playing even when the player is hostile to the Tchortists; that quest will also properly fail now
  • Fixed dialogue options not appearing when asking Oskar and Lt. Stratford about a certain man
  • Fixed Arke consoles being hackable even after the player turns off the security system
  • Doppelgangers are now immune to Expose Weakness
  • All elevators should now properly notify the player when they are unpowered when used
  • Shield emitter weight will now be properly calculated when adding optional components
  • Various typos and map fixes

That's all for now. I hope you guys like the changes. As for what we'll be doing next - we'll primarily be working on more content for Underrail so stay tuned for more info on that in the coming months.

Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat.

The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught midst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as the violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.

An incredibly rare gem in a modern world of "rpgmaker anime-inspired casual rpg".

* A true old-timey turn-based-combat RPG that any fan of fallout would absolutely adore.

* It's INCREDIBLY long and intricate for its price, it's very well balanced and actually difficult(!) at times. Good luck in the end-game is all I'm gonna tell you :)) I have over 100 hours on it and I never even replayed it.

* The writing is definitely the equal of fallout/fallout2. The gameworld is very well fleshed out, interesting, has its history and native wildlife and all that, enough to make you feel like you're in a gameworld and not just a game, though there are some... well, there's quirkiness that might be explained in the sequel. Lots of stuff left open.

* The turn based combat is very well executed and balanced, but the only niggle is that your character is almost always alone, so turn based is a bit wasted there. Turn based is very good for tactics, but when there's only one character, it never really gets tactical.

In summary, a real gem and must-buy for any RPG lover.

Only wish that in the sequel they add some followers for your character, for tactics to be more fun.

Underrail is easily the best game I have ever played, and I suspect that it will hold this title for many, many years to come. I cannot recommend it highly enough. To list the reasons why Underrail is an absolute gem of a game and an exemplar of its genre would take ages, so I'll be relatively brief.

As an "Isometric Turn-Based Western Indie RPG", Underrail clearly fits itself into a very unique little niche in the gaming market--and for this reason it has existed in almost total obscurity from the main gaming limelight. However, it is in this niche that Underrail truly thrives as a unique game and an even more uniquely captivating experience.

If the 300-something hours I have (as of the writing of this review) happily dedicated to the enjoyment of this game are any indication, Underrail can really suck you in. The world of Underrail is incredibly fleshed-out, and is beaten in this regard only by the impressive amount of solid characterisation that goes into crafting literally every single noteworthy NPC in the massive (and I truly mean massive) overworld of this game.

The music, while lacking in the number of actual tracks for the game, does a good job of furthering the atmosphere of Underrail by being, you guessed it, almost purely atmospheric. However, this isn't to say that Underrail doesn't have any action music! It most certainly does, and the combat music can really get you head-banging. (And the final boss music, hoo boy, talk about ♥♥♥♥ing awesome!!)

The mechanics are easily the most impressive part of Underrail, since they are arguably even more complex and thought-out than the overworld is! Combat works in a turn-based manner, similar to the early Fallout titles (of which Underrail has taken much inspiration, and only in a good way) and feels very intuitive to anyone who has touched a turn-based title in the past. Although I will admit that new players to the turn-based genre may have some difficulty developing their skills, as the tutorial for the game is rather... lackluster.

Bartering and crafting can take pretty significant roles in playing Underrail, and while these systems are excellently handled, bartering especially can be rather confusing--if not downright aggravating--for new players. Merchant NPCs aren't just going to buy every single piece of junk you have on you like in every other game out there. Instead they have very specific kinds of items that they are looking for; one merchant may be looking to buy two firearms and a pair of boots, another may only be willing to take an electronic device or up to 3 grenades. Of course, all of the merchants are more than happy to take your cash, so you can feel free to buy everything they have if you can afford it (and can carry all of it).

And don't even get me started on the story; best I've ever seen in a game, hands down. Beyond perfect.

So, yeah, as you can see I have a lot of good things to say about Underrail. The only bad thing: no shotguns. But, hey, you get awesome crossbows and throwing knives and massive sledgehammers which can zap people with electricity when you hit them and stun them for a turn. Oh, and you can craft grenades and explosive traps that shoot out napalm onto people, and if that doesn't sound awesome then hell if I know what does.

tl;dr: buy Underrail. It's $15, and for a game this perfect it really ought to be $60.

