About This Game

Super Amazing Wagon Adventure is a fast-paced 2d shooting game with a random story. You control a group of three migrants traveling west along a wagon trail. The game consists of short scenes that are sequenced together in a semi-random way to tell a crazy adventure story. One minute you could be massacring a herd of buffalo, the next attacked by eagles while falling off a cliff.

Features

  • Stupidly fast. The scene changes every 3-30 seconds with some new enemy or obstacle to overcome. Bears, snakes, spiders, buffalo, avalanches, fire, scorpions, sharks, bandits, wolves... the list is long.
  • Random. The scenes you play are sequenced together in a semi-random way, so you never know which dangers you will face. Rare and bizarre events provide extra surprises.
  • Unlockable wagons. New wagons with special weapons and characteristics are awarded for completing challenging tasks and surviving rare events.
  • Customize your party. You pick your party members’ names and appearances. Name them after your friends and then watch them die one by one in brutal ways.
  • A true challenge. There are no checkpoints or save games. When a party member dies, that party member stays dead for the rest of the game. The game is fair but unforgiving so beating it is a true accomplishment.
  • 10 minutes to beat, hours to complete. If you can survive, the game only takes around 10 minutes to beat, but the random scenes, high difficulty, and unlockables keep you playing much longer.
  • Survival mode. After conquering the main adventure, try one of the endless survival modes. See how long you can last against an infinite pack of wolves or a limitless stream of bears.

I battled my inner demons,
Caught Space Rabies,
Got attacked by rabid squirrels,
Went up into space,
Got sucked into a tornado,
Murdered everyone in a bank robbery,
Got gored by bisons,
Glitched the game,
Became one with nature,
AND....

Got killed by the smell of a dead skunk.

This is my first ever Steam Review and one that I should have done a long, long, LONG time ago (apologies to Sparsevector :P).

The game still surprises me to even this day with new stuff that I've never seen. I don't want to make it sound like a fact, but you will be hard-pressed to find someone who's played this game longer than I have, so for me to say that it still produces new scenes I've never experienced before, that's a stunning achievment.

I won't go into detail about the finer points of controls, branching story-arc, the "meta" game or anything like that. All I will say is that I've enjoyed playing the game for many years now, and the ability to rename the travelers is an instant trip to hilarity every time someone new dies. For less than the cost of a decent sandwich, I've enjoyed over 100+ hours and many years of entertainment from SAWA and it continues to be a staple of my routine.

I don't do numerical ratings, so take my review for what it is: Two thumbs up.

Take Oregan's Trail background, ideas and mechanics and... throw them away, because this is Super Amazing Wagon Adventure, a insane shooter and dual-stick-shooter with random events that makes you wish American History involved rabid squirrels and laser guns.

Super Amazing Wagon Adventure is a side scrolling shooter. It's very clearly based on games from the 80s. You have to get your wagon from point A to point B... and shot things along the way. There are cool powerups, interesting little random events that may help or harm your run, traders to buy things from, and multiple forks in the road to keep the game fresh and replayable. There are also different unlockable wagons to use, each with their own advantages, disadvantages, and special quirks. There's not a whole lot more to say about the gameplay. It's mostly just automatically scrolling to the right as you move around the screen and shoot. It can be pretty easy or very hard depending on your choices and your luck. It's rather short, but highly replayable. I love the art style and the soundtrack is also pretty freakin' catchy. Plus the appropriate sound effects, of course. I really wish I could write a longer, more detailed review, but that's all there really is about it. It's fun, addictive, and only costs 3 bucks at full price. If you enjoy games you can complete in a sitting, this is great. And it keeps you coming back for more with the random events and different wagons. The only downside for this game is that... I wish there was more. More stuff in it. A longer trail. More events. Just... more everything. But I can't fault the game for any of that because what it DOES have is all great and makes for a wonderful experience that not many games aim to give you anymore. If you're thinking about it, just get it. You might not sink hundreds of hours into it, but the ones you DO put into it will all be worthwhile playtime, no filler.

Super Amazing Wagon Adventure gets an 8/10 for being a very fun little experience with lots of replayability and that throwback feeling.

This game is certainly well worth the money, especially seeing as it's so cheap. It's massively difficult, but that's part of the charm. As you go through the various levels, it'll be a different experience each time, with only a few major stages kept the same. Every level almost never failed to make me laugh out loud, due to both the randomness of the situation and the sheer ridiculousness of it's difficulty. You'll end up smiling as your wagon is sucked into a tornado along with some buffalo, only to immediately stop as one smashes into your wagon, killing the one person dying of Typhoid. You'll feel a sense of relief after surviving an avalanche, only to feel a deep sense of dread as wolves attack during the next avalanche.

As you progress through the game, you'll come across multiple random encounters, and if you survive them, you'll recieve an upgraded weapon (until you die) and/or a new wagon (to keep forever, across all new games). The new wagons, as well as keeping up with the game's humour (e.g a UFO wagon that fires laser beams), will each have both an improvement (larger projectiles, splash damage etc) and a flaw (harder to control, lower rate of fire etc). It's up to you to decide which best suits you.

While the gameplay is certainly good, if not utterly frustrating, the soundtrack alone is a good reason to buy the game. For the low price and sheer replayability, it gets a well deserved 8.5/10 from me.
