“How To Survive is more than just a solid zombie role-playing game, it's also one of the best games of the year. With its mix of Diablo-esque hack and slash and dual-stick shooter action, 505 Games' newest Xbox Live Arcade game is a real surprise. It has a deep crafting system and a world you can't help but want to explore. How To Survive rewrites the book on zombie RPGs!”
90% – Gaming Nexus

“While there have been several games that have recently released that fall into the growing zombie survival genre, How to Survive manages to do enough differently to earn its place among the crowd. The game’s strong emphasis on crafting and juggling basic human needs helps distinguish itself from other titles. Additionally, the story campaign features a tale that manages to contain a few plot twists despite its simplicity. One area where How to Survive shines is the game’s strange brand of humor which is helped along by the title’s decent voice acting. In all, How to Survive is recommended to any fans of either the undead or survival simulators. Those who enjoy intricate crafting or top-down gaming should also give it a look.”
4 Stars – Examiner

“In terms of graphic and sound design, How to Survive looks good and sounds even better. The lighting gives real-time shadows based on not only the source but the time of day as the shadows move with the passing sunlight. The island is beautifully rendered, and animations are fluid and zombie deaths are pleasingly gory, chunks of body parts will liter the ground and roll depending on the shape of the surface”
8/10 – Gamer Horizon

Pretty fun game, once you get past all of the annoying/cheesy "Kovac's Rules" tutorials.

Explore, kill, loot, craft, eat, drink, sleep, repeat.

It's a neat concept and kind of fun, but it didn't suck me in enough that I'd ever play it again after my first session.

This is a very poor quality console port. While the game reviewed well on consoles (mostly because console gamers don't get a lot of exposure to high quality games), the port was handled very badly.

Ostensibly it's a top down survival horror game where you scavenge and level up and improve your skills to survive and fight off zombies.

This is a successful premise, but the implementation is terrible.

Graphics: Great... for a console. Substandard for PC. Low resolution artifacts, low poly models.

Gameplay: Gameplay is tolerable but the technical problems prevent the game going anywhere. Controls are munted because the developers never saw a mouse before. The choice of top-down graphics is also problematic - as usual, first person is almost always best for PC. But the developers don't care about PC gamers - just the money they have.

Technical: One of the worse console ports I've seen in a long time. The game is limited to 4:3 aspect ratio on PC and you cannot change the resolution. Lack of video options compound the problem. Finally, the DX implementation is bad so you end up with a ghost mouse pointer at all times. Controls are also terrible because of the lazy console port. The game isn't stable and you get frequent crashes.

It's sad to see a good premise abused by low effort, poor quality, lazy developers. They have no right to push bad console ports onto Steam and ask to be paid for it.

This game is a huge disappointment to what I was expecting in the screenshots and videos. The controls are dreadful(pressing space to sprint). I only played 20 minutes before I quit this piece of garbage. The third person was decent, but the aiming system was awful. For zombie games, this is one of the worst games I've played.

Terrible game. Boomerang is easy to make and the only weapon you need. Combat is boring. Terrible interface. Far too easy.

The game as a whole is entertaining and for the price right now (1$) it's a steal. The combat, crafting, day and night cycles, random weather events, and random enemy spawns is awesome. My only gripe with this game is the fact that when you play COOP, only the Host gets to keep exp and items earned during said session, your "guest" you buddy would get diddly squat after the session. That is unless the other player syncs with the Host, problem with that by doing so it overwrites your local character save to match your host, what that means is if the host hasn't gotten far into the game you risk of losing items since the game matches you to it's host game. It's pretty weird how they handled the COOP portion of the game. Though that's my only negative it kinda is a big deal since i got this game with the sole purpose of playing with my friends.

This is just a heads up to other buyers regarding COOP. I recommend this game but be aware of the limitations of the coop mode for this game.

it's a charming little game. feels like one of them flash games you played in high school during lunch before they blocked all the game sites. only thing I didn't like was the save points, but that's very small.

Fun little survival game. Easy to pick up, with enough direction to get you going but there is still some experimenting and fun to be had.

I was expecting a cool game and I got a cool game, How to Survive blends the type of gameplay you experience in games like Diablo and Dungeon Siege with a survival system and zooooombies . So at default it is already a kickass game, RPG elements, zombies, item crafting and survival. The game has some comedy in it as well, there were quite a few moments I laughed when the “survival books” were played out. The DLC adds quite a bit, a completely different island with a whole new vibe and story to it. Anyways, good game, would be better with a friend but can be enjoyed solo as well 3.5/5!