Underrail is a good game, for the right gamer. Just keep 3 things in mind...

1) Don't use the "Oditties" exp system. It punishes you when you go off your own, as you only get as much exp as the amount of wierd things you collect, and each thing only counts a limited amount of times. For example, if you kill a TON of crawlers, (nasty sneakers who will posion you and hide until he vemon incapicates you) and you will, you only get exp for the first 3, thats it. So at all costs avoid that.

2) Make a paper map (yes draw it out on paper) as you WILL get lost alot. That is particually bad as the caves are huge and look VERY much alike.

3) Don't dump Strength, as there is a ton you will want to carry with you, and crawling d2 high encumbrance around really sucks.

A grenadefest where you're forced to save/load often to get the best possible results from the grenades that you'll keep throwing in order to not die to the most basic of enemies. The game is brutal and repetitive, but the biggest problem is that it's a bore. It's a shame it took me more than two hours to realise that. Now I can't refund it.

Fallout 1 & 2 were just about my favorite games of all time. I never really found another game that captured that play style until I bought Underrail. It has a great turn-based combat system, a very unique xp mechanic, great leveling system, cool post-apocalyptic atmosphere, and an unfortunately lack-luster story. This game is drenched in atmosphere but the locations just aren't that interesting; there's never a town, ruin, or cave that makes you say 'wow this is cool'.

Quest descriptions can be annoyingly vague at times. 'Get 5 things and bring it back to Ezra', if it just said 'get 5 things and bring it back to Erza on the 8th floor cyber-lab' it would have saved me a lot of wiki searches. I don't want the game to hold my hand and give me a big arrow on the floor telling me which way to go, but I don't want to have to write a bunch of directions down on a piece of paper just so I remember where to go back to hours later.

There's no map system which was annoying, but not a huge deal. There's no running in Underrail which is annoying and is a huge deal. Getting from place A to place B takes a lot of time in this game. There's a pseudo-quick-travel system later in the game but it doesn't help that much. There's a quest later in the game with The Beast, which requires nearly an hour of just walking back and forth talking to person A, person B, etc. I just about quit playing it was so tedious, but I'm glad I didn't because despite all it's flaws this is still a really really fun game. If you're like me and you loved Fallout 1&2, this is the game you've been waiting almost 20 years for.

This has excellent character building that supports a LOT of playstyles. It's worth checking out for that alone. But be aware the difficulty can spike at times, in terms of enemy health, damage, and numbers. Also, there are mines everywhere. I'm having a difficult time enjoying the game now that every single room has 3-5 hidden mines that instakill me. (seriously, there's a place called Depot A, literally every single room has them.)

There's an ability, a skill, and a perk that help spot mines before they kill you, but that's their only use if you're not playing ranged or a trapper. I don't like having to invest points just to avoid quickloading so often.

I went off on a tangent. Other than the mines, really fun!

Overall:
It's a niche title and bumpy/rough in many respects. Starts slow, then picks up by the time you get to Junkyard.

The Bad:
No fast-forward option for dealing with the large amounts of walking around (use cheat engine).
Last act (DC) is somewhat too long for its own good.
All builds are (mostly) viable, some builds are more viable than others. (*See below)
McGuffin chase.
Doesn't completely resolve its main storyline and sets up for sequel.
Pulls a bit too much on its Fallout heritage lore wise.
Rahm couldn't answer a question if its life dependent on it.

The Good:
Fallout & metro 2033 mashup.
Fun and well paced during the first 2/3s of the game.
A lot of content for a reasonable price.
Underrail is as maze-y and expansive as you'd expect.
Has a fallout 1/2/NV post-game recap of what you did throughout the game and the consequences to the inhabitants of underrail.

Other notes:
Get cheat-engine and use the speedhack to fast-walk around, otherwise you'll grow old and die before finishing the game.
Make a paper map of underrail as you travel, or use Pipboy's excellent map.
Vendors aren't a dumping ground and have limited cash on hand, which means that bullets are your next-best currency for when you want to sell things but they're out of charons.
Only two questlines are mutually exclusive (Free Drones vs US, and Junkyard Factions), the rest can all be accomplished in one playthrough.
(Minor) The fellow in Junkyard isn't asking you to plant a bomb, so don't fret about that. (I thought he did and said no, which meant I missed out on a notable amount of content.)

