“How To Survive is more than just a solid zombie role-playing game, it's also one of the best games of the year. With its mix of Diablo-esque hack and slash and dual-stick shooter action, 505 Games' newest Xbox Live Arcade game is a real surprise. It has a deep crafting system and a world you can't help but want to explore. How To Survive rewrites the book on zombie RPGs!”
90% – Gaming Nexus

“While there have been several games that have recently released that fall into the growing zombie survival genre, How to Survive manages to do enough differently to earn its place among the crowd. The game’s strong emphasis on crafting and juggling basic human needs helps distinguish itself from other titles. Additionally, the story campaign features a tale that manages to contain a few plot twists despite its simplicity. One area where How to Survive shines is the game’s strange brand of humor which is helped along by the title’s decent voice acting. In all, How to Survive is recommended to any fans of either the undead or survival simulators. Those who enjoy intricate crafting or top-down gaming should also give it a look.”
4 Stars – Examiner

“In terms of graphic and sound design, How to Survive looks good and sounds even better. The lighting gives real-time shadows based on not only the source but the time of day as the shadows move with the passing sunlight. The island is beautifully rendered, and animations are fluid and zombie deaths are pleasingly gory, chunks of body parts will liter the ground and roll depending on the shape of the surface”
8/10 – Gamer Horizon

Its a good game. Does not seem to be your avarage zombiegame, has nice crafting system and good survival elements so its deeper than other popular zombie games like zombi or l4d.

Audio is decent,
Crafting is quick and simple,

Kovac is funny and entertaining.

Only lacking I can think of is a Storage box, so i do not have to arrange my inventories on the ground.

Had played the game before from another platform, and seeing the big sale on steam.
Just had to buy it again to support.

I Recommend.

We all had that dream of being in a zombie apocalypse, tearing down through hordes of mindless brain-eaters as we show off our complete bad-assery. I know you have that dream but it’s not enough to just own a crossbow and ride a big bike towards the sunset. You’ve got to learn How to Survive! Developed by EKO Software and published by 505 Games, How to Survive is a survival RPG set on an unknown tropical, zombie-infested archipelago and your task is to find a way to leave the islands and survive while doing so!

GRAPHICS

The game truly captures that “tropical island” feel with a very good graphics quality and it’s funny how when you are playing online, you could see other players’ tombstones on the area they died. Also, the character finishers are nothing but absolute awesomeness. The only thing I did not quite like with the graphics is the fact that being in isometric view, some loots appear so small and the marker sometimes does not help in locating or identifying them. (Grade: 89%)

AUDIO

While Kovac’s voice acting is comedic gold, I think the atmosphere of the game is quite inconsistent if you’re going to judge it by listening to the audio. All throughout, you would hear an eerie background music but then Kovac starts talking to you with his dark humor or you start reading some texts from the survival guide. All of a sudden, the game gives you that light, happy feeling which is in complete contradiction with the background music. In addition to this, I find it worth mentioning that there is a big audio glitch that reveals too much of the story way before it is supposed to happen. I won’t dive into details to prevent spoilers but you’ll know when you see (or hear) it. (Grade: 45%)

GAMEPLAY

Inventory management; scarce supplies especially on higher difficulty; dynamic weather system; day and night cycle with the threat increasing at night; hunger, thirst, and energy meters, what else would you want for a zombie survival game? Even fishing is realistic! There is only one thing I did not like with the game’s great gameplay mechanics – there is way TOO MUCH ammo even in the hardest difficulty. Once you get your first gun, you can just forget about your melee weapons and just shoot your way to freedom. It kind of destroys the “look-for-resources feel” of the game. (Grade: 95%)

STORY

I don’t think there is any depth in How to Survive’s story. Right from the beginning, you can guess who the main villain is and the quests, both main and secondary, are just your standard “go and fetch” quests. There’s no background story for the characters nor the setting, as well as the infection. You’re basically there to fetch things for people so that they can help you get off the archipelago. (Grade: 65%)

REPLAYABILITY

With the different characters having different skill sets, it is quite interesting to see how you change your gameplay style with each character. In addition to this, the DLCs added new game modes and game difficulties that would certainly stretch your time mastering the art of survival! (Grade: 98%)

FINALS

If you are looking for a survival RPG game with a light story and a magnificent gameplay then this game is worth a shot. Despite the lackluster storyline and the confusing audio and atmosphere, I really think that How to Survive delivers quite well in terms of enjoyment, gameplay quality and, of course, hard lessons on how to survive an archipelago full of brain-hungry zombies!

FINAL GRADE: 78%
It's okay but Kovac wants a perfect score!

Vertigo alert. If you're like me and try to find games that don't induce motion sickness by keeping the camera steady, stay away from this one. It looks like an isometric top down ARPG camera design, but the camera lurches up and down to keep your character in view. Vertigo in 5 minutes play. Also, has 'social' play enabled by default, which for a single player game entails displaying hundreds of player graves with their names sprawled all over the screen. It can be disabled in options though. The annoying parrot shouting 'hey!' and 'hahaha' offscreen cannot be disabled. Not even recommended at 90% discount. This goes into my junk folder.

Thoroughly enjoyable twin stick melee/shooter. Can't speak for the DLCs as I didn't get them; other reviews of them are mixed.

I was quite ceptical when I first got this game, one of my friends told me to try it and it was on sale, while it seemed to have an interesting game play zombie islands stories were never really my thing, but let me tell you, I am loving every second of it now!

This game is entertaining, challenging and involving, while I play I am always wondering what will happen next and it is built in a way that it is not too easy but you rarely get stuck you flow greatly throughout the whole game, the plot is great and it's also quite humorous which is not something you normally have in most survival games. You can play on your own or with friends, although the multiplayer view can be sometimes frustrating it is always amusing to go through the story with friends by your side.

Overall: It's a great game and I honestly recommend it!

The game is fun in single player, but in multiplayer it is impossible. It's only playable with 1 friend and the one who doesn't run the server is pretty much like a sidekick in an old RPG game. When receiving items from characters, only player 1 gets them. Then after that, player 2 gets player 1's old items which are inferior.
I recommend you play this game in single player only. It's a load of fun.

A different take on the survival/zombie genre that works quite well on PC. The game uses a fantastic crafting system and challenging gameplay as you progress. I was not able to keep on playing after 4 hours simply because I got tired of the grind that is slaughtering hundreds of zombies.
