Seems like the developer is too busy banning reasonable people off his forums and playing Quake Live to do anything to help the game. The developer's game is nothing anymore - consider him a regular Steam user, and treat him as you would a terrible person on the internet.

So this game has been one of my favorite building games of all time. Starting in 2010 along with the majority of what I would say was our community, I bought the original Blockland and was having a great time. Things were getting done, updates being made. There were these classics maps I'll never forget: the Bedroom, the Kitchen, and the Slopes. I enjoyed this game, and I was estimated to be playing it about 10 hours a day or more.

It took some time but an insightful man by the name of Ephialtes in-game decided to build Blockland a new system. I believe it was around 2011-2012 that this became widely-used. It was called Return to Blockland, and was basically the Steam client for Blockland before Blockland was actually on Steam. It had a 'Workshop' (servers that hosted add-ons you could directly download from), Add-On Manager, Friends client, global IRC chat, chat rooms, easy-to-use settings system for your server, add-on preferences manager, and so much more. It was the true revelation of Blockland's existence. It brought upon a new experience for the Blockland community, and gave it a modern feel.

Then this game went on Greenlight.

That officially marked the downfall of RTB, which would eventually be shut down because Steam replaced 1/3 of its functionality. There would no longer be a place to manage your add-ons, chat globally with other BL users, find your friends (since they would no longer be on RTB and you didn't know if they had Steam), and last but not least, you could no longer manage your server like you used to.

That probably drove me away the most. I stuck around for a bit, hosted a multitude of mildly popular servers as well as a 32/32 player MERP server that consisted of most of my time. After about four months, I kinda lost interest and began the process of leaving the BL community. I left a legacy, but even that would soon be forgotten...

So you know that game called Minecraft? I ended up spending almost all of my time on that. I hosted some very popular servers on Minecraft, met some great friends, and was enjoying it. I almost forgot about Blockland completely, but then my friend (who shall remain nameless) decided to get Blockland after I showed him a fun little gamemode on it called Renderman. He got it, and when I saw that he did, I decided to hop back on and play with him... but I didn't do much otherwise.

I truly came back about two months ago. I began hosting my MERP server, probably just to feel the nostalgia and see all the empires that had been built on it. A friend of mine by the name of Amir (a full-time player of my server back when it was popular) happened to stop by. We had an awesome reunion, played a bit of MERP (not really. Just remarked on how sucky our builds were), had a lot of fun. I began playing Blockland much more.

And then I stopped. Garry's Mod took up my time. I managed a community on there and couldn't depart from them. But that wasn't the only reason.

I lost interest.

So anyways, if you got to the bottom of this review reading through an incredibly long backstory and wondering why the heck I'd write a story like that, I congratulate you. You have the patience of a... you, but none of this was really a review, was it?

So here's my take on the game.

If you want to play a game with a low amount of active community supporters/respectful, mature players, don't get this game.

If you want to play a game where you build anything and can do anything (with the help of a bit of programming knowledge or the visually-based event system), get this game.

If you want to play a game where servers are always full and there is an easy way to liven up your game with user-created add-ons, don't get this game.

If you want to play a game where you can host a server of any kind, have some fun with Pirate Ship DM gamemodes, and basically shoot your friends with laser pistols and horse rays (yeah, they turn them into a horse), this game IS FOR YOU.

BUT. If you want a game that will keep you interested for years to come, always ready for that next update, always ready for that next big thing... don't get this game. It's unkempt, uncombed, and unfathomably stagnate.

But I might be wrong. What if YOU are the next big thing?

In my opinion, this game is NOT recommended due to the lack of interesting things that may be found in Blockland.
It's a great game, don't get me wrong, but it is running on steam (get it hahahahaaha... haha. ..ha... sorry) and no longer has that spark of a game that has true potential. Maybe Badspot can turn this around one day. And maybe you can be a part of that. Me, on the other hand, have exhausted the game of Blockland. I like the game, but I can no longer play it.

Maybe it'll be different for you.

Played since 2008, was a great game. (GAME FULL OF KIDS, LIKE SERIOUSLY.)

The loss of players and the lack of creators updates left it a partly-unfinished game leaving the community to mod their own gamemodes on their own. Yet ruining the game; Not a single update went out until last year, and yet as he says, he declares no more.

IF you buy this game, you wont get a whoop load of fantastic fun like you would back in 2009, the forum is nearly dead and the gamestyle is old, I promise it will be a bad experience and a waste of money; He's practically using it to leech his ten bucks every week. Making more SH**TY games, and he wont focus on one large project.

Return-To-Blockland began to stop using their free merchandise on blockland, because one of the lucky men keeping it alive was rewarded a promotion elsewere. Ruining the game even more it has less stinctive use and predictament to the game. Since then, thankful for all the modders and their helpful work. Knowingly now that it is a waste of work and it is loosing atleast a player a day.

This game was the bomb back then from the launch to a year before Steam Release. It started to decline when maps got removed. Then less and less content was released. And the final blow was when Badspot stopped development.

Personally, I would call Blockland a veteran that slowly caught Alhzimer's and forgot who it once was.

Would recommend if it was 6 years ago.

There was some interesting parts, but it didn't take long before i just got borred off it.
There aren't any futher development in this product, and the community also seem to be smaler and smaler.
Minecraft is a better investment than blockland.

A friend once asked me if this was another Minecraft knockoff. Here is my opinion on the matter.

This game is nothing like minecraft. You do not have to build a house to survive the onslaught of monsters in the night (unless it is part of a special play mode, it has several modes), you don't dig into the ground. This game is far more similar to ROBLOX, a free to play mmo where you build whatever you want for the sake of building it and playing minigames with friends. In the sense that it has blocks and you can build things tho, yes, it is similar to Minecraft, except just like in ROBLOX you will build these things from choices in a menu, you do not collect materials as in Minecraft. Minecraft is about survival, mining and crafting. On the other hand it is unlike any other game specifically, because yes there are a lot of games with blocks with which you can build things out there, but that does not make them all a cheap ripoff of one another. This game is about hanging out and letting your imagination run free!

I hope that clears it up a bit.

I have been playing Blockland for the better part of my life, as cheesy as that sounds. In my opinion, it is a great game. The creativeness is very contemplating. I would rate this game five stars. Five stars without the Community. The community is horrid. Over the past few years the community has becoming worse and worse. Almost everyone are a bunch of screaming, crying kids. They are disrespectful, dishonorable, and terrible. Just take a look at it for yourself. There are a bunch of egotistical brats who spend a lot more of their time beating down people on the forums then playing the actual game themselves. It is near impossible to find a server that is full of good people who will teach you how to play the game and be nice to you. Most people are discriminate and will banish you from your server on sight.

The game is great without the community, and I would rate it five stars in a heartbeat. But buying this game is quite testy since the major part of Blockland is it’s community. One bad apple can spoil the bunch, except the bunch are the bad apples. Looking behind the bad bunch are good people too. There are still a few people who are very creative, helpful, and kind. You may find a few friends too.

I have more information about the game as well as a few interesting sites on a review I did on my blog. View it here.

Blockland Review - Raymond K. Turcotte -

*Update*

( I origanaly said this was a "Minecraft Ripoff" This is a message to those who replied in a negative way)

I really find some people on Steam are takeing my Review the wrong way. So what if my opinion isn't the same as yours? I'm not going to become a Conformist just because everyone else thinks it's a master peice. Again. This game i'd recommend to 6 or 7 year old. Because it's like a Lego game. Actually when i put it that way. It's a Lego "Ripoff"

I keep my point stable, "I don't recommend this game"