Underrail is a ton of fun. There are many "old school" rpgs being released these days after kickstarter became so popular, but along with the Shadowrun series this game came the closest to making me feel like I was playing Planescape or BG2.

That's not because it's an extremely similar game, mechanically. In many ways Underrail is more like a turn based Deus Ex than Baldur's Gate, but there are a few things about it that I didn't know I was looking for when I backed Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2, etc.

What makes Underrail so special, besides the awesome and absorbing combat/character build system, is the great immersion of the setting. The music is fantastic. I enjoy walking around the maps listening to the janky, mechanical and ominous soundtrack (serious fallout/planescape flashbacks). The lore is presented as background, not through infodumps or encyclopedias, and is all over the place in small, rewarding tidbits. The monster ecology is cool. The visual design is unbelievably good for a game created by one person. The drawn 2d look with dynamic lighting is just as interesting to look at as a AAA 3d title. The sounds are satisfying, from the punchy gunfire to the weird glug of my purple telekinetic wrecking ball.

This is not a party based, or even a particularly story based, RPG. But it is crafted so well that it doesn't matter. There are no companions, but every character that you speak with substantively has some detail about them to flesh them out. Motivations make sense and the moral landscape of the game is very dark.

Can't recommend it enough if you enjoy detailed turn based combat and interesting settings.

It is a slow game. Mostly just wondering around in an endless maze of caves with no map to guide you. I loved it.
If you're used to the kind of hand-holding you get from AAA games like Skyrim - quest markers, area map, someone always around to point you to the correct direction, this game might not be for you. You're on your own.

I played as an assassin, lurking around and backstabbing people. Was fund yet challenging - can't just run into a group of baddies and start whacking, it takes some planning to survive. At one point I set up about 30 traps to be able to stop the goons coming at me. Bled those guys out with bear traps.

Crafting is an interesting part of the game. Hunt down the best quality parts and create the most awesome weapon or armor in the game. Or just skip that and spend a heap of coin instead, your choice. The economy in the game was a bit out of balance, I think, as my locker in the private quarters was always full of expensive weapons to sell, and I never ran out of money either. Except for the Deep Caverns where money makes no difference whatsoever

Lovely, lovely game. I thoroughly enjoyed the "just wander around in caves and see what you can find" style of playing. The game itself won't force you to hurry up, so you've got all the time in the world. Refreshing to see a game like this among the hordes of way-too-dumbed-down games out there.

UnderRail indeed is one of the most magnificent RPGs I have ever played. Prepare yourself for an old-school post-apocalyptic masterpiece, where noone can be trusted and everyone play their game. Brutal envirohment and hardcore fightinng system won't get you bored, as well as overwhelming plot and mind-blowing twists of it. If any of you suffer gaming impotence, buy this game and launch it IMMEDIATELY.

Besides everything good and adorable in this game. I disliked some things in game mechanics and, of course, Boss fight due to it extreme difficulty for specific character builds. However, It is just a question of tastes.

Very cool and enternaining despite simplistic graphics. The game doesn't let you to become bored: once you think you know everything, the game makes a sudden change in the plot or gives you a fun quest. At this point, I am 60 hours into the game and it is still fun.

10/10 for the money spent.

A decent Fallout-lite with excellent value for the pricetag.

You can:

Make a heavy armor machinegun toting tank, a naked drug addict with a knife, or anything in between.
Own and customize your own house.
Keep heads of certain bosses for trophies
Fight your way to the top of arena... and still be ignored by everybody.
Side with your enemies... mutliple times!
Set everything on fire... and laugh during all the screaming.
Become a wizard!
Converse with a talking pig.
Become the lord of all rathounds.

Combat is turn based, which dosn't matter to me, I like both rulesets, but the enemy AI is intelligent and large groups will work together against you. I recommend explosives.

Aside from some scripting issues and a few (very) annoying quests, underrail is for the fallout fan on a budget, or anyone new to the genre, with enough complexity to make mistakes, but not so much to overwhelm.
